A New Generation of Stories

I

came here 21 years ago this month. There were no laptops, Internet, or Lasik surgery, cell phones were the size of an iron, and the Iron Curtain was still teetering, about to fall . . . and now my kids don’t even know what I’m talking about when I complain about the Cold War! CPC was already a pretty special church of over 400 at worship, with a profound commitment to missions and a growing youth group. You’d hardly recognize the place, yet many of the faces that God used are still around . . . and isn’t that the way God seems to work, the blend of a changing world and growing people, with relationships that change us all? Through all those years, The Carillon newsletter has remained unchanged, doing lots of good work to hold this community informed and together. In an age of streaming video and text messages (to say nothing of Twitter and emails), The Carillon has done yeoman’s work, even as the world changed around it. I’m going to a conference next month where the theme is, “Remember the Past; Rejoice in the Present; and Re-Discover the Future” . . . and my hope is that CPC Life helps us go into that future together. I think CPC Life will better communicate the activities of our community, but that’s not why we’re changing. One of the strongest

attractions of CPC is the diversity of our stories. From youngsters to students to moms to great-grandparents, we all have stories that help us see the work of God. Often I can see God at work in someone else’s life better than in my own; in fact, hearing their story can give me courage or a new idea, or it can soften my heart. So much of CPC Life will show how our stories tell the larger story that God is writing inside these walls and to the ends of the world. I’m excited for you to get to know Martha Adolph (Faith Story, page 11) who has attended CPC for 42 years. She and Dean were married in the CPC Sanctuary, and this month their oldest daughter was, too. You’ll read how God is melting the heart of Andrew Lonsbury (Staff Spotlight, page 15), a young man serving at CPC while seeking ways to serve kids in Tanzania, too. You’ll learn about CPC’s commitment to building hope in North Minneapolis (Missions, page 6) — and maybe you’ll feel stirred to love your own neighborhood anew. And as you look into the diverse faces of our community (This Summer at CPC, page 12), maybe you’ll understand the “all generations” part of our mission statement in a fresh way.

unbelieving outsiders walk in on a service where people are speaking out God’s truth, the plain words will bring them up against the truth and probe their hearts. Before you know it, they’re going to be on their faces before God, recognizing that God is among you” (1 Corinthians 14:24-25, The Message). That’s my prayer for us: as God continues to show up, CPC Life will help share the story. There are so many things ahead; I can’t wait to hear a new generation of stories. Praise God!

Ministry Kick-Off

I know what you’re thinking: summer went by too fast. But deep down, aren’t you ready to get going again? Don’t you feel a little excited to see what God has in store for you this fall? How might God grow you, challenge you, or change you in the coming year? The staff has been working hard all summer to offer a wide variety of opportunities for you to explore this fall. Some are brand new; some are favorites we’ve offered before. We hope you’ll find a way to “come on in” to a new ministry year at CPC. I do know one thing for sure: whether you are in elementary school or part

participant in how God wants to grow you, transform you, bless you, or heal you. We can’t do this alone; we need others — whether one person, a small group, or a team — to learn or serve alongside. Our annual Ministry Fair takes place the weekends of September 11/12 and 18/19 in the Great Room. This is a great way to learn about the scope of opportunities at CPC and find a place to connect. I encourage you to make time to walk through the Great Room either weekend to browse the options and ask questions of those involved. If you don’t know where to start, pray that God will help show you where He wants you. You can also contact me directly at 952.920.8515 x226 or debbied@ cpconline.org. There’s no pressure, just an invitation to join in with how God is moving this year at CPC!

(January 15/16 – February 26/27) E MPOW E RED: The Philippians and Us (March 12/13 – May 28/29)

Each year we choose to focus on one overarching worship series. It’s a way of giving unity to our community as we are formed by Scripture together. Two years ago it was 100 Key Bible Passages. Last year it was the Writings of Luke. Now we turn our sights to the Apostle Paul, one of the heroes and architects of the Christian faith. In 13 letters to the early church, Paul shared words, prayers, and cautions as relevant to first-century Christians as they are to us today. Over the course of this school year, we will focus on six timeless aspects of the Christian identity. Together we will celebrate who we are, and who we are becoming, as a people and a church in relationship with Jesus Christ. We are inspired to follow Jesus, love others, and live missionally. We are invested with gifts from God and the privilege of sharing in His work. We are embraced by God’s love as He offers redemption through His child. We are renewed when we take inventory of where we are and how we can grow. We are transformed as we take next steps to live and grow spiritually. We are empowered by the example of Christ and His sustaining power.

Six key themes:

Join us each weekend in worship as we dive into these themes and work them into our lives. If you miss a weekend, stay connected at www.cpconline.org/messages to find audio, transcripts, and “Message Gear,” a one-page tool of insights and applications. We are excited about this year as we root ourselves in the epistles of Paul to deepen our identity as followers of Jesus.

I N SPIRE D : WHERE WE’RE GOING TOGETHER (September & October Worship Series) Paul made a revolutionary call to the early church: find your identity in Christ and inspire others to do the same. At CPC, we are passionate about living this out. Our mission statement as a church is “inspiring all generations to follow Jesus, love others, and live missionally.” Join us as we spend seven weeks diving into our mission statement, using Paul’s churches as a guide, to grow in knowing and sharing Christ in inspiring ways. October 9/10 | Love Others (Galatians 6:1-10) September 11/12 | Our Identity (Colossians 1:1-2) October 16/17 | Live Missionally (2 Corinthians 5:11-21) September 18/19 | Inspire (Ephesians 2:1-10) October 23/24 | Live It Out (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3) September 25/26 | All Generations (1 Timothy 5) October 2/3 | Follow Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:10-17) CPC LIFE

MISSIONS

ach Thursday, I pack my things and head to North Minneapolis for the offices of Urban Homeworks (UHW), a CPC mission partner, where I work remotely. I office there so that I can be present in an area of our city where CPC feels called to be engaged. Lovell Square is close to UHW’s offices and is their latest project, as well as CPC’s primary urban outreach this year. UHW was started by CPC’s former Youth and Missions Pastor, Paul Bertelson. Over the past 15 years, they have been relentless in their pursuit to reflect the love and hope of Jesus Christ by providing affordable housing that reweaves the fabric of community. Over the course of these 15 years, CPC has partnered with UHW on a number of projects. We have rebuilt duplexes, four-plexes, and during our 50th anniversary, helped acquire a 12-plex building that became the anchor for UHW’s presence on Emerson Avenue.

Dean and I have tried to teach our girls the importance of serving, too — that’s what we’re here to do, to serve God and His people. We’ve gone to Loaves and Fishes and Feed My Starving Children, plus mission trips to Mexico and Chicago. We’ve also had the opportunity to sponsor children through World Vision. It’s amazing to experience God’s love through the little bit we can give.

A Faith Story by Martha Adolph My family started attending CPC ‘‘in 1968. I was eight years old and an

antsy little thing. I didn’t sit still in the service, so I had the opportunity to work in the Nursery with Dottie Anderson (wife of founding pastor, Roger Anderson). I loved that; it was right up my alley. Dottie was amazing in that she was in there every Sunday morning. It was a busy nursery — probably 10-15 kids, both babies and toddlers combined. I loved spending that time with children, to just love them up and serve. That was when I decided I wanted to be a nurse and work with babies. College was not an easy thing for me, especially the sciences. I had to repeat some classes, so I prayed, ‘Lord, if you want me to be a nurse, show me what to do.’ He opened a door for me to attend a three-year nursing program. I was more of a hands-on learner and this program was perfect. It’s by God’s grace He got me to where I am today. I work as a labor and delivery nurse. I love that I get to be present with so many different women — single moms and women from all over the world — and witness the miracle of life.

If it were not for those core people in my life, my life would definitely be in a different place. I do love to serve. I don’t like to be up front; that’s not in my character. But give me a job and I’ll do it. Service just fills me up. My parents modeled lives of service to me. They both served as deacons and elders at CPC, and also volunteered in local politics. My mom, Evelyn Teegen, was very involved in the coalition to get the seatbelt law passed in Minnesota. It was actually Roger Anderson who encouraged my parents to speak with President Bush about other ways to serve, and that led to them being called as U.S. Ambassadors to the Fijian Islands. They went to Fiji in 1989 and served for three-and-ahalf years. They served as a team.

I know God will take care of Dean and me, too. It’s the next path of our lives and it’s exciting to see where He will take us. We can focus more on each other and serve the Lord more. When you have kids at home, your focus tends to go inward towards them. I feel like now I can serve God more. Yes, I’ve served Him in different ways — I was in leadership at Mom’s Morning and Moms of Teens, and I was a deacon and now an elder. But I just feel like God has different places for us to serve now. I also want to spend more time in His word. I hope this will be a season that I can sit more and listen. It will be a time of listening to what God is ready to teach me now. Sitting at God’s feet is a hard thing for me. I’m not a good sitter. I’m definitely more of a Martha. I live up to my biblical namesake! It’s easier for me to be doing than it is to be sitting. So that’s what I want to focus on in the next chapter: to sit and be still.

In My Own Words

Dean and I were married at CPC in 1983. As a young mom, I attended Mom’s Morning, and it was an amazing place for me. It not only helped coach us in parenting and how to study God’s Word, but my best girlfriends are from Mom’s Morning. We’ve raised our kids together; our kids are more like cousins than friends. If I could offer advice to young families, it’s that CPC is the best place you can spend your time. Get to know the Lord and who He is for yourself, and raise your children in His word. And surround yourself with a community of family friends.

Our older daughter, Sarah, is now 22 and was married on September 3 at CPC. It’s great that my wedding and my daughter’s wedding were both at this church, with the same organ being played. Rich Phenow, who attended my wedding, officiated at Sarah’s. Our younger daughter, Amy, is in her freshman year at Bethel. In this season of transition, I’m learning that God is an incredible provider. He created my girls and He has a path for them and a plan for them. I know I can rest in His hands; they are more His children than mine.

COMMUNITY LIFE

WHAT WE’RE READING VISIT PATHWAY BOOKS TO FIND THESE BOOKS PLAN B

by Pete Wilson It seems like lately I’ve talked to a lot of people for whom life isn’t going as they planned. People forced to face what Pete Wilson calls “Plan B” – a time in life when we’re going through something completely unexpected and it feels as if God were a long way away. Plan B is a relevant, no-easy-answers book that offers hope and spiritual insight for all of us dealing with shattered dreams and unmet expectations. He does a great job of drawing on stories from the Bible (David, Joseph, Job, Ruth) and real life contemporary stories to illustrate his points. This book is a very accessible read that offers honest encouragement for all of us. Laura Crosby, Administration

WRAPPED IN RAIN

by Charles Martin “Child, love always wins, always has, always will!” These are the words of Miss Ella, one of my favorite characters in Wrapped in Rain by Charles Martin. This is a story of two half brothers, one a famous photographer, one a resident of a psychiatric hospital, united by and struggling to deal with their childhood memories. Slowly, with the help of Miss Ella, God, and each other, they are able to forgive and make choices that allow them to move on. It is a story of pain, hope, redemption, and yes, joy, and it is filled with characters you won’t forget. Read it before Charles Martin comes to CPC on October 15! Carol Krebs, Pathway

As a kid, grace was explained by the acronym, “God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.” Grace is God’s mercy

by N.T. Wright When Paul sent his epistles to churches in Ephesus, Philippi, and Colossae, he wanted them to reach every person, of every social class, whether they were church leaders or lay folk. In his book Paul for Everyone: The Prison Letters, N.T. Wright has a similar aim: to make Paul’s letters accessible, understandable, and applicable to our everyday lives. Starting in March, our worship series will focus on Philippians, one of the four epistles in this book. Wright concisely explains every section of each epistle and includes helpful terms. This book may be better suited for study than a cozy, late night read, but it is a valuable tool as you explore the early church’s challenges and joys. Jennifer Boardman, Communications

WHAT WE’RE LEARNING

grace

PAUL FOR EVERYONE

by James Madsen, Adult Ministries extended to us, not because we deserve it, but because God so loved us that He sent His Son to die for our sins. The more God has lavishly poured out grace upon the broken places in my life, the harder it is to define with mere words. Grace is the

reality that my only hope is through the saving blood of Jesus. “There are times, and there will be times, when it will be absolutely clear that only God’s grace keeps us from falling apart, and even if we cannot hold on to Him, He will still hold on to us” (Johannes Facius).

WHAT WE’RE PRAYING by Gayle DeHaan and Barb Harmon, College of Elders FOR CPC

FOR OUR CITY

FOR THE WORLD

Back-to-school time reminds us that we need to keep learning spiritually. Pray that all generations at CPC would search out and take a next step on their journey with Jesus.

Pray that volunteers will step up to help Habitat for Humanity rehab Lovell Square, which will revitalize a neighborhood and provide affordable housing.

In August, CPCers ran a halfmarathon to raise money for clean water in Moyo, Zambia. Pray the new wells are successfully dug.

Andrew Lonsbury

How long has your family been going to CPC? Grandma Lonsbury was one of CPC’s first members. I think she came along just a couple months after CPC began. Needless to say she’s seen a lot at the church through the years. She had three children, two sons and a daughter, one of whom was my dad. Here I am three generations later. Where at CPC do you work? I have been so grateful to be a part of two amazing ministries within the church. I was on staff with Kids’ Ministries for a year and saw God do amazing things within kids’ lives. On August 30, I transitioned into my new role as Intern for Global Missional Engagement as part of the Missions staff. I am working alongside a great team to engage our community with our missonal partnerships overseas.

Grete Kirkeng

Tell us about your African experience? Towards the end of college, I started thinking about my next steps. It was so clear and heavy on my heart that the Lord was doing something with me in the continent of Africa. It started with something as small as typing “serving in Africa” in Google. What it’s amounted to is a couple two month-long stints in Tanzania working on our project with a school of 40 AIDS orphans. The goal and the hope in all of this is we’re really trying to bridge two worlds and I really think the Lord is doing something with the kids here and the kids over there. I really believe that Jesus meant it when He said, “Sell everything and come follow Me.” What do you see yourself doing in the future? I’ve got some big dreams. Six other young people and I are in the process of getting an acre of land for the school in Tanzania. My big dream is to set up a system for churches to really teach their kids about missions so when they become adults, they get that — whether they go or whether they send. I would love for the next generation of kids to really understand what it means to have a missional heart and share the love of Jesus.

How are you involved in DivorceCare? My love language is acts of service and John Crosby gave a sermon about the puzzle pieces missing in our lives. He laid puzzle pieces on the altar and I took a piece. I said to myself, “Service is missing. I feel like I’m ready to do something.” Now I’m a facilitator in DivorceCare. Typically we meet as one group and watch a video together. After the video we discuss, “How did you feel? What did you learn? What was profound for you?” Then we go through a workbook filled with discussion questions. How does DivorceCare benefit people? People who come to DivorceCare are so blessed by it. At the beginning of divorce there is a lot of anger and hurt. When you come to a place where other people have gone through it, you feel normal. I think that is the biggest benefit.

Grete Kirkeng is a volunteer facilitator in Lay Care’s DivorceCare program.
