fiber, force_FORM proto-architectural spaces by fossilization of force and form The spaces of the final proto-architectural spatial morphology are created by the juxtaposition of modules constructed of aramid and glass fibers laid on flexible carbon fiber tube frames. The banding of the three internal trefoils engage the topography and ramp up to upper levels while carving away a primary bifurcated circulation corridor and several secondary paths into the landscape. Two enclosing pitchers stem from the bifurcation of each of two trefoils and merge at their apexes to shelter the interior forms and delineate internal and external spaces. The resulting proto-architecture provides a rich spatial experience through the forces in action.

elastic deformation of fibrous structures
Nearly all load-bearing systems in nature are composed of fibrous systems. The natural world has evolved to maximize on the properties of fibers, which are strong only in tension, to create systems finely tuned to manage compressive loads efficiently. The incapacity of a single fiber to bear compression is overcome by four key strategies: redundantly bundling fibers into hierarchical systems, orienting fibers PLAN to ensure that - FIXED TENSION PLAN - DOUBLE SIDED TENSION compressive loads are not directed axially along them, embedding fibers in matrixes better suited to bearing compression, and pre-stressing the fibers in tension. Scaffolds were interrogated and edited to create anticlastic fibrous surfaces characterized by a voluptuousness of deep surfaces, enclosing varied hierarchies of spaces while refraining from wrapping the fibers into a hermetically bound object. Through the elastic scaffold, fiber and formwork were enabled to inform each other in a homeostatic equilibrium that fossilized both the tensile forces of the fibers and the resisting force exerted by the framework into a resolved form. Simulating the limits of our infrastructure
[ time + delay ]
When tracking cause of failure or allocating a point of restoration, the investigation digs deeper than following the systematic hierarchy of individual systems. Infrastructure operates across borders and are interdependent, and not dependent, on other systems’ functionality. These infrastructures cannot be organized in a linear hierarchy, but instead a cyclical loop, in which the behaviors are understood as a chain of actions. Analysis through simulation of vulnerabilities helped explore the interdepencies of traffic. In particular, road network infrastructure has been a vulnerable target for disaster challenges. This analysis is conducted by drawing points of destination --hospitals, clinics, care centers--which then shape the topology of the hidden metric space by intersecting circles that represent the range of proximity between destination and source. The metric space measures the range of risks to the region, while the roads provided a graphical distance between destinations. By drawing comparison between the metric and graphic space of vulnerabilities, the disjuncture between the traffic network’s proximity to destination and physical organization and road network on site can be seen as a cause for failure.

road + railway +
The analysis of measuring risks in Proximity by road network and Magnitude to Reaching Medical Help for All is a scenario that seeks for disparity between road grids and medical center point network. For instance, lets say that there is a treacherous disaster that requires for everyone to seek for medical attention at once. You can imagine the traffic congestion on the road network to be an instant path to increased risks and depreciated safety. In a comparative study between Sandy and Great Bola Cyclone in 1970, most accidents, causalities and deaths occurred during in transit. For Sandy, most deaths happened inside an automobile. Similarly, in the Bay of Bengal, where the Great Bola Cyclone caused more than 300,000 deaths, people died during their transit to find shelter, safety, or medical attention. By understanding the higher risks involved from transit, this analysis creates a hypothetical scene to quantify who and what geographic regions are at risk when it comes to finding medical safety. People who are traveling beyond the four-mile radius is cross more at-risk road intersections due to the increased number or others with the same destination point.

RAILWAYS + BUS ROUTES - DAILY
Simulating the limits of our infrastructure
The method of finding the disparity between the public transit network and the network of daily interest are measured by overlaying the metric and graphic networks. The metric network is defined by the topology of interests points, in this case is defined by learning resource centers--universities, schools, libraries, research labs, and afterschool educational programs. The graphic space is the public transit network -- railways and bus routes. The risk of accidents that can occur during your daily transit routine exponentially increase as you live further away from your destination. As a first case, the story of interdependent network can be seen through the lens of a decision making process of an individuals before Hurricane Sandy. Paired with the day’s course of the Hurricane Sandy timeline of events on October 28, 2012, the anatomy constructs a storyline of how, where, and when one would evacuate in preparation for a hurricane disaster. Factors such as losing power, food and water supply, communication connections are majordeciding factors for evacuation. The flood zone region classification, the amount of resource they will lose from the the hurricane, where and when they will evacuate are only a few factors to consider. Whether they are traveling alone or with family/children or elderly is secondary factor.

I find this transformation fascinating and I am curious to see and predict how this zone will continue to evolve in the future. First, the ecological evolution has influenced the physical environment-preserving it as an open landscape, rather than an urban zone. Secondly, the impact on the local residents, workers, industry, economy has shaped the current culture to be more progressive towards sustainable living.

pocket port
future jetports for urban cities brooklyn, ny Manhatten and its neighboring bouroughs have multiple means of transportation--there are three airports and numerous heliports in the greater NYC area. However, most residents must travel an extra 10 miles on average to travel to the airport from the city. The city is not directly connected to these airports and creating an easily accessible and efficient airport can be benecial for more frequent air travel in the future.

VIP LOUNGE
The design challenge was creating a 155,000 sqft jetport in the existing site of the Brooklyn Navy Yards for a hypothetical client, Richard Branson, who is seeking a new building for his new business venture Virgin SolAir, a commercial airline for sports aircraft.

Novartis Building 3 [ italian pizzeria ] east hanover, new jersey Rafael Vinoly Architects
Novarti s Oncology Consolidation Center Building Three is a 310,000 sf new office building for a master plan development of Novarti s’ campus in East Hanover, New Jersey. The building is expected for completion in 2012 and it will house 800 open workstati ons, 120 seat restaurant, fitness center, and conference rooms. I joined the Rafael Vinoly Architects during the Construction Administration phase, and I was part of the cafe’s redesign and construction phase. The restaurant is an italian pizzeria that is served as a ‘grab n’ go’ style. The features of the cafe is a curved veneti an plaster wall that defi ne the served spaces and a suspended curved wooden ceiling that shape the interior seating space of the restaurant. The project challenges include designing around the unusual features of the geometries involved with the double curvature of the ceiling and coordinati ng with the structural, acousti cal, and mechancial to manufacture and install the wooden ceiling.
