Thank you for making the decision to partner with The UGTM book series. Without people like yourselves we would not be the success that we have become. Best wishes

Our titles are on recommended reading lists across the world, and are being used by medical schools, to set exams. We have won awards from high profile organisations such as the British Medical Association (BMA), The Royal College of Radiologists (RCR), The Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME), the British Institute of Radiologists (BIR), and The Medical Women’s Federation (MWF). What’s more, we have published data supporting our unique, award winning model for education. This model not only benefits our readers, but also the professional development of the authors we mentor in the process of book development. For more information, visit www.unofficialguidetomedicine.com. By joining our network of dedicated, hard-working medical students, you are helping to bypass big corporate agencies and minimise the cost of essential educational materials, whilst also helping us to raise money for charity: over £8,500 has been donated to the various causes our student bodies care about. We donated £1,500 earlier this year to Kagando Hospital in Uganda. This bought them a much needed incubator in their neonatal unit, which has been in use ever since. Plus, through selling books at a small profit, medical student societies are raising thousands of pounds themselves each year to put towards the good work they do.

Philosophy and Publishing Model. The Unofficial Guide to Medicine: In most medical textbooks, there is a clear distinction between author and reader. Authors are typically senior clinicians who impart their wisdom, with little if any input from junior doctors (“juniors”) or medical students. Whilst readers are those in their early stages of training. Reader feedback is almost exclusively gathered post publication and there is usually a long interval before the next edition is published where this feedback is may be utilised.

However, we see the value of the insight of students and junior doctors. Students sign up to medical school wanting to help people, and all of sudden find it will be five years before they can practice medicine. Their altruism, intellect, and hardwork deserves an outlet. Juniors have shown to be effective educators in a variety of settings.1,2 A 2011 systematic review of 19 studies assessing medical students-asteachers found that peer teaching in undergraduate medicine was comparable to that of conventional teaching methods.3 Interestingly, junior-led teaching may explain difficult concepts in more user friendly language, and may also emphasise more relevant material to both being a junior doctor, and passing exams.4 As such, juniors are an untapped resource in the textbook writing process. We at the UGTM employ a novel award winning student and junior-led approach to textbook writing. Our publishing model allows for them to be involved in every step of the development process from conceptualisation, content creation, editing, graphic design and approving the final draft prior to publication (Figure 1), leading to benefits from both the reader and the authors perspective (Table 1, Figure 2).

Page 4

We utilise social media to obtain real-time feedback of our textbooks. For example, we made the contents list of “The Unofficial Guide to Radiology” available to our 27,500 members on our Facebook page.5 Within the first day, students from all over the world were responding with feedback. This input from a large cohort group allows our readers to influence and engage with the development of every textbook we publish. Our readers suggested an additional five chapters and an additional 28 X-rays which were subsequently written before the textbook went to press.6 By responding to the specific needs of our readers, it is hardly surprising that the book was such a success, winning recognition from the BMA, the BIR, and the RCR. We found out what students wanted, and then we implemented it. Our ethos is to continually improve the contents of each textbook, until we know that they reflect the current needs of students. Readers have emphasised the ease of use, relevance of content and the value of a multi-author collaborative approach in our books. We hope to work with you to expand our philosophy of not only recognising the value of medical students and junior doctors, but also translating this into award winning textbooks for the benefit of all.

Figure 2. Professional development of authors, showing self-reporting rating across various domains before and after getting involving in our textbook writing process. “I first found out about UGTM through one of the paediatric registrars at my hospital, who had been involved in the books in my third year. I then got involved because the books were being sold with proceeds going to charity and I wanted to help the project out as it sounded like an amazing idea with benefits for everyone. I started selling the books with a discount to my friends and colleagues and it was really popular. Zeshan then asked me to review the book, which I did, and before I knew it I was reviewing more of the books that were in development. One of my suggestions lead to the mark scheme books having questions and answers at the end of each station, which I helped draft some of and then I was offered an editorial role. I am now in the process of developing the Unofficial Guide to Obstetrics and Gynaecology as a co-editor with a registrar as an FY2 doctor in North West London. And it all started with wanting to help someone out for charity!”

“I first found out about UGTM through a friend in 2013, who recommended the series for OSCE revision. I was particularly intrigued by how medical students were contributing to the design and writing of the book, so inquired about getting involved. At the beginning, I simply reviewed pieces of work written by other authors and provided feedback. I then started writing my own chapters, and eventually became an editor for "The Unofficial Guide to Medical Research, Audit, and Teaching" book. I am now working as an editor for "The Unofficial Guide to Medicine", a textbook on core medicine topics.” Tiffany Tang, then medical student, and author of BMA Award Winning “Unofficial Guide to Medical Research, Audit and Teaching”.

Katherine Lattey, then medical student, now editing “Unofficial Guide to Obstetrics and Gynaecology”, due for release in 2017.

"I first got involved in the Unofficial Guide to Medicine after using the OSCE book to get through my med school exams. My friend Katrina had been involved in producing it, so I approached Zeshan about getting more involved when I was still a medical student. Very quickly I went from reviewing material to authoring material to editing my own textbook. It was an amazing feeling to have my name in print as a newly qualified doctor! I have now written chapters for books in the series and I'm now working on editing my second textbook. Having being mentored as a medical student, I look forward to helping others develop as authors in the same way I was helped.” Emily Hotton, then medical student, and author of “The Unofficial Guide to Practical Skills”

OSCE examinations are used worldwide as a critical part of medical student assessment. They are one of the most stressful aspects of a medical course due to often insufficient preparation provided by medical schools. “The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs” is intended to fill this gap. Since its launch, “The Unofficial guide to Passing OSCEs” has consistently been a best seller on www.amazon.co.uk. Now in its third edition, the book includes over 100 case scenarios brought to life with over 300 full colour clinical photographs. Each case provides valuable insight and ‘hands-on’ tips on how to approach common OSCE scenarios, including how best to ‘present your findings’ to the examiners, and covers common questions that you might be asked. The book covers history taking, examination, communication skills, practical skills in many specialities (including orthopaedics, paediatrics, psychiatry, radiology, prescribing, obstetrics and gynaecology). “The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs” is suitable for medical students starting from year 1, physician’s associates and nurse practitioners.

“The chapters are clearly written, in simple language that should appeal to students and reflect the fact that the authors themselves have recently been OSCE candidates”. Simon Maxwell, Professor of Student Learning. “A well-presented learning and revision guide for medical students. Well over 70 people have been involved in the creation of this informative guide…The guide’s method of creation allows it to be used in multiple ways by readers…The book quite rightly contains all the essentials that you would typically expect of a book in this format including but not limited to illustrations, photographs, radiology images and graphs.” International Journal of Clinical Skills “This book has massively helped me in structuring my revision and ensuring that I cover all pertinent areas in good detail. It gives you great little tips and teaching notes and with all the new pictures added you can see why so many students were queuing to get their hands on this invaluable resource” Chudy Uzoho, Final Year Medical Student, University of Southampton.

This title is the sister book to our most popular publication: “The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs”. This book is designed to give you practise by role playing a real life OSCE. Each of the 92 stations contains: A. A briefing for the student, as you would get at the start of an OSCE. B. A briefing for an actor playing the patient, so that they can fully get into their role. C. A mark scheme for the examiner, along with follow up questions to ask, so that you can be assessed in exam conditions The structure of this book is designed to match the stations in “The Unofficial Guide to Passing OSCEs” and is suitable for medical students from year 1, physician’s associates and nurse practitioners.

“This book can be used early in the revision process to identify key areas one needs to focus revision on and periodically to check progress through regular mock OSCEs. It provides candidates with practical tips which other books may overlook, for both revision and the exam itself thus confirming the writers' proficiency as authors of an OSCE revision guide. It is reassuring to the reader and congruent with the aim of making students confident candidates to pass OSCEs.” International Journal of Clinical Skills “This book was very clear and concise. The ‘OSCE strategy’ section was particularly insightful and gave some direction as to the best way to revise, not only what to revise. The large clear images were a superb tool for visual learning and the mark schemes that shortly followed were again very useful tools for adequate preparation. Each image was considered individually and in a systematic way. This meant that accumulating knowledge about signs and symptoms was a lot easier than if they had been spread throughout the chapter. I especially liked the ‘additional questions to consider’ section at the end of the sections, which were very short concise knowledge tests. I found these to be very useful for reviewing knowledge. The sections covered a great deal of content and provided an excellent review of a vast array of OSCE stations. I would highly recommend this book to any medical student preparing for an OSCE.” Shahab Shahid, Final Year Medical Students, Kings College London, UK “This is a brilliant book which addresses the main barrier to performing well at an OSCE station. Carrying out required tasks under the watchful eye of an examiner is quite daunting. Most students are anxious about what is expected of them and this book answers those unspoken questions with detailed mark schemes and feedback. The key to OSCEs is practice and this is a fantastic tool to aid you in that and mimic the exam scenario as closely as possible. As a medical student I’ve had OSCE stations where I read the briefing and forgot or still wasn’t sure what to do once I started the station. Practicing with the briefings given and reading the examiners briefing helps build up confidence. This is an excellent companion book to the ‘Unofficial Guide to OSCEs book’ and should be read by anyone who wants to feel at ease and perform their best as OSCEs” Onyinye Akpenyi, Second Year Medical Student, Second Year Medical Student, Barts and the London, School of Medicine.

Radiology teaching at medical school is limited and yet it is a discipline that almost all doctors have involvement with on a regular basis. “The Unofficial Guide to Radiology” has been added to the Royal College of Radiologists’ recommended reading list for undergraduates and has won a prize from the British Institute of Radiology for being one of the best undergraduate learning resources currently available. Since its launch, the “The Unofficial Guide to Radiology” has consistently been one of the bestselling medical textbooks on www.amazon.co.uk. This book teaches systematic analysis of the three main types of X-ray images: chest, abdominal and orthopaedic through the use of large and clearly-annotated images. Additional chapters cover the other common types of radiological investigations, including ultrasound, CT, nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy, and MRI. The layout of the book is designed to make the book as relevant as possible; the X-rays are presented in the context of a real life scenario. The reader is asked to interpret the X-ray before turning over the page to reveal a model report accompanied by a fully annoted version of the X-ray, The contents of the “Unofficial Guide to Radiology” is in line with the Royal College of Radiologists’ Undergraduate Radiology Curriculum. It is also a valuable resource for medical students, junior doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician associates, radiographers and radiology trainees.

“When a medical student or junior doctor asks me how can I learn radiology from one book, I now have the answer. I am very pleased to recommend this inexpensive book to a wide range of medical and paramedical professionals.” Professor David Wilson, President of the British Institute of Radiology. “Which radiographs from each system are most likely to be presented in exams? This excellent book presents the classics, and at one level this makes it a high-yield textbook that will be extremely valuable to medical students and junior doctors. What is especially striking is the definition and clarity of the illustrations, with on-image labelling enabling one to be absolutely certain of which is the endotracheal tube, the nasogastric tube and the central line, for example.” Bob Clarke, Associate Dean, Professional Development, London. Director, Ask Doctor Clarke Ltd. “I have not come across a text that is as comprehensive a guide to radiology and radiology services for medical students and junior doctors as this... Other books such as the Lecture Notes of Radiology and Crash course: imaging that are also aimed at providing medical students with an overview of various imaging modalities and how to assess for common pathology do not have the same breadth or readability as this text. Working through this book a student would undoubtedly feel more confident and prepared in presenting imaging findings on a ward round and the authors are to be congratulated on their efforts” BMA Medical Book Awards

Description This is a step-by-step illustrated guide that covers over 50 core practical skills, with 200+ high quality images of procedures being performed. The interactive format of the book allows for solo or group revision with detailed methods, mark schemes, facts and common Q&As providing a clear, broad and detailed outline of each skill. This book is designed to guide you through learning with the following sections: basic patient assessments, general skills, blood tests, acute patient management, medication administration, medicine and surgery, urology and paediatrics. “The Unofficial Guide to Practical Skills” is suitable from Year 1 to postgraduation: medical students, nursing students, midwifery students, physician’s associates and nurse practitioners.

Reviews “It will no doubt become ingrained in the resource portfolio of clinical skills students” International Journal of Clinical Skills “This book came recommended to me by several older medical students who all said they found it incredibly useful throughout their medical training. As a first year medical student I found this book somewhat overwhelming initially, and would recommend it was targeted for those reaching the end of training as a supplement to Finals and various other clinical examinations. However, despite this, the examinations that were relevant to my level of knowledge were explained very clearly with an easy to follow guide and were of much benefit to me. The textbook is exceptionally well organised and an enjoyable read” Emily Crawley, 1st Year Medical Student, University of Leicester. “The once daunting prospect of approaching practical skills can now be overcome by using this refreshingly comprehensive and user-friendly guide. Including both skills focused on by the GMC and an array of additional skills essential in the armoury of a junior doctor, this book really is a must have.” Robert Miller, Final Year Medical Student, University of Bristol

3) Effective advertisement in conjunction with timing and location is key to high sales. It is vital to advertise a few weeks in advance of a big event, letting people know about the great quality discounted books that will be available to purchase. Consider advertising via social media, lecture shout outs and using mailing lists. Choose to pitch your stall in a location with high foot traffic so you will have maximum exposure to your target market. During times where there is high traffic, try to have as many people working on the stall as possible as if customers have to queue they may just leave. During these times, also be sure to have the stall wellstocked. Consider selling at the start of placement blocks and close to exam time. Provide an email address where people can request to buy a book at any point across the year. 4) Samples books! When people visit your stall, be sure to have sample copies on the stall for people to browse through. This is the best way to show people how well thought out the books are and how well they work for students.

Society Experiences “Medball is the biggest event in the Birmingham Medsoc calendar each year. The committee who organises the ball has been in partnership with the Unofficial Guide to Medicine for the last few years, using the sales of the discounted books to raise some funds for our student led ball. Not only are the discounted books used widely to help many with their work, but the money we raise helps us to put on an event which celebrates all of which our medical school has to offer.” C

Steph Wallis, Medball representative, Birmingham Medsoc 15/16

"We have worked closely with the UGTM since 2015. They came down to visit us, and we had lots of interest from our students. The partnership has gone really well, and we hope it continues for many years to come" Ellie Walder, Cambridge University Medsoc, Treasurer and Sponsorship Officer, 15/16

“Try to set up stalls outside lectures during exam periods, especially OSCEs! This allows people to conveniently buy the books as well as providing the added bonus of individuals immediately receiving the book! Try and set up a portion on your website to sell UGT Medicine books to allow people to purchase swiftly and easily. This really helped BSMS MedSoc to promote our sales on Facebook and via email! “ James Willans, Brighton and Sussex Medical Society, Vice President 15/16

“As sponsorship officer of the Adelaide Medical Student Society (AMSS), I’ve had the pleasure to work with Zeshan and The Unofficial Guide To Medicine (UGTM) this year. The highlight of our working relationship was when Zeshan was travelling around Australia and came to visit; it was so great to put a face to the emails! Working with UGTM has been an amazing experience to broaden my exposure to medical education especially outside of the clinically setting. I look forward to working with Zeshan and UGTM and cannot wait to see what’s in store.” Jarrad Hopkins, Sponsorship Officier, Adelaide Medical Student Society, 15/16

We got in touch with Zeshan and he was really happy to start a partnership with Cardiff Medosc. We have been sponsored by UGTM this year and have thoroughly enjoyed the benefits. Getting discounted books is always a bonus for students and the team are very approachable, easy going, and enthusiastic to support new projects. We look forward to keeping it up in the future! “I have been part of Med Soc at Southampton for 4 years and spent the last year as President. Throughout, Zeshan and his team have been brilliant to work with. Their books are a familiar sight in our Med Soc office and students are constantly popping in to pick up the latest editions as we are able to sell them on cheaper than any website giving our students the best deal! The ordering process is simple and the team are easy to get hold of if there is ever a concern. Over the last two years UGTM have sponsored our Toga Party along with many other events - giving us more money to put in to the events while we happily publicise their brilliant books. We're really proud that Zeshan is a graduate of Southampton medical school and countless students have him and his team to thank for passing our OSCEs!” Iona Maxwell, President, Southampton University Med Soc, 2015-

"UGTM kindly gave our society invaluable sponsorship which contributed to us providing our skills workshops, careers events and revision evenings at no cost to our members. In addition, our partnership has allowed us to pass on fantastic savings on the extremely popular book series to our fellow medical students. The whole team at UGTM are great to work with, very friendly and professional, and are available to provide support where they can to their partner student societies. We have sold 130 books, and as well as saving students nearly £2000 on books, we are also projected to raise over £1000 for our society. Thanks!” Jack Kennedy, President, Queen’s University Belfast Scrubs, 2015-16

“We really enjoyed working with UGTM. Zeshan and his team are super friendly and work hard to accommodate you and your medical society, They are great communicators and we look forward to continuing to work with them!” Elaine Cheng , Western Sydney Medical Society Sponsorship Officer, 2015-6.

"Zeshan and the Unofficial Guide to Medicine have been a great support to WAMSS and a pleasure to work with. Zeshan is truly passionate about medicine, paediatrics and global health and it was a privilege to host him in Perth for WAMSS' Global Health Short Course this year." Julian Chung, Vice President, Western Australian, Medical Students’ Society.

“Working with The Unofficial Guide to Medicine during my time as chairperson of Biosoc was an absolute pleasure. The relationship provided much more than just sponsorship to the society. From advice on organising events, freebies for our members and tips on how to navigate Med school, Zeshan was always more than happy to help us out. Their kind sponsorship of our society's trip to Amsterdam ensured fantastic value for members. The Unofficial Guide to Medicine was a massive help to me running our society last year, and their books will be equally as helpful for my finals this year” Bearach Reynolds, Chairman, Biological Association (Medsoc), Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

“The Belfast Medical Students Association has had the pleasure of liaising with an Unofficial Guide to Medicine for a year now. Through their kind sponsorship of our society, we have been the first to know of exciting upcoming promotions, on some of the great and affordable books and materials offered by ‘an Unofficial Guide.’ These products cater to all stages of medicine and so there is something for all year groups. The team have been highly supportive by maintaining flexibility and offering advice and aiding our promotional material. In addition to academic events they took a refreshing interest in other fundraisers and events on campus. They have been a delight to work with over the course of the year and we hope that this has paved the way for a long term sustainable partnership in the future” Mairead Savage, Medical Students Association, Northern Ireland, Queen’s University Belfast.
