Perhaps more than any other biblical figure, we have vast knowledge of Moses’ story. BORN UNDER THREAT OF ANNIHILATION

ESCAPED AS AN INFANT DOWN THE NILE

RAISED BY AN EGYPTIAN PRINCESS AS HER OWN

Discovering that he was, in fact, an Israelite, Moses murdered an abusive Egyptian overseer and lived an underground life of shepherding. Forty years later, Moses heard God’s voice and answered:

“Here I am.” AND A NEW CALL ON MOSES’ LIFE WAS BORN.

STANDING UP TO PHARAOH’S ENSLAVEMENT OF ISRAELITES

PERFORMING MIRACLES IN GOD’S NAME

LEADING A WANDERING NATION TO FREEDOM

COMMUNICATING WITH GOD FACE-TO-FACE

Right before his death, Moses climbed Mount Nebo, where God said to him, “This is the land I promised to your ancestors. I’ve let you see it with your own eyes. There it is. But you’re not going to go in” (Deuteronomy 34:4).

Moses was an orphan, stutterer, murderer, prophet, disappointment, and hero. Let’s spend the next two months learning from his story.

“Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush af ire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes; The rest sit round and pluck blackberries.” - ELIZ ABETH BARRET T BROWNING

What makes you think “I’ll be with you,” God said. “And this will be the proof that that I could ever go to Pharaoh and lead the children of I am the one who sent you: When you have brought my Israel out of Egypt?” people out of Egypt, you will worship God right here at this very mountain.”

t age thirty I was worn out. I had taken a series of jobs with increasing responsibility and pay, but in exchange I was paying the high price of less and less fit combined with more and more pain. While outwardly it looked good and seemed to be “what you should do,” I was inwardly moving toward an increasingly perilous place. My “burning bush” arrived one freezing January day when two good friends and my wife, Molly—in a series of uncoordinated conversations—essentially told me I was climbing the wrong ladder and that I needed to get off and find the right one. While I was frightened by the implications of what they were telling me, I knew they were right. I was also just smart enough to know when you hear the same thing three times in one day you can listen—or pay the price. (I once heard the adage that if God wants to get your attention, He’ll start by throwing a pebble. If that doesn’t work, He’ll throw a boulder. I was not interested in finding out what the boulder looked like!)

Two weeks later I resigned my coveted position with a wife and two kids at home. A week after my resignation, we learned a third child was on the way. It was a scary time, and nothing about what we did made “sense.” But that leap began a now sixteen-year vocational journey and adventure that we would not trade for anything. It led me to a place of peace and fit in my work, it has moved my family, for different seasons, to the other side of the world (Zambia and Kenya), and it now has me running an organization that harmoniously blends many different chapters of my career—including the painful years. I believe more than ever that God wants to light our path. I’m comforted by the fact that it took the contrast of darkness in that chapter of my life to keep me open and looking for the spark.

TO FLOURISH

Moses’ father-in-law said, “This is no way to go about it. You’ll burn out, and the people right along with you. This is way too much for you—you can’t do this alone. Now listen to me. Let me tell you how to do this so that God will be in this with you. [. . .] They will share your load and that will make it easier for you. If you handle the work this way, you’ll have the strength to carry out whatever God commands you, and the people in their settings will flourish also.”

THE MAN WHO

Y E S T E R D AY

“No prophet has risen since in Israel like Moses, whom God knew faceto-face. Never since has there been anything like the signs and miraclewonders that God sent him to do in Egypt, to Pharaoh, to all his servants, and to all his land—nothing to compare with that all-powerful hand of his and all the great and terrible things Moses did as every eye in Israel watched.”

KNEW GOD FA CE -T O - FA CE

DEUTERONOMY 34:10-12

RECEI V E S TEN COMM A NDMENTS AT MOUNT SIN A I

S

o who was Moses? Slave. Prince. Murderer. Peasant. Miracle worker. Revolutionary. Lawgiver. And to top it off, he was still going strong to the end: “Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyesight was sharp; he still walked with a spring in his step” (Deuteronomy 34:7). Despite all that, he never made it to the Promised Land—so did he fail or succeed? What’s his legacy, for the faithful then and now?

THERE WAS SOMETHING ULTIMATELY MORE IMPORTANT THAN HIS PEOPLE’S CHANGE OF ADDRESS: THEIR CHANGE OF HEART. Moses’ legacy is that by the time the rescued slaves departed the wilderness, they left behind their longing for Egypt and the golden calf. Instead, they became people of the Book of God’s Law. And we build on the legacy of Moses every time we hear His Word.

The legacy of Moses is also embodied in his protégé, Joshua, who heard God say, “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you.” Even more, Joshua loved the God he saw Moses follow, telling his exiles, “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve . . . But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Moses was a man who followed God’s call. And though he didn’t reach the Promised Land, the Promised Land came to him. Exodus 33 says, “As Moses went into the tent . . . The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend.” Friend of God. Now that’s a legacy for us all!
