Myths & Realities of a Reverse Mortgage As with many financial products, reverse mortgage loans can be complicated and there may be a number of misconceptions about how the product works. Do you know the myths vs. the realities?

Myth No. 1: The lender owns the home. You will retain the title and ownership during the life of the loan, and you can sell your home at any time. The loan will not become due as long as you continue to meet loan obligations such as living in the home, maintaining the home according to the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) requirements, and paying property taxes and homeowners insurance.

Myth No. 2: The home must be free and clear of any existing mortgages. Actually, many borrowers use the reverse mortgage loan to pay off an existing mortgage and eliminate monthly mortgage payments1.

Myth No. 3: Once loan proceeds are received, you pay taxes on them. Reverse mortgage loan proceeds are tax-free as it is not considered income. However, it is recommended that you consult your financial advisor and appropriate government agencies for any effect on taxes or government benefits.

Myth No. 4: The borrower is restricted on how to use the loan proceeds. Once any existing mortgage or lien has been paid off, the net loan proceeds from your HECM loan can be used for any reason. Many borrowers use it to supplement their retirement income, defer receiving Social Security benefits, pay off debt, pay for medical expenses, remodel their home, or help their adult children. You worked hard for this asset and prudence, along with budgeting, should be the proper approach to enjoying proceeds received from your HECM loan.

Myth No. 5: Only poor people need reverse mortgages. The perception of the reverse mortgage as an assist for the “poor” borrower is changing - many affluent senior borrowers with multi-million dollar homes and healthy retirement assets are using reverse mortgage loans as part of their financial and estate planning, and are working closely in conjunction with financial professionals and estate attorneys to enhance the overall quality and enjoyment of life.

1 You must live in the home as your primary residence, continue to pay required property taxes, homeowners insurance and maintain the home according to Federal Housing Administration requirements.

Simple Tips to Keep Clutter at Bay

(Family Feature) If yours is like the average American household, you have amassed a collection of unorganized stuff, tucked away in piles or behind closed doors to deal with “later.” Establishing good organization habits and creating proper storage areas can transform that chaos now and set the stage for less mess in the future. Following are some simple tips to help make your apartment or home clutter free, and get you started with some new habits to keep disorganization at bay. 1. Don’t buy things you don’t need. Living clutter free gives you a better perspective of what you have, so you don’t make unnecessary purchases, which can be costly and only add to the clutter in your home. Be wary of accumulating “aspirational clutter” — things you plan to use someday, but never quite get around to using. Though tempting, also avoid freebies and gifts with purchase that you don’t really need. Remember, clutter creates more clutter.

In the bedroom closet, use vertical space to create additional storage with organizing units. Wood organizers such as Closet Maid Impressions™ offer an attractive way to de-clutter with kits and add-on pieces that let you create a customized storage system for your personal needs. A second shoe rack in the closet helps organize shoes you wear less often. In the living room, create specific storage spaces for remotes, blankets, gaming equipment and other items using storage bins and containers that complement your décor. 3. Reset yourself. Every night before you turn in, take a few moments to put things where they belong. This gives you a fresh, stress-free start in the morning and peace of mind knowing where everything you need is located. 4. Turn clutter into cash. Motivate yourself to de-clutter by making money on your unused and unwanted possessions. You can sell gently used clothing to local consignment shops, or donate to Goodwill, Salvation Army or another nonprofit organization. Remember to get a donation receipt, because you may be able to take a tax deduction. For additional organizing tips, visit www.ClosetMaid.com www.StorganizationBlog.com or call 1-800-874-0008.

2. Create zones. In other words, make a space for everything. Your entryway can become a repository, so sort mail immediately (recycle what you don’t need), hang coats rather than draping them on available furniture and use a shoe bin or tray to organize pairs you wear frequently. (Family Feature) Most parents have learned things about money they wish they had known at a younger age. But when it comes to broaching the topic with their own teenagers, about a third would rather talk to them about smoking, drugs and bullying than money.1

Parents can take the angst out of teaching money management by working it into everyday routines. “Your kids are most likely interested in money and having more of it, but they may not know where to start,” says Susan Ehrlich, president of financial services for H&R Block. “Teaching money skills before they graduate will help them make smart choices and learn from their financial missteps now, so they’re better prepared when they’re on their own.” H&R Block provides free financial education for teens through H&R Block Dollars & Sense, which offers these tips: Encourage learning by earning. You may or may not want your teen to hold down a job while in

high school, but you can instill the concept of earning by encouraging occasional paying projects, such as babysitting or mowing lawns. Practice makes perfect. Ask your teen to manage a portion of the family budget, such as writing the weekly menu and grocery list to fit your budget or keeping track of eating-out expenses every month. Save now, spend later. Open a savings account for your teen to plan for future purchases. If you’re able, offer to match a portion of their savings to encourage the behavior. This can help convey the difference between needs and wants. Verbalize your own wants for something the entire family can save for and enjoy together, then share your progress toward the goal. Set some limits. If your teen has a credit card, set a realistic credit limit so the balance can be paid in full each month. Your teen will also see the impact of interest rates and annual fees.

FabulousOver50.com

Be a good financial role model. Pay your own bills on time and ask your teen to be part of the process. Talk to your teen about the importance of a good credit score and how to maintain it – for example, paying your bills on time accounts for 35 percent of your score. Help them understand lower credit scores mean higher interest that could cost thousands of unnecessary dollars. Medical Breakthroughs Revolutionary Growth Factor Technology (GFt) Helps Repair, Restore and Rejuvenate Hair Follicles BY: Fabulous Over 50 Correspondent

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, on an average day most people will lose anywhere from 50 to 100 stands of hair. On days that the hair is washed up to 250 strands can come out. If you are noticing hair on your pillow in the morning and more than just a few strands coming out when you brush your hair or comb it, these are cues that your hair is thinning at an accelerated rate. There are also other visual cues that you can look for over time. Although men’s hair tends to recede from the forehead or the crown of the head, women tend to notice thinning on the top third to one half of the scalp. Also you may notice that your part is gradually becoming wider or see more of their scalp than normal when their hair is pulled back. Hair loss in women can occur for many reasons including pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders, and anemia. Autoimmune diseases and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis are other causes. Your genes and the amount of stress you experience are also contributing factors.

He developed a state of the art treatment that uses stem cell and Growth Factor technology (GFt) to repair, restore and rejuvenate your hair follicles. Unlike some of the new over the counter treatments for hair loss, this new product called HRS has no side effects and if you stop using it, your hair will not fall out. Some things you can do at home to help minimize the process of hair loss include keeping your scalp clean and minimizing hair styles where your hair is pulled tightly (such as tight braids). Also avoid tugging or pulling too hard when combing or brushing your hair. Hair is considered an essential part of overall identity: especially for women, for whom it often represents femininity and attractiveness. Men typically associate a full head of hair with youth and vigor. People with hair loss worry that they appear older or less attractive to others. Well Med has a REAL solution for people with hair loss and will allow them to feel more attractive again. Using patented Human Growth Factor technology (GFt), our Hair Rejuvenation System (HRS) prevents hair loss, restores healthy hair growth cycles, increases circulation and nutrition to the scalp and hair follicles, and improves hair quality and texture. Want to start feeling more attractive again? Become a preferred customer and let our growth factor technology repair, restore and rejuvenate your hair!

By: Christine Neal As Pam Bates’ grandchildren got older, she found herself winded trying to keep up with them. “That is no way to live,” she told our reporters. “I want to be able to keep up with these kids, play with them at the playground and run after them.” She wasn’t able to do that at size 20. One day a friend of hers invited her to take a 90 day challenge with her. Two shakes a day, and a colorful meal. Having tried many other plans in the past that included everything from micro-planning meals, counting every calorie or keeping point scores daily, Pam thought she would give the Body By Vi 90 day challenge a try. “It, (the plan) was easy enough for me to wrap my head around” she says laughing. “This will fit with my busy lifestyle”. “The first 40 pounds just melted off!” Pam explains. “I don’t have to even think about this, it’s so easy.” Pam always hated grocery shopping and now just pops in to go for a quick trip around the perimeter of the store, getting some fresh veggies and fruit, some meat for grilling, and a few of her new staples, Peanut Butter, Frozen Fruit and Almond Milk. She purchases the no sugar added 35 calories a serving Vanilla Almond Milk for daily use and splurges on the Chocolate Almond Milk to get her though cravings and to make her favorite, Almond Joy shake that she sometimes will have for dessert. Pam has worked as an office manager at a Dental practice for a number of years. Working full time and coming home after work used to be more than enough activity for her. “I’d come home, start dinner, and start grazing,” she stated, “After dinner, we would sit in front of the TV, continuing to snack on whatever we had”. Now that she is used to having two shakes a day and a smaller, healthier plate for dinner, she no longer craves eating big meals and chooses to have meatless meals a few nights a week, or just a bowl of soup. When she dines out, she always splits a meal. She has a few co-workers on the program with her and keeps a blender at work. This allows her time to run errands at her lunch break or just relax for an hour. Helping others get involved with Body By Vi keeps her busy too. She has helped over 30 others get healthy and loose weight

by holding “Challenge Parties” for friends. When her friends and customers helped others, her group has grown. “My sister is on the program and has a lot less pain with her Roumitiod Arthritis,” Pam said, “and one diabetic friend, lost weight and no longer needs to take her medication”, she added. You should always check with your doctor before starting a program and never stop taking medication without your doctor’s approval.’ “Between phone calls and Challenge Parties, there isn’t time to sit around anymore”, Pam told us. On the nights that she doesn’t have parties, she goes to the local Y to participate in a dance exercise class she loves. “Having people that are in the class with you, helps keep you accountable” she says. “You feel like you have to go”, she added. So what is the key to her success? She told us, “Setting a 90 day goal and sticking with it really helped me. Commit to the Challenge, challenge yourself. I decided this is easy, this is good for me, and I am going to keep going”. And she has kept at it, and is now a size 16, she is feeling more energetic and healthy. “It amazes me how much people will spend on medication and health care, if only they would invest in something like this to lose weight and become healthier.” We couldn’t agree more.

Maintaining Youthful Skin By: Jill Moss Stetson

Your skin is your ultimate wardrobe. When you first meet someone you may look at their eyes and/or their clothes, but ultimately you get to their skin. And together these create an impression. Therefore, it is important to maintain healthy, beautiful skin. When your skin is healthy and beautiful your confidence increases too. So how do you maintain healthy beautiful skin? It starts with the basic skin care, then depending on your age, there are certain ingredients and treatments that are used as a maintenance strategy. Start with the basics: cleanse, tone, treat, protect. Cleanse your skin in the morning and night; in fact, cleanse your skin twice at night. First to remove make up and toxins that build up during the day, and a second cleanse to really clean your skin. Never go to bed with make up on! Next, tone if you are nourishing your skin, accelerating your cleanser, or want a very light exfoliation. This step is not always necessary, but when added, can enhance the results of other products. Follow this step with treatment products. In the daytime, treatment products are used to accelerate your protection from the sun or to actively treat a specific condition. Many times Vitamin C in the correct formulation enhances your sun screen (can never be used as one) while also brightening your skin and protecting it from free radical damage. In the daytime, minimally treat your skin with a sunscreen.

An additional step that is important is exfoliating your skin. This should be done 2 to 3 times a week. Usually this is done after your evening or night time cleansing. Exfoliating your skin removes all the dead cells on the surface so you get the best penetration from the products you use. This step also accelerates the cell renewal process through the epidermis to create healthy, beautiful skin. Equally important to these steps is understanding if you are using the correct products for your skin type with the right ingredients. A well trained esthetician can help you with both of these. Jill Moss Stetson has spent her career working in health care and considers herself fortunate that she truly loves the industry and her clients. She founded SkinTrust to empower and inspire you to be your own beautiful self at any age. She realizes that skin care is part of caring for yourself – looking and feeling your best. At SkinTrust the focus is for you to have healthy, beautiful skin at any age. JILL MOSS STETSON Licensed Esthetician Owner; Skin Trust

Night time is the best time for treating or using corrective products because they will work most effectively as your body is in a restorative state.

After the holiday binge, your liver and kidneys are working overtime trying to detox your blood. Toxins come by air, by the products we put on our body and mostly by poor food choices and diets. But if these organs work like a vacuum cleaner picking up the stuff we don’t want, how do they get cleaned? When a vacuum cleaner gets full, it doesn’t perform as well to clean your floors…hence the need to empty out the container. Same principle happens to our organs. They too need to be cleaned out so you can function better. Overloaded liver, kidneys and bowels can lead to weight gain, sluggishness, brain fog, constipation, skin issues and a host of other illnesses. So while all these holiday goodies may have tasted great, they provided little nutritional value, therefore making it difficult for the body’s organs and systems to function and perform their best. Simply put, all the sugar, fat and processed food make your organs work much harder than before. So what can we do for our bodies to make them function more efficiently so we can feel better? Detox. This simple concept of detoxification achieves the following health aspects:

Detoxing By: Karen MacNab

Invest in Your Health for the New Year!! After a busy season of hustle and bustle, many of us found ourselves over indulging too often over the past few months, getting sick, feeling tired and/or run down. Sound familiar? We spent money on holiday gifts and fancy foods, but how much do you invest in your health? Most of us don’t think twice about buying that latte, or eating those decadent pastries, candy and oh so many cookies. In addition, more alcohol is consumed during the holiday season as well. Where does it all go??…. yep, to those fat cells.

• Improves immune function • Scavenge free radicals and eliminate toxins • Strengthens the body’s fight against cancer cells and generate healthy cells • Cleanse mucous, congestion, fermentation, & inflammation in our digestive tract • Purifies the blood • Reforms our lifestyle addictions for sugar, salt, high glycemic carbohydrates, alcohol, junk foods, nicotine, etc. Detoxification provides a strong healing process for our body which helps to strengthen it. Since childhood, we have been accumulating toxins which results in our body being congested, inflamed, and damaged. Once detoxified, the body can then focus on doing the more important things like fighting back cancer and chronic degenerative diseases, restoring our health, and repairing the damage in our body. Nutrition Labels DECODED

Tips for Interpreting Nutrition Facts Labels (Family Features) Take a trip to the grocery store and you’ll encounter miles of aisles stocked with thousands of food products. Every product has a story to tell or better yet, sell. Information printed on packages is helpful but it’s often confusing and even a bit misleading. While lists of ingredients and the Nutrition Facts panel are there to help shoppers choose foods to fit their nutritional needs, it’s not always easy to interpret. Learning how to decode the jumble of numbers and percentages is the first step in shopping for healthier foods. “The best guide for making decisions affecting your diet is the nutrition facts panel, which is regulated by the FDA and for meats and poultry by the USDA,” said Carolyn O’Neil, registered dietitian and nutrition advisor for BestFoodFacts.org. “The Nutrition Facts panel lists all of the important specs, such as calories, fats, sodium, fiber, sugar and several key vitamins and minerals.”

• Always note SERVING SIZES: While a food or beverage may seem like a good nutritional read that a serving contains 100 calories, for instance, that may be for 8 ounces of a juice beverage and the container may hold 16 ounces.

• Be aware of unhealthy contents: If looking to limit FAT, SODIUM and SUGAR, pay close attention to these call outs on the label. Some foods might deliver more than your daily limit for sodium! Remember that trans fat should be avoided completely.

Nutrition label 101

Here are some of O’Neil’s tips on understanding nutrition labels, so you can be a more informed consumer and make healthier decisions for your family.

labels also spell out. Go for foods that are good sources of the good guys - DIETARY FIBER, VITAMINS A and C, CALCIUM, IRON and POTASSIUM.

• Don’t be fooled by healthy looks: While package design may illustrate people engaging in healthful activities, pretty farm scenes and adorned with “healthy” words, note that the FDA DOES NOT REGULATE the use of creative brand names. As always, it is the nutrition facts label where a consumer can see what’s really inside.

We started by using a match to her skin tone concealer or to cover the redness especially in her cheek area, then next minimized darkness under and around her eyes also. Next I used a mineral foundation Ivory 2 by Mary Kay, a great choice for over 50 skin as it doesn’t settle in fine lines and wrinkles. This gave a her a flawless canvas to start working on. Her eyebrows were darkened with a soft black brow liner picking up her natural hair. Her eyes are hooded so we highlighted her lids to brows with a Mary Kay Spun Silk highlighter color, and accented above her lid between her eye and eyebrow with a Chocolate Kiss Natural brown tone that picks up the light and opens up her eyes. Her eyes were then accented with brown liner and Ultimate Mascara. Finished her lips with a soft Pink Satin color. She looks polished and put together, natural beauty enhanced!

KAREN MACNAB Karen is a professional woman and Wellness Consultant. Beautiful on the outside, and even more beautiful on the inside. She has a medium contrast level, beautiful green eyes, great cheekbones, and hood eyes. The goal was to create a professional look, one that enhanced her eyes and natural features. I evened out her skin with a Mary Kay beige 2 mineral foundation that works great with more mature skin, doesn’t accentuate fine lines and gives a flawless finish. Her cheekbones are highlighted with a Sparkling Cider Mary Kay Mineral Cheek color, with the apples of her cheeks highlighted with citrus bloom. On the base of her eye look, I started with a Mary Kay Honey Spice Mineral Eye Shadow to make a clean fresh canvas for the rest of the eye look. due to her hood eye, I highlighted the upper outer half of her eye above the crease on the hooded area, drawing her eyes open and sparkling (Shade Chocolate Kiss , Mineral eye shadow), then accented with MK Mineral eye color in Raisin in the corner and crease. Dark brown eye liner eye tends the eyelid and frames the eyes. Topped off her look with Raisinberry Cream Lipstick and Cream and Sugar Lipgloss in the center of the lips. Karen then went an extra step, getting a shorter, sleeker chic haircut and new color. Karen, you are beautiful and fabulous over 50!

Classics are always on-trend – Love every look that goes down the catwalk but don’t know where to start? Choose an inexpensive trend or two each season to add a little flair to your existing look and over time your wardrobe will build as the seasons change. This year, everyone is wearing bold, monochromatic colors, like cobalt blue and glamorous gold. Complement these trends with affordable Hanes legwear in contemporary sheers, lace or opaque for a complete look. Find the latest styles for under $6 exclusively at select Walmart locations in your area. Always accessorize – The ultimate accessory worth a little splurge is always the handbag. Filled with your daily must-haves and part of your everyday routines, handbags are one area of your wardrobe that may just be the most splurge-worthy but make sure to invest in something that is designed to last. The latest look in handbags are structured bags with an old Hollywood feel inspired by the looks of the silver screen. Shiny metal chains, clasps and handles are also all the rage but just make sure to select a color that complements your everyday wardrobe. The key to building a great wardrobe is keeping it updated with a few affordable trendsetting pieces each season. But before you go shopping, sort through your clothes to determine what still works and what should be given away to charity or sold at your #11784_ARSource: Hanes favorite consignment store. Choosing the Right Model for Your Small Business Dream Millions toil away in their office cubicles, dreaming of owning their own piece of the American dream. Meanwhile, many entrepreneurial thinkers are using rough economic times as the catapult for making their small business dreams come true. With so many types of business models available, it can be hard to determine which one is the best fit for you. Brick and mortar Commonly thought of as the most traditional of plans, this business model involves businesses housed in physical buildings from which they sell their products. One major advantage of brick and mortar businesses is the personal interaction typically achieved between consumer and owner. Since the retail experience is part of what’s for sale, physical appearance and location of the facility need to be factored into the overall cost of running the business. Due to the rising popularity of online shopping, many brick and mortar businesses are turning to the internet, combining a physical location with an online presence. However, small businesses that offer services hat cannot be purchased through the internet, like hair and nail salons, still thrive with this method. BRICKS AND CLICKS The “bricks and clicks” model is typically used to describe a business with a both a retail and an online location. A major advantage of the brick and click model is it allows customers to see the product physically, coupled with the option to buy products with the convenience of a mouse click. Many businesses with a physical location also have a long-standing relationship with customers, and this can help boost their internet sales. This online component allows the entrepreneur to be well-positioned to compete with other online businesses. One disadvantage of the brick and click model is the higher overhead required to run both a physical location and keep a website fresh and current. Many examples of successful bricks and clicks businesses are retailers which, in particular, sell clothing and footwear. Local customers can go in to try on the wares physically and then purchase from the comfort of their own home. These same customers know they can ship items anywhere with the easy distribution provided by the online component.

FRANCHISE A franchise is a business model that involves two parties — a franchiser and a franchisee. Franchises are a good fit for those with an entrepreneurial spirit but who also may lack #11735_UF Source: The UPS Store business experience and would benefit from the structure, support and guidance the franchise model provides. To become a franchisee, an entrepreneur pays a fee and/ or shares the revenues of the business. Because a franchise is owned by a franchiser, the franchisee must follow set guidelines. For example, fast food franchisees typically cannot change their menus, logos or signage. The types of franchise opportunities are vast, but can include hotels, convenience stores and fast food restaurants. If you’re trying to narrow down your options, knowing your location and community is essential. Some franchise opportunities, such as The UPS Store, specialize in building franchise opportunities in small towns and rural locations. As many of these areas are underserved in business, packing and shipping amenities, such franchise models deliver a sought-after service for other small businesses and citizens within the community. Having a clear understanding of your community’s needs can ensure your new business venture is successful and profitable. It’s also important for franchisees to think outside the box when selecting their location. For example, some businesses, such as The UPS Store, can thrive in non-traditional locations, such as hotels, rural communities, university campuses, military bases and convention centers. For more information, visit www. theupsstore.com/mainstreet. DIRECT SALES Without a physical retail structure, the direct sales model sells products through independent distributors who specialize in faceto-face experiences with the consumer. One main benefit of direct sales is the ability to sell without overhead or supply costs of running a facility. Many direct sales entrepreneurs purchase their products directly from the parent company piecemeal, so no additional storage space is needed to house the product. A majority of direct sales businesses use a party plan with hands-on customer service to sell the product, and leverage their

personal involvement as an advantage over other methods of reaching customers. This type of business is often used to supplement other small businesses or as part-time employment, as it is often easy to sell through homes, jobs or other social communities. Examples of direct sales opportunities for small businesses include makeup, housewares, jewelry and vitamin products. 5 tips on creating a great business plan. Once you’ve determined which business model best suits your needs, developing a business plan is essential. Here are five tips from SCORE, a non-profit that grows successful small businesses across America, to help you get started:

• Take the long view and do long-term planning. Map out where you want to be five years from now and how you plan to get there.

• Write the plan yourself. You will learn more about your business by doing so.

Think of your plan as a living document. Review it regularly to make sure you are on track or to adjust for market changes.

• Share the plan with others who can help you get where you want to go, such as lenders, key employees and advisors.

• Understand you might pay a price in the short run to obtain long-term business growth and health.

How To Identify The One Thing You Were Born To Do By: Steve Olsher

To identify your Gifts, follow this three-step process: Step One: What do you love? To do this, first think about all the things you love doing and write them down. Think back: What did you enjoy as a teenager? Even if you haven’t done something for years, if it would still bring you pleasure, write it down. Focus on the activities and interactions that lift your soul. Avoid listing skills you’re good at simply because you’ve practiced them over time. Now, dig even deeper. And as an adult, what gives you goose bumps? Maybe it’s when you come up with a really good idea and you know you’ve found the solution you’ve been looking for. Tie the goose bumps moment to descriptions that encapsulate the activity in noun or adjective form — such as singing, teaching or healing. Next, think about your character traits. Are you bold, fearless, adventurous, funny, and/or entertaining? Perhaps you’re creative, intuitive, an organizer extraordinaire, and/or have a strong ear for music. Think about how these traits are expressed through your interactions and activities. For example, if you’re an organizer extraordinaire, maybe you love arranging people’s schedules or homes. The next step is to put the activities you’ve identified in order of preference.

Step Three: The Seven Seeds of Your Soul Now, get your lists of Things I Love Doing and Things I Hate Doing. Start with the top item on your list of Things I Love Doing and ask yourself each of the six questions below as it relates to the activity. Each answer should be a definitive yes or no.

1. Even if you didn’t get paid a cent for it, would you still do this? 2. Would doing this inspire you every day? 3. Does doing this come as naturally to you as breathing? 4. Do you feel you’ve been given a special gift to do this? 5. Does time seem to fly by when you’re engaged in this activity? 6. Can you possibly make money doing this? 7. Does performing this activity involve anything on my list of Things I Hate Doing?

If your thing you love to do involves doing two or more activities that you hate, you may want to rethink it. Identifying your WHAT is often a very emotional experience. It should move you and put a fire in your belly. Pursue living as who you were born to be and you’ll achieve your true destiny. Dig deeper into this concept in Steve’s book, What is Your What? Available at Amazon.com.

Step Two: What do you loathe? The next step requires you to be totally honest about all the things you hate to do. If you’re clear about which activities you despise, you can establish a strong foundation for moving your life forward by starting to let them go. Whatever it is that pushes your buttons (in a bad way), write them down.

Transform at any age

Making Changes

By: Erin Dubach

At 27, I met a woman who changed my life by showing me that anything is possible through strength and an indomitable will. She was my personal trainer and one of my greatest motivators. Her enthusiasm, ability to transcend, self-worth, and grit are beyond admirable. She was 50 years old at the time and had recently switched careers. Moving from hospitality to the fitness, she was the “least young” trainer at my women’s health club by nearly 20 years. Yet she was the best. She had a fire in her that set her apart from others, a fire fueled by the desire to earn her own strength. She taught me these three lessons: Lesson #1: Transformation is possible at any age. At any time, you have the power to change your physical body, your mindset, your habits, passion for life, your self-worth, and your self-love. Imagine the life you want. Begin to work for it. You will discover your power to change. Six months before Mary turned 50, she gifted herself a smoke-free life. She quit smoking cigarettes, but filled the void with chocolate and too much else. She gained weight and again said, “Enough is enough.” She joined a fitness facility where she does strength training three to four days each week. It was a battle, but Mary gained control of her eating and workouts, and learned the importance of eating clean consistently. According to Mary, “Some people may view 50 as ‘old’ but I viewed it as my half-way point and time to restart.” Mary has lost four pants’ sizes. At 52 years old, she completed an intense 9-week weight training program and has a six-pack. There is something about turning 50 that has been incredibly empowering. “The first time someone told me that they wanted to be just like me when they were my age, it stung a bit because I still feel like I’m 30, but I realize that there is no greater compliment. I work very hard to be healthy and I am happy that it shows!”

FabulousOver50.com

Lesson #2: Transformation makes you feel like a badass. The addition of weight lifting not only changed Mary’s body, but changed her mindset. While her physical strength is obvious, it surprised her that she is mentally stronger, too. “There is something very empowering when you wrap your hands around a heavy barbell and can complete 3 sets of 12 reps.” Fatigued and sore at the end of a session, she is also pumped “because you know if you can lift that weight you never thought you could lift, then you can accomplish many other things you thought were out of reach.” Lesson #3: Transformation is possible, given any circumstances. A woman wrote to me this week. Seven years ago, Terril was diagnosed with damaged heart valves. They told her valve replacement is inevitable. She was 56 years old. Four years later, during an exercise heart catheter, she had to repeat the same test 4 times because the machine was faulty. Terril said it was awful, but they learned that prolonged exercise improves her heart function. Knowing this, Terril made a courageous decision that changed her life. She joined the Allegheny Mountain Y Master’s Swim Association. Guess what? Now she swims competitively! Terril, at 63 years old, sets records. Over the Association’s last 40 years, she has the fastest time in three events and the second best time in several other events. She is very proud of these accomplishments, and says that “growing muscles at age 61 is pretty cool, too.” Erin Dubach is a Chicago-based dietitian, writer and professional speaker. Her goal is to help people transform their lives. She has a unique background of neuroscience, psychology, nutrition and fitness. The hottest thing she is doing now is Grocery Store Tours. Chicks Connect – More than Just a Networking Group - It’s a Movement By: Margaret Harmon - Chair Chick of the New Jersey Peeps I often get asked, “What’s the big deal about Chicks Connect? Why is it so different or special compared to other groups, organizations or clubs?” The short answer is: it’s unique because it is a movement that women can become a part of where they participate Photo credit: Firefly Studios in a mastermind growing personally and professionally. Women are bonded into a new type of network that supports them no matter where they are and what stage of life they find themselves. Now here is a more involved answer. I recently read a blog about a woman that was “ubber” successful, she had money, prestige, recognition, accomplishments, and her wall was covered with all the plaques, awards, and photos of the famous smiling with her. Secretly inside she was miserable both personally and professionally. Addiction became her anesthetic to numb her pain and keep reality at bay. Then she crashed and found herself in a very dark, lonely and scary place. After becoming sober and lots of therapy she was asked what she had learned. The answer was simple. Everyone needs a net. Nets are groups of people who watch out closely for each other and notice when someone needs help and then gives help. Sometimes we have nets in our churches, neighborhoods and schools and social circles. Because of the complex demands on women today and the many roles they have, often women neglect their needs and are walking the high wire of life with no nets or very weak superficial nets. So imagine being able to have one huge net that was dedicated to inspiring you to grow personally and professionally by connecting, supporting and encouraging you, while you did the same for other women. Being able to learn and grow from the weekly curriculum and find support in all areas like the ones mentioned and many others.

Inspiration, Accountability, Love, Fun and Support are a few of the amazing benefits of coming together and joining and or forming Chicks Connect Chapters. Sometimes we laugh until we need a Depends, or we cry until we are laughing. We listen to each other and we are heard when we speak, by the way that is HUGE! We can share our mistakes and forgive ourselves or others that just don’t get it. Sometimes we are challenged and other times we show up and are able to breathe, rest and renew. Often we teach and as my teens would sometimes say, “we get schooled”. It is real and we don’t have to pretend to be wearing the uniform of Superwoman with an “S” emblazoned between our boobs, stressing and thinking that we can do it all and never want for anything, all while looking like a super model wearing 5 inch heels. Women are helped; resources shared, lifelong friendships are made because of the unique combining of education + inspiration + accountability. The stories of overcoming adversity, learning from the experience and taking action to make positive changes in your life and the lives of others, makes this a powerful group. When coming together with other women, you will find that you are not alone in your challenges; personally and professionally and you will learn from the lessons already lived. What we all want is success. Success in our relationships, wellness, business, fun, family life and love of self. You will find you have a huge net that is dedicated to you, your happiness and success. Take the time to invest in yourself, you deserve it. It does not matter how old or young you are, or what you do from CEO to entry level to Mom/Grand mom or reinventing yourself. Through the regular Chicks Connect mastermind meetings and this amazing partnership of women – growth and success happens. We show up for ourselves and others. We are Chicks Connect. So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Chicks Connect is a Mastermind Support Network dedicated to connecting women on a global level, guiding them into action and holding them accountable for personal and professional growth and development all built on a foundation of love, fun, friendship, service and support. There is a membership fee of $27 monthly for Chicks Connect. We welcome all of you to join our Chicks Connect Sisterhood. We have launched our first chapter here. You will see the chapter meetings posted. If you are interested in our membership and want to join, we encourage you to sign up with one of the current Chicks Connect Members listed here.

“Most men lead lives of quiet

desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. ~ Henry David Thoreau

Live a Life You Love BY: Julia Skeesick

When it gets right down to it that is what we all want. To wake up with energy and enthusiasm, to enjoy what we are doing and who we spend time with. However, most folks report they do not really love their lives at all and if small talk is any indicator many of us spend a good deal of time complaining about our lives. I have come to the conclusion both through my own life and my work with others as a life coach, that if you want to love your life you must be willing to live it. Live it fully and authentically. Live it boldly pursuing what you want to do and being fully who you are. Fill your life with work that is meaningful, people that are important to you and activities you find fun and fulfilling. The questions is; are we willing to really do it? It seems like a basic recipe to live a life full of things and people you enjoy but we all know how difficult this is. What gets in the way of living a life you love? There are two primary factors. First, life. Its obligations and routines, its challenges and hardships. Most of us started out as creative and idealistic youths who slowly morphed into responsible adults graduating to middle age mediocrity. Somehow along the way a bit of the fire for life has dimmed, some of the dreams forgotten and a bit of the passion waned. We have gotten busy with the business of life. Children, Julia Skeesick,CPC. LifeScape Strategies www.lifescapesite.com 630.664.9740 careers schedules, mortgages and so on. We also have suffered our fair share of disappointments; illness, divorce, death, financial and emotional crisis, trauma. If you are lucky you still have a fire in your belly for living and enjoy a rich and rewarding life if not you may find yourself in a rut, bored and restless.

The second thing that gets in the way is ourselves. Human beings are both creatures of habit and cravers of change; as much and we innately want more we find comfort in the status quo. Moreover, we are afraid. All of us carry some fear of rejection or failure, and have some amount of negative undermining thinking all of which holds us back from fully being and doing what we want. A struggle ensues that can be both frustrating and exhausting as we attempt to manage the business of our lives with the pull to live lives that are meaningful happy and successful. When we mix in the anxiety of fear that holds us back thinking what if it does not work vs what if I do not try things get even more complex. In many cases these two factors combine and gang up on us as we unwittingly use the evidence of our busyness and disappointments to support our doubts and fears building a case for ourselves to not dare to dream. No wonder so many lead lives of quiet desperation as Thoreau described. In truth, the measure of success and happiness in our lives is a product of how well we manage these factors. Finding the courage to boldly pursue our lives despite fear and life’s challenges and obligations. If we are honest most of us have some aspects of our lives that have dropped by the wayside and need some attention. Some of us may have several areas we have just given up on, things in our life we do without, or tolerate circumstances and habits that are not healthy or suitable. Many of us have a song still within us. The thing about middle age is that it presents the perfect opportunity to stop and evaluate

Create a

Loving Relationship

with Your Spouse

Create a Loving Relationship with your Spouse Usually, in the beginning, when we “fall in love” we only see our beloveds good traits. We want to spend all of our time with him or her. We delight in each other’s company. Then we get married and reality begins to set in. What we used to love about our beloved becomes a most irritating trait. For example, your boyfriend/girlfriend is fun loving and spontaneous. They love to have fun. You have fun together. As the years pass, you get irritated because this person doesn’t plan ahead. They are so disorganized. And, possibly, you like order and neatness, and predictability. So you begin your list in your head. If only he/she could be organized and neat. If only he/she would be the way I want him/her to be. If only they would be more like me! Your list of judgments has begun. As the years go by, your list of judgments turns into anger. Your anger turns into resentments. You make nasty remarks to your spouse. You expect him/her to change. But, wait a minute, didn’t you marry this person because they were spontaneous and fun loving? As your resentments grow you grow further away from your loved one. You can’t understand how this person doesn’t see your point of view. After all, aren’t you right? We forget, the purpose of a relationship is not to be right, but to be loving. I challenge you if you are married or in a long-term relationship,to sit down by yourself and be honest. Write all the resentments you have against your spouse. Now, here comes the hard part. Again, rigorous honesty is the only method that will work. Next to each resentment, write how you may have hurt your spouse. Even if your spouse has hurt you, you are only taking your own inventory. Now think about ways you can change your own behavior. For example, let’s say you have nagged him or her to clean up their piles and put them away neatly. What can you do instead of nagging? You could ask only one time and tell your spouse how helpful that would be to you, and that you need their help.

Now, here comes the hard part. Do not ask again and again and again. Remember the only person you can change is yourself. Finally, write down all of your spouse’s good points. Are they hard workers? Are they good parents? Then in your mind, dwell on the good points. Whatever we focus on grows. As we focus on the good in our spouse our attitude begins to change. Again, be honest, only write down the good points that are true. And add one more thing. Begin to say thank you when your spouse does anything to please you. Get into the habit of saying thank you. The rewards to you are greater peace of mind, and the ability to be more loving. When we are more loving we become happier people. That is because we were created to be loving creatures. Each andevery one of us was created by God and has a piece of God inside of us. When we remove our resentments we become our authentic selves, as we were created to be.

Special Feature--Caregiver Resources Senior-Care-Central.com Connects People to Their Ideal Care Givers By: Kim Bitzer Are you having a hard time finding the perfect caregiver? Do you find yourself wondering where to find the right person to care for your loved one while you are away on vacation or just to check in on them a couple times a week to clean, prepare a meal, or give them a bath? Do you feel confident that you are leaving them in good hands? Traditionally, these caregivers are supplied through expensive Home Care agencies or found via classified ads and a series of interviews. But traditional Home Care can be very expensive even with insurance or Medicaid, if you can even qualify. Searching for care though the Help-Wanted section or placing an ad on Craigslist can be time-consuming and far from practical, especially since most need caregivers as quickly as possible. Senior Care Central eliminates all the hassle and gives you control in finding a caregiver by using technology to enhance these traditional methods. The result is a fully-functional, expedious way to find your ideal caregiver online with a comprehensive search for quality home health caregivers and skilled nursing services at home. Senior-Care-Central.com is an extensive database of caregivers. Browsing the membership site is free and all you need to do is enter your zip code to see the listings of providers in your area. To use the service to connect to caregivers information will cost a one-time lifetime membership fee of $39.99. Members are able to contact one another and make arrangements to meet once they are comfortable. Senior-Care-Central.com is continuously enhancing their site to make sure they are providing a convenient service to their subscribers. The founder, Kristen Mauk, Ph.D., is a professor of nursing at Valparaiso University. Dr. Mauk is a certified gerontological clinical nurse specialist and gerontological nurse practitioner, a Hartford Geriatric Scholar, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is also certified in rehabilitation nursing and is the current President of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses. With nearly 30 years of experience in rehabilitation and gerontology, she has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences. Dr. Mauk has edited and contributed many educational nursing books and journal articles. Her research interests include stroke rehabilitation, geriatric rehabilitation, and

staff/student education. Dr. Mauk holds the Kreft Endowed Chair for the Advancement of Nursing Science, a position dedicated to gerontological nursing. She is an expert on caregiving and has written eight books on the subject. Throughout her teaching career, Dr. Mauk was constantly asked for referrals for home caregivers. In many of these cases, the person who needed the care didn’t qualify for home care as per their insurance policy. They needed an affordable solution to help get them the care they needed. Dr. Mauk would email her nursing students and connect them with caregiving job opportunities. This cut the cost of using a traditional home care service, which often has a four hour minimum and after seeing a need, Dr. Mauk, along with her husband, James Mauk founded Senior-Care-Central.com to meet that need. Dan Easton heads the social media part of the business. Senior-Care-Central.com serves the member and caregiver needs nationwide and speeds up the process of finding a caregiver right away. You can set your own care terms and find someone who is willing to work with you and your loved ones by searching in your local area. Whether you are looking for a nursing student to help you get to the grocery store once a week or need someone by your side all day, you can find qualified individuals by becoming a member of Senior-care-central.com online. By using Senior-care-central.com, you take control of your home care by finding a local caregiver that works well with you and your family.
