advance senior tech center
A relaxing space where the aging population can learn about and use current technology without intimidation. A welcoming environment offering opportunities for education, relaxation, and socialization to those willing to seek it.

Advance is a center meant to provide access to and education about current technology to those over the age of sixty. It is founded on breaking the stigma that seniors are “too old to understand technology, when there is ample evidence proving otherwise. The center is specifically designed to feel residential rather than overwhelmingly modern, in order to provide the user with an environment in which they can feel comfortable casually using technology as well as asking for help should they need it. The different types of spaces support a variety of activities, from playing video games to working to hosting watch parties, and are entirely ADA accessible so users of any ability can enjoy the amenities.

The glass stair enclosure lines up with symmetrical windows on opposite sides of the building, creating a visual axis that provides a connection to nature and ample natural light for a technological space. The wooden slat detailing is reminiscent of the prairie grass native to Nebraska, where the project is located.

CAPTURE work. discover. share. A space for those who want to capture the world: photographers, videographers, journalists, bloggers, writers. People who are drawn to stories, places, people, and life itself. People who strive to find and spread these stories and use them to make a difference.

Capture is a coworking space meant for those whose primary office is the world itself. The interior is inspired by its traveling users, with rentable lockers, various types of workstations, and worldly decor. Spanning two stories, its main focal point is a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall that displays the work of those that have utilized the space. Other amenities include: flexible conference rooms that can double as classrooms; a photography studio complete with infinity wall, changing rooms, hair and makeup station, and a separate conference room; and a flexible space that can function as a cafeteria and lounge by day and an event space by night, to host such events as seminars, film screenings, and fundraisers.

The Full Plate is an urban food center dedicated to educating the community about the benefits of eating home-cooked, healthy meals. Its three main programs include an education center comprising of flexible classrooms and teaching kitchens, a co-op market featuring food and goods from local farmers and artisans, and a large community garden which provides food for both the market and the teaching kitchens. The functioning of the building is supported by a multi-story coworking space, a second-story rentable event space overlooking the central atrium, and a cafe that is open to the public. The furniture and finishes throughout the building are inspired by nature, meant to bring some green into the concrete jungle of downtown Lincoln.

The teaching kitchens are designed to be welcoming to users from all walks of life, channeling residential rather than commercial styles. They also feature ample space for eating, with movable tables and stackable chairs so meals can be shared with any number of friends. Paired with the classrooms and community garden, classes can range from simple cooking classes to growing your own food, buying on a budget, or starting a more nutritious diet.

The Collector's Retreat DN
Meant specifically for an experienced bug collector, this hobbyist retreat is designed to juxtapose the fluidity of nature with the rigidity of science, the two main components involved in the hobby. This concept is carried out through the use of curvilinear forms, wood, and plant life to represent nature, and rectilinear forms, grids, glass, metal, and concrete to represent science. Careful note was taken of the equipment and processes involved in bug collecting in order to understand what would be necessary for the space, which led to the creation of three rooms with distinct purposes: one for collecting and storing specimens, one for studying and pinning them, and one for displaying and storing pinned collections. The retreat also features a rooftop garden and an exterior living wall, so the user can cultivate his own insect garden and be truly connected to nature.
