Croatian Bathhouse Zagreb, Croatia | bathhouse 14,000 m2 | Fall 2017 Prof. Saťa Begović and Danica Selem A derelict wagon workshop has the potential for redevelopment that reconnects the peripheries of the old and modern Zagreb city centers. Using the bathhouse as an exploratory program, citizens and visitors alike can experience a sensory garden: various social and invigorating baths designed to be engaging and intergenerational.

Caniçal Marine Biologist Hermitage Madeira, Portugal | residence, laboratory 100 m2 | Spring 2017 Prof. Paulo David and João Almeida The easternmost point of the Portuguese island of Madeira is the intersection of tectonic rifts responsible for the volcanic islands. Ponta de São Lourenço is a natural reserve on a site of polarity: the northern side is extremely steep and windy, the southern side is calm and pleasant. Duality, polarity, and isolation inform the program: a hermitage for a marine biologist to live on the reserve and a research center to archive. Material choices are influenced by the folded, layered igneous rocks that define the landscape.

Anabel’s Grocery Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 100 ft2 | Spring 2017 Center for Transformative Action Anabel’s Grocery is a project that aims to combat food insecurity at Cornell University. This student helping students initiative is a student designed and operated grocery store conveniently located on campus open since August, 2017. The design of the space strives to be welcoming and warm in its material palette and to ensure students feel comfortable. The design team is responsible for the layout and design of the space as well as construction of the point of sale counter and shelving. A POP - UP Shop was opened in Willard Straight Hall to test the sale system and raise awareness of Anabel’s upcoming opening. In collaboration with Alisa Tiong, Alexandra Donovan, Anders Evenson, Vicky Chen, and Natsuko Suzuki

We designed a pavilion with vacuum-formed algae pods that provides shelter and nourishment. Each of the pods is able to be aerated through a system of tubes. In collaboration with Laura Kimmel, Cristina Gonzalez, Sisi Yu, Ruby Kaur, and Yao Mi

Architectural Aquarelle New York City, NY | gallery, exhibition 16,000 ft2 | Fall 2016 Prof. Mark Morris Watercolor rendering can be used to explore the development of space. After a fire, the American Watercolor Society and the Salmagundi Club are left with the original brownstone facade along 5th Avenue. The site is constrained by large neighboring apartment towers, which obstruct direct light. The new construction maintains the historical bar and billiards room program, but adds demonstration, inspiration, and auditiorium spaces. An oblique structural wall references the New York City grid shift off the NorthSouth axis, and provides opportunities on each floor for specific programmatic interventions. Two structural strageties are employed: a suspended structure respects the original brownstone facade, while structure in compression provides gallery spaces.

Flexure Montezuma Wetlands, NY | visitor center 5400 sq ft | Fall 2014 Prof. Sasa Zivkovic Flexure is a selectively permeable membrane to allow transport on different scales. Flexure seeks to change how visitors interact with the site. Drained in 1817 during the construction of the Erie Canal system, birds on migration stop at the wetlands during the summer months to feed on exposed mud flats and increased vegetation growth.

Water regulation is commonplace to maintain vegetation balance. It is clear that the driving force in the wetlands is water management. A modified rammed earth embankment with a folded plate canopy invites birds and humans alike. Flexure controls the flow of water to temporal pools to attract birds to the site.

Biowarmth Ithaca, NY | reading pod 1.5 m2 | Fall 2014 Prof. Sasa Zivkovic Biowarmth capitalizes on an individual’s body heat and the site specific micro-climate to insulate a reclining occupant. The armature is constructed within a $100 budget (only $75 used) using one plywood sheet, piano wire, and recycled plastic bags. We achieved a temperature difference of 25° F to provide a comfortable climate controlled space for reading or resting after a long day in studio. In collaboration with Jeremy Bilotti and Kate Chen

Harp Sponge Siteless machine | abstraction marionette Fall 2013 Prof. Val Warke and Jim Williamson The harp sponge is a carnivorous sponge that exists off the central California coast at depths around 11,000 ft. I analyzed the spatial mating behavior and mechanism that allows the sponge to capture prey. Through abstraction, those actions were studied to create two mechanisms: one that can capture stray people and one that can be operated to create a drawing. This drawing was then interpreted through analog models and drawings to create a hermitage for a scientist that studies harp sponges.
