URBAN GREEN - BACK TO THE FUTURE - A PEOPLE’S PARK Design Concept Heavily layered with industrial history and stories of lost communities, the former Brewery site is transformed into an urban green space. The concept is developed from mill wheels and industrial shapes and patterns. The wheel draws people into the park and spins out again connecting with destinations around the City.

This sketchup model gives a 3d and practical view of the new Park. These were used to explore the site and helped inform decision making on positioning elements within the Park and how it would be used. CAD baseplan, sketchup and photoshop rendering.
The section created using CAD, sketchup and rendered in photoshop, shows the view from the amphitheatre across the park buildings to the apartments and offices outside the park. An impression of how the site would look and views in and out.

DESIGN AND COMMUNITY - REFLECTION GARDEN - ST GEMMA’S LEEDS
Client consultation Client consultation was an essential part of this project in order to gain an understanding of St Gemma’s requirements and the design requirements. A rectangular part of their grounds, unused and unloved was to be transformed into a garden for recently bereaved to visit. The Hospice relies heavily on fund-raising and this was to be integrated into the design for a new reflection garden. This group project culminated in a combined design with elements of each member’s work. The designs shown are the author’s own done as part of that project.

BACK TO FRONT PROJECT
Research carried out into companion planting helped inform the designs chosen and plants used in the designs.
A group compilation of designs entitled Grow Your Own Garden published in 2012. See over for contributions in the book by Christina Fox. PAGE 14
The space was explored by model work in sketchup from initial base plans drawn in CAD. This helped visualise changes in level and placement of elements. Designs were hand rendered over CAD base plans.
BACK TO FRONT PROJECT This project was influenced by a similar live project designed to encourage people, irrespective of garden size, to grow fruit and vegetables in their front gardens. Hence the back to front title. These particular designs are suitable for a typical smaller front garden area of a 1960s semi-detached house. A selection of gardens designed to maximise food production whilst creating a visually attractive garden.
FIELD STUDY - 2013
Bordeaux - France Pen, marker and pencil sketches undertaken during a field study to Bordeaux, France. Lively sketches capture the character of Bordeaux, its architecture, linearplanting alongside le Garonne and some of the thriving community projects on the outskirts of Bordeaux.
PAGE 16
Bordeaux - France Extracts from a notebook of sketches of details of the many pocket parks and squares or Places hidden away behind tall buildings. Ironwork, balconies, beckoning cafes, impressive arches, hanging copper lights, carved stonework, fountains and imaginative planting schemes captured in pencil, oil pastel, pen and marker.

Ilkley - Yorkshire
Ilkley Moor is part of Rombalds Moor and is designated as a national Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the internationally rare type of vegetation on the moorland and the use of the moor for nesting upland waders. Across the moor there are a number of Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAMs) such as carved stones and evidence of bronze age settlements. The moor has been shaped over centuries by human intervention which has caused dramatic changes to soil and vegetative cover.
A local character assessment was carried out during 2011. These pen and marker sketches capture the essence of Ilkley from the moor down to the river. No wonder it has inspired poets, composers and writers for many years. PAGE 18
Malham - Yorkshire Dales
field studY 2012
Yorkshire Dales Character Area 21. A study visit to capture the character of this stunning landscape. Pen, wash and pastels capture the windswept hillsides and the limestone amphitheatre at Malham Cove. Malham Tarn is the start of the river Aire which flows as Malham Beck through the village of Malham. Heavily visited by walkers and climbers. A mixture of millstone grit and limestone is used in the buildings and walls. Networks of walled fields with limited tree cover on steep gradients are dotted with sheep.
A gated entrance to the walk down towards Malham Cove with warnings from local farmers to keep to the restricted pathways. Many of the stone cottages are empty and dilapidated.
3d exploration
Hand crafted model explored through photography and rendered in photoshop. The original model was clay, card, wood and foil. The foil created a good dappled tree canopy affect. Part of a project to bring the influence of the natural woodland into the City.
PAGE 20
3 D exploration
The model aided design exploration. The design was inspired by the winding roots found in Scotland Woods, Leeds and planting pockets created within, as well as how leaves gather in those areas and how trees cling to the banks of a stream running through.

GARDEN DESIGN - REAR GARDEN RETREAT - BRADFORD 2012 The design brief here was to remove an unsafe, unusable dangerously high deck, create storage space and a safe play environment for small children whilst still being able to maintain the raised terrace to the rear. Challenge was to remove decking without the whole of the rear wall collapsing. Built by M A Fox, M Thirsk, J Sharp, planting by C A Fox. Design examples, sketchup and hand drawn, pen rendered.

GARDEN DESIGN - FROM RECLAMATION YARD TO RELAXATION - BINGLEY 2011
The design brief was to turn this reclamation yard into a beautiful low maintenance garden for a busy professional couple. Recycling and rearranging the garden whilst integrating existing elements was essential. Design built by M Thirsk, M Fox, M Fox jnr, J Sharp, D Chambers, C A Fox Design examples, CAD rendered in Photoshop, 3d sketch using Sketchup overlay.

GARDEN DESIGN - VICTORIAN POTAGER - BRADFORD 2011 The design brief was to create a productive garden suitable to the Victorian style of terrace for a retiring head teacher. Detailing from the stained glass window design was used for the layout. The garden needed to be low maintenance. The old tarmac pathway was taken out. The challenge here was working in a confined space on a main road and the weight of some of the stonework to be repaired! Design built by M Fox, M Fox Jnr and C A Fox. Plant advice C A Fox. Design images, hand rendered sketch in pen and marker and sketch up model.
