W

e’re starting off this fall thinking about home. Home is a word loaded with an array of images and emotions—whether it’s the thought of a childhood home or lake home or nursing home; coming home or leaving home; inviting people into our home or finding our way back home. What comes to your mind? Laura and I joke that we’re so different because our homes were so different. She was raised in a loving Leave it to Beaver home, and I was trying to escape The Simpsons!

Home is a word loaded with an array of images and emotions . . . what comes to your mind? I have often felt far from home. Even after I began to follow Jesus, I remember never feeling “at home” in churches. Then one day I slipped in early and anonymously into the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church of Boulder. There was a cellist playing Bach, and it was dimly lit and quiet. The pastor got up and made me feel welcome and talked about a Jesus “filled with grace and truth,” who wanted to live with us. And I felt . . . at home. That’s what we want for you to experience here at CPC! But it doesn’t stop there. We want you to continue to share the warmth of home with others—whether in your kitchen or in the church’s new Commons. Join us this September in worship as together we explore what it means to live BOLD—so you can extend an invitation to others who don’t know what they’re missing!

W

hen I was little, church was a really fun way for me to spend my Wednesdays. I started coming to CPC when I was ten, and I was in the musicals and participated in Elevate, Commitment Class, and all the Student Ministries programs. I’ve gotten to wear a lot of different hats in this community—be a leader, be led. Use the gifts God has given me. Sing on Sundays. When you’re trying to figure out who you want to be and you’re not a “real” adult yet, it means a lot to be trusted like I have been here. No one thinks that I’m too young or not capable. I’m supported and loved for being me. It feels like home. Going to school out of state has been really hard for me. UW-Madison is probably one of the most secular places you can be. It’s huge. It’s hard to feel like you belong. I wish I could be at CPC every Sunday and leading high schoolers and middle schoolers on Wednesdays! Because I have this church home where I fit so well, when I got to school I didn’t know what to do or where to go to find that. I didn’t lose my faith, although my freshman year of college was really tough because I didn’t find a strong Christian community. But I had a great experience interning at CPC during that first summer and went back to campus really on-fire and ready to find the community I needed.

Jesus meets us where we're at. We don't have to be this perfect Christian, know the Bible back to front, have everything figured out. There aren't boxes you have to check off in order to follow Jesus. Some girls from my sorority invited me to Greek IV (InterVarsity), and instantly I was like, “Wow, I found my people.” Being a Christian in Greek life is not an easy thing. Our group is small, and though I know there are girls from my sorority who love Jesus, their faith isn’t a priority for them. But the Greek IV community has emphasized the real issues I’m facing as a college student. It’s been a big realization for me that your faith won't grow without effort. Being in Greek life has a lot of benefits, but it also has challenges for a Christian trying to follow Jesus. I get made fun of a lot for my decisions and the way that I carry myself. I’m just seen as this good little Christian because I choose not to do certain things. But I’m not condemning anybody—I know I’m broken, I make mistakes. But that’s not how I’m seen, especially by girls who are not of the Christian faith or who have let go of their faith during college. I do try to be a light and speak truth into people by the way that I live. For some reason that bothers people, but I’m just trying to be the woman God created me to be. Despite those challenges, I’ve seen that one invitation to a weekly life-giving gathering can make a huge difference for someone. They don’t know what they need, but once they find it, they don’t know what they would have done without it. This year, I’m on the Greek IV leadership team, and I get to help plan the large gatherings. I want to bring to Greek IV some of what I’ve experienced here at CPC. Student Ministries really drives home that Jesus meets us where we’re at. We don’t have to be this perfect Christian, know the Bible back to front, have everything figured out. There aren’t boxes you have to check off in order to follow Jesus. That’s something that a lot of college students need to hear. They need to know that God loves them through their mess, that they don’t have to have it all together to love the Lord and love the people that He loves and stand for the things He stands for. We can sit together in community and work through the mess. At CPC, I didn’t really dip my toes in, I dove right in. I got involved and stayed involved, even when it was hard sometimes. I continue to feel this place is my home because being around people that you know love Jesus just as much as you do is life-giving. God did not design us to go through things alone. The number one thing that can change your trajectory as a Christian is having the courage to be yourself and be real with people. Having a community and a place feel like home is huge, because even though we are all uniquely created, we are also in this together.

TELL US A LIT TLE BIT A BOUT YOUR FA ITH JOURNE Y. I grew up in a family that definitely believed in God, but I felt we went to church mostly because my mom was the church organist. Church was our second home, but we actually knew the hymnals better than we knew the Bible. I thought about Jesus, but I didn't know I should seek a relationship with Him. I went through my early adulthood drifting a little bit. Then when we had our first child, like many people, we went back to church. We got very plugged in, but our faith was mostly service-based and still lacked a personal relationship with Christ. A turning point for me was when I started BSF and my first study was on Romans. I just felt so convicted and I began the journey of turning my life toward Jesus. That was about the same time we came to CPC, and we found such rich teaching here. I'm so grateful that Jesus is the center of my life.

HOW DO YOU FEEL GOD H A S EN A BLED YOU TO USE YOUR PA S SIONS A ND GIF TS? In my career in the financial services industry, I strategically and collaboratively led both divisions and companies. This enabled me to live out my passion to help other people develop their own God-given skills and talents. In 2006 I was lucky enough to change careers and find a new place to lead—TreeHouse. It was a blessing to use the skills I had honed over the years to lead, develop, and empower my staff to live out their passions. As I was leaving TreeHouse in 2016, I really felt God prompting me to work with other nonprofits to help them develop their strategy and the funds they need to do their mission, so I’ve been consulting. I’m also using my gifts to coach and mentor young women.

God has blessed this church mightily over the last sixty years with incredible resources, including two strong, faithful senior pastors, amazing lay leaders, and a congregation committed to serving Jesus locally and all over the world. T R A N S I T I O N U P D A T E

I

n July, John Crosby announced his plans to retire on January 15, 2019 after nearly thirty years of service and leadership as Senior Pastor. We are deeply grateful for the countless ways John and Laura have impacted our lives and made a difference both inside and outside the walls of CPC. We recognize God’s goodness and faithfulness and are excited to see what God has planned for the future of CPC!

Following a year of discernment, research, and prayer, a succession plan was approved by our Session in January 2018. As established in that plan, CPC will select an interim executive leader who will be in place for a period of 12-24 months before a new senior pastor is chosen. To learn more about this process, you can read letters from John and our elders, and find more information at cpconline.org/transition.

W H E R E W E ’ R E AT:

The first step outlined by the succession plan was to form a Lead Transition Team, and Becky Walker (current elder) was chosen by Session as chair. As recommended by the plan, Becky has organized the following seven sub-committees that will guide CPC through this transition period: Interim Search Team • Dennis Hykes and Leslie Turner, co-chairs

Oversees the hiring of an interim pastor. The goal is to have this person in place shortly after John’s departure. The search for the next senior pastor will not begin until after the interim pastor is in place and will be led by a committee elected by the congregation.

Prayer Team Kitty Yancey, chair

Encourages and engages our congregation to cover the process with prayer.

Finance Team Cooper Butler and Leif Syverson, co-chairs

Staff Care Team Barb Harmon and Steve Mader, co-chairs

Farewell/Celebration Team Becky Danielson, chair

Assimilation Team Kim Thompson and Mark Thompson, co-chairs

Handles budget and resourcing.

Communication Team Gary Tygesson and Alyssa Warren, co-chairs Ensures open and consistent communication with our congregation.

Plans an honoring farewell celebration.

• In the fall, a gathering will be held for our transition teams to give an update, address questions, gather input, and pray together with the congregation

F A T H E R ,

As we seek You during this season of transition, we are encouraged and reminded of Your great faithfulness to CPC over the past sixty years. We trust Your strong hand to guide our leaders, and we give thanks for a flourishing church body whose mission is unwavering. Provide through the power of Your Holy Spirit wisdom, grace, unity, and abounding peace for the Crosbys, our staff, and entire community. Create in our hearts a fresh desire to love well, pray daily, and grow in our faith during this process. Guide us as we find a new Senior Pastor who embraces CPC’s mission and values, passionately follows Jesus, and deeply loves people. We are ready to depend on You, Lord, and give You the glory!
