So the Word became human and made his home among us. —JOHN 1:14 (NLT)

hen Moses stood on the mountain
overlooking the Promised Land—knowing he would never enter it himself—was he looking for Jesus?

“God with us” (Isaiah 7:14). This child is how God intended to do what He had been promising for so long.

Of course not. But he was looking for the fulfillment of a longawaited promise: that God’s people would have a home in which to dwell—where God would be with them, protect them, and provide for them. Yet given their tendency to wander and

Jesus was not what the Jews expected. He did not come in power or might, but in humility. God had been saying since the days of Moses that the people didn’t need a new political or military leader, they needed Emmanuel, the presence of God with them.

knowing the land was already inhabited, Moses was left wrestling with the question, “How is God going to do what He promised to do?”

When Moses looked at the Promised Land, dreaming of a day when people could dwell with God without hindrance, he was looking for Jesus.

Hundreds of years later, another Jewish leader, Isaiah, had visions of a future where God would be with His people, providing hope and healing. Just like Moses, Isaiah saw the brokenness and selfdestruction of the Jewish people and wrestled with the question, “How is God going to do what He promised to do?”

When Isaiah foretold a future when God’s people would stop striving for control and simply let God lead them, he was looking for Jesus.

Still hundreds of years after that, the Jews lived in quiet desperation under the heel of Rome. They were technically living in the Promised Land, but with a series of exiles and political upheavals, they had a hard time believing that God was still with them. They wondered, “How is God going to do what He promised to do?” Into this history a Jewish baby was born in Bethlehem, fulfilling a promise told by Isaiah—that the child would be Emmanuel, or

When the Jews were wondering how God would deliver them from the oppression of the Roman empire, they were looking for Jesus. They just didn’t know it. This Advent season, may we experience what the Gospel of John tells us—that in His birth, Jesus has moved into the neighborhood (John 1:14, The Message). He is what Moses was looking for, He is what Isaiah foretold, He is “God with us.”

THE REALITY OF HOUSING IN MINNESOTA: •M ore than 1 in 4 Minnesota households pay more than they can afford for housing, spending more than 30% of their income • Median rent has risen 9% since 2000, while median renter income has fallen 11% •A verage price for a 2-bedroom apartment in the metro area: $1,086 • Base income to afford a 2-bedroom: $43,440 • Minimum-wage worker in the Twin Cities will need to work 88 hours per week to pay rent for a

2-bedroom apartment Urban Homeworks is shifting their focus from single-family housing to creating affordable rental units to help combat the housing crisis occurring in the Twin Cities and across the nation. Your gift will empower UHW to purchase and renovate apartments that give safe, stable housing to those in need. Because when people have stable housing, it fosters hope—and they become change agents for their families, their communities, and their city.

NEW! CRISIS RELIEF FUND CPC is beginning a new initiative to allow our church to respond immediately to unexpected crises within our state, nation, and world. This fall we witnessed a series of catastrophic events: hurricanes, fires, refugee crises. And many in our congregation asked the question of how to give in meaningful and effective ways. We want to take the generosity of this congregation to fuel a fund that will respond to needs in the name of Jesus. So whether it is $10,000 for a huge local fire or a $50,000 donation toward an international event—we want to be ready to help like the Good Samaritan.

M

y tendency is to be a person who wants to be positive and see God’s movement in my life. But for years there was a struggle in my marriage, and I went through a long period of praying and waiting on God . . . and not getting the answer I asked for. I was pretty determined that my marriage wasn’t going to fall apart— for my kids, especially. My prayer at that time was essentially telling God what I thought I needed. This time of waiting wasn’t passive, though; we worked so hard to salvage things and find healing. I had the mentality that if we could just pull ourselves up by the bootstraps, things would get better . . . but then things would start falling apart again. Eventually my prayer changed to asking God to align my will with His will. Never in a million years did I think God’s will would be for my marriage to end, but when I came to that point of knowing there was not going to be healing, I felt such an incredible sense of peace. It was so not of me, because who feels peace knowing their marriage is over? But I did. Now my time of waiting is living in the “Now what?” I’m trying not to rush ahead and am choosing to trust Him, though I don’t have any idea where He’s going to lead. I tend to see the glass half-full, but there is a measure of disappointment with God, of questioning, “Why am I having to begin life anew? This isn’t what I signed up for.” But I’m trying to live in the AND: I can have joy knowing God has a good future and something new for me AND I can be disappointed with God and say “I don’t understand why this is what I got.” I’ve been so blessed with such amazing, loving people in my life, walking with me, affirming that God is present in my story. But there is risk in people not understanding why this would be the end result. There are people who don’t know me, but knowing this about me, may judge my faith. That’s hard, but I can’t control that. I have to rest in what I know God says about me and not what others might think. God has worked in every little bit of my life. He’s brought me closer to Him and helped me understand who I am as His creation. When things are stripped away, it brings you more to who you really are. I’m not a wife anymore, so who am I? I’ve had to rely on my identity in Christ. A friend shared the idea of the lamp from Psalm 119: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” I’m using that as an actual image in my mind’s eye: the Lord’s going to bring me to that next step. Another amazing scripture that’s been encouraging me in this season is Jeremiah 6:16: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” I feel like my life is at a crossroads: I’ve been looking, asking questions, and am now stepping out in faith.

W H AT DO YOU LOV E A BOUT PRESCHOOLERS? Everything. Literally. I love their joy, I love their passion, I love their willingness to be open. Preschoolers are just starting their faith journey, and it’s our hope that they will jump on the path with Jesus, listen to Him, pray, and find out where He wants them to go. Our goal is to build faith in them—and have that faith rooted within this community.

TELL US A BOUT THE JOURNE Y TH AT BROUGHT YOU TO CPC. When my kids were small, I was a huge volunteer at my church, helping with VBS and teaching Sunday school every year. As they entered elementary school, we thought it would be a good time to move to a neighborhood church, but unfortunately, there weren’t other kids from their school or the neighborhood attending. When they reached junior high, I really wanted my girls to connect with a small group. Five families on our street attended CPC, along with some really good friends from our old church, so we decided to try Wednesday night programming. The kids brought us, and we jumped all-in! My husband and I got involved with the S.A.L.T. Sunday Community, became members, and then deacons. But I realized I really missed being with little ones—so when there was an opening on the Kids’ team in early childhood, I was excited to apply!

W E TA LK A LOT A BOUT BUILDING A “FA ITH TH AT S TICKS ” IN OUR K IDS. HOW DOES VOLUNTEERING FIT INTO TH AT PROCES S? A volunteer isn’t just a task-oriented doer, but someone who is listening and going where God is leading them. Though my girls have very service-minded hearts, they may not always choose to come volunteer with me—and that's okay! They may have different passions, and it's important for them to listen to those callings. I tell them, “When your heart is open to Jesus, He’ll put you where your heart is.” What might happen if people of different generations, in different places, on different journeys prayed about where God might use them here at CPC? I think our tendency is to stay in our comfort zones, with the same people and activities. But as people listen and follow God’s leading, I think we would see people creating new paths toward different groups, different avenues—and it would create an intergenerational renewal within this church.
