his is Jesus’ upside-down Kingdom. When He teaches the Beatitudes, Jesus reverses everything the world finds important—power, success, comfort, recognition—and in its place, He shows us that His rescue is all we need.
As you turn the pages and read perspectives on the Beatitudes, don’t view this as a manual for how to win God’s favor or receive an entry pass to heaven. Instead, see this as a glimpse of what life should look like for a heart that is transformed by the gospel of grace.
A
t CPC we want to reveal how Jesus matters in our lives, and we’ll explore that by spending much of this ministry year studying His most famous teaching, the Sermon on the Mount. His first words, “Blessed are,” point us to His first lesson: that we are meant to be blessed, to flourish in life as we follow Jesus into His Kingdom. God’s Word is meant to fill us with “life in all its fullness,” rather than to punish or guilt or harangue us. Secondly, we’ll continually observe how Jesus contrasts the way of modern life or religion and His path toward that blessed life. He literally turns our life upside down with His proclamations, beginning with His statement that the poor in spirit—those in need, those overwhelmed in life, those at the end of their rope— are recipients of God’s endless, abounding love. Through the Beatitudes, we are reminded to live life on God’s terms, not our own. Life’s circumstances change daily. But the Beatitudes that bless the pained and the poor and the despised of the world remind me that the God of heaven and earth is unchanging.

T
he beauty of the Beatitudes is that they aren’t commands, imperatives, or a list of what we have to do. The beatitudes are the Gospel—the good news that something new is happening. God is acting in and through Jesus to turn the world upside down. In a world where mourners often go uncomforted, Jesus changes everything, and we get to be part of His work in the world. I get to witness this good news every month in our Grief Group here at CPC. On the second Tuesday of the month, a team of lay ministers gather together with those in our community that are grieving the loss of children, spouses, siblings, parents, and friends. There are stories of pain, suffering, and great loss. But in the midst of the tears, through the loving presence and listening ears of those who follow Jesus, people are comforted. I love the Message translation of Matthew 5:4: “You are blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you can be embraced by the One most dear to you.” That’s exactly what happens when we lean into Jesus and one another when we mourn. We experience the love of God in a way that changes everything.

hat is meekness? The image that first comes to my mind is someone who is especially shy or quiet. Which makes me wonder, Could I ever be meek, given my talkative, extroverted nature?
In Colossians, Paul places the virtue of meekness in the same category as compassion, kindness, humility, and patience, calling us to clothes ourselves in these traits (Col. 3:12). These qualities resonate so much more with me! Jesus offers compassion to those who are suffering, kindness to the outcasts, He humbled himself within society, He was patient with his disciples, and, of course, it took immeasurable meekness for Jesus, the Son of God, to become human, to dwell among us, and to endure the cross. In our society we don’t often lift up meekness—we love the winners, the stars, the celebrities—and life was no different in the ancient world. Yet Jesus entered in, fully God and fully human, and chose to take the path of meekness. He spent most of his time in relationships, sharing, teaching, and speaking. Jesus demonstrated meekness by humbling himself and by listening to others, living a life of modesty and compassion, and demonstrating to the world the abundant and everlasting love of God.

“
R
ighteousness” is not just a stuffy word about following rules. Rather, “righteousness” is about God’s power to make right that which is wrong. To hunger and thirst for righteousness is to find ourselves full of longing for God to rectify the things that are broken in us and in our world. Amazingly, that’s been God’s plan all along—to make us righteous through the work of Jesus and to work through us, imperfect as we are, to make things right in the world around us. We are blessed when we long and labor for this righteousness in the power of the Spirit.
I can’t help but think of my friend Jolie Kpaka, a colleague of mine in Congo. She is currently enrolled in an economics master’s program at Daystar University in Kenya, thanks to scholarship funding from CPC. Throughout her childhood, Jolie and her family went through several periods of displacement because of armed conflict related to land and natural resources. In light of this experience, Jolie is passionate about helping communities care for rather than compete over God’s creation. In a context where environmental conservation and human survival are often seen as competing ends, Jolie is dedicated to breaking down that dichotomy, aware that caring for creation is a defining element in obeying Christ’s call to love God and neighbor. Jolie’s dream is to return to Congo and pioneer her community’s first waste management system that will improve the health and well-being of the land, air, and people. She is an example to me of what it means to long and labor for God’s righteousness.

his is much easier to live out in theory than it is in practice. We live in an age where people are so easily offended, where we stubbornly insist we are right—and we feel compelled to make sure others know how wrong they are. But Tim Keller says that when we become a Christian, we give up our right to be offended. Just as God no longer counts our sins against us, we should no longer count other people’s sins against them. What is your internal reaction to that? For many of us, the initial response is anger, followed with, “But you don’t understand how awful that person was to me.” The Beatitudes not only reveal the ideals of the kingdom of God, they also reveal where I still wrestle with God’s ideals. They vividly point out to me where I need Jesus to die for my sins. As I come to Jesus and ask to receive His grace and mercy, transformation begins in my heart. One way to read the Beatitudes is to see them as a description of how the grace of God takes hold of our lives. The truth is that we cannot give mercy to others until we begin to grasp our vast need for that same mercy. When our hands are full of God’s mercy toward us, it will certainly overflow to the lives of others.

he pure in heart are not those with a perfect heart, but those whose heart is free of shame, unworthiness, and guilt. I think first of the children, students, and adults with special needs who participate in our Tapestry and Mosaic ministries—they give and receive a pure love so freely. The pure heart is a heart that is freed up to see God. Not to actually see the face of God, like the Apostle Paul talks about, but to see the work of God in our lives. The clearer our hearts are—free of our own needs, wants, and desires; free of our own self-centered need for approval—the more alert we are to God revealing His love for us. God is not interested in our outward appearance. He is most interested in our hearts, and the one thing that cleans up our broken, sin-filled hearts is to recognize our need for Jesus and what He did on the cross, to honestly confess what we’ve done wrong and ask for His forgiveness. When we experience that freedom—when our hearts are unencumbered with sin, and are made pure by Christ’s sacrifice for us—we then can know God more clearly and love others more abundantly.

f we were to replace this with today’s language, I think Jesus could have said, “Blessed are those who strive for peace, for they are inviting people into God’s family.” I think it’s important that we see that peacemaking is not passive, but active. The concept of shalom, or “peace,” goes far beyond the absence of turmoil. It can be translated as “completeness” or “wholeness,” and it means that something is working in harmony, or doing exactly as intended. To strive for peace is to pursue the flourishing of all, inviting them to live as a part of God’s family on earth.
Being a peacemaker is not just the work of social justice warriors. It is the daily, small actions that each of us take to love our family members, neighbors, and coworkers. Not just those who are easy to love, but also the talkative person ahead of us in line and the aggressive driver on the road. Making peace begins on the local scale—we strive for peace in small ways every day. After all, what good is preaching peace on a global scale if we bring disharmony, disunity, and brokenness by the way we treat others? In the end, Jesus fulfills the Jewish concept of shalom, or peace, by embodying the idea of a flourishing human, living every moment as He was intended to live. May we live with such intentionality, and in doing so, invite more into God’s family.
PETEY CROWDER serves as P A S T O R of A D U L T M I N I S T R I E S
If Jesus were to give this Beatitude today, He might say something like:
When you are faithful to your commitment to God, no ma er the negative consequences that come your way, you discover a keen awareness of how to flourish here and now, regardless of the When you make choices that set circumstances you find yourself in. things right—with you and God, you and others, you and your world—you won’t have to wait for When you are mocked or ridiculed life a er death. You will experience for living a life that honors God, life that is truly life now. you gain insight into what is lasting and undiminished both in When you make your connection to God this life and the life to come. your top priority and your desire to honor Him outweighs your desire to be accepted by others, you will see and hear how God is moving and working in the world around you.
There may come a time when you lose something because of your faith—when ease and comfort are taken away from you because of your love for God. Don’t let it get to you because in those moments, you will have access and insight into the eternal movement of your Creator.
