perspective BY PASTOR TIM AHLMAN Last week I met a precious saint in Christ at La Mesa who does not have a consistent home. She has many struggles in this life. Yet, she daily makes the Holy Spirit driven choice to change her perspective. She said, “You know what Pastor Tim, when I come up to people who are obviously down in the dumps, I don’t ask them, ‘What’s wrong?’ Instead I ask them, ‘What’s right?’ You know why I can do that? Because even though I have struggles, I have way more right in life than wrong…all because of Jesus!” On September 18, we celebrated all that Jesus has done over our years as a church and school. The stories of Jesus at work left me so encouraged. I am so privileged to be your pastor. Yet, the next day I heard a few stories of God’s people grumbling because the service was different. That is to be expected I guess. But, I must confess that there was a 24-hour period where my

perspective was askew. I was focused on “what was wrong” rather than on all that was “right”! My poor perspective robbed me from the joy of celebrating Jesus. Maybe you can relate. Jesus daily invites us to change our perspective. And it starts with daily casting our eyes upon the crucified and risen Jesus who gave His life for us. Jesus changes the human heart. Jesus told his disciples that they would have trouble in this world. (John 16:33) Expect it. Jesus changed the disciples’ perspective by telling them, “I’ve overcome the world.” Jesus is in control of our today, tomorrow and eternity. Jesus will provide for all of our needs at CGLCS. Jesus will provide for all of your needs. Jesus will change your perspective as you seek His heart. May you rest today and always in all that is “right” and good because of Jesus.

ADAM’S ROAD CONCERT MONDAY, OCTOBER 10 @ 6:30 PM IN THE LIFE CENTER Adam’s Road is a Christian, non-profit ministry dedicated to sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song and testimony. Jesus unshackled four people and filled them with the knowledge of God’s amazing grace. Adam’s Road is made up of these four individuals, whom God rescued out of Mormonism and brought into a personal and saving relationship with Jesus. Through the transforming power of the gospel, those who once were blind, lost, and dead are now trophies of God’s amazing grace. Come hear their stories. Questions? PAGE 7 Our staff hopes you have enjoyed the prayer opportunities so far accompanying our series, Join the Journey 2.0 – Next Steps. Coming up in October, there are a few more ways for you to learn the art of stop, drop and pray!

STOP, DROP & PRAY!

the power of prayer BY VICAR JAKE BOESSLING Stop, drop and… roll? How about…pray! Stop, drop and pray! Have you ever heard someone respond to your situation with, “Oh, I am so sorry to hear that, I will add you to my prayer list. Bye.” And then they walk off. Now, some people might actually have a prayer list where they write down names in order to consistently pray for people privately. I confess, I have done the opposite. I used to tell people with good intentions, “I will pray for you” but in my sinful distracted busyness, I forgot to pray for them at all. And it left me feeling guilty and not in a good rhythm of prayer. I went on a mission trip to the Czech Republic a few years back. At the Vacation Bible School Camp that our team was serving as counselors alongside of the local Czech team, I noticed that the Czech way to pray is to stop, drop and pray. Right away, in the moment. A junior high student was struggling one night with depression… stop, drop and pray. A high school senior was worried about college… stop, drop and pray. A leader was getting tired and homesick… stop, drop and pray. The urgency and transparency of their prayer perspective changed the way I pray back here in the States. Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Sunday to Saturday, October 9 - 15 Every day during fall break at 3:00p, stop what you are doing and pray at the same time with your CGLCS family. Use #CGLCS on Twitter, and Facebook to invite others to pray.

PRAYER KNOTS!

Saturday, October 15 Join Debbie Barber on campus at 1:00p as she teaches you how to make your very own prayer knot to use in prayer throughout your day.

PRAYER CIRCLE AT THE BELL!

Sunday, October 16 After each Sunday service, gather in a circle at the bell in the courtyard and pray together.

24-HOUR PRAYER VIGIL!

Friday to Saturday, October 21-22 From 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 21 to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, October 22, the sanctuary will be open for prayers and quiet Bible reading. Also, sign up to volunteer for a 15 minute slot as a Bible reader to help us read through the entire New Testament in 24 hours. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Barber at BKBLVSDLB@AOL.COM. Jesus hears your prayers. Jesus loves you. And Jesus often times stopped, dropped and prayed to His Good, Good, Father. May we do the same! Too Busy Not To Pray, Vicar Jake Boessling Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

UPDATE FROM DUSTIN LAPPE I received a call to Messiah Lutheran Church and School in Lincoln, NE. While we’ve loved being in Kearney, this will be a really good fit for us in a lot of ways. The shared mission and vision, their worship style, the staff, the school, the community. It’s all a really good fit for us. I will be serving as Associate Pastor, working along side John Kunze. I feel like he and I will work really well together. Those who know both of us have said that very thing. My primary responsibility will be building relationships with and ministry to the young families (in the school, church, and community). I will oversee and work alongside staff like Small Groups, Men & Women, Youth, Children’s. I’ve met with those staff members and I see us working well together as well. I’ll also be there to encourage the school staff and be present among all the families. I’ll do all the weddings. And then share in preaching, teaching, and all the other pastoral duties we get to be a part of. The kids will go to Messiah. Trudi will be able to be a part of the staff at the school teaching. And then the kids can transition over to Lincoln Lutheran for middle school and high school. Also a positive. And Lincoln puts us closer to both Trudi’s family and mine. All good things that God has worked out. My end date here is September 25, and I start there October 9. Our home has been sold in Kearney and we’ve found one in Lincoln. On your end: I love seeing and hearing all the good things going on there. Christ’s Greenfield will always have a very special place in our hearts and minds. I’m so thankful that God called you there and life is being breathed back into the church and community. And now that Tim and Ruth are close that’s exciting too! It always amazes me how in our church body there are so many connections and overlap. I love how God works it all out:) Prayers are always appreciated! Blessings and peace to you!!

Spiritual Accountability Groups Where are you in your spiritual journey? Are you where you want to be in your faith walk, or do you earnestly desire to grow deeper in faith, understanding and service? Would you like a small group of brothers or sisters in Christ to help you in your faith journey? Of all the many blessings I’ve received this past year, perhaps the greatest is being in a SPIRITUAL ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP. I know, this may not sound exciting and life changing, but God knew I really needing this – meeting regularly with a small group of men dedicated to helping each other realize, develop, and be accountable for their spiritual plans and goals. I confess I am not as disciplined as I’d like to be in many aspects of my life! Spiritually, I strive

What & Why? to grow stronger and more disciplined in my prayer life, scripture meditation and study, reflection on God’s blessings, and discovering His plan for me. I think of Paul’s confession in Romans Chapter 7: “For what I do is not the good I want to do…” That’s me!

Last Spring, God provided two major influences in my desire for renewed spiritual growth and direction. First, was our Lenten series based on the book Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. Second was attending The Lutheran Cursillo. Both inspire intentionality, discipline and direction in spiritual life transformation. Just what I needed at this point in my life! I am blessed to be meeting with an accountability group springing from The Lutheran Cursillo Movement of Arizona.

Weekly we meet to share how each are doing in worship, prayer and meditation, Bible reading and study, and apostolic actions. Many of you are blessed in having your spouse as an integral part of your spiritual life. Still, there are sound reasons for having a same-sex accountability group of perhaps 3-4. Although there are other Christian accountability groups with great resources, I especially like the Cursillo groups, as they focus on faith life. If you’re interested, I would be happy to share with you the Cursillo accountability grouping information. In Christ, STEVE EHRMAN, DEACON

Faithful Living

Did you know there is a simple way for YOU to help expand God’s kingdom? Bring a child closer to Jesus? Make a lasting spiritual difference in a family’s life? You may think this is out of reach, but it’s easy to do all of these things by participating in the AZ Private School Tax Credit.

centered donors, who recommend Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran School each year on their Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO) donation. These donations create scholarships for CGLS students, making it possible for them to learn about their Savior each school day.

Nearly three decades ago, Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran School opened its doors. Today over 360 students from preschool to middle school receive a strong, Christ-centered education, with the core values of Christ, Quality, and Community. CGLS weaves Christian beliefs and Biblical truths throughout an up-to-date curriculum, while guiding students to be aware of God’s love and acceptance of all people. Teachers strive to set examples of faith and grace, wholly devoted to creating a caring yet challenging classroom where students can receive the utmost in academic privilege.

Your Participation Changes Lives! It takes so little effort to help a child and it costs nothing after the AZ tax credit. Go to acsto.org and donate online or ask for a brochure in the school office. Remember to recommend “Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran School, Gilbert” so your gift helps students at CGLS. Married AZ taxpayers can donate up to $2,173 and singles up to $1,087. Questions? Please contact Stephanie Bean in the school office.

While a Christian Day School education isn’t free, the AZ Private School Tax Credit makes it financially possible for all students to attend. Students at CGLS rely on faithful Christ-

William Williams (1717-1781) LSB 918 Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer Guide me, O Thou great Redeemer, Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with thy powerful hand: Bread of heaven, Bread of heaven Feed me till I want no more. Feed me till I want no more. The text for this hymn was written by William Williams, who is generally acknowledged as the greatest Welsh hymnwriter. Williams (1717-1781) was born the son of a prosperous farmer in Wales. He intended to become a physician, but at a revival meeting conducted by a Methodist evangelist, committed himself to ministry. In doing so, he solved a serious problem: the Welsh loved to sing, but there were few good hymns in the Welsh language and Williams proved to be a prolific hymn writer. Williams was ordained a deacon in 1740, however his evangelistic views kept him from being ordained a priest. Eventually he began to associate with the Welsh Calvinistic Methodists. Williams wrote more than eight hundred hymns during his lifetime. “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” is one of the few that has been translated into English and is the only one in common use in English-language churches today. This hymn is a prayer for a person going through tough times––a person traveling through a barren land––a thirsty person in need of water. “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” has been translated into seventy-five languages. It is so loved in Wales that it is considered an unofficial national anthem. For many years, Welsh crowds at rugby matches or other public gatherings would sing this hymn, much as we in the U.S. start games with the playing of the National Anthem. It was also sung at Princess Diana’s funeral. Williams made an extraordinary record as an itinerant evangelist. For forty-three years, Williams traveled nearly 100,000 miles on horseback, preaching and singing. An accomplished vocalist, Williams has been called the “Sweet Singer of Wales.” He drew crowds of 10,000 or more, one time speaking to an estimated 80,000 people. He noted in his journal that “God strengthened me to speak so loud that most could hear.”

PAGE 15

John Hughes (1873-1932) The tune for this hymn, CWM RHONDDA, was written by John Hughes (1873-1932) in 1907, for an annual singing festival. Originally named RHONDDA for Rhondda Valley, a great mining valley in Wales, Hughes added CWM, or valley, when he found there was already a tune by that name. At age twelve he was the door boy at a coal mine. Later he worked as clerk and then he succeeded his father as deacon and presentor at Salem Baptist Church. Hughes wrote many hymn tunes, Sunday School marches and anthems. Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, Be Thou still my strength and shield. Be Thou still my strength and shield. When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Death of death and hell’s destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee. I will ever give to Thee.
