to be able to experience the genius loci of the special location within the alps, we proposed a shell which would develop out of the mountainside and into the canyon, guiding the view into the canyon. we used the created space between the building and the mountain as a thermal buffer zone to host the main vertical transportation of our building and. by developing this kind of interspace, we allowed the visitor to experience the incline of the mountains within the building. in further development, we detailed plans and sections to a scale of 1 to 5 and prooved our design in physical models.

pavilion
tum summer pavilion 2011 as an embodiment of the tu munich, the summer pavilion should be a challenging and innovative design, both technically and visually. inspired by the works of the american artist tara donovan, we developed a pavilion from bent plywood strips, whose profiles are used to guide the sunlight and create a complex mix of light and shadow. the shape and depth of the strips allow a free line of sight while standing in the center of the pavilion, while only objects in the center are visible from the outside. the circular shape of the pavilion and the containing drops optimizes the statics. the wood is primarily under compression, allowing the delicate profiles. by using parametric modeling tools like grasshopper, we further optimized the production and assembly of the relevant parts. this allowed us full control over the whole production process, facilitating the model making. with georgina simon-seybold, mathias sant‘anna, doria bornheimer, vivian brune und yaejee han

in a student competition, the initiative proholz was looking for an exhibition stand for the agriculture fair 2012. the stand should, as a key philosophy of proholz, communicate the qualities of the product wood as a building material. in my opinion, especially the appearance, the look, the smell and the haptics, are the qualities of wood and they are best perceived by direct contact to the raw material. as a concept which would force that kind of of direct contact, i developed a system of different sized wooden steles which would create a way through them, but still being close enough to one another to force physical contact when trying to get through. i developed the whole project from the beginning, by using the parametric design program grasshopper, which allowed me to translate my understanding of architecture and idea of design into a set of rules which would key code elements and further control the system of steles. not only would it define the size of the elements, by relating to their distance to the implied way, but also create relevant joints and intersections, allowing an easy switch of scale at any time of the process and enhancing the relation between design and production.

since the winning design was realized within the following semester break, the feasibility of the projects was a key issue from start throughout the whole project. for that reason, we formed teams with three students of the tum civil engineering course. together, in a creative dialog, we were able to evaluate the design in detail and find coordinated Pavillion approach for structural and technical issues.proHolzChristopher Martin Timm Hanoeffner Katharina Ronge because of the short time frame for the Korbinian Pötzl realization of the projects, construction details, structural calculations, a building sequence as well as the building application were already Stützenkopf Stütze Kiefer sägerauh part of our submission. 18cmx18cm

library
a public library for belfast 2013 as a enhancement for the city and community, our aim was to design a library in the city center of belfast. besides room arrangement and appearance, we should especially develop a consistent concept for the relation between the window and the room. to deal with the historical buildings surrounding the site, i developed a simple volume whose faÇade uses an abstraction of a typical victorian faÇade, both in proportion and material, this allows my building to integrate into the surrounding structure without dominating it. the strong regularity of the faÇade reflects into the building itself, whose structure is a system of massive concrete columns with an increasing density towards the lower levels, showing the mass of both building and content. since the building is within a dense urban area, direct lighting is difficult and sunlight can rarely enter through the faÇade. to deal with that challenge, i not only created the massive lightwell in the middle of the building, but also enhanced the positive effect of indirect lighting through reflections from surrounding faÇades by optimizing the size and shape of the openings. as a result, lighting for the individual work spaces is maximized whereas the bookstock is protected against direct sunlight.

crosssection perspective view
by reducing the interior materials to concrete, wood and glass, i am reducing distraction and creating a humane working environment. structurally, the building consists of a main system of in-situ concrete, supported by a second layer of precast concrete elements, in between which the thermal insulation is situated. the gap between these layers is also used to hide the window frames, creating a simple and delicate impression. flooring, working spaces and furniture are contrasting the concrete with their warm tone, a lowered ceiling allows hidden air conditioning to provide constant conditions for both books and people. throughout the semester, we developed the window and faÇade section to a scale of 1 to 20 and created technical details to a scale of 1 to 5. we further showed proof of concept in both, physical and 3D models.

to deal with the extreme climate conditions in jordan, we were asked to design a shelter for the local women in tubas, jordan. the task was looking for a flexible concept, being able to deal with the difference between hot summers and a cold wet winter season, as well as strong winds from different directions and balance these conditions. Section Diagram furthermore, we were supposed to enable our design to be realized completley in a 3d printing technique, developed by enrico dini(dinitec.it).

our design created a network of cells and struts, over layering each another, which allowed us to block nearly all of the direct light during the summer months but maximizing the low angle winter light and balancing the thermal conditions inside. the structure, which occupies the whole site, air flow allows the collection ofCool nearly all the water during the rainy winter season, transport it through hollow struts to a underground storage and finally providing it for plants and people during the hot summer month. in addition to collecting and providing the water, the porous sandstone structure also allows evaporation, cooling the surrounding and improve Ventilation the local micro climate during the hot season. Ecotec Analysis - Model picture
to develop a structure which is able to fulfill such a diverse task, we occupied the whole site with a three dimensional voronoi, which we controlled in the parametric design program grasshopper by introducing rules and conditions. movement axis, visual protetction, sunlight direction and weather condition as parameters then controlled the creation, orientation and size of struts and cells. where visual protection was necessary, the program created a lot of smaller cells over layering each another whereas areas for gathering were made by reducing the amount of cells and enlarging them. as a next step, we paired our plugin with the sun analysis tool ecotec from autodesk to optimize the structure within the outer layer for better lighting and energy conditions. published in the tum yearbook 2013 - page 125 with jingshi ouyang mengyue lu

theater
temporary theater for ingolstadt 2014 during the next years, the theater of ingolstadt will be fully refurbished and not be available as a stage for the cultural live of the city. to allow professional performances during that period, the task was to create a temporary theater, capable of continuing cultural events. the technical detailing and future dismantling process were important criteria alongside program and design. my proposal is situated in a tension field between the existing theater and the city center of ingolstadt and the historic buildings of klenzepark directly alongside the river. opposing both, the 18. century historic context as well as the 1960 existing theater, i chose a simple form and reduced materials to steel and glass, allowing a view into the city instead of challenging it. the functional program is very compressed, providing the minimum required for an ongoing business, so all attention is focused on the stage. the stage itself is according to shakespear‘s Globe Theater, where actors play on the proscenium while the stage holds the scenery. the audience is flanking the stage on three sides and two levels, creating a very high density and thereby close relation between actors and audience.

to provide full dismatabiliy and underline the temporary character of the building, i developed a steel construction, based on spot footing. the exterior is a rear-ventilated curtain faÇade made of corrugated sheets, while openings are a complete post and mullion constrution. the upper floor is fully glazed, with a cover of extended metal sheets, providing visual and sunlight protection simultaneously allowing open views into the city and the park. the partition wall for the main theater room continues the corrugated metal faÇade, replacing the thermal insulation with sound insulation elements. the roof construction is a steel framework, which creates an interspace in the roof layer, able to host all necessary technical installation.
