f only those profound words from Dallas Willard would shape my life more often! I long to be cognizant that I am part of the Kingdom work of the God of the universe. But then the phone rings, and I’m off—pulled away from the eternal by the incessant now. So how did the Early Church explode from a roomful of scared peasants into the Church today of more than 2.1 billion people who say they are followers of Jesus? The book of Acts chronicles this amazing story, and the heart of this movement can be condensed to two words: Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses. . . . ”—and it happened. Just weeks after that proclamation, we read, “The Jewish leaders were astonished that the apostles were preaching so boldly, seeing that they were uneducated, ordinary men. And they took note that they had been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13, emphasis mine).

I REALIZE THAT IN ORDER TO HEAR GOD SPEAK, I NEED QUIETER VOICES RATHER THAN LOUDER ONES, STILLNESS RATHER THAN FRANTIC ACTIVITY. Does that same Spirit work today, in our church and your life? If so, how? I believe God’s primary voice to me comes in Scripture, embedded in a community that lives it together. Eugene Peterson says it well: “We don’t form our personal spiritual lives out of a random assembly of favorite texts in combination with individual circumstances; we are formed by the Holy Spirit in accordance with the text of Holy Scripture. God does not put us in charge of forming our personal spiritualities. We grow in accordance with the revealed Word implanted in us by the Spirit.” As I type this, the fire alarm is being tested, going on and on and on . . . if only my spiritual alarm were as loud! But I realize that in order to hear God speak, I need quieter voices rather than louder ones, stillness rather than frantic activity, and then obedience to what I’ve already learned rather than waiting for the “silver bullet.” As we journey through the book of Acts this summer during worship, my prayer is that you’ll have a growing sense of the work of the Holy Spirit both then and today. May we all seek to recognize that still, small voice of the Spirit this summer—whether near the lakeshore, in the crackling of a bonfire, or in that rare time of solitude, when you can lay your heart before Jesus.

JOURNAL CONVERSATIONALLY Use two different colored pens and a journal to try to clarify “who’s talking” during your prayer times. Record your thoughts in one color, and what you think you’re hearing from God in the other.

FIND A “THIN SPACE” Celtic Christians believed that there are places where the layer separating heaven and earth is thin, places where God’s presence can be more easily felt. This might be a patio chair in your backyard, a bench at a nearby lake, a quiet coffee shop, or a room in your house. Identify a “thin space” and find ten minutes to sit in God’s presence.

03

SET A CLEAR SIGNAL Light a candle, put a “do not disturb” sign on your door, or use another signal to indicate to yourself and your housemates that you’re taking intentional time to listen to the Spirit.

CONNEC TING with the SPIRIT Discerning the voice of God. Seeing the movement of the Spirit. Listening to that still small voice. In 2018, these aren’t easy things to do. We are SO busy. So plugged in. So connected. It can be difficult to sit in the quiet, to listen well, and to see the Spirit at work in our lives. This summer, we want to encourage you to find space and use creativity to connect to God through the person of the Holy Spirit through intentional practices.

04

05

REFLECT ON SCRIPTURE

CREATE OR ENJOY ART

Find a Bible passage to read. Notice how God might be speaking to you through His Word. Take time to dwell on a word or phrase that catches your attention. Let your heart respond to God in prayer.

The creative process opens up space for the Spirit to enter in and speak to you through drawing, listening to or making music, or dancing. Find calm and openness through creating or appreciating art.

SEE GOD IN NATURE

“Without the Spirit we can neither love God nor keep His commandments.” – Augustine

Begin a walk by asking God to speak through the beauty of His creation. Clear your mind by focusing on the details of creation to allow space for God to speak to you.

06

PRACTICE REFOCUSING When you’re trying to sit and listen, your mind is bound to wander. Keep a pad of paper nearby to jot down a to-do list or other thoughts that pop into your head. Then mentally set those thoughts aside and return to listening.

CPC LIFE

cts is the story of the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of the Early Church. It’s a story that begins with Jesus imploring His earliest followers to seek and receive the power of God through His Holy Spirit. And it’s a story that ends with Paul in a Roman jail as the Gospel spreads to thousands of people in virtually every corner of the known world. One catalytic moment—when the Spirit of God shows up as a mighty, rushing wind to empower each and every Jesus follower—sets off a movement. What follows are moments of celebration, moments of healing, moments of near disaster, and moments where it felt like it could all fall apart. Yet along every step of the journey, God’s Spirit was blowing. The Holy Spirit of God works to draw people to Jesus, and then includes them in God’s extended-family-on-mission, the Church. It was happening in the book of Acts, and it’s still happening today. He speaks to our soul, just as He spoke to Lydia, Peter, Cornelius, Priscilla and Aquila, Paul and others, and invites us to join Him in big, but mostly small, ways. As you find yourself, like many Minnesotans, outdoors this summer, pay attention to the wind. Whether you’re in your yard, on the lake, at your cabin, or just out for a walk, feel the wind and let it remind you that God’s Spirit is at work in your life and in the world. Let it be nourishment for your soul, reminding you that you are not alone, that you walk with God, and God lives inside of you. God’s Spirit is always wooing your soul and remaking you into the image of Jesus Christ. Look for moments when His presence feels close. Then let us follow the Holy Spirit’s lead and walk with boldness into the lives God has for us.

W H AT LED YOU TO CPC? I was aware of CPC for years because of their partnership with Congo Initiative, my employer in Congo. I’ve appreciated that CPC has so much established already and is committed to a very holistic vision of mission: we care about people’s souls, bodies, and minds.

W H AT A RE YOU E XCITED A BOUT A S PA S TOR OF MIS SIONS? I’m excited that there are some really strong foundations here—missions lay leadership, historic connections, and partnerships to steward—but that there’s also opportunity to explore what’s next for CPC. I think missions is part of discipleship. So as we engage with people who are on the margins, as we engage cross-culturally, I want to help our congregation reflect on how these things speak back into our lives and how these interactions can make us more like Jesus.

YOU’RE FROM LOUISI A N A . W H Y DON’ T YOU H AV E A N ACCENT? Someone once told me that empathic people take on the vocal tonality of people they are around. If I were with my mom, you’d hear an accent. But my husband is from Wisconsin and then I spoke French in Congo, so my accent has sort of been gone for a while.

CA N YOU SH A RE A BOUT YOUR RECENT MIS SIONS E X PERIENCE? My husband and I began working in Congo in 2015. I was teaching theology to undergraduate students and developing programming to equip pastors, connect them to small learning groups, and give them space for selfcare. Living and working in Congo was my most formative

experience. It made me think hard about what true crosscultural partnership looks like. One of the things I really valued was working under local leadership in Congo— my team was Congolese, and that provided a different experience than if we had been in a missionary compound trying to implement our own project. It’s made me really passionate about indigenous local leadership and supporting missions that are moving in that direction.

A RE THERE MOMENTS TH AT S TA ND OUT IN YOUR LIFE W HEN YOU HE A RD THE HOLY SPIRIT OR FELT LED BY THE SPIRIT? The Holy Spirit speaks to me a lot through times of solitude, journaling, and space to reflect deeply on Scripture. And I try to check out what I hear in those moments with a few other people I’m close to. After accepting this position, I spent a lot of time in prayer, knowing that I was about to enter an environment that was pretty much opposite in every way from where we’d been. In Congo the resource needs were apparent all the time, so what did it mean to now do ministry in a place so resource rich? I felt God acknowledging that I was grieving the loss of Congo, and I heard, “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted, but not comfortable.” I also had this sense of God saying, “Emily, one of the things you learned in Congo was how to give me the loaves and fishes you had even though you felt like it wasn’t enough. That isn’t changing with where you’re going. You still need to live your life as an offering to me.”

The Memorial Prayer Garden

T

ucked away between 70th Street and the Sanctuary is the Memorial Prayer Garden: a place of quiet beauty, as well as a sacred resting place for members of our church family. Those who venture just south of the Sanctuary can retreat from the bustle of life and step into a space that offers a meandering path with decorative planters, a gazebo and benches, a water feature, and a memorial wall. The Memorial Prayer Garden was thoughtfully created nearly twenty years ago by members who desired a place to honor their loved ones and celebrate their lives. This is a place that recognizes the beauty of life as well as the poignancy of loss—along the engraved walls one often finds a bouquet of flowers or a symbol of remembrance. And though designed as a place of memoriam, it has also become a place of new beginnings: many brides and grooms commemorate their wedding here, as well. If you’ve never visited the garden, we invite you to sit on a bench. Listen to the gurgling water. Feast your eyes on the beauty of nature. Think of those you love. And quiet your soul and listen to God’s Spirit, who longs to be in relationship with you. Do you desire more information about internment for you or your loved ones? Please contact the main office at 952.920.8515 to learn about options and pricing for internment, engraving, and services held at the Memorial Prayer Garden.

REMEMBERING

Roger Anderson

R

oger Anderson became the founding pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in 1956 and served as Senior Pastor for more than 30 years, teaching, loving, and praying for this church and our community. Missions was always a focal point for Roger, and his passion was embodied through the commitment CPC has always had to share the Gospel and help those in need across the globe. Roger became a founding member of the Christian Volunteers of Minnesota, and his special interest in Africa led him to accept a teaching position at Daystar University in Kenya after his time at CPC. He and his wife, Dottie, were fundraisers for Daystar for decades, and eventually they returned to Minnesota in 2003, again calling CPC their home church. The community of Christ Presbyterian Church is grateful for Roger’s unswerving witness for Jesus and his ongoing support and care for this church. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). Roger’s memorial service was held at Christ Presbyterian Church on June 8, 2018. Roger is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dorothy “Dottie” Anderson, and a large family, including his 10 children, 27 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW ELDERS & DEACONS! At Christ Presbyterian Church our elders:

• are called to serve as spiritual leaders who seek to model in day-to-day life what it means to follow Jesus and to love and serve others. • work to be stewards and guardians of CPC’s mission and vision in partnership with the Senior Pastor and Lead Team. Elders approve priorities and plans to fulfill CPC’s mission and vision. The Senior Pastor and Lead Team are responsible for implementing those plans. • ensure faithful stewardship of the financial resources entrusted to CPC. • develop, encourage, and hold accountable the Senior Pastor and staff.

CLASS OF 2022 | ELDERS TIM D U L A S I first walked through the doors of CPC twenty-five years ago, and I did not know then how dear this community would be to my life. It was here that I attended my first Bible Study and gave my life to Jesus. I became a member in 1999 and have been part of a men’s small group for nineteen years. My wife and I were married here, and we have served together as deacons, led the Marriage Finance Class, and been Marriage Mentors. I am humbled to serve as an elder, and with the Lord’s help, I hope to give back to this community that continues to impact my life.

SUSAN GALL AG HER CPC has been my family’s church home for more than twenty-two years. My husband, Tim, and I raised our three sons here, experiencing Go!Trips to Alabama and Jamaica as a family. I’ve held leadership roles in both Mom’s Morning and the Moms of Teens programs, and last fall I completed Lay Care training, allowing me to serve both our seniors and new parent ministries. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Family Fest Ministries, as well. I am honored to begin supporting CPC as an elder, and in turn, continuing to grow in my faith in Him.

B ILL R IN G HA M I began visiting CPC shortly after my wife, Christine, and I were married. We recognized that CPC was a church where our faith could grow and also provide a strong children’s ministry for our kids. We joined CPC more than twenty years ago, and through that time I have helped with Sunday school, gone on a mission trip to Alabama, mentored on Wednesday nights, and been a deacon. Christine and I have also been blessed to be part of a couples’ Bible study for the past eighteen years. I look forward to serving as an elder as CPC continues to impact the faith of individuals and families that walk through our doors.

MEG HANN K ANTKE When my husband and I found CPC six years ago, it felt like coming home. What really wowed me was the way that lay members—even high school students!—served each other and sought to impact the world for Jesus. We became members in 2013 and have been invested in the Catalyst community since its inception. I have been blessed to learn, grow, and lead as part of that group, and I hope to bring the same vulnerability, humility, and grace I have experienced to my service as an elder. My prayer is that this thriving church might become a home to those looking to deepen their faith in authentic community.
