On the air. On the Fourth of July, 1981, an engineer in a small Indianapolis studio flipped a switch and sent a new radio station out onto the airwaves. WENS-FM came to life and, within a few months, claimed a spot as one of the city’s top three stations. But that engineer wasn’t just airing another radio station – he was

launching Emmis Communications, a company that over the next couple of decades would become one of the nation’s most respected media companies. With radio, television and magazine operations in large and mediumsized markets across the U.S. and in Europe, Emmis has built its business by adhering to the same philosophies that prompted its creation a quarter century ago: take risks, hustle, treat people right, and operate with passion and compassion. These are the values that have made Emmis a destination company for professionals who want to win the

Why Emmis?

about our logo The letter “e” pushing outside the boundaries of a box exemplifies our “outside the box” approach to everything we do. We have a long history of looking at our businesses differently. From programming to sales to employee relations, we stand out.

Leading the way.

Emmis has a reputation for innovation, and a history of being rewarded for its innovation. The company:

Adoption assistance Domestic partner benefits

pioneered such formats as hip-hop radio, the 24-hour all-sports station and adult classic soul radio was the first in the nation to have the No. 1 stations in New York and L.A. simultaneously consistently outperforms its markets and the industry in many financial and ratings measures was the only American company to receive a national license to operate in Hungary – the resulting network reaches 4 million of Hungary’s 11 million citizens. partnered in 2004 in developing The Daily Buzz, a morning news show targeting younger viewers and now reaching 33 percent of the U.S. population

eleven 11 commandments Admit your mistakes.

Be flexible - keep an open mind.

A different way.

Be rational - look at all the options.

Not long after a new employee joins Emmis, he or she receives a large, white envelope. Inside that envelope is one share of Emmis stock. Now, I know that one share of stock isn’t going to change anyone’s life. But I hope it does send a message: I want the people of Emmis to feel and act like they own the company. And I want them to reap the benefits of the company's success.

Have fun - don’t take this too seriously. Never get smug. Don’t underprice yourself or your medium - don’t attack the industry; build it up.

5

Believe in yourself - if you think you can make it happen, you will.

4

Never jeopardize your integrity - we win the right way or we don’t win at all.

3

Be good to your people - get them into the game and give them a piece of the pie.

2

Be passionate about what you do and compassionate about how you do it.

1

Take care of your audiences and your advertisers - think of them and you’ll win.

But, most of all, I want them to believe that this company is different. When I started in the media business, you could only get ahead by jumping from company to company. I thought there must be a better way. So I started Emmis, naming it after the Hebrew word for “truth” and making it a place where people could succeed by finding a home. A place that treats people well, lets them have fun, gives them the tools they need to succeed, and offers them “a piece of the pie.” As you get to know us a little better, I think you’ll find that this is exactly the kind of place you’re looking for. Thanks for considering Emmis.

Emmis Communications takes its corporate citizenship seriously. As a fast-growing international media company, we know we must use our resources to address pressing problems. And as a collection of local broadcasters and publishers, we believe we should use our stations and publications to improve individual communities. The company backs these beliefs with deeds: Emmis has pumped millions in

cash, in-kind contributions and fund-raising into its communities. And those dollars met a range of needs, from putting new coats on children to providing notfor-profit agencies with services they could not otherwise afford. Over the years, these activities have been recognized with a variety of awards and honors – most notably, in 2002, Emmis was the second-ever recipient of the National Association of Broadcaster

Education Foundation’s Hubbard Award “for extraordinary involvement in serving the community.”

As host of the No. 1 morning show on L.A.’s No.1 radio station (KPWR-FM), Big Boy not only has hundreds of thousands of listeners a day, but he also attracts the likes of Shaq and Will Smith to join him on-air. And it’s all good: The 2002 Marconi Award winner throws his weight around to raise big bucks for L.A.-area charities.

Commitment to diversity

When KHON-TV (Honolulu) news anchor Leslie Wilcox saw a need in her community, she didn’t open her purse – she opened her heart and founded the Lokahi Giving Tree Project, working with the Salvation Army to help needy Hawaiians receive assistance.

An Indianapolis doctor who wanted to boost his client base turned to the WYXB-FM sales team, which didn’t just sell him an ad – it helped him find better seminar locations, changed his marketing focus and found a vendor willing to provide co-op dollars and products for give-aways. The result? Seminar attendance jumped five-fold.
