I NT E G R AT E D U R B A N D E S I G N P R O J E CT THIRD YEAR UNDERGRADUATE 2018 Friargate station and goods yard is located in Derby , and has been abandoned since the stations closure in 1964. The regeneration project is in collaboration with The University of Derby, and the former warehouse will become a Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation and nutrition centre. I decided to simply name my final project ‘Restoration’ , which refers to both the principle of restoring the landscape layers of history, in harmony with the act of restoring ones state of health & well being. My proposal aimed to create a high quality campus environment with a core focus on health, both through mental restoration and physical stimulation. The site features an existing semi-mature woodland and swathes of unimproved grassland which is home to rare butterflies. One of my main ambitions from day one was to identify the sites existing distinctive qualities and ‘tread lightly’ in these areas for minimal ecological disturbance. Furthermore, the new design challenges the conventional perception of a student campus. The design focuses on the reality that students are not present for a over third of the year, thus integrating the surrounding community, by providing multi-functional spaces for all year round events.
A series of conceptual models showing material exploration within the chosen detailed design area.

-Involve the FoFG group in the creation of the new Betula woodland, as each person will have a vested interest in the survival of ‘their trees’ and are likely to protect them. -Plant all new tree species during Autumn. Thinning of existing dominating Common Ivy in woodland.
-Involvement of the nearby Cathedral school to use the landscape as an educational outdoor learning tool. - Perennial plantings should have simple signage showing the botanical name, sunlight & soil conditions, and environmental benefits to inform & educate site users.

-Surplus vegetation will be left to decompose on site (cuttings, leaf litter ect) to minimise the output of site wastage. -A non-herbicidal weeding strategy will be encouraged for sustainable site management. -Over time,on-site plant division & propagation will mean there is no need to source surplus perennials from nurseries.
At the entrance, a small galvanised steel viewing platform will give users the first glimpse of the post-industrial character, which is prevalent throughout the site.
A small grove of coniferous trees provides a sense of seclusion and mystery, on arrival. Dwarf native species such as Scots Pine, Juniper and Yew will create a contrast against the spontaneity of the existing mature woodland.
Groves of Betula pendula reflect the existing site species, creating design coherency. The light, smooth tones of the concrete seat bases are reflected against the stark white bark.

Through the former platforms and train lines
The rest of the existing woodland will remain untouched, allowing the entire focus on the entrance threshold. Existing Sycamore saplings that have naturally regenerated on the former rail lines will be retained.
The woodland is made accessible to the public through a stainless steel grate walkway floating 40cm off the ground. This is part of my vision to ‘tread lightly’ on the existing landscape. The semi-transparent qualities of the grate allow users to immerse themselves in the landscape layers, without causing distribution.

3 A single row of rusted rebar steel will represent the welded rail used in the former rail lines. This will lay flat, indented into the main pathway, as a subtle hint towards the site’s history. 4 A raised galvanised steel grate walkway contrasts against the naturalistic fluidity of the ferns and sedges below. Bold and robust, it is only used in small sections, because of the high cost.
Light A transition of high - low shadow intensity creates a contrast of dense shade, to an open & light landscape. The existing Ash, Birch and Sycamore woodland will blur into the proposed trees. The new planting of the native Silver and Downy Birch will reflect the existing site species in order to look like a natural dispersal, as common in post-industrial sites.
C O N ST R U CT I O N D E T A I L E D D E S I G N THIRD YEAR UNDERGRADUATE 2018 For the construction design I had to produce an illustrative measured section through part of my detailed design area showing an important surface and structure. Together, the surface and structure had to constitute a distinctive space within my project with character that particularly reflects my design objectives in terms of materials and methods of construction. It was important to reflect the existing post-industrial character through a robust and bold material palette. Reclaimed on site materials acted as the landscape palette, such as crushed red brick from excavation works featuring along path edges.

A series of material experiments produced in the workshop informed the detailing of a key surface and structure. I wanted to explore different concrete finishes and the experience this could offer the user. It helped me to formulate my seating design - the contrast Cons between an exposed aggregate sandblasted Chri base with a smooth polished top.

P L A NT I N G D E T A I L E D D E S I G N THIRD YEAR UNDERGRADUATE 2018 For the planting submission I chose to work with the same detailed design area for the main project, in order to keep consistent and design one area in detail and depth. My vision was to create a landscape which respects the existing naturally regenerative flora, yet also introduce new diverse species to create a multitude of experiences. I was asked to produce an annotated cross section through the chosen area. It had to be clearly labelled with a short statement to describe the character of each planting type. The planting had to be specified in detail e.g. size at purchase, and ground layer mixes based on % and density per m2.
Betula pubescens
Purchase standard size at 8/10 girth, 2.5/3m overall height (Clear single stem 175-200cm) Bare root at purchase. Plant in an irregular pattern with a density of 2m².
Carpinus betulus
Planted at a distance of 4m width x 6m length (grid formation). Size at purchase 14-16cm girth, 4/4.5 overall height. Clear stem 200cm. Container grown for instant impact.. Extra heavy standard. Boxhead at purchase. Carpinus betulus layout 6m 4m
Prunus serrula ‘Tibetica’
8/10 girth, 2.5/3m overall height Bare root. Standard form. Planted in an avenue at a distance of 3m. Clear, single stem.175-200cm.
Betula pendula
Purchase standard size at 8/10 girth, 2.5/3m overall height (Clear single stem 175-200cm) and feathered tree at 1.75/2m height trees. (stem untrimmed) Bare root at purchase. Plant in an irregular pattern with a density of 4m².
Ornamental grass drift
Dry European perrenial mix
Pennisetum alopecuroides (4m²) Calamagrostis brachytricha.(9m²) Both purchased at 2L pot size for immediate interest. Planted in long linear drifts.
Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea ‘Transparent’ 5m² (2L pot size) Sanguisorba officinalis ‘Tanna’ 6m² (9cm), Cephalaria gigantean 3m² (2L), Deschampsia cespitosa Goldschleier’ 6m²(2L), Phlomis russeliana 8m² (9cm), Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea ‘Moorhexe’5m² (2L)
I L L U ST R AT IV E S E CT I O N
Bulb layer A simple grove of Betula pendula will be planted at different purchase sizes in order to appear as natural as possible. This will also give users a glimpse of the mature woodland beyond. The species was chosen because it is one of only 2 native Betula, and it already thrives elsewhere in the site, so this creates coherency.
