Generosity

PAGE 3

BY TANYA CALENDO, CGLS PRINCIPAL

Have you noticed the weekly update on chapel offerings at the bottom of the Eagle’s View of the Week? Our goal for the first quarter was to bless Family Promise with $500. At the writing of this article, the total was $789.08 with one week still to go. Our generous students and families are using their change (and dollars) to make a positive change in our community. As we look ahead to the second quarter, our chapel offerings will go to Operation Christmas Child and the CGLC program that blesses local families with food and gifts for Christmas. (If you know of a family who would be blessed by this program, please email me at tcalendo@cglschool.org.) Generosity does not come naturally to us because we are sinners. It is far easier to think about ourselves than others. But if we value generosity,

we need to teach it to our children and show them how to give of our time, treasures, and talents. While I was doing the CGLCS Bible study on generosity, this sentence spoke to my heart: “His gives His resources to us to be used to expand His kingdom.” On one chapel envelope this week, a student added these words in pencil, “I love the Lord! PS. He is my saver!” Thank you for encouraging your children to be generous givers at chapel each week. Please pray as a family for the ministry that we are blessing each quarter. Point out other ways that your children can be generous at home, at school, and in their communities with their time, treasures, and talents. Acts 20:35 “… Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”

This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. Hebrews 6:19

ATHLETICS BY KEVIN REINKE

Friday, September 30, concluded our flag football season with the 3rd Annual Staff v. the Students game. Although this annual event has quickly become one of the highlights of the school year, this year’s flag football team was playing together way before this game came into existence. For our six 8th grade boys, being flag football teammates started five years ago for most of them as 4th graders. It is amazing to look back and see how each of the players has grown and developed into the different key roles that make up a complete team. It proved to be the best season yet. The team went undefeated in regular season play and fell just short of a perfect season in the league’s eleven team tournament with a heartbreaking loss in the championship game.

There are so many details and tasks to be completed—it’s easy to lose sight of what really matters. In this 5-part course, Kasey Johnson, speaker and author of “How to Be a S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Mom,” uses each finger to illustrate the five most valuable action words you can use as a parent to connect with your child no matter their age. Kasey Johnson is a teacher, author, speaker, and blogger. Kasey’s passion for education, teaching, and equipping people for success has motivated her to create and share a variety of strategies to help Christian women reach their goals and live lives full of peace and purpose. She is the author of Mom Essentials and 7 Ways To Be A S.M.A.R.T.E.R. Mom. Kasey and her husband, Matt, live in Kansas City with their three sons.

“The Roost” is back in our middle school wing again this year! This is a snack and drink stand available for all CGLS students, staff, and parents after school on Fridays. The Roost is also open to students on Wednesdays during Family Groups. It is located in the back of the middle school wing, at the kitchen area. It is run by the 8th grade class, Ms. Maki, and the students that are in The Roost elective on Tuesday afternoons. The money raised from sales goes to support our 8th graders’ trip to Washington D.C. They have a variety of snacks, drinks, and candy with all prices that are affordable, and ranging from $0.50-$1.50. Come check it out!

Christ : Quality : Community BY DEANIE DANKENBRING Who or what is LSEM? The letters stand for Lutheran Special Education Ministries. The main office is near Detroit, Michigan. The LSEM hires Christian teachers all across the United States to serve in Lutheran Schools. CGLS contracted with the LSEM to hire me. Part of my “journey” here is to conduct a reading assessment three times a year involving grades K-8. Information gathered from that and from the NWEA assessments helps me to identify students who may need some extra support to make their learning more successful. My job allows me to work one-on-one or in small groups with students. I feel that I have the best job ever! Not only do I get to help students succeed, I also get to share the love of Jesus with His lambs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at ddankenbring@cglschool.org. God bless you and your family!

Preschool By Jaci Gloss, Preschool Director

This week, I overheard a preschooler talking to his dad as they were walking out the front doors of the school. He looked up and noticed the colorful stained glass window with the picture of Jesus. Even though this student has been in school for about a month, it was as if he was seeing this window for the very first time. His voice sounded joyful and excited as he said, “Hey dad, that’s Jesus!” He then continued to tell his dad that Jesus lives in our heart. The part of their conversation that made me smile the most was when he also shared “and you know what dad, he lives in our heart and he can’t get out because he loves us!” I love how our littlest students “get it”! They have faith and without question, they know that Jesus loves us unconditionally.

“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:8-9

JOHNNY APPLESEED DAY On September 26, students in first and second grade classes celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day. The teachers planned some fun activities that involved reading, math, and some science, too. Students learned about the life and legend of Johnny Appleseed. They also created crafts and completed apple experiments. The morning wrapped up with bobbing for apples and enjoying some homemade applesauce, made by the students.

It really does matter! By Michael Bean CGLS Tax Credit and Scholarship Director

Some might think it doesn’t matter if they participate in the Tax Credit program. They are doing well and don’t really need help. But many other families are taking a leap of faith, trusting God will provide the needed scholarships to make it through the year. A single tax credit donation can make the difference whether they are able to stay at CGLS. One parent wrote, “I am writing you because I can’t seem to keep my voice steady. I just... saw the FACTS update. We are BEYOND thankful, BEYOND grateful! BEYOND in awe of God’s mercy and grace in all of this! Last week, Journey gained the skill of being able to pray on her own and lead us as a family in prayer! What a BEAUTIFUL joy it is to experience prayer from the lips and hearts of your children! I can’t even express how thankful we are. THIS IS WHY WE ARE HERE! Love, the Stephens” When you participate in ACSTO and recommend the donation be used at Christ’s Greenfield Lutheran School – you do CHANGE LIVES! Tax Credit Scholarship Classes - November 10, 2016 @ 6:30PM and January 10, 2017 @ 6:30PM If you plan to attend please RSVP to sbean@ cglschool.org. Registration allows us to have sufficient packets on hand for all attending. We find that attendees tend to do much better at raising Tax Credit Scholarships than those who miss these classes.

FOUR Families Needed for Tax Credit Sunday - We are looking for four families willing to give a very short parent/child testimonial on Sunday, Nov. 6th at the 7:30am, 9:00am (2 services) and 10:45am church services. Does the Holy Spirit move you to tell your story, so others might be moved to become Christcentered AZ taxpayers? This is a great opportunity to share your love of CGLS and explain how Tax Credit Scholarships make Christian education possible. Please contact Stephanie in the school office for details. Go Team, Go! - ACSTO (acsto.org) funded over $741,000 CGLS scholarships last year. Don’t miss out! Solicit donors, be a donor, attend workshops, pick up brochures in the school office, mail an annual letter to family and friends, and apply for scholarships. This could be your best scholarship year ever. In the last 16 years, ACSTO has funded over 4.9 million in CGLS scholarships. No other STO comes close in customer service and their amazing support of CGLS families. This is why we partner with them. Your mission should you choose to accept it; is to become fully funded in the next two years. We are here to help, so don’t hesitate to ask!

The Ramirez Family When we chose CGLS 6 years ago for our first child entering Kindergarten, I was a stay at home mom with 2 other children at home. My husband is a teacher and as we all know, teachers are not paid what they deserve. We had absolutely no idea how we were going to manage this. And so we took a great leap of faith and said, “If God wants our son here, He will make a way for this to be possible.” And He did. We began slowly by asking family to participate in the school tax credit. We didn’t know all the answers to questions that came up and didn’t always feel comfortable even asking. But we did

anyway. And to our surprise, when he started we still had a small but very manageable monthly payment. Time has gone by and we now have FOUR children attending CGLS, in grades Kindergarten, 2nd, 4th, and 6th. When looking at our tuition bill at the beginning of the year, it can feel daunting. But every year, as we did in our first year, we still ask God to make a way for it to happen. It is not always easy, it takes work. But we have become more knowledgeable in how the tax credit program works. We are no longer hesitant to ask someone to participate and ultimately there is a far greater return for our children

in our efforts. We are abundantly blessed to be able to say all four of our children are nearly completely funded through tax credit dollars. We are happy to talk with anyone who may need help learning more or techniques that have worked for us.
