emember the Iron Crib Orphans? The first mission trip I remember taking with CPC was to Kluj, Romania, following the TV images of glassy-eyed infants, rocking endlessly in their beds. In the surge of abandoned children at the end of the Ceauşescu regime, orphanages were overwhelmed, the babies left alone for hours at a time, touched only for changing and feeding. They withdrew into catatonia, staring off into space . . . a chilling sight. When the West rushed in with blankets and food, medicine and warmth, the wards remained silent, devoid of the laughter and tears of babies, the noise C.S. Lewis called “the language of Heaven.” What was the answer? Our Advent theme is the answer: Embraced. The Incarnation shows that the God of the universe knows that food and blankets, toys and wealth, will never sustain the human soul; only the touch of God will. Christmas IS the touch of God intended to bring life and joy, hope and love, and a sense of belonging. For four weeks, we want to offer babies of all ages the Embrace of a God who will never let go, whose arms hold us through the best and

worst of times, rocking us not to sleep, but to life. Christmas is God’s rescue operation for damaged children, who look just like you and me. Advent is the answer: the Embrace of God makes us aware of those around us in a fresh way. Scattered throughout this issue is YOUR chance to share the Embrace of God with someone who sits and waits. Perhaps it’s ringing a Salvation Army bell, or shopping for a family through Adopt-A-Family. Perhaps you’ll be led to Embrace a cold urban teen through Calvary Church or Urban Homeworks, via the Christmas offering. Maybe you’ll pick up a t-shirt from Youth Enterprise in the Great Room, and your Embrace will spur the one who receives your gift onto a mission of his or her own. Or maybe you should plan now to invite a neighbor or colleague to one of the Christmas Eve services, so he or she might feel the Embrace of the One who “though rich, for our sake became poor.”

“The mission of Urban Homeworks is to perpetuate the hope of Jesus Christ through innovative community development that produces dignified housing for low-income families, a strategic network of good neighbors, and the redemptive development of real estate.”
CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH “We are a movement of people magnifying God by building mature, glad-hearted disciples of Jesus Christ. Our core purpose is to help one another enter and experience the Kingdom of God.”
Loving Our Neighbors By Mike Hotz, Missions
C
hristmas is an amazing time to ponder the mystery and power of “God becoming flesh and dwelling among us” (John 1). The incarnation of God through Jesus is a profound movement of God toward us. He moved in next door and became our “neighbor.” Neighbors share life together. Neighbors play, worship, work, and eat at each other’s tables.
Over the years, CPC has sat at Jesus’ table alongside many mission partners who have shaped our understanding of what it means to love our neighbors. Locally, nowhere is that truer than our partnership with Calvary Baptist Church and Urban Homeworks. Many at CPC have had their life and faith profoundly impacted through Calvary and Urban Homeworks as they live out their Kingdom ministries in the city. Through these partnerships, we at CPC have been blessed to sit at the table with immigrants, refugees, the hungry, the homeless, and the poor. In the process, these labels have taken on names like Brian, Vicki, Shauntina, Matt, and David. They have become our neighbors. At the same time, our own titles and descriptions (businessperson, soccer-mom, white-male) have taken on names and faces like Terry, Lisa, Dave, and Cathy. We have become their neighbors. No longer are we stereotyped into dim reflections of who we are but are revealed as fellow children of the King.
This Christmas we give our offering to the possibility of holy transformation that comes through relationships and mutually pursuing God. At Urban Homeworks, it is the continuation and expansion of the strategic network of good neighbors. At Calvary, it is the building of mature, glad-hearted disciples of Jesus Christ. And for CPC, it is to more closely follow, more deeply love, and more fully live as transformed people.

ne of the most powerful ways to love others is to lift them up in heartfelt prayer to the Lord. In all corners of CPC — from students to the homebound to pastors — there are people who regularly commune with God in support of each other’s needs. This is a sign of a loving congregation. At CPC, it’s also exciting to see how prayer engages “all generations.” Our 4th and 5th graders recently spent four weeks creating a prayer wall and learning how to talk to God through journaling. High school students maintain a Facebook page to share their prayer requests. Young adults at The Table have a Prayer Team that prays for the pastor and worship team, and also organized a recent prayer retreat for deeper study. The pink prayer cards in worship are one of CPC’s most visible avenues for prayer. You see them collected and prayed over during worship — but do you know what happens to the cards after the service is over? Lee Kerr, CPC’s volunteer receptionist, transcribes them into the Hearthside Intercessory Prayer newsletter, which she distributes to 65 members and many staff and pastors who continue to pray over the requests during the coming week. Lee begins each Hearthside with an inspirational story about

God’s love and mercy. Some who receive the Hearthside live far away, and many are homebound, but all feel a special calling to care for CPC through dedicated prayer. Young, old, healthy, and the infirm unite in prayer for the CPC family from the comfort of their homes, whenever the Spirit calls them.
Prayer and Healing Team lead, says, “People come to church with great needs — job loss, a family crisis, a devastating illness, hurt, and uncertainty. As we pray with them about their personal concerns, we can offer hope, comfort, and encouragement. They experience the love of Jesus and so do we.”
When not in worship, you can also submit prayer requests to prayer@ cpconline.org, which is then distributed to select members, staff, and pastors. They love when people email reports of answered prayer, too! If you want to pray with someone, members of the Prayer and Healing Team, part of Lay Care Ministries, serve in this way. You’ll find them after each worship service in the Prayer Room at the back of the Sanctuary, and they also meet during the week with those who desire dedicated prayer. Betsy Lee,
“Rallying to care and pray for each other” is one of CPC’s core values. When we pray, we also accomplish what CPC’s mission statement asks of us. We follow Jesus because He asked us to commune with the Lord. We love others because we intercede for them through appeal. And we live missionally because, “The more prayer there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil” (E.M. Bounds). Let us continue on this important journey of prayer together.

FA I T H S T O RY: A M Y H A N S O N
The first time my family visited CPC, it was Palm Sunday, and I was one year old. My parents saw me waddling down the aisle waving a palm branch and knew they had found a church home. Our family was involved at CPC from then on. The CPC youth pastors and leaders were hugely formative in my faith. My husband Greg and I were married in the old Sanctuary in July 1998. In 2004, my family threw a surprise party for the 60th birthday of my dad, Bill Widmoyer, with 60 of his closest friends and family. Dad said walking into the room with all his loved ones was like walking through the gates of Heaven. Two weeks later, my mom called and said, ‘Daddy is gone, Daddy is gone.’ My dad had gone for his typical morning run and collapsed in the driveway after he returned. The doctors say he died instantly. I loved what my brother Ross said at the funeral – that our dad had run straight into the arms of Jesus. Looking back, I see how God had been preparing me. In the year before my
ing halfway through another pregnancy if I was going to miscarry. I prayed that if I had to lose this baby, it would happen in the first trimester. Two days before the 12-week mark, I had another miscarriage. We named her Stella.
“ I prayed God would make something good of my grief.”
Around that time, I started praying through Isaiah 61. I prayed through that passage nearly every day for a year-and-a-half, including when I got pregnant again. It says God ‘proclaims freedom for the captives’ – so I prayed God would free me from the darkness I felt stuck in. It says God bestows ‘a crown of beauty instead of ashes;’ I had a closet filled with ashes of three unborn children, so I prayed God would bring me a crown of beauty instead. It talks about the ‘oil of gladness instead of mourning’ – and I prayed I would be glad with the two children I had, that I would be fully present with them. It says God will ‘restore the places long devastated’ – which, at the time, was my uterus! And verse eight says that the Lord ‘hates robbery and iniquity.’ I used to say I felt robbed of these people I loved, that my dad and three unborn children were unjustly taken from me. So reading that verse was like hearing God say, ‘I hate this, too, Amy. I hate that you’ve been robbed of these things.’ I felt His compassion.
Three years after Lily was born, I had my son, Peter. Ten months later I was surprised to find myself pregnant again – but at 15 weeks, they couldn’t find the baby’s heartbeat. I had miscarried. The doctors did all sorts of tests to determine what went wrong. It was hard to hear them talk scientifically about ‘my fetus’ while I grieved the loss of my son. We named that baby Michael. Three months later, I was pregnant again. They monitored me closely and everything looked great. But at 18 weeks, there was no heartbeat. This time it was a girl; we named her Tessa. We waited six months before I got pregnant again. I remember thinking I couldn’t bear go-
In September 2009, our daughter Kate arrived safely. She is truly a blessing. But I also know God didn’t have to give us Kate. He didn’t owe us a child; that was just His goodness to us. The process was about being obedient and trusting God through the dark times. And that’s what I’ve learned: even in times of great grief and loss, God is present with us. Each December, I go to CPC’s Candlelight Memorial Service and hang four ornaments on the tree in honor of my dad and the three babies I lost. I know I’ll see them again in Heaven. Like it says in Romans, we do not grieve as those who have no hope. And God wants us to choose hope.
After my dad died, at first I didn’t know how to pray. When people are sick, you pray they get well; when someone has a problem, you pray for resolution. But when someone dies, it’s done – what do you pray for? I read in My Utmost for His Highest that God can use our suffering to help us be useful to others. So that’s what I prayed: that God would make something good of my grief.

dad died, my daughter Lily took two naps a day, so I was able to have a daily devotional time. I’m not someone who audibly hears the voice of God, but one day I sensed a whisper I can only attribute to God, saying, ‘You’re going to go through something really hard. But it will be okay.’ I remember being startled by that – what did it mean? But it’s like God was teaching me to depend on Him. I’m also grateful I got to see what kind of grandfather my dad was. For those first 18 months of Lily’s life, Dad called her every day. I would put the phone up to Lily’s ear and he would talk to her. The last picture I took of my dad was of him and Lily walking hand in hand.

What We’re Reading visit pathway books to find these recommendations The One Year Books of Devotion
The new year is traditionally a time for us to reevaluate our lives and priorities. As Christians, one way to accomplish this is to spend a part of each day in reflection and prayer. Pathway now carries a variety of One Year Book of Devotions, a series of books with daily readings and Bible verses. In line with CPC’s mission statement, would you like to learn more about Jesus? Pick up The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament. What about better loving others? There is The One Year Book of Encouragement. Want to make an impact on our world? Try The One Year Book of Devotions for People of Purpose. Together, let’s make purposeful steps towards the Lord in 2011! Jennifer Boardman, Communications
by Timothy Keller Timothy Keller certainly knows his way around the Word. In his most recent book, Generous Justice, Keller cites Scripture passages, other historical resources, and contemporary anecdotes to bring home his primary message: a life poured out in doing justice for the poor is the inevitable sign of any real, true gospel faith. Keller believes that “a heart for the poor ‘sleeps’ down in a Christian’s soul until it is awakened.” Pointing to Old Testament Hebrew expressions, he contends the term “social justice” has been misused and suggests that, “Biblical righteousness is inevitably ‘social’ because it’s about relationships.” Generous Justice resonates wonderfully with our commitment at CPC to “live missionally.” Dave Schwandt, College of Elders
What We’re learning
redemption To “redeem” literally means to “buy back.” God’s redemption is the reality that while we were still lost in our sins, God rescued us (bought us back) through the birth of His son, and
The Power of a Whisper
Generous Justice
by Bill Hybels During Advent, we read the accounts of Mary, Joseph, shepherds, and wise men who listened and responded in obedience when God spoke to them. For most of us, our experience is not as dramatic as seeing an angel who gives us instructions. However, God still speaks, and listening for His whispers is a vital part of our relationship with Him. In his own life, Bill Hybels models the adventure of paying attention to God’s whispers. In The Power of a Whisper, Hybels shares inspiring, practical stories, and biblical principles: “Without a hint of exaggeration, I can boldly declare that God’s low-volume whispers have saved me from a life of sure boredom and self-destruction. They have redirected my path, rescued me from temptation, and reenergized me during some of my deepest moments of despair.” Laura Crosby, Formational Initiatives
by James Madsen, Adult Ministries provided salvation through the blood of Christ. Because Jesus is the Son of God, true God from true God, only His perfect life was sufficient to buy back our sinful lives. Along with eternal salvation, God is currently at work
redeeming our broken lives, giving us hope and meaning. God chooses to tell His story through the story of our lives. God is at work turning what Satan has intended for evil into the redemptive purposes of His kingdom.

for the world
Pray that we at CPC will take time to be still before the Lord, experiencing afresh the wonderful gift of Jesus and His birth.
Pray that the hearts of both those giving and receiving Christmas gifts through the Adopt-A-Family program will be touched and transformed.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; let every heart prepare Him room.

Rich Phenow
Q Why did you pursue vocational ministry? My mom exemplified what it means to be a compassion-dispensing person. She invited widows and hungry and hurting people around our table and ministered to them. She was somebody called by God to show up and to care and I wanted to be like her.
Q What does “Lay Empowerment” mean to you? It’s the idea of equipping members of this church for being the heart, hands, and feet of Christ. We have Hospital Visitation, Support Groups, Prayer and Healing, One-on-One Support, Helping Hands, Funeral and Reception Ministry, and Senior Visitation. CPC’s culture has normalized brokenness and we invite folks to experience the comfort and care that can only be given to us through Christ. Rich Phenow serves as Pastor of Congregational Care and Lay Empowerment. He served on staff from 1978-1981 and from 1987 to the present.
Q What does a typical week look like for you? Today I had a men’s small group; I prayed with someone who’s having surgery; I had lunch with a couple who is feeling challenged by children and grandchildren; I met with a young woman who is grieving the loss of her mother. Every week I have all kinds of opportunities to show up, listen, and care for people, and try to reflect God’s love for them. Q What’s the most challenging part of your job?
Hometown: North Minneapolis Favorite Book of the Bible: Psalms Books You are Reading: The Me I Want to Be and Maggie Favorite Food: Good BBQ Hobbies: Fishing and gardening

Sara Lightbody
It’s hard to see people hopeless and despairing and unable to embrace God’s love for them. It saddens my heart. But I absolutely feel privileged to do what I do, to go on holy ground in holy places with people. I love opportunities to listen and to remind people they’re not alone.
Q Is there anything else you’d like to tell the congregation? People often ask me what heaven will be like. Heaven will be a place where I will perform as a singer. Heather Hood asked me who I will sound like and, of course, I said Neil Diamond.
Q How did you end up at CPC? In 2002, Heather Hood was on sabbatical and I had just graduated from Bethel University. John Crosby called and said, “We’re looking for a temporary piano player for our Contemporary Worship team.” It was supposed to be for four weeks. I was the hired piano player for what turned out to be four years total. Q Where do you volunteer at CPC? I sing occasionally and I still play piano. But I often do presentation (running the worship screens) for the tech team. I’d never thought about doing anything technical. I thought, “I’m a piano player.” But there was a need and, before I knew it, I was one of the only people able to do it. Right now there are seven of us who can do presentation. I love to serve, to do whatever is needed to make a great overall church worship experience.
Sara Lightbody serves on the weekend production and tech team.
Favorite Book of the Bible: Romans
Q What are you learning in this season of life? I’m currently working as a school bus driver but am looking for a job in worship. Over and over I hear from God, “I have something great for you. In the meantime, be faithful and love what you’re doing here.” I’ve been so blessed by the relationships I’ve made at CPC. For years it was my job to show up and play and I was never so connected. Now that it’s all volunteer, I’m here more often, learning and growing with others. I love all CPC is and does; every time I leave, I think, “I love my church.” Book You are Reading: Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist
