T

his is an important question, and one worth pondering. A great follow-up would be to ask: How much time do I give to what really matters? I don’t know about you, but I suspect I spend far less time on what really matters and far more than I realize (or would like to admit) on lesser things.

Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and Senior Pastor of Saddleback Church, has four file folders on his computer screen, where he stores different ideas and tasks. The first one is labeled: What does God want me to do? The second: What do people I love need me to do? Third: What do I want to do? And finally: What do other people want me to do? Which folder do think might have the most items in it? According to Warren, it is number four: What do other people want me to do? I bet that is true for most of us, as well. Now, I’m not saying we shouldn’t do things for others, but if we’re spending most of our time doing things in the fourth folder at the expense of the other three—well, that’s a problem. The second folder, What do people I love need me to do? certainly needs our attention. And number three, What do I want to do?, has its place, as well.

S E P TE M BE R

But the first one—What does God want me to do?—is the one that should get our best time, our greatest energy, and our laser-focus. This September we are walking through the second chapter of 1 Peter in a four-part series titled “What Really Matters.” Together, we’ll be exploring four elements that influence our formation as Jesus followers:

7/8

JESUS MATTERS

1 PETER 2:4-8

14/15

CALLING MATTERS

21/22

MISSIONS MATTERS

28/29

COMMUNITY MATTERS

1 PETER 2:9 1 PETER 2:11-12 1 PETER 2:10

We believe these four themes are crucial as we become, in increasing measure by God’s grace, the people Christ Jesus desires as well as a community to which others are drawn. We hope you’ll join us as we worship the One worthy of our adoration and consider together what really matters.

CO M M U N I T Y:

Reminding Us That Jesus Matters

I

have a messy faith background. Religion, from a very young age, was sort of a divisive force. Some of the religious beliefs and practices in my extended family caused conflict that eventually isolated loved ones. Growing up, we were “Chreasters”—we’d come to church for Christmas and Easter. Then I went to a Catholic college far from home and didn’t know anyone, so I joined a pre-orientation retreat just to make friends. It happened to be run by the campus ministry. That started my faith journey. I still felt really insecure about my knowledge of the Bible, what faith was supposed to look like, and what a relationship with Jesus was supposed to be, but it was such a good church home. Every sermon felt related to where I was in life—young, in college, excited, and uncertain. Then I moved and started attending a new Catholic church, and it felt like whiplash; it didn’t look anything like the faith I’d been experiencing. Sadly, I felt super disengaged, and I didn’t attend anymore. In 2013 I moved back to Minnesota, and my parents invited me to attend CPC with them. That’s when my faith really started to flourish. We would attend together and then go get brunch. It was wonderful and really awesome when Paul (then boyfriend, now husband) started joining us, too. Sunday was for God, but then it was back to work on Monday. In the next few years, life started to become hyper-focused on my work. It was during this time that I felt my life was becoming more and more self-centered. I’d hear prayers about Jesus being the center of our lives and a firm foundation, and I was like, I’m pretty sure I’m making my relationships and identity at work the foundation of my life. There’s gotta be something I can get connected to here where Jesus can be more than just for Sunday. As a next step, I ended up in Pastor James Madsen’s class on Tuesday nights. I was so nervous. I didn’t know anything about the Bible. I didn’t even have a Bible to bring—I had like a Catholic youth Bible—and I felt so self-conscious bringing that. So I quickly downloaded the Bible app on my phone, and of course I get to the class, and no one is on their phone! But the class was great. It really made me start to feel like life wasn’t just all about me. A transformative moment was when James told a story about asking someone to pray for him that he might love Jesus more or better. I loved his request. I’d never even thought of that! What would it mean to love Jesus better? To love Him more? To give Him more of my heart? It opened my heart to Jesus in a new way, in a way I didn’t know was possible, a space that I didn’t know was there.

Then Pastor Melissa Schaser married us and was really good at staying connected to us, which was vital, because marriage isn’t without unexpected turns—you think things are going one way and then all of a sudden it goes another. Life has been really bumpy. In our first year, I was overworked and found a new job, then we moved, and then we were pregnant, and then I had a severe form of morning sickness that left me feeling isolated and broken. I remember during my pregnancy, I was full of questions of what it would be like to be a mom and how to deal with all the anxiety I felt. Sue—who I usually sit next to in Bible class—reminded me that fear and anxiety is normal, and to think about how much I already loved my growing baby and to imagine how much God loves us. He’s going to be with us regardless of the good and bad. Her words brought comfort that felt so different than what I’d get from my nonChristian community. It’s a beautiful thing to be reminded that God promises to be faithful to us and to be with us. Our child is going to have heartbreak and beautiful experiences, but he’ll never be alone. Where we’ll fail him, because we’re human, God will be perfect. He will take our imperfections and make us whole. Easton was born, and within six weeks, we had to put our dog down, I got pneumonia, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic they gave me and I couldn’t nurse Easton anymore, and then I was back to work. It was supposed to be joyful, yet it was just such a dark time. Our CPC community reminded us of our foundation during this turbulence, helping us anchor our lives on something bigger than ourselves. That’s what saved us in those tougher times. I'm still working on How do I love Jesus more and better? It's a good thing James still has a seat for me in class! I do think I have more capacity to love Jesus now—putting my faith and trust in Him, especially through the ups and the downs. Bob Goff writes, "Jesus never promised to eliminate all of the chaos from our lives; He said He'd bring meaning to it." The past few years have been total chaos, but it's Pastor James and Melissa, our loving parents, and our CPC family that have helped us understand the meaning in the mess. Being surrounded by a community of Christ followers means we have people who will pick us up when we aren't doing so well and continue to carry us toward Jesus. And I've learned that community, at its most meaningful, reminds us of what matters: having a relationship with Jesus. CPC LIFE

NE W FA CE S at CP C We added four new staff members over the summer!

JOSH MEYERS

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUR JOB IN ONE SENTENCE: I walk with students as we learn who God is and who God made us to be.

BRIAN LENZ

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF TECHNICAL ARTS

The Good Samaritan

YOUR JOB IN ONE SENTENCE: To make sure everyone who needs to be seen and heard can be seen and heard.

FAVORITE BIBLE STORY: The loaves and fishes. I love the interpretation that it was a miracle not because Jesus magically multiplied everyone’s food but because everyone shared what they had. That loving our neighbors and trusting in tomorrow’s bounty is within our reach at all times.

WHAT DREW YOU TO CPC? I found CPC through teaching guitar lessons to Ashley Crowder (Pastor Petey’s wife). I was drawn in and continue to be inspired by the abundant welcome I’ve felt from the entire community.

WHAT IS ONE HOPE YOU HAVE FOR THIS YEAR? I want to extend an equally warm welcome to the guests and congregation on Sundays and throughout the week.

CORY GREGORY DIRECTOR OF CONNECTIONS

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT WORKING AT CPC?

YOUR JOB IN ONE SENTENCE:

CPC has such a huge gift. I’ve worked or volunteered in churches where we were surprised when six kids showed up for Wednesday night youth group. Of course, numbers are not the most important thing to God, but the fact that hundreds of students show up to our church on Wednesday is still incredibly special. It means that this community trusts CPC. They trust that when their kids show up here they will meet God and they will meet people who care deeply about their kids.

Creating systems and experiences that encourage people to engage here at CPC, whether they are brand new or have been around for years.

WHAT IS ONE HOPE YOU HAVE FOR THIS YEAR? I hope that our kids feel a deep sense of community and belonging with each other at CPC, and I hope that translates into a deep sense of responsibility to each other outside of CPC. I hope these kids are looking out for each other and looking out for the kids on the margins wherever they go.

FAVORITE BIBLE STORY: The formation and spread of the early Church as found in the book of Acts

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT WORKING AT CPC? Having served here years ago, this feels like a homecoming for me. This community is where I claimed my adult faith as my own, and I treasure the relationships—old and new—that make this place so special.

WHAT IS ONE HOPE YOU HAVE FOR THIS YEAR? To continue building clearer, easier on-ramps for people to engage in the meaningful ministry happening in and through CPC.

UNDERSTANDING the OLD TESTAMENT Many Christians find the Old Testament long, intimidating, or just too confusing to read. Join Dr. Nick Schaser for a closer look into the Scriptures of ancient Israel—a great companion to our October/November worship series that walks through the Old Testament. This seven-week series will equip you with practical knowledge about important figures, events, and theology.

Advance the Common Good Learn how Christians can bring hope and leadership to their communities!

FAVORITE BIBLE STORY:

Speakers Include:

The Woman at the Well (John 4)

WHAT EXCITES YOU ABOUT WORKING AT CPC? I am excited to share the Gospel with children and their families and to see how Jesus will plant seeds of faith to further transform and redeem our community.

WHAT IS ONE HOPE YOU HAVE FOR THIS YEAR? I hope students will learn to trust God’s character and experience God’s family. It will hopefully be a year where friends become best friends and kids will confidently insist that “they’ve got this!” as they explore the Kingdom of Heaven.

aiting. Let’s face it: we don’t like it. Sometimes the wait is short—we wait in grocery lines, on elevators, at stoplights. Sometimes the wait is long— we wait for that someone, that something, that someday. Waiting is that moment sandwiched between where we were and where we will be, a moment that can be wasted or a time that can be redeemed. So as CPC sits in a time of waiting as we seek our next senior pastor, I encourage us all to consider how the following practices can help us grow in God’s grace. REMEMBER HIS FAITHFULNESS CORINTHIANS 11:23-26

FOR THE LATEST TRANSITION NEWS, VISIT CPCONLINE.ORG/TRANSITION

DON'T WASTE THE WAIT

When we share in the Lord’s Supper, it is an act of remembrance we do while we wait for His return. Similarly, while we are in this season of waiting, there is great value in remembering all He has done. In considering the things He has accomplished through us, we are filled with awe and gratitude. We are encouraged when we recall that once we were lost, but Jesus found us; that once we were blind but Jesus healed us. In the recounting of His faithfulness to us, our faith is strengthened. COMMIT TO PRAYER ACTS 1-2 As Jesus’ followers watched Him ascend to the Father, they remembered His words: “Wait for the gift my Father promised. . . . And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Then they gathered in the upper room and “joined together constantly in prayer.” That was how they waited . . . in prayer. And consider the power-filled miraculous

revival that happened! People from all over the known world heard the Gospel in words they could understand. The Church was birthed through the power of prayer. Just imagine what will happen in our lives and in our church as we wait in God’s presence for God’s power to do God’s purpose. CONTINUE BUILDING HIS KINGDOM JEREMIAH 29:4-9 Sometimes when I am waiting, I can be tempted to think, Why bother starting anything until the next season begins? Are you tempted to think that, as well? We are apparently in the company of the Hebrew exiles in Babylon, who were hoping and praying and waiting for an immediate deliverance. Here is what God needed to say to them while they were waiting: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease.” Continue doing the ministry, planting the Gospel seeds, and increasing in number—while we wait. Continue living the life Jesus has redeemed for us. In the seasons we wait, God is still on the move and Jesus is always inviting us to join Him in doing even greater things. In this season of transition, we can trust that God is at work, making all things new, arranging all things for good and for His glory. In this transition, we can continue to grow in Christ’s grace.
