hat do they all have in common? In each circumstance, someone’s frustrated, and someone’s really hungry. It’s a story we’re all familiar with . . . it’s the story of our world. And it’s the story of God with His people. These are all stories from the Bible: The refugees are Jewish slaves about to flee bondage (the Passover). The dying woman stumbles across a prophet (Elijah). Thousands flock to hear Jesus, hungry in body and soul (the feeding of 5,000). And Jesus is invited into a home, whether a Pharisee’s house or ours. But what happens next? Who goes away full, and who’s left hungry? Our sermon series, “Taste and See,” is this year’s journey to the Cross and the Resurrection. Every one of us gets hungry, in both body and soul, and too

often we satisfy ourselves with junk food instead of “the bread of life.” Do you know someone who’s tired or skeptical of “religion”—or maybe you find that applies to you? Why don’t we spend time together this month to talk about some of our deepest hungers? We’ll explore stories of people just like us who encounter scarcity and abundance. Let’s experience the joy of a fast and the power of a feast (and no, I didn’t get that order wrong; it can happen!). For the first time in human history, there are as many people who are obese and overfed as there are people hungry for their next meal. But all of us, ALL of us, get hungry. . . . Would you accept (and extend) an invitation to a table of great food, of wonderful conversations, of life-giving appetites? The Host is dying to meet you, and the cuisine is heavenly!

a seven-week experience of fasting and feasting in community

THE WEEK of MARCH 5: WHAT DO YOU HUNGER FOR?

THE WEEK of APRIL 2: FEAST as INVITATION

THE WEEK of MARCH 12: FAST in COMMUNITY

THE WEEK of APRIL 9: FAST in PREPARATION

As you sit at your table this week, ask yourself and loved ones what you really hunger for: For peace? For reconciliation? For community? Pray to be filled with the Holy Spirit. On Monday, March 13, fast as a church community during lunch. Use it as a time for prayer and thanksgiving. Visit CPC’s Facebook page at 12:00PM for a live discussion on why we fast.

THE WEEK of MARCH 19: FEAST with FRIENDS

This week, share a meal with friends from your immediate circle: Bible study crew, good neighbors, local family. Go around the table to answer, “When has God surprised you by turning a little into plenty?”

This is your week to expand your community! Invite someone new to your home for a meal or to a neighborhood restaurant. Enjoy good food and ask good questions. Holy Week is a time to remember Jesus’ walk to the Cross and His ultimate sacrifice. In preparation, abstain from a favorite food (coffee, sweets) or a habit (social media, exercise). Then add one of CPC’s Holy Week worship experiences to your schedule for personal reflection.

THE WEEK of APRIL 16: FEAST in CELEBRATION

He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Celebrate the risen Christ in joyful Christian community, surrounded by friends, family, and delicious food.

THE WEEK of MARCH 26: FAST for OTHERS

Half the world lives on less than $2.50 a day. This week forego a meal or two, then use your Nicaraguan bowl for a smallerportioned dinner. Give the money you would have spent to our Easter Offering or a local food shelf. CPC LIFE

I

was brought up in a religious tradition where we had certain rituals around not eating meat or days of fasting during Lent. However, I never understood why we did this. I always thought it was about winning God’s favor, God’s forgiveness, His acceptance. It was all about MY trying to please God. Part of my own challenge was feeling distant from God, feeling that God was disappointed with me and that somehow I could earn back His love.

It wasn’t until I was in seminary in the mid-1980s that I began to understand what fasting was about. I took a class with Richard Foster, a Quaker, and he wrote a book called Celebration of Discipline. It was all about spiritual practices—meditation, prayer, fasting. At that point I understood fasting in a whole new way. Fasting wasn’t about me being more spiritual or more holy, but fasting was really about trying to create more space for God and more opportunities to be connected to Him. Foster spoke how there is a difference between trying harder to connect with God and training to connect with God. He said these disciplines were a way to train ourselves to be more receptive, more sensitive, and more aware of God’s presence in our lives. So my Lenten practice every year has been to sacrifice something of great value and meaning to me, and that’s coffee. I give up coffee not because it’s a way for me to become spiritually greater than others or spiritually deeper, but as an opportunity for me to engage in greater prayer. What I find is that every time I desire coffee— which for me is very frequently because I start my morning with a cup of coffee—I turn that desire to prayer. So whether that is prayer for someone else, for family, prayer for decisions, wisdom, or guidance—I find myself in prayer. And consequently, I’m praying a lot during Lent! For about thirty years now I’ve given up coffee as a way to be more mindful of slowing down and being in a spirit of prayer. I also have the tradition of fasting every Friday during Lent, and years ago when I was younger, I used to fast all of Holy Week, when I was in “fasting shape.” The question to ask ourselves when we fast is: What is our motive? Am I doing this to be a spiritual giant, to please God? My motive is that I want to be connected. I’m not trying to become a “better” follower of Jesus—what I’m doing is consciously replacing my hunger with moments of prayer and reflection, moments of quiet. My advice for others is to have a plan. What will your fast look like? Will it be a fast from food? The news? Social media? And start small! It will help you stay in the practice and be part of the training, rather than doing too much too soon. And if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself less consumed with yourself and more connected to God in the process.

he more people to cook for, the merrier! It is a joy for me to cook, draw people together, and celebrate. I grew up in rural Minnesota where our church was always having potlucks—I always thought that was a beautiful thing.

I find that food opens up stories, allows us to share experiences. My husband, Todd, and I started inviting people over early in our marriage. We wanted opportunities to gather, and that continues today. Every time our family is in town for Thanksgiving, we open an invitation to our home, especially for those who are single, or recently divorced, or who have relatives out of state or the country. Everybody brings a dish that represents something from their family tradition, and it’s always fun because there is a story attached. I always underestimate the power of invitation. I cannot tell you how many people through the years—even those who couldn’t come to something we hosted—still remember we invited them. The beauty in sharing a meal is it makes a big, complicated world smaller. A big and complicated church smaller, too. We’ve come through a really difficult political season, and to gather around a table to have civil discourse with people who are different from one another . . . it acts as a reminder that the “other” is created in God’s image. My encouragement is to give yourself grace. Let perfection go. Take the stress off! If you don’t have time to break out the china, pull out paper plates and napkins and order pizza. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it doesn’t have to be complicated, it just has to be time together. Start small—but start!

“The Maundy Thursday service at CPC is my favorite service of the entire Church year. I am so moved by the silent, solemn dignity of the hour. The music is also very much in keeping with the prayerful impact this service encourages. I love the silent processional in darkness and the candles that are extinguished one by one at the end of each section of Scripture.” - MYRA HYKES

G O O D F R ID AY April 14 • 6:00 & 7:30PM • Sanctuary

These identical family-friendly services embark on a creative journey through the final hours of Jesus’ life.

Childcare: 6 weeks-3 years

“As a community of Christ followers, the beauty of actually touching and passing the cross is such a powerfully humbling experience for me. It reminds me of Jesus’ command to love as He did (by laying down His life for ALL of us!). The Good Friday service challenges me to ‘Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ’ (Galatians 6:2).” - ANNE HERMAN

“Our family has attended the Easter Prayer Vigil in the Chapel for twenty-plus years. It’s become a tradition for us as a way to prepare our hearts and heads for Easter. We first attended before we had kids—it was our time to peacefully reflect on the significance of Easter. Then it became a casual and comfortable place where our young kids could come along and read their Bible or tell the Easter story with their Resurrection Eggs. As they got older, we kept the tradition going. We appreciate the many options CPC gives us to worship as a family, make traditions, and create memories.”

“One thing that makes the Sunrise Service special is you get to experience in your mind what the three days would be like before Jesus rose again. As I walk around the church each time, I picture how the disciples would have felt, and I get to hear about the amazing sacrifice Jesus made for all of us. And even though this service is really early, the sunrise is beautiful. I think that the reason my family returns every year is that it’s just a really nice way to start Easter. With a holiday that normally loses its meaning to candy and eggs, it’s cool to remember what Easter is really about.”

“The many different parts of the Watchnight service are so meaningful to me. We start in a dark room that is soon illuminated by the light of one candle. I see the light of Christ. During the service we renew our Baptism and share Communion. The service is quiet and peace-filled. It’s just what I need to ready my heart for the celebration of Easter morning. He is risen. He is risen indeed.” - JACQUE JENSEN

TELL US A BOUT YOUR WORK B ACKGROUND. I have a Masters in Education with an emphasis in College Student Development, and I spent three years working at my undergrad—Biola University in California—as the Director of Student Transitions. Then I took a position at YouthWorks (YW) back in Minnesota as the Director of Training and Programming. Paul Bertelson was a former CPC Student Ministries staff member, and he started YW while he was serving here. YW facilitates mission trips for youth groups—between 25,000 and 30,000 students go on their trips each summer. As time went on, YW opportunities kept presenting themselves, and I spent the last four years serving as the Executive Director. So I essentially grew up in leadership there.

so that John can concentrate on the big picture and teaching. There’s a lot of opportunity to help make change and at the same time keep things that are important moving forward.

CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR FAITH JOURNEY? I am fortunate to have grown up in a Christian home and accepted Jesus in fourth grade. I was really involved at Wooddale Church and was given lots of opportunities to lead my peers. In the process of coming to work at CPC, I started fully realizing how much growing up in a church community positively impacted my faith development. I’ve always felt at home in the Church, and I’m so glad to make CPC that place for me both at work and in life.

W H AT LED YOU TO PURSUE A CA REER CH A NGE? My job had become a pretty big part of my identity, so I started feeling God saying that it was okay to let that part go. He was teaching me who I was to Him, not just based on what I can do at work. What appealed to me about this position at CPC was the leadership structure. Instead of having a pastor and executive pastor, we have a team of four leading under John Crosby (Sarah Norton, David Hammond, our future Director of Adult Ministries, and myself). I value the collaborative leadership environment—it’s very healthy.

W H AT MOS T E XCITES YOU IN LIFE? I love being a part of transformation, helping make change, whether that’s in an organization or in peoples’ lives. I think that’s why I was at YW for so long: Though I was five levels removed, I knew I was making an impact in a student’s life. And now at CPC, I am figuring out my part in helping staff live out our vision and values. I want to empower them and take away whatever distractions stand in their way, giving them room to minister to people. And that’s all transformation to me.
