The Story Your Life Tells F

or the CPC staff, this issue of CPC Life is our absolute favorite every single year. Why? Simple—we get to tell stories of what God has been up to in YOUR lives! We get to make a big deal about how Jesus has been changing the way you see and serve others. And we get to see how the invitation of Jesus has been delivered and opened! We hope you enjoy these stories as much as we do and, more importantly, we hope you consider what story your life is telling. When we serve others, we not only follow in the footsteps of Christ, but we get stretched in our relationship with Him, as well. Over Lent we read in Mark 10:45 how Jesus tells His followers that He “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Even during the atypical year we’ve had, we’ve been so encouraged to witness so many in our community willing to take Jesus up on this invitation to care for and love others. As you read the following stories of CPCers serving Jesus—and as you consider your own journey of knowing and following Him—we hope you’re also reminded that the Christian life is one meant to be shared. We serve alongside others in the Body of Christ as a reminder that we’re part of something so much bigger than us! In that spirit, as you read these stories and consider what God is saying to you, I want to encourage you to continue engaging with CPC over the months ahead. And, if you feel comfortable, we’d love to see you in person!

I make sure we’re keeping on time, that small groups are running smoothly as the teen leaders walk the kids through the curriculum, and I help to keep all of those pieces coordinated. The teens I work with are so dedicated and amazing—the younger kids look up to them and respect them so much. A ton of work goes into creating what Club is on

y wife and I, along with our daughter, Hutson, moved to Minneapolis from Atlanta five years ago. Our previous church didn’t have a dedicated staff that led Sunday programming, so it was very volunteer-based, and we helped teach Sunday school alongside some other parents. Through that experience we

saw how our investment impacted and enriched the lives of those little kids. But the benefit was really reflected back to us! As they would grow and learn and be so excited about Jesus and God’s Word, we realized they were teaching us. When we started attending CPC, we wanted to get our footing to see where we fit in here. We started slowly, just volunteering a couple of Sundays each semester. And then that grew a little bit, and we tried doing it once a month. And then Kathleen [Selje, Director of Kids’ Ministries] asked if I would be a part of the P-Link team (a parent advisory team). Being a part of that team gave me so much more exposure to what is happening in the youth and children’s programs—far beyond what happens on Sunday mornings. When you come on Sundays and you see what happens, it is so impressive. But I was blown away when I got involved and saw what takes place for the youth of this church every day of the week. This year has been both my daughter’s first year attending Club on Wednesday nights and my first year serving. I am a large group leader, responsible for the 3rd-5th graders.

Wednesday nights. It is no small task! It has made me so appreciative of the staff to recognize all the care and love they shower on our kids. My daughter has loved Wednesday nights—she’s hooked! At home, my wife and I see Hutson singing the songs and doing the dances that help her memorize Scripture. To see those types of things manifest themselves in her life outside the four walls of this church—and then to see them taking place on an almost daily basis—has been really powerful. She’s also started to develop a community at church. So when she is in her small group, she has connection. What I’ve learned while serving is that God can use regular people if we’re willing and available. I am a very imperfect person, and Jesus has been able to use me as a part of His ministry. But the other way He’s really made a difference in my life in the last 18 months is just how much my community within the church has been enriched. Not only has it grown in size, but relationships have gotten deeper. This church is now a home. Being able to invest in kids and to develop relationships with others has been amazing.

CPC LIFE

I

n 2015 I was at a point in my life where I was pretty unhappy, deep down. My job was not rewarding, and I didn’t have kids to put my energy into. I basically felt like I wasn’t adding any value to the world. A year earlier a friend encouraged me to connect more deeply with my faith and made me realize I’m not on the path God wants me to be on. So I asked myself, What can I change? I’d lay on my living room floor and listen to the song “Help Me Find It” by the band Sidewalk Prophets: “I’m done fighting, I’m finally letting go . . . If there’s a road I should walk, help me find it.” I’d then ask God, “What’s next?” And incredibly, fortunately, I was able to quit my job. I knew this was what God wanted for me, but I didn’t have a plan. It was hard, but I knew I was in the right place. I started both Bible Study Fellowship and Lay Care Training at CPC that fall. Those two things were really meaningful to me. I had a BSF leader who just wrapped her arms around me and helped me. And I loved Lay Care Training. I’ve had some special relationships with seniors since I was a college student, and I knew I wanted to do Senior Visitation. I was paired with Grayce Muske in August of 2016, when she was 99 years old! We’ve been partners for more than 4 years now. We just click! We used to go out for dinner, and I’d take her to Mid-Month Chapel services here at CPC.

I’ve always felt more joy when I serve others. s 101st r ayc e ’ ! G g n i t pril e b ra ce cel urns 104 in A y a r G d t Ann an day. Grayce birth

I love Grayce’s self-deprecating sense of humor, and I have so much respect for her. A couple of the beatitudes stand out to me when I think of Grayce and what I’ve learned from her. Blessed are the meek—she’s very humble, and I really admire that. She’s done so much in her life and has a lot of wisdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit . . . she’s had to depend on God in such significant ways. As Pastor Jody [Phenow] says, she truly is Amazing Grayce! I’ve always felt more joy when I serve others—regardless of what form that takes. As I purposefully changed direction in my life, I knew that faith was going to be the way forward for me. I’ve been a Christian since I was little, but I’d been trying to do it on my own. I’d lean on my faith during tough times, but I never made it front and center. But I feel that it’s my foundation now. When I quit my job, I kinda handed God the keys, and He’s dropped things in my life like Grayce. I’ve also always wanted to mentor kids and tutor, so now I’ve been volunteering at Edina High School for the past five years. I’m passionate about education and helping kids accomplish their dreams of going to college. Serving there is really meaningful to me. My mom has always set a great example of service for me, and of course Jesus was all about being a servant to those around Him. I’ve always loved Hebrews 12:1-2, about throwing off what entangles us and running the race before us. I was getting tangled up, so I’m working to get free. I don’t know where I’m going, but I know better how to run it—with Jesus beside me. And I know that serving is what Christ wants me to do. Deep down, instead of sadness, I now feel joy.

M

y family has been a part of CPC for three generations now. I was baptized here and grew up at CPC. I’ve always loved Wednesday nights, and starting in middle school I found a lot of meaning in really diving into topics that were personal to me. During Commitment Class we filled out a packet that helped us reflect on what we believe. I was dreading it a little bit—it took more than four hours—but I actually loved it. Even though my hand was sore from writing, and my back was aching from arching over on the floor, I felt at peace . . . like I was in the presence of God. I’ve formed such a deep bond with my TEN12 group. We are so open with each other. That’s been really cool, because at school, conversations about Jesus just don’t take place. It’s the best part of TEN12: connecting with other people my age who share my values and faith. I started meaningfully praying at least once a day a bit over a year ago. It’s been very helpful to have that consistency whether I’m on top of the world and filled with joy, or having a really crappy day. When I’m struggling, it’s really helped to turn to God, to find peace in Him, and be reminded that I am worth loving. When I started praying, it was for success, but it gradually evolved to something better. One of my prayers is, “Lord, help me to spread your Word and your love, to treat others as I want to be treated and as you want me to treat them, and to live my life for you.”

It’s really special to help kids start their journey of faith. That’s what I get to do when serving with Kids’ Ministries on Sundays and Wednesday nights. I show God’s love by playing with kindergarten-1st graders and sharing God’s Word with them. It’s really special to help kids start their journey of faith, to teach about Jesus and what He wants for us, and to create a fun and safe environment for them. It’s rewarding to feel that I’m making a difference through the personal connections I have with these young kids and to know that I am living the way that God wants me to.

I’m so thankful that I’ve been able to continue to serve, even in the midst of a global pandemic. It’s such a difficult time for so many people; we really need connection with others and connection to our faith. There are definitely some days when I just came from a ski race, I might have a test the next day, or I’ve just been busy and I need some time to breathe, and I think, Maybe I shouldn’t serve tonight. And then I go anyway, and it’s like, How did it even cross my mind that it might not be the right idea to go? It’s an experience that’s so worthwhile. I think everyone should serve with Kids’ Ministries at least once. Try it with a friend—Sunday school always needs the help. Give it a chance and there’s a good possibility you’ll get hooked on it! Serving has brought a new process of defining my own faith and carrying it out on my own. When I’m helping out at church with the kids, it’s just amazing. I feel at peace, like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.

I

grew up in an Evangelical United Brethren church, an off-shoot of the Mennonites. I was at church at least five out of seven days a week! It was our social life—and it was absolutely wonderful. I can’t think of a childhood that was better than mine. We had no money, but it was so wonderful because everyone circled around the church and lived as Christ’s servants. People were genuine in their faith and desire to follow God. Volunteering is in my blood. I grew up in a small town where if you didn’t volunteer, things didn’t get done. So I know how important it is. But I think what is most important to me is something that Pope Francis has said: Faith isn’t something we possess, it’s something we share. And so demonstrating that faith and working with people, being there for people . . . I think it’s what I’m all about. In Romans we read about how God has given people different talents and ways to serve. I am not musical or technical, but I feel I am serving best when I am serving other people. I get so much more back from volunteering than I ever give.

I get so much more back from volunteering than I ever give. When I retired in 2017, I volunteered to be a greeter on the First Impressions Team. And I knew immediately that I wanted to start participating in Bible studies at church, which I couldn’t do before because of working full time. I started with Women in the Word, and I was placed in a group of brand-new attenders. I am in awe of all of the wonderful women in this group! They are so intelligent and insightful and helpful in each other’s faith journeys. We really bonded, and after that first year, the leadership of WITW asked us if we would take over for the next year. Together we handle all the logistics—recruiting, choosing the study material, and greeting and organizing each gathering. With COVID, we’ve done a hybrid way of meeting this year. Some have elected to meet at church, and the others are meeting by Zoom. We are grateful that Zoom is an option, but everyone is chomping at the bit to get back in person! Our experience together isn’t just the time in study, it’s also the social interaction, the hugging, the listening to stories. We are hoping that this spring will be the last time we have to use Zoom and we’ll be back together—because we also have fantastic breakfasts! Serving has connected me with others in such a meaningful way. It’s so energizing both to help others and to work alongside others who are volunteering, to witness how happily they give, to be encouraged by them, and to be listened to.

ls

on

I’ve also been served by the church this year through grief support. My son took his life a year ago. It’s been a terrible year, and with COVID, we couldn’t interact with anyone—there wasn’t any personal touch or way to grieve. But the church was so fantastic, and the grief group has been so amazing. As much as I have given to the church, the church has given to me ten-fold.

If you want to know Jesus in a deeper way and fill your life with purpose, you should seize the opportunity to serve. Everyone is welcome, everyone has their own gifts, and there’s a place for those gifts at CPC.

W

hen Nathan and I were fairly newly married, we were looking for a church that was welcoming, had Bible-based teaching, and was focused on the grace of Jesus. At CPC, starting with the greeters at the door, we were like, “Whoa, this is personal, and this is real.” That was the hook for us—this really big church could feel small. I think it’s unique for a church of any size to have that welcoming feel and to be able to make real, deep connections. About two and half years ago, I became a parent volunteer for Kids’ choir on Wednesday nights. My participation evolved this year with the virtual program. It was sort of accidental because I was picking up the art supplies and music for the fall semester of Kids’ choir and I kind of shouted out to Heather [Hood], “If I can help out in any way, let me know!” She asked me if I could present the next art project, and I thought, Oh, absolutely. I’m a former art teacher and an artist, so it’s easy for me to whip something together.

We’re taught to love one another, and the way I can love is by giving my time in service. For the spring semester I was asked to formally team up with them to create art projects for the kids that fit with the curriculum. The goal was for the message of Jesus’ love and grace to land within the hearts and minds of these little ones, through music, prayer, and art. I wish people knew how much love and care, patience, and planning goes into Kids’ choir—it’s so amazing! The challenge for me was finding that quiet, alone time to have the space to think and plan well. As a stay-at-home mom, there’s always the tyranny of the urgent with my kids. It was such a gift to have this space to collaborate again and share ideas with Heather, Abby, and Shandra [Kids’ choir team]—and to use my artistic and leadership talents to serve God. I never imagined I’d be teaching art projects on Zoom, but it was so nice to model my faith through supporting this ministry and serving the kids. I have an active memory of my parents being part of my Sunday school class or children’s choir experiences. That’s a huge part of why I serve—I think it’s so good for our children at CPC, and my own kiddos, to see adults giving their time. You know, at every baptism, we commit as a church community to loving these children and raising them up in Christ. I think for them to see us giving our time and truly caring about each one of them is so powerful. It makes a difference in how they grow in faith. I grew up going to church, so I’ve never not known Jesus, and I’m grateful for that. In the good times and the bad, Jesus has always been a with me. He’s in my mess, He knows my weaknesses. His gift of grace and peace is just incredible. Service is my innate response to that, and it has become a part of who I am. We’re taught to love one another, and the way I can love is by giving my time in service. Being a follower of Jesus isn’t just going to church. It isn’t about serving in order to check off that box. It’s about your heart and being all-in, living your life for Jesus.

With Gratitude

Debbie Ducar Debbie Ducar serves as Associate Director of Women’s Ministries and Staff Liaison to Deacons. After 28 years of service, Debbie is retiring on May 31. She’s excited to begin her unofficial job as “Volunteer Guru” on June 1. Look for information about a celebration in May! If you would like to send a note of gratitude to Debbie, please mail to: CPC, c/o Clare Anderson, 6901 Normandale Road, Edina 55435

What year did you start working at CPC? 1993 How many different job titles have you had? A lot! Membership, adult discipleship, deacons, women’s ministry.

How many supervisors? At least 5 How many offices have you had? I’m not sure I can count that high . . . at least 8! Which is good, it makes you clean out your stuff. Favorite Church Holiday? Easter How many years have you worked with Mom’s Morning? 20 How many years in your small group? 14

What was your first interaction with CPC? It’s very holy. I walked into Bible Study Fellowship at CPC in 1979, and they were singing this song with the words “may Jesus Christ be praised,” and I was like, “Why would we do that?” If I could have gotten out of my row easily, I might have left right then, but I couldn’t, so I stayed, and I stayed for 16 years. It was a big learning curve because I believed in God, I just didn’t know why Jesus was such a big deal. It took about a year and a half before I got it. I didn’t know it then, but that was a pretty amazing day.

Why is service such a value of your faith? I became a believer at forty years old, and I was crazy enthusiastic. I was at a place in my life where I had more time available, and I think my husband rubbed off on me, too. He was very committed to service. In fact, he retired early because he had so many service things he wanted to do, and he had to get started! But ultimately, coming to Christ so late in life, I wanted to make up for lost time. Once I understood why He was worthy to be praised, I really, really wanted to serve Him.

with service and then see, years later, how they’ve become a deacon or an elder or are on leadership of Mom’s Morning. The best part of my work has been seeing people grow in their faith and their service.

What are some of the highlights of your ministry at CPC? It’s been a joy to witness people realizing the gifts they have and find the right service outlet for using them. About five years ago, we started Women Who Inspire. That was fun to empower lay people to start something and to see them be really excited about doing the work to make that idea come to life. Working with deacons is also a highlight because it had been so meaningful to my life as a lay person. To come back to it fifteen years later from the staff side has been incredible. Really, every day coming to work has been a highlight.

What are you excited about next? For me to have such a meaningful job at CPC for these years in my life is amazing. A lot of people don’t get to do that. Retiring might be the worst idea I’ve ever had! For what’s next, I want to keep doing things that have a purpose. I love the idea of continuing to volunteer at CPC and also expanding out to volunteering at other places, but not be in charge. I know that an event going well or deacon service on Sunday morning running smoothly never depended on my leadership—it always depended on God. But it’s sort of a relief to not have to worry about leading. I’m looking forward to just being a volunteer again.

How did you first come on staff at CPC? I was very involved as a deacon, and I think they felt sorry for me—I put so much of my heart and soul into that role that they offered me a job as the volunteer coordinator! I interviewed and plugged new members into some place of service. That led to working for adult education, then women’s ministries (since 2001), and then adding the deacons ministry (in 2010).

What have you loved about working with our lay people? I have spiritual gifts of shepherding and encouraging, so it makes perfect sense that I would love working with the volunteers. Sometimes people aren’t sure of where they want to serve or if they even really want to serve. They sort of tiptoe in. It’s been rewarding to help people get started

What have you learned about Jesus in your walk with Him? I think I’ve gone from seeing Him as a little scary, and maybe judgmental, to very loving and forgiving. And then, probably, I saw Him a little too much as a friend, and I find myself now going back to “Whoa, Jesus is still Almighty God.” My first question all those years at BSF was, “Why does He need to be praised?” I was really asking, “Why in the world would He care about me, and why should I care about Him?” I’m always learning about God’s character and being reminded of His forgiveness, even when I keep doing the same bad things over and over again. Jesus has done all the work for us already. I know now that Jesus is definitely more than worthy to be praised! CPC LIFE

Ministry Fund Giving January 2021 budget: $500,836 January 2021 actual: $332,275 February 2021 budget: $447,563 February 2021 actual: $310,166 Our fiscal year began June 1, 2020 and ends May 31, 2021. We are behind on giving revenue fiscal year-to-date by $77,037.

The faithful generosity of CPC’s giving partners empowers every ministry—every staff member, every volunteer—to follow God's call and extend the invitation Jesus makes to us, to everyone. Here are a few ways our ministry fund has been used in 2021:

100+ NEW SMALL GROUP PARTICIPANTS We are so excited about the 108 individuals who said “yes” to our invitation to join or start a new 6-week small group this year. Your giving supports the staff hours spent planning, organizing, promoting, launching, and supporting these new groups. Are you interested in joining or starting a group? Visit cpconline.org/small-groups to get connected!

KIDS' CHURCH—AT CPC & AT HOME Our Kids' team staff is doing double time on Sundays! After quickly pivoting last March to creating videos to teach Sunday lessons to kids at home, we've gradually been able to welcome kids 6 months-5th grade back to Kids' Church! Whether at home or in our building, our CPC kids are learning what it means to be a part of God's family thanks to your generosity.

WANT TO SUPPORT THE MISSION OF CPC? When you become a giving partner, you enable us to wisely plan and budget and you fuel our ability to extend the invitation Jesus makes to us, to everyone. If you are not yet a giving partner, you can set up a recurring gift at cpconline.org/give, or if you prefer to give by cash, check, or other method, contact Courtney McKinley on our Finance Team at 952.920.8515 x241.
