One night I was woken up by a terrible sound. It was a deep, low rumble that didn’t want to stop, like a motorbike engine at full speed, but this noise was louder. I looked out of my drawn curtains and through the window and saw forks of lightning ploughing through the maze of forest trees. Everything was loud but suspiciously silent.
All was quiet the next morning. Dad wasn’t there. Mum seemed upset; it was as if she was keeping something from me. “Mum what’s happened?” I asked her, she explained to me that if something had happened then she would have told me but I didn’t know if I could trust her anymore. “Where’s Dad?” I questioned her. “What’s this an interview?” She laughed. Something was wrong. “Will he be back soon?” I enquired. She didn’t know, she got up and walked away. Confused, I glared at the empty chairs wondering what had happened with Dad that night…
Tired, upset and filled with confusion, I grumpily trudged down the stairs after what seemed like a normal night where I get no sleep and think about Dad, weeping into my pillow. The beautiful smell had put me off last night; Mum had been baking. ”Hello honey, how was your night?” She asked as I walked into the kitchen, “It was fine.” I lied, I figured that if she can lie to me about Dad then I can lie to her about other things. “Could you take this cake to Grandma?” It was one of those questions where I didn’t have a choice and I just had to do it, “Grandma is ill!”
Swiftly I walked through the forest trying to get to Grandma’s house and back as fast as I could. There was an eerie atmosphere in the woods but even through the creepy feelings it felt like a normal walk, my feelings and emotions didn’t seem to coincide with the atmosphere. “Would you like a milky-moo-cow?” I heard a deep manly voice say from behind my back, “I’ll swap it for that sweet-fruity cake!” He offered ‘How does he know I have a cake?’ I thought to myself, I turned his offer down (Grandma wanted a cake not a cow). I turned around expecting to see a middle-aged man but instead I saw a boy about the same age as me with a huge cow. ‘How has he got there?’ I questioned myself, 'Has he been following me the whole time? A shiver fell down my spine as I ran away confused. “I’m poorly, I’m poorly…”
I carried on scurrying away until I ran out of breath. I decided to sit down and rest at the foot of a tree to get my energy back. As a breeze swept through the forest, the scent of the cake drifted up to and met my nose. I looked down at it, it looked so nice, it made me realise how hungry I was. I reached out to it to grab a small chunk of it to eat, I could explain why some was missing later to Grandma, she would probably give me another piece because I’m her favourite Grandson, her one and only Grandson. Strangely, I felt something but it wasn’t sponge, icing or fruit; it felt more like flesh. I heard a screech from behind the tree.
She stepped forward out of the shadow. I could see a beautiful young girl weeping into the sleeve of her cardigan, she had the most luscious golden hair. I decided to get away from her as hastily as I could before she did something back to me to upset me. “I would love a cake like that! Please may I have it? Please may I have it…”
As I got closer to Grandma’s house everything became darker and colder. I saw two little children, one older than the other, huddling together like penguins in front of their dimly burning fire. “Have you seen our parents?” The older child questioned me, “No I don’t think so, why? Are you lost?” I responded, “If I see them I will tell you.” I promised them, “We aren’t lost we are waiting for them to come back from cutting wood but my little sister is upset so we need them quickly!” I walked on keeping an eye out for their much needed parents, I could hear the young girl crying far back in the distance…
It had suddenly started snowing deeper into the forest, it was as if everything had seemed cold since Dad had gone, the air was similar to my heart, frozen, broken‌
I wished I could go back home and get my coat, then suddenly one appeared to the right of me, it was like the books Grandma used to read to me about magic spells and wolves. I became suddenly scared because cold, dark forests were where big, bad wolves lurked. I put the coat on and ran away...
After some more running I came to a clearing with a blanket of snow scattered over it– I was finally there. Grandma’s house seemed to have an invisible shield around it from all of the cold weather and when I walked within a metre of it everything suddenly became weirdly warm
“Hello Grandma it’s me, your Grandson!” I shouted knocking at the door, “Grandma open thee door!” I heard a loud crash and the door opened a crack, “Grandma?” I opened the door fully and saw everyone that I talked to in the woods, the boy with his cow, the golden haired girl and the two children with their parents. Everything stopped, I couldn’t hear anything…
I woke up in the middle of nowhere, nothing was could be seen except a white carpet of frost within about a square mile around me, snow was falling down gracefully around me...
