DARCI JORDAN | HUB SPRINGFIELD
The Westcott House and Springfield Public Art have partnered for the next large scale public art project for Springfield.
Janel Young, a prolific artist based in Chicago, who has been commissioned to create a new piece of art for Springfield.
“We want to update the community on the projects that Springfield Public Art has helped bring to life in Downtown,” says Chris Schutte, vice president of destination marketing and communications for The Greater Springfield Partnership. “And we want to introduce them to our next collaborator - Janel Young.”
Schutte says Young has ties to Springfield, and her name came up in a committee meeting.
“After reviewing her qualifications, the committee was fully on board,” says Schutte.
Young is a Pittsburgh native, based in Chicago as of 2022. She is a painter, muralist and community leader on a mission to inspire through creativity and play.
Young’s work has been recognized locally and internationally, from New York City – where she resided for 6 years – to the coast of Sydney, Australia.
For three years as the Community Artist in Residence at UrbanKind Institute based in Pittsburgh, Young utilized visual arts as a communication tool to connect people to equity and justice values and initiatives in Pittsburgh and Chicago. She continues to lead public art projects,
youth workshops and speaking opportunities as she expands her art network in different cities.
In 2021, Young received recognition for her extraordinary work as an artist, painter and muralist. She was named 2021 Person of the Year in Visual Arts by Pittsburgh City Paper, acknowledged as a finalist for the 2021 Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Award, and selected as the Artist in Residence at Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Pennsylvania from March through September 2022.
The Ohio Arts Council’s ArtNEXT grant and matching funds from Springfield Public Art will fund the next Springfield project, although the location of the mural has yet to be decided.
“Ultimately that will be decided as part of this process with Janel,” says Schutte. “She will take our input under consideration as she works through it. Janel is equally comfortable working on walls and flat spaces, so either may be a possibility.”
The City of Springfield boasts many vibrant murals, including the Rose City Mural, Oracle’s Vision, the Greetings Mural, the Hattie Moseley Mural, and so much more.
In the past, mural projects were matched to a wall or building, then permission was sought from the building owner.
“Moving forward we would love for building owners to offer their walls for potential projects so that we may create a wall inventory of sorts,” says Schutte.
Springfield has some amazing public art worth celebrating, and community members are invited to join the discussion about the present and the future of the public art program. The members of Springfield Public Art will be at the gathering to answer questions and share their vision for the future.
“Public art is a key part of creating a vibrant community,” says Schutte. “It signals a community’s creativity, pride in the arts and sense of place.”

A cluster of mansions on the eastern side of Springfield once home to some of its most prominent residents. Still together along portions of East High are examples of prominent late-19thcentury architectural styles, including the Richardsonian Romanesque, the Renaissance Revival, and the Italianate styles. While other neighborhoods once possessed similar collections of styles in close proximity to each other, East High is distinguished because its mix of styles has survived to the present day, unlike that of many other neighborhoods.
Built in 1993, the awardwinning Clark State Performing Arts Center is situated on 5.5 acres in downtown Springfield, Ohio. The 86,000 square foot facility houses rental space that is designed and equipped to accommodate musical performances, theatre presentations, conferences, business meetings and other activities. This 1500-seat state-of-theart- theater hosts a season of Broadway Tours, music groups, Illusionists, Country Music, and more. SNYDER PARK
Ohio’s oldest trout stream is the Mad River. Stocking of this river began in the late 1800s with the introduction of brook trout. Then in 1884, rainbow trout were introduced to the stream; and in 1931, ODNR switched to stocking brown trout in the stream. Today the stream is stocked annually with 6”-8” brown trout to supplement the population. Fly fishing is good on the Mad River, as there are good hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, and other popular trout foods throughout the spring, summer, and fall months.

Springfield’s fifth annual indie music and craft beer festival — IndieCraft — will feature a dozen bands, a new downtown venue, and two returning stages this year.
The free event takes place May 24-25. A full-size stage at National Road Commons Park, 50 W. Main St., will host the headliners at 8 p.m. each night – Brigitte Calls Me Baby on Friday, and Lydia Loveless on Saturday.
Returning venues include Mother Stewart’s Brewing, 102 W. Columbia St., and the State Theater, 19 S. Fountain Ave.
“To my mind, this is the best and deepest lineup we’ve ever had,” says Chris Schutte, vice president of destination marketing and communications for the Greater Springfield Partnership.
Performers also include Tommy Stinson, Vacation, Mol Sullivan, Joe Waters Band, crabswithoutlegs, Isai Morales and Devin Burgess, Leggy, Soften, K Carter and Mosant. The full schedule can be found on the IndieCraft website, with regular updates on its Facebook page.
The lineup includes punk, blues, indie hip hop and jazz-tinged musicians, Schutte says.
“These are genres and places we have not deeply gotten into,” he says, adding that the festival aims to become more eclectic as it grows. Organizers have previously said their template for the festival is South by Southwest in Austin and the festival has been gaining momentum each year it has taken place since it began (not counting the year off for the pandemic).
The diversity is in part thanks to WYSO, a supporting sponsor with two hosts who acted as co-curators of the lineup, Schutte says. He also credits premier sponsors Link-Hellmuth Insurance and Benjamin Steel for making the festival possible.
The festival also includes food trucks and beer concessions, with downtown’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA) encompassing the venue areas and permitting DORA drinks.
Mother Stewart’s will host the beer festival portion of IndieCraft from the afternoon into the evening of Saturday, May 25, hosting visiting breweries. Attendees can purchase tasting portions in addition to pints.
Schutte expects between 2,000 and 3,000 people to attend the Memorial Day weekend festival. The event has largely been free since its inception – it charged a $10 fee for tickets to the Guided by Voices show in 2022 to control crowds – and Schutte says that “feels right” for an event such as this.
“We want to continue in that vein for as long as we can,” he says.

Leann Castillo was driving past Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve in the middle of July and took a look at the parking lot. Not a spot was available, and only two of the vehicles had Ohio license plates.
Why was it so busy at 2 p.m. on a Thursday? Rock climbing at Mad River Gorge is a popular draw for Clark County, says Castillo, director of the National Trail Parks and Recreation District.
But climbing is just one outdoor adventure that attracts tourists from both inside and outside the state. The area’s hiking, paddling, fishing, biking and other fresh-air activities are ideal for enthusiasts of all skill levels, say local outdoor devotees. Ohio residents often “loosely know” about the outdoor opportunities in the vicinity, says Tom Helbig, owner of Tomfoolery Outdoors.
They know about the bike trails but don’t know there are more than 300 miles of them, he says. They have heard of the Buckeye Trail but don’t know that it circles the state. Or they know about the Mad River but never thought about camping along it.
“I think my business and my personal adventures have opened people’s eyes to those things,” he says.
Tomfoolery Outdoors plans outdoor events and leads guided outdoor experiences for individuals and groups in southwest Ohio and elsewhere. While much of Helbig’s work is in Ohio – his signature event is Canoegrass, a bluegrass festival held near Sidney – his adventures also regularly take him outside the state to places like North Carolina, Virginia and Florida. Helbig lives and travels in his van, following his activities and events.
A recent event was the Pickin Adventurous Series, which combined live music with short hiking, biking and paddling adventures in Clark County on three separate days in August and September. Each event attracted about 30 participants, he
says, and many had not previously been to the park or trail where the adventure was held.
Ecotourism to Helbig means using recreation to draw locals and travelers to spend time outdoors. That can lead not only to improved health and wellness, but it also can lead to success for local businesses, he says.
The region is slowly starting to embrace outdoor recreation as a tool for economic development, he says. When people travel for outdoor activities, they often spend money at other locations within the community, like restaurants and breweries.
“People who recreate in the outdoors tend to have disposable income, and they’re willing to spend it on fun things,” like art, music and food in the place where they are visiting, he says.
For example, Pickin Adventurous activities ended at Mother Stewart’s Brewing Company, where participants supported the brewery and food trucks, Helbig says.
“I try to make that happen with Tomfoolery Outdoors events, where we make those connections for people,” Helbig says.
Springfield and Clark County are home to many nature-based attractions that beckon visitors.
Climbing is just one outdoor activity that attracts adventure-seekers from out-of-state. Castillo’s experience this summer of seeing the full parking lot is a “regular occurrence,” says Carol Kennard, executive director of the Clark County Park District.
Mad River Gorge and Nature Preserve, 2710 Dayton-Springfield Road, is a destination climbing location throughout the Midwest because it has routes of varying difficulty for both beginners and those who are more advanced, Kennard says. Climbers also like the proximity of the parking lot.
It regularly lures climbers from throughout Ohio and surrounding states. Logs show that within the past year, climbers have come from as far away as Illinois, Iowa, Maryland and Missouri, as well as from California and Texas in recent years, she says.
Even as the popularity of climbing at the park has continued to build, visitors also come to birdwatch, see the wildflowers and hike the even terrain.
“It’s really a beautiful nature park, too,” Kennard says.
It is the variety of outdoor activities that makes the community so special for local nature-lovers and tourists, Kennard and Castillo agree.
she says. They are able to relax, to pause for a moment.
“In our day-to-day lives, that’s not always something we can do, or think to do,” Castillo says.
Helbig says that many people don’t realize the adventures that are available within the region. He showcases the diversity of experiences that are available here to help locals realize what they have in their own backyard and to spread the word to people from outside of the state.
“I want to make sure people know what the real Ohio is like versus what they see from the interstate,” Helbig says.
Castillo points to the whitewater access, multiuse trails, and the area’s bouldering, kayaking and canoeing locations as a few of the places that the community is fortunate to offer.
Ecotourism isn’t just adventure sports or a visit to a rainforest, Castillo says, and it isn’t limited to those visiting from far away.
“It can just be a park with some walking paths,” she says.
When people are outdoors in the fresh air enjoying nature, they not only experience new things but also learn more about themselves,
