PREFACE The following portfolio has been designed with an intentional and deliberate editorial style that aims to complement the volume of work at hand. After months of editorial design, debate and precedence research a final composition was chosen. The choice of an A4 landscape template spread across two A5s allows the reader to maximise his or her understanding of the work negating any opportunity to allow the eye to wonder between space by having the eye focus more on the visuals versus text. lives. Architecture in essence should serve to serve. Architecture should act as a communication device between the end-user of that space and their environment and the end-user and the architect. Responsive design is bred from a critical understanding of one’s own environment. This knowledge can only be understood further if one understands the potential that architecture has in communicating ideas.
Inspiration
NORMATIVE STANCE Following a three year introduction to the application of good design and conscious design ethics in the field of architecture, I have come to a deepened understanding of who I am as a designer. WHO AM I THEN? As a multidisciplinary designer with an intrinsic understanding of design I have always been drawn to the idea that architecture, design, illustration, film and any other field pertaining to the arts are of vital importance. Design itself is a culmination of all spheres of life, and through life design is born. This understanding of the importance of design has led to a pursued interest in experimenting with various design procedures in order to create a desired object. The outcome may not be in keeping with my specific style - but through experimentation I know a style, well-suited to my design philosophies, will manifest itself. “Alway keep your eyes open. Keep watching. Because whatever you see can inspire you.” - Grace Coddington, former creative director of American Vogue. Power of Expression Having spent a year working alongside Carin Combrinck, I have learned a few things regarding the emphasis that architecture has on a our
Site Specific Another valuable lesson learned from the experience of working this year is that architecture needs to take heed of its immediate environment. Architecture cannot stand independent of the environment it is built in. It cannot isolate itself from the needs of those who inhabit its internal spaces or surrounding spaces. It must act, once again, as a identifiable tool by which those who utilise it, utilise it well. Architecture therefore needs to have a bottom-up approach. Architecture therefore needs to understand the community it serves first before it can understand its standing in the greater whole. Regional understanding of the client and/or community is of utmost importance in design and architecture.

CIM LOGO DESIGN
From the design of my CIM logo it is apparent that I have a very clear and concise understanding of what is that needs to be done when the problem presents itself. I believe in phasing projects according to levels of importance and urgency. This methodical application of design approach has led me to critically delegate tasks and decipher the more necessary from the less necessary work loads at hand.
The following logo was created as a stamp for future works constructed by me. I made use of my initials - CIM - as a generator for the structure of the logo. The hardness and straight-edge design manifests itself from a culmination of ideas that are currently relevant to the way I approach my design work, namely graffiti and architecture, and the potential they have to influence one-another.
The most outstanding work I have produced has been through intuitive thinking that has gone on to methodically thought out in terms of execution. I pride myself on the fact that I can, if needs be, resolve a large volume of work in the shortest possible time frame to the best of my ability.
The logo, and my own wants from the project, demanded a very geometric understanding of the use of triangles and the influence they have in the construction of the letters used in the logo. The above illustration is indicative of this.

2012 MURRAY & ROBERTS DES BAKER // 1st PLACE WINNERS, CAPE TOWN Des Baker is undoubtedly the highest awarding accolade that an undergraduate student studying architecture in South Africa can receive. The AZA Student conference held in conjunction with the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa established a brief which aimed to express the views or ideas of architecture by mean of a narrative. My partner Johann Wiese and I explored the idea of ‘memory as the architect’. With a core concept in hand, we developed the idea further stating that architecture can act as a trigger to unlock suppressed memory. Psychosis Theatric thus explores the
Psychosis Theatric utilised the extended metaphors of capitalism as something that has the potential to completely destroy relationships between individuals in South Africa. The secret killing machine housed in the cooling tower represents the conflicting ideologies of our two character who both represent two economies entities vying for capital of the power supply market in Pretoria. This struggle once again highlights the breakdown in human interaction that we so frequently see in our daily lives.

Y3 : MICROFORM The brief entailed designing a houseboat that would be self-sustaining and meet the minimum requirements needed to house an occupant whose only primary concern would be for shelter, safety and a means of travel. The approach to the project was a theoretical one aimed at exploring the possibility of utilising micro-organisms as a material to construct an architecture that could identify itself in an environment, therefore programming itself to adapt instinctively to the occupant and the immediate environment. Investigation into this lead to the discovery of the work of Steve Pike, who believes the manner in which these micro-organisms colonise their environment, how they communicate, organise and negotiate their territory along with these mechanisms and purpose they employ, provide metaphorical parallels with human colonisation, with added benefit of being an abundant and renewable resource.
STEVE PIKE , CONTAMINANT // MMXII
Having identified a material, the project then required the investigation of how such material could be made into something tangible, something with surface, something that could contain. This led to the discovery of the work of Marcos Cruz, whose contribution to Neoplasmatic Architecture, led to the idea of ‘Flesh’ (the surface, the container”). Ultimately, he aims to discuss a future vision of the body in architecture by exploring ‘Flesh’ as a new concept that allows rethinking our common and more traditional understanding of architecture. Central is the investigation about Human Flesh [the Body] and a new emerging Architectural Flesh; a broader discussion about Aesthetics of Flesh. STEVE PIKE MARCOS CRUZ MARJAN COLLETTI

Y3 : SCAR TISSUE The project explored the idea If architecture is to have a
of varying the domestic typologies which one could apply to architecture in a post-apocalyptic Tshwane. The brief posed the question, “Can architecture create dwelling after modernity?” Can architecture adapt itself sufficiently and efficiently enough to a society in which resources and other commodities are scarce? Can architecture heal itself effectively post apocalypse.
healing/regenerative process then it will need to have some means of getting there. The project, stemming from interpretive analysis of Wood’s work, identified that a ‘wound’ (attained from conflict) will only heal itself once the regenerative ‘new tissue’ (occupants) starts forming a ‘scab’ (new domestic typology) that will eventually leave behind a ‘scar’ (lasting impact) on the body (the urban context, city, building).
“Architecture is war. War is architecture.” – Lebbeus Woods. LEBBEUS WOODS Questioning this led to the discovery of Wood’s Radical Reconstruction, in which he states, “The spaces of the old city were shaped to sponsor conventionality. In their damaged state, they offer an entirely new possibility for understanding the origins of both space and habitation. The architect leads the way by codifying this understanding only in terms of space, without fixed reference of habitation”.

Y3 : PAVILION The Olympic Pavilion was designed as a dual function pavilion that would host shooting during the 2024 Olympics in Tshwane and serve as an Ecological Research and Algae Monitoring Facility post Olympics The project entailed designing a three phase programme: Phase 1 (2024): Olympic Games 2024. Phase 2 (2024-2030): The Ecological Research and Algae Monitoring Facility would serve to create awareness for possible fuel alternatives, such as bio-fuel obtained and refined from algae gathered from the replenished Apies River east of the site.
The hosting of the Olympic Games (Phase 1) would be done so in a post-apocalyptic Tshwane in which a resource and other values commodities would be scarce. This restriction aided the design in questioning the current approach to shooting in a contemporary Olympic context. I t was decided that the sport, along with the pavilion would re-assess and re-appropriate the sport and the architectural typologies of shooting pavilions to a climate which emphasised (hyper-exaggerated) lack of resource. This meant that the weaponry right through to the materials used in the structure would be modified to suit a post-apocalyptic Tshwane.

Y2 : EMBASSY The design of the Myanmar HAND RENDERED Embassy has to this date been DRAWINGS one of the best projects I have submitted. The entire composition of the floor plan right through to the elevation sections were all highly thought of as integral parts of a whole. The construction techniques employed served to highlight the tectonic interplay between elements. The openness of floor plan illustrated transparency of Myanmar’s progressive move towards independence.

BUBBLE FAT Bubble Fat is a sketch series I did for exhibition at Park Acoustics, Pretoria as well as for OppiKoppi Music Festival, Northam.
BUBBLE FAT CREW
The sketch series is comprised of 5 characters . Each character is an illustrative example of contemporary sketch styles applied in street culture. Each sketch is generated from a circle and from there each character is developed.
dnb klap - based on the effects, colloquially known as ‘bass-face’, experienced when listening to drum & bass music.
astro fat - based on space invader themes popularised in street culture.
phat cap - based on the Montana Gold/Black’s ‘fat cap’ aerosol nozzle.

THE KIT The Kit sketch series has been SPRAY CAN one of the best sketch series MARKER produced by me thus far. RESPIRATOR It explores the three primary tools used in street art. The art work itself tried to compliment a very geometric application of shapes and forms as a means of juxtaposing the dogma that street art is only there to vandalise space when in fact a lot of contemporary street art today, like the shapes in the composition, are well thought out prior to application and/ or construction of a sketch or mural.

GRAFFITI Street art and street culture are as important to me as the air I breath. I have always been a great believer that one day the gap between street art and architecture would be bridged. My appreciation for the art started with my interest in calligraphy and hand-styles used in constructing letters. The geometric application of shapes and forms used in conjunction with an environment that has volume, space and dimension has always excited me.
