AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MR. MOHAMMED KHALAF AL HABTOOR As one of the most successful businessmen in the region, who has inspired / mentored you to achieve even more than you have recently?

What ignited the spark to venture into the developer business?

Excluding yours, which other company or business do you admire the most?

Two people inspire me, my father, Khalaf Al Habtoor, Chairman of Al Habtoor Group and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoumthe ruler of Dubai. These two iconic figures have been instrumental in my achievements to date. This in turn has manifested itself in our contribution towards economic development and growth.

Developing big projects is not new for the Al Habtoor Group. Since the inception of our group, we have developed, invested in and operated successful projects in real estate as well as hospitality fields. However, Al Habtoor City is an unmatched project in terms of size and variety it includes.Our vision was to build something iconic - a landmark, and through rigorous studies, we felt it was the right time to move into this development.

In the private sector, I admire Majid Al Futtaim. In the public sector, Emaar.

What’s the secret behind Al Habtoor group’s long term success? The secret of our success comes down to: Taking calculated risks and never gambling with business. Before we foray into any business ventures, our professional team conducts intense feasibility studies and risk assessments to minimize risks and to assess our return on investment. Our employees are our biggest assets and we have a strong team of senior managers that we rely, and consult with before making the final decisions. Last but not least is commitment to success. All the employees of the Al Habtoor Group are committed to the success of our Group, we have loyalty and respect of the teams.

Lifestyle developments seem to be the trend of this generation. Will we be expecting more lifestyle themed developments or are we expecting another trend a decade from now? Lifestyle developments are the futures trend. Time is one of the highest commodities and mixed used developments offer that luxury with easy access to different facilities within one place. At the Al Habtoor Group, we have 2 large scale projects that could be labelled 'lifestyle'. First of course is Al Habtoor City, and the second is the Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club which will include luxury villas, a St. Regis Polo Resort, equestrian and polo facilities.

Since Al Habtoor Group’s name has been synonymous with dynamic growth are we expecting additional services besides the ones that you currently provide? As Al Habtoor Group, we are confidently diversified and our efforts and experiences are used to continue to develop our current entities. At the moment we are not looking to diversify further. Do you aspire to compete internationally? I have competed several times in the past in France, Spain and England. As a keen player of polo, playing professionally for the Habtoor Polo Team, can you tell us what drew you to the sport? Firstly, I love horses and I have been a heavy rider since I was young! Polo is a team orientated sport, not only with your team players but the partnership between you and your horse to key performances. Which is your favourite horse and why?

While the Al Habtoor City is unmatched in style and components, the new Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club will be equally unique, we are expecting to receive guests end of 2016.

Paz! He is a medium sized horse, very handy, stable on a full gallop and is quick to respond. Unfortunately, Paz has been with me for a while and is now getting old, I believe he has only a maximum of two seasons left in him.

What are your expectations for Real Estate in Dubai with the lead up to Expo 2020?

What’s your competitive advantage?

Real Estate has been good in the past and following years, the key to real estate is the right location and the quality of build. As for 2020, the economic growth is bound to expand and in parallel real estate will have a positive impact.

A Brief History of Blockbuster Diamonds

Ahead of our Geneva sale of the largest cushion shaped Fancy Vivid Pink diamond at auction, we look at a selection of the most exceptional coloured diamonds ever sold at Christie’s


BLUE

The Blue: Fancy Vivid Blue pear-shaped diamond, weighing approximately 13.22 carats, flanked on either side by a pear-shaped diamond, weighing approximately 1.00 and 0.96 carat. Sold for CHF21,445,000 ($24,202,829) on 14 May 2014 at Christie’s in Geneva Weighing in at 13.22 carats, The Blue was sold as the largest Flawless Vivid blue diamond in the world — a status confirmed by a report from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), which described the stone as ‘the largest Flawless, Fancy Vivid Blue, Natural Color, diamond (…) graded at the date of this letter’ (25 March 2014). Set in a ring, the pear shaped stone came flanked by two pear-shaped white diamonds, weighing approximately 1.00 and 0.96 carats. Though smaller than The Blue, the stones were nonetheless remarkable, boasting the rare ‘D’ grade — the highest diamond grade indicating an ‘exceptional white’ tone. Purchased by Harry Winston in Geneva in 2014, the exceptional stone changed hands for a jaw-dropping $24,202,829.

FLAWLESS A spectacular and highly important diamond, the pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 101.73 carats. Sold for: CHF25,883,750 ($26,746,541) on 15 May 2013 at Christie’s in Geneva In 2013, Christie’s auctioned one of the world’s most perfect diamonds, and one of the largest pear-shaped diamonds known to date — weighing in at an extraordinary 101.73 carats. Awarded the highest ‘D’ colour grade by the Gemological Institute of America, the stone came with the coveted ‘Flawless’ clarity, and was bought for $26,746,541. Perfectly symmetrical, the finished diamond was produced from a rough diamond of 236 carats, sourced in Botswana, which took 21 months to polish. ‘Just as a great artist is able to ‘see’ a masterpiece in a block of marble, a perfect diamond is the result of the skill and vision of a master cutter who is able to uncover beauty from a rough gem,’ explained International Head of Jewellery Rahul Kadakia.


PINK MASTERPIECE The largest cushion-shaped Fancy vivid pink diamond at auction. Set with a cushion-shaped fancy vivid pink diamond, weighing approximately 16.08 carats, within a diamond twin surround, to the pink diamond gallery and diamond-set hoop, ring size 6, mounted in platinum and gold. Sold for: CHF28,725,000 ($28,687,003) Sold in Geneva on 10 November, this cushion-shaped Fancy Vivid Pink diamond is the largest of its kind ever to come to auction, weighing in at 16.08 carats. The stone is set in a ring, and is surrounded by a double row of pavé white diamonds, a third row of small pink diamonds nestled underneath. ‘As large and rare coloured diamonds of this calibre become increasingly hard to locate, this 16.08 carat Fancy Vivid Pink diamond comes to market at a time when great gems are mirroring prices achieved for masterpieces in the world of fine art,’ comments Kadakia. Awarded to just one in one hundred thousand diamonds, the ‘Fancy Vivid’ status is exceptionally rare, reflecting the depth of the diamond’s straight pink hue.

THE ORANGE

The Orange: The largest Fancy Vivid Orange diamond in the world. The Fancy Vivid Orange pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 14.82 carats. Sold for: CHF32,645,000 ($35,543,804) on 12 November 2013 at Christie’s in Geneva

When it was auctioned in 2013, The Orange was the largest Fancy Vivid Orange diamond ever to have been discovered, weighing approximately 14.82 carats. The GIA commented: ‘In the laboratory’s experience, strongly coloured diamonds in the orange hue range rarely exceed three of four carats in size when polished. This diamond is almost four times larger’. Termed ‘fire diamonds’ by famous gemologist Edwin Streeter, pure orange diamonds remain incredibly rare, with so few having been graded that the exact cause of their colour remains a mystery. The diamond’s unique nature was reflected in its price, selling for $35,543,804 — more than $15 million above its high estimate.


THE YELLOW A magnificent colored diamond ring. Set with a cushion modified brilliant-cut Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond, weighing approximately 75.56 carats, ring size 6, mounted in 18k gold. Sold for: $3,609,000 This exceptional gem possesses a soft cushion-shaped silhouette with modified cutting style, and is a sensational example of a Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond. Simply set as a ring within a streamlined yellow gold setting, the Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond requires no further ornamentation, as it alone draws the eye with its brilliance. To find a stone of approximately 75.56 carats graded a Fancy Vivid Yellow by the GIA is a rare occurrence in today’s marketplace.

THE PERFECT PINK

The Perfect Pink. A superb coloured diamond and diamond ring. Set with a rectangular-shaped fancy intense pink diamond weighing 14.23 carats, flanked on either side by a rectangular-shaped diamond weighing 1.73 and 1.67 carats, mounted in 18k rose and white gold. Sold for: HK$179,860,000 ($23,274,064) on 29 November 2010 at Christie’s in Hong Kong Since they were first discovered in the ancient mines of India, pink diamonds have been considered amongst most beautiful gemstones, and are coveted by connoisseurs. At 14.23 carats, The Perfect Pink is particularly rare, with polished pink diamonds of its size and colour virtually unheard of — fewer than 10 per cent of all pink diamonds weigh more than 0.20 carats.

JEFFAR KHALDI Pseudo-fantasy world- a combination of the past and the present is what describes most of Jeffar Khaldi’s artwork.Striking as it is, his own experiences became his most powerful tool in expressing art. Although he claims not to be a political artist, his pieces would usually include a trace of ethnicity combined with modern influences.


What was your inspiration when you created the artwork, how was the concept born? The initial concept for @ Dusty’s was provided by the restaurant’s interior designer. After consideration and toying with a few ideas the idea evolved and actually changed direction into my own concept. The design appears to incorporate a few tricky styles. Can you elaborate on the methods, medium and your material selection? This is the first collage artwork that I’ve done so far. Figuring out the proportions and the colors to be used as well as bonding everything and preserving it all at the same time was the biggest challenge.I had to use a waterproof mesh used for construction and a solution to keep everything together. I started collecting magazines from all over the city but that didn’t work out and it was a process of trial and error to get it right.I wanted the piece to be something more than just a collage, so I proceeded to search online for images and considering anything I could find - anything that could be used;from abstract articles, to news from all over the world.

Everything was printed and cut to detail to achieve the dimension I wanted. It was a lot of work but I was ecstatic to see the results. What ignited your passion for murals? Well it was born out boredom, I wanted to do something more challenging than just oil and canvas and it’s my bread butter. The artworks in the address and @ Dusty’s are few of my favorites. I had the freedom to do my own thing it really matters to us artists. Is the artwork fully planned or is there an element of evolving the end product in situ? How do you know it is in-line with your vision for the piece? I’m an artist, so mostly it’s evolving. I jump from one idea to another until I get the concept that I want. On average, how long does it take you to complete a piece from concept & mock-ups to end product? I’m very efficient and I like working with efficiency. I even prepare my meals in 5 minutes or less, so with artworks if I have the idea and concept ready I can have it done within 10 days to 2 weeks max. Any dream project? What does an established artist such as yourself look forward to achieving, such as artwork for a preferred celebrity’s house, period house or monument? I have this dream project which started 10 years ago when I was in Spain. I got really inspired by it, so much so, that I wanted to do something here in Dubai. Dubai gave me so much so I wanted to give back with this project. It involves public structures around UAE. I am still in the process of finding the right people to reach out to. Hoping to call this project- Legacy or City Scapes.
