CPC LIFE
T I M E. Time has different meanings—some mundane, some maddening, and some sacred. When you’re in your 1,438th staff meeting, time feels wasted . . . when you forget about the construction on Highway 100, and you’re already running late . . . when you hear there’s “only two minutes left in the game,” but it takes ten minutes and thirty-eight seconds till the final whistle . . . then time seems maddening! But when you watch a child’s first steps, time is sacred. The Greeks even had two words for time: chronos, referring to the clock and passing days, and kairos, times of opportunity, times that change the soul. Which time do you keep better track of? Do you spend more time with your calendar counting hours, or with your journal making time count?
Churches are no different than our culture. We’re so BUSY we want to squeeze time, rather than seek the wisdom of Psalm 90: “Teach us to number our days, that we might gain a heart of wisdom.” It’s why we must pause, why we must celebrate the seasons God gives us as a community. A 60th anniversary doesn’t have the flair of a 50th or the zing of a 75th, but it’s a marking moment for Christ Presbyterian. New denomination. New values. New construction. New vision: “To boldly extend the invitation Jesus makes to us, to everyone.” Our hope is that you join us in this “pause that refreshes,” and capture this sacred moment with us.
John Crosby serves as Senior Pastor.

In 60 SECONDS a staff member from each CPC ministry area shares the latest news from their team.
Debbie Manning Associate Pastor for Care (CPC & The Table)
David Hammond Director of Creative Worship
Our Table summer sermon series wa s on Br i a n Mc L a r e n’s b o ok Naked Spirituality: A Life with God in 12 Simple Words. Seventy Table people came together in small groups to study, discuss, and challenge one another to live a life centered on simple, doable practices that help connect us to God. It was amazing to see people encourage each other in a way that was truly transformational! And in August we welcomed our new team member, Melissa Schaser, as Associate Pastor of Congregational Care.
This fall I’m very excited about finding a stride as a staff. As we welcome additional team members, we get to f ind a f resh sense of identit y together, a feeling of possbility. It seems like we’re moving into a new era instead of just a new fall.
Jordyn Farris Associate Director of Elementary
Debbie Ducar Membership Associate Every summer I try to call all the new members we’ve welcomed from the previous year. I love hearing what their summer plans are and getting to know just a little bit more about them. It’s one of the highlights of my summer!

This fall we are focusing on helping people experience Jesus on a deeper level. We have to receive the invitation Jesus gives to us every day in order to share with others the Good News. And this fall we’re offering my In the Word class on Tuesday evenings, as well as a new ministry for moms of tweens and teens called Moms in the Middle.
I am excited about how CPCers are leaning into the biblical theme of justice by focusing our efforts on anti-human trafficking with our mission partners both locally and globally.

Are you the mom of a tween or teen? Trevor Tinsley High School Ministries Director of Programming Sara Lightbody Musical Arts Associate T his sum mer we’ve done most of our Saturday night ser vices i n A nderson Hall. It ’s a lot of work to make worship happen in two spaces on a weekend because of equipment and logistics. But it means so much because we are worshiping again in our original space—built in 1956!
At Sum mit we brought a whole additional bus-worth of students to a new camp in Idaho. We took their phones from them before they got off the bus, and for the next week they just played without worrying about technology. And on a personal note, a huge highlight is that my wife and I are having our first baby at the end of November: a girl!

CPC IN
DAYS
How did you hear about the Connections Pastor position at CPC? My first experience with CPC was back when Upper Room was here in the early 2000s. One of my wife’s friends invited us because she knew I was in ministry. I loved how people who wouldn’t normally be engaged in faith were being reached here. So that’s how I first knew the white steeple church off of Highway 100. When I started looking for a job in the Twin Cities, I jumped on a job search site and Christ Presbyterian Church popped up with a Pastor of Outreach and Connection. Outreach caught my attention because I love the question, “How do we engage people far from God?” I checked out CPC’s campaign video, and it actually gave me goose bumps. I thought, This is different. CPC wasn’t trying to do these really cool and trendy things. It was just John Crosby talking about CPC’s six values, which were already my values. I thought, This is probably a job I need to apply to.
JAKE KIRCHNER
What were your first impressions of CPC?
Even in the first couple of meetings we had at CPC, both my wife, Angela, and I felt cared for. There is an authenticity among the people of CPC that we felt pretty quickly. To see senior staff serve and have humility was a big part of it, too. When we were cleaning up dishes around the lunch table, and John Crosby was one of the first ones to clean up, I thought, That’s cool and rare. The values were evident—not just things on a piece of paper, but things that were already being practiced.
Your job is a new position. What does it entail? My job is really to stand at the front door to welcome people in and get them connected to the body of CPC. But we are also trying to rally those who are inside to be inviters when they leave, sharing our stories in our neighborhoods and workplaces.
Minnesota Nice has a bad reputation because people think Minnesotans are closed off. But when you return to Minnesota Nice after a long time, there’s a lot of beauty in it. We came out of Target here, and Angela and I both thought how weird it was that people look at you! In a lot of other places you can go through a checkout line with the cashier never looking you in the eyes. Minnesota Nice can be leveraged in this way because it really starts in the right place—let’s see each other. Let’s share our stories.
What are you interested in outside of your work?
I love problems. Being introduced to a new problem gets my brain ticking really fast. Trying to find creative solutions where people think there are dead ends. I also love helping others discover latent potentials. It brings joy when I see my kids figure things out. There’s also something about just being outside, walking, lakes, trails. Hopefully there is enough sunlight this winter that I don’t get pale—there have been times when people say to me in the middle of winter, “Are you OK?” I just need sunshine!

“Salt and light is not a compliment—it is a responsibility.”
“Humility is the single greatest and most indispensable attribute of being a team player.”
– WILFREDO DE JESUS
“True humility is agreeing with God about who you are. True dependency is agreeing with God about who He is.”
“See risk as a friend to love, not an enemy to be feared. Without risk, we go from pioneering to persevering.”
“There will always be more good ideas than there is capacity to execute. You have to say ‘no’ to good things to be focused.”
– JOSSY CHACKO
We polled CPC staff and leaders to list their favorite speakers. Here’s the top five: Patrick Lencioni

As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of Christ Presbyterian Church, we want to embrace both the legacy of God’s faithfulness to us and our call to faithfully step into the future. Join us this fall as we claim Jesus as the cornerstone and seek to extend the invitation He makes to us, to everyone.
