WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: 8Seconds Shanghai Flaghip LOCATION: Shanghai, China TYPE: Retail YEAR: 2016 COMPANY: Gensler Recognized in the Korean market for its distinctive style that it is said to grab attention in just eight seconds - the philosophy behind the brand’s name. Working closely with the 8Seconds team, Gensler’s designers developed the store’s exterior, interior, and signage design. Targeting the Chinese mass market, 8Seconds opened its Shanghai agship store at a prime downtown location. This store houses the label’s complete range of ultra-hip apparel over two oors. Both oors are organized into two themes: “Casual,” which carries the line’s everyday wear, and “Trendy,” which carries 8Second’s high-end range. Shoppers can also enjoy Korean co- brands’ products and services on both oors of this location. Korean-style cosmetic stations, accessory stores, cartoon merchandise stores, nail salons, and even an ice-cream parlor allow Chinese shoppers to get a taste of authentic Korean lifestyle and fashion. These added services both add a new dimension to the stores and appeal to China’s fast-growing millennial market. The design was based on the concept, “K-groove,” to convey energy and attitude be tting 8Seconds’ brand and apparel. Gensler’s team focused on creating airy, open spaces that allow the clothing to take center stage. Simple, bold signage coupled with whimsical graphics throughout the stores complete the immersive shopping experience.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Portman Ritz-Carlton Lobby Lounge LOCATION: Shanghai, China TYPE: F&B YEAR: 2016 COMPANY: Gensler Massive wooden columns are a perfect regal welcome to the lobby’s foyer. Extravagant chandeliers and lighting xtures highlight every architecture element and décor at its nest, while a super high ceiling completes the scene. With dark wood round tables and polished brass, the lobby’s decor is modern-meets-traditional. At the bar area, the color scheme changes from light creams and taupes to silvery greens and yellows. Above the bar are beautiful lighting pendants, reminiscent of Chinese lanterns. A dramatic curtain wall of light drapes over the window siting area, bringing the space into a whole new realm. Gensler maximized the potential ofan underused outdoor space by making an extension. Complete with lush greenery, the idea was to recreate an urban garden.Floor-toceiling windows ood the indoorswith natural light. A library is de ned by Art Deco-inspired furnishings, vintage mirrors, and a replacethat cast thespace into a rich glow of opulence. The whole area is lled with 1920s Shanghai artifacts, including a Chinese-inspired apothecary cabinet, Oriental screens, and ceramic porcelain ware. By layering pieces from several di erent periods, sources, and uses, Gensler created something that feels entirely new.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Huaxia Bank Center LOCATION: Beijing, China TYPE: Retail Center YEAR: 2016 COMPANY: Gensler Using Connectivity as a central design element, the project creates a new sense of place for a new generation by connecting people through four key points: technology and people, the interplay of indoors and outdoors, global culture and local tradition, and between work and lifestyle. This connection is created by linking three existing standalone o ce towers with a connective retail spine along the south side of the project. By linking the towers with one another you not only o er people more ways to connect with each other but a chance to connect with other aspects of their life outside of the traditional o ce setting. By developing a variety of retail, dining, and service options in a large airy light lled atrium that opens onto a sunken garden the project o ers occupants a chance to gather, come together and connect in new and unique ways that blurs the lines between work and play.

A renovation and rebranding of an existing club DIVA sought to define something new while not completely forget about the past. By utilizing reclaimed solid hard wood and repurposing it in a new and more modern way the concept of the club fell in line with the name “lace. This lace motif realized itself in a laser cut wall panel that was then layered with the reclaimed wood and a state of the art LED panel to create a rich surface texture that looks entirely new yet is from the past. The lighting and visuals were designed by Visual Drugstore and project support was from the firm Devided by Zero

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Waterfront Redevelopment LOCATION: Zadar, Croatia TYPE: Infrastructure // Urbanism YEAR: 2013 Within the context of resilient tourism as a form of coastal rehabilitation, transportation infrastructure as a form of regional planning holds the greatest potential for creating economic resiliency as well as the highest number of external benefits that can lead to regional rehabilitation. In the coastal town of Zadar, Croatia’s second largest infrastructure project is currently underway to create a new super-port in an attempt to stimulate economic development along the southern Dalmatian coast. With the new port currently under construction, the harborside of the historic port surrounding the peninsula becomes an opportunity for speculative development and reimagination. Through the insertion of tactical floating elements along the existing harborside the old city can strategically invigorate its historic center while simultaneously freeing up dry land for new speculative development. With a new floating infrastructure system the city can systematically deploy multiple temporary elements to accommodate seasonal influx in capacity and special events. Building on the country’s rich shipbuilding industry, the project harnesses the country’s direct relationship with the water and transportation as a way of revitalizing the urban core.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Hangzhou Super-Block LOCATION: Hangzhou, China TYPE: Mixed Use // Retail // Office YEAR: 2010 COMPANY: KPF // Labtop The Hangzhou (Baida) Mixed Use Super-block is a large development designed to provide an iconic structure in Hangzhou’s new Central Business District. Containing a mixture of high-end retail, office, hotel, and residential programs, the project is a landmark project for the region. The site is a conglomeration of several large blocks to create a large super-block capable of holding larger programs and amenities. While accommodating these new larger scale programs, the project seeks to stand out from traditional bulky super-block typologies by creating numerous circulation routes through the site and maintaining the urban character of the existing fabric. Through an insertion of “Urban Gateways”- tall vertical voids generated by the strategic “hinging” & “bridging” of programs and massing, the scheme is at once cohesive yet porous and ultimately accessible. The project was done in partnership with the Baida group, Greentown China Ltd., Labtop rendering.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Riverside 66 LOCATION: Tianjin, China TYPE: Retail YEAR: 2010 COMPANY: KPF The Hai He River, which flows through Tianjin into the Pacific Ocean, has long made Beijing’s port city a critical center of trade and commerce in Northern China. Over time, Tianjin has become one of the most active international shipping ports and one of the country’s most important cities. Surrounded by cultural institutions, this urban center will establish a new identity for the city that links its culture to its historic place of commerce. The building’s form engages the site’s disconnected edges and unites them within a single carapace, which generates the project’s presence on the river. Operating as a public plaza as well as a vertical concourse to the building’s upper skystreet, the project’s central atrium divides the internal shell and directly links the Hai He River with He Ping Lu. The shell’s concrete and glass structure curves dramatically upward from the riverside and converges with the opposing south façade, yielding a six-story building to meet the context of the Heping District. One of the longest single structures in China, stretching over 350 meters, the project aims to activate the regenerated riverfront as it rethinks the role of China’s urban market. Winner of the 2010 AIA New York City Design Excellence Award in the Unbuilt Category.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Samuel Residence LOCATION: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia TYPE: Residential YEAR: 2011-2015 COMPANY: ZEROLABOFFICE Phase_I & ATELIER CRITIQUE Phase II Located in the inner suburbs of one of asia’s fastest growing markets Kuala Lumpur, the Samuel residence seeks to redefine tropical luxury. An expansive private estate on a large lot the design of the Samuel Residence was primarily defined by two features. The first was the home’s ability to open up and disappear into the lush gardens and pool surrounding the house. The second requirement was for the house to close back up entirely to secure it from home invaders, prevalent in the area. With an extensive pool that weaved in and out of the home, terraced hanging gardens and a towering central atrium space, the home is a balance between tropical style and modern luxury. Phase_2 of the project saw the delivery of a detailed interiors package as well as project coordination seeking to ensure high quality implementation throughout the construction and fit out of the project. Currently under construction the project is on schedule for a late 2014 completion.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Richgate Residential Tower LOCATION: Taipei, Taiwan TYPE: Residential YEAR: 2014 COMPANY: Gensler The façade design is a result of careful analysis of existing site conditions that allow the retail podium and the tower to relate both contextually to neighboring buildings and from a distance. The building’s internal planning and structure were pre-determined in a previous design. Further coordination and adjustment are required. Upon approach, the retail podium is divided into three floors and two zones for public and private function. The main lobby is directly accessible from Song Jiang rd. The building design is largely a result of carefully proportioned frames that showcase the 2 units along the west façade and the commercial spaces at the podium. The outer framed geometry is intended to read very white in the city skyline and thus a very light color has been selected. The crown of the tower is designed specifically for capturing views of the city in all directions. The frames at the edge of the tower wrap and create a series of tall viewing windows for both the 2-lane 20 meterlappoolareaandgardenterrace. Thepooliselevatedslightlycreatinganinfinityeffect.Stair brings guests down to a lower level that is large enough for a multitude of activities. The two sides are divided by an elevator core but allow for connection in two locations. The garden terrace is made up of a series of small pools, a green wall and various landscaping zones for organic farming. Seating areas have also been carefully considered within the space throughout the day providing beautiful sunset views in the late afternoon.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Huirou Spring Plaza LOCATION: Beijing, China TYPE: Mixed Use // Retail // Office YEAR: 2015 COMPANY: Gensler This mixed-use development spans 200,000 square meters of office, retail, dining, and entertainment spaces in Beijing’s suburban Huairou district. Gensler’s master plan calls for buildings of varying functions and volumes situated on a large central park all of which will make Huairou Spring Plaza a vibrant community center. Walkways wind through the grounds, while courtyards and pockets of green space act as extensions of the park and evoke historic Chinese gardens, for a fusion of Eastern and Western influences. Each of the four towers, including a Grade A office tower and three residential towers, contain roof gardens, offering employees a moment of respite. Other amenities include a supermarket, six levels of restaurants, retail space, and a movie theatre.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Jiading Exhibition Center LOCATION: Jiading, China TYPE: Exhibition // Cultural YEAR: 2011 COMPANY: ZEROLABOFFICE Historically, Jiading a prominent 江 watertown, relying on water for its farming, commerce, and livelihood, is now fast becoming a hub of modern urban and industrial expansion within Shanghai and the 江 region. The new Exhibition center seeks to not only help reflect on the past but become a new urban generator for future development. By inserting a series of floating volumes to define the various programmatic zones throughout the existing space, the project creates a series of focused and intimate spaces that work together to create a continuous whole. The role of the water flowing through the canal is then acted out by visitor as they flow through the open floor plan through the various inserted spatial volumes that reflect the programmatic objectives of the exhibition center. By lifting the programmatic delineation above the users head it creates a free and open plan, similar to an art gallery, allowing the visitor to follow the exhibit program at their own pace, creating a personal experience. Through the reintroduction the concept of water as a form of circulation it creates the vital link between the past, present, and future of Jiading, and plays a crucial role in all aspects of Jiading’s future urban development.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Academy for the 20th Century LOCATION: Rome, Italy TYPE: Exhibition//Academic//Res. YEAR: 2009 Through a complex study of the site, the project leverages several historical and formal layers resulting in a mitigated palimpsest. The major morphological generator for the project was referencing historical building types of Rome as well as designing a building that was inherently affected by the historical Aqua Claudia that ran through the site. The project included housing for scholars, meeting rooms, teaching spaces, work studios, exhibition halls, a library, and a museum. The unique program of the project then differentiated the projects consequential parts resulting in a complex urban center that is simultaneously of the city as well as a new insertion into the urban fabric affected by time.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Boat House LOCATION: Boston, MA TYPE: Sports YEAR: 2008 Our second major design project of Studio I to design an archetypal structure particular to Boston, the boat house. Our site was located on Fort Point Channel the in the heart of the South End redevelopment zone. Located within a block of the financial, cultural, and tourism centers of Boston, the project was designed as icon for the new development in the area. Formally a competitive rower myself gave me an intimate understanding of the program and the functions of the building that went beyond the requirements. The formal generator for the project began with my initial shift to rotate the boats and bays 45 degrees in order to facilitate easy launching and storage of the boats. A unique concept derived out of the particular boat traffic patterns in the channel and a keen understanding of the procedure of boat storage. The second formal construct was to invoke the forms of the boats in the interior by undulating the form in a way that created a distinct rhythm similar the rowing stroke. The resultant building was the product of numerous morphological manipulation and programmatic organization.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Primary School LOCATION: Boston, MA TYPE: Academic YEAR: 2009 The terminal project of our second comprehensive design studio was to design a primary school located in the South End of Boston, MA. Before designing the school we produced a thorough analytical urban analysis which served as the primary morphological and conceptual generator for the project. The site strategically located at a collision between two conflicting urban fabrics represented the transformative nature of the neighborhood as well as the current trends in urban redevelopment and expansion. The building itself was thus forced to mitigate these two formerly separate neighborhoods into a cohesive whole through a series of formal and abstract operations. Through an exhaustive iteration of study models and formal analysis, the morphology of the building gained a latent tracery of the surrounding neighborhoods while performing the operative task of an urban elementary school.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: South Boston PAC LOCATION: Boston, MA TYPE: Performance // Civic YEAR: 2013 COMPANY: Atelier Critique Located in the heart of the innovation district, the South Boston Performing Arts Center Expansion looks to offer a new cultural hub in Boston’s new commercial center. Its complex morphology based largely on the constraints of the city’s extensive zoning and setbacks to preserve view corridors, seeks to capture the dynamism of the area and represent the spirit of innovation into a lasting effigy long after the extensive funding fueling the areas rapid development has ended, In an effort to contribute more civic and cultural development in an area fueled mostly out of financial speculation. This state of the art facility would enable Boston’s thriving theatrical and performance culture a new venue to continue illuminating the city.

WORK SAMPLES PROJECT: Urban Incubator LOCATION: Worcester,MA TYPE: Civic // Academic YEAR: 2010 As the city of Worcester begins to rethink and re-examine its urban core in an effort to fix the damage of extensive urban renewal in the 1960’s, the Urban Incubator seeks to strategically bring together several distinct groups in one place to re-envision the city and kick start its efforts towards prosperity. Through an extensive urban analysis of downtown Worcester, a new masterplan was developed to try reconnect the city with itself. A special site was selected right at the heart of the newly zoned innovation district to serve a starting point for the development. The program of the UI incorporated civic, academic, institutional, and exhibition spaces to develop a new urban hub to attract the creative class. The morphology of the project affected by the tension between the new and old city plans as the facade bends and curves as a mitigative strategy to reconnect these two forces resulting in a dynamic exterior.
