1940’s- 1950’s In the 1920’s, the main trends were athletic and sporty. Sleeveless dresses that were knee length were most common. Costume jewelry was very popular during this time period. In 1923, the flapper style is very popular because women needed to wear it to dance the Charleston. In 1926, Coco Chanel made the little black dress, which ended up becoming the most essential pieces to have in your closet for fashion. In the 1930’s, menswear inspired clothing were a big trend during this time period. Sportswear was also a main trend, along with paintsuits. For men, full-cut trousers and tuxedos with tails set the standard for how men should dress.

In the 1940’s, shorter hemlines, shirtdresses, thick heels, mix and match styles and the military look were big trends. A fabric shortage caused the shorter hemline trend. For men, single-breasted jackets and cuff and pleat-free pants become popular. In the 1950’s, dresses became rounded with ballerina silhouettes. Pencil Skirts, stilettos cocktail dresses, capri pants and stiletto heels were popular trends. In 1954, Chanel shows the famous black suit jacket that is collarless with a trim that is a gold chain. For men, trim tailoring and accessories like hats and pocket squares were popular.


In the 1960’s, Jackie Kennedy’s style was quite influential. Early sixties had mod and miniskirt trends. Late 60’s was when the hippie style came about. In 1969- first man on the moon sparks hippie fashion. For men, flared trousers, flower shirts, wide lapels were popular. In the 1970’s, the main trends were bell bottom pants, platform heels and menswear looks. Patriotic colors were very popular a well. Diane Von Furstenberg created the first wrap dress. For men, loose-collared, deconstructed tailoring and floppy collars are in style.

In 1980’s the preppy look, retro 1950’s fashion, pop music styles, acid wash jeans, crop tops, exercise wear, leggings, big sweaters, pumps were all huge trends. Neons, brights, jewel tones and bold colors were popular. For men, ties and suspenders were in style. Broad shoulders with bold colors and graphic patterns were a trend. In the 1990’s, Baggy jeans, crop tops, overalls, floral dresses, platform tennis shoes were the trends.For men, loose and baggy silhouettes are in style. Business casual clothing starts during these years.


In the 2000’s, vintage and retro fashion, bohemian skirts, skinny jeans, tunics, shirtdresses. Popular designers were Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney. Men start dressing up again in this era. They wore more colors and patterns.
