3 INTRODUCTION 1.1 PROLOGUE

With great pleasure, I would like to express my gratitude to SWLee Architect for accepting me to carry out my internship in their company. I would like to specially thank Ar.Lee Siew Wai for giving me this opportunity to learn and to practice under his supervision. Also, I want to thank all the staffs of SWLee Architect as they had helped me along the way in various expect. I also want to express my gratitude to my lecturer - Mr.Rizal for his tutoring and assessment of this short semester. Thank you very much as I would not have complete this without any of those mentioned above.

1.2 INTERNSHIP TRAINING AND REPORT

This short semester - Internship training and report, prepares and equip us with all the necessary knowledge and skills required for the working industry. It provides us a platform where we are exposed to various aspect in relation to the construction industry by being involved in real life projects which requires certain regulations and procedures. On the other hand, we are able to further equip ourselves with more experience for our remaining semesters which will set a clearer guideline of proper drawings techniques and stronger designs.

Through a simple guard house, I was able to learn the proper way to present a submission drawing and to what extend of details are required to be included. In addition, I was able to learn the proper way of plotting and arranging drawings to be printed. I was able to familiarise myself with some common specifications such as materials and thickness used for each components.

Figure 17 : Submission of drawings to client - First payment made Through this project, I learnt how to deal with the requirements of the client and make appropriate advice in ensuring everything is correct. I was also able to study the turning radius of a truck as well as other specifications like diverge of drainage system, rules and regulations about set backs as well as proposing suitable fencing and gate for a factory.

In designing the sports complex, I was able to study the nature of the site itself and understand the potential of the land which influences the placement, form, material and orientation of the building. In this project, I was required to produce a conceptual design along with visual presentation to be shown to the school councils for approval. Requirements of spaces are : Gymnasium, 2 Squash Court, 5 Table tennis court, half-olympic swimming pool and a Library. With the guidance of my supervisor, Ar.Lee Siew Wai, I was able to learn the proper way to design a building.

However, with the help of my supervisor, I was able to figure out the arrangement of spaces in maximising the land to ensure each area has contributed to its full usage.Â

The first floor plan is an optional design which was proposed by one of the school council. The possibility of constructing the first floor will depend on the overall construction cost in relation to the budget. The school has allocated a budget of 3 million for the entire sports complex. However, it is estimated that the budget is not suďŹƒcient as the estimated construction cost of the building is 2.59 million Ringgit excluding the construction cost of the half-olympic size swimming pool.

I was required to help my colleagues in rushing for the submission drawings of a hotel located at Seremban 2. I was assigned to contribute in arranging the layouts, amending some minor changes from the clients, area tabulation and final checking of the specifications and annotations. Although the contribution is little , I was able to study all the drawing of the S2 hotel and gain the knowledge in terms of design, materiality, hierarchy in room areas and specifications.

Even though I was not fully in charge of this project, I was given a chance to participate the final meeting of the construction team which includes the architect, client, engineer, contractor, interior designer and the land authority. It was really an eye opener as I witness and observe the whole meeting. I learnt new terms that are commonly used in the construction industry. In addition, they were discussing about the procedures of submitting the drawings which contributes to the learning of local authorities. On the other hand, they were also discussing about the placement of TNB where it should be an attached unit or stand alone unit where they provide suggestions and statements among themselves.

I was required to produce both exterior and interior renderings to be shown to the school councils.. The requirement of the renderings are not just merely about aesthetics, but the information conveyed through the rendering itself. Through this practice, I was able to increase my skills in using the software 3DxMax as well as gaining more knowledge on the effect of materiality towards the facade and ambience of the whole building.

53 CONCLUSION

In conclusion, this short semester - Internship Training and Report has equipped me in various aspect where I have gained knowledge on the requirements, rules and regulations as well as building specifications of a real working project. On the other hand, I am able to experience the lifestyle of an working architect which varies from our studies at Taylor’s University.

Throughout this whole internship, I have been exposed to projects from different categories , small scale to big scale : Guard house, Renovation project, Sport’s Complex, Housing Development and Luxurious Bungalow. I was able to increase my technical skill and working speed which will definitely help in my further semesters.

Aside from technical knowledge and skills, I was able to gain the experience of working with my colleagues. Communication is the key to everything. I was able to work alongside with them and learn from them in all ways. I was able to learn many common standard requirements in designing a building for example : Headroom height, requirements from the Bomba, set backs from each side of the boundary line and many more.

On top of all mentioned above, I was able to gain the experience of working under a superior where all requirements are to be fulfilled and complete in a certain time with a expected quality of work. Hence, I have practiced to produce the best work that I could in the provided amount of time which trains my thinking skills and decision making. “ Less thinking , more doing”.

In a nutshell, I am very grateful that I was given a chance to be exposed to all kinds of projects. I have gained more than I expected through this short semester where all the knowledge and skills learnt will be very useful and beneficial in the future of my architecture journey.
