2018 ANNUAL REPORT
OUR MISSION
MESSAGE FROM KELBY
Christ’s Haven provides a warm, loving, Christian environment in which children in need of basic care can grow physically, emotionally and spiritually. Our goal is to provide love and support for children in need and their families. Our trauma-informed-family-based model of care encourages our children and teens to heal from their past trauma and envision and embrace a bright future. “For 65 years, Christ’s Haven has been a place where God works in the hearts of some of the most vulnerable among us...abandoned, abused, and neglected children. We are honored to be part of God’s provision for these children, and we aspire to honor Him in carrying out His work in their lives. As always, we covet your prayers for our staff, house parents, board, and most importantly for the precious children He entrusts us with.” —Kelby B. Pope, Chairman of the Board of Directors

OUR JOURNEY TO SANCTUARY In 2015 Christ’s Haven began a journey to become a trauma informed community in which children and those who serve them can heal from the wounds that they have endured. Our guide in this journey has been the Sanctuary Institute of Yonkers, New York (www.sanctuaryinstitute.org). Organizations that follow the Sanctuary Model do so to create a trauma informed community in which both their clients and staff may find healing from life’s adverse circumstances. The Sanctuary Model is about cultural change. We have learned the importance of both our children and their caregivers becoming more aware of their emotions and those emotions' influence on behavior and relationships. Our children have been intimately involved in the process through psychological educational trainings, campus community activities, competitions, art projects and games to reinforce what they learn. We have learned the significance around understanding emotions and how those emotions’ influence our behavior and relationships. We received our Sanctuary certification in July 2018 and we are proud of this achievement. This certification was the result of generous financial investments by donors who supported this initiative and thousands of hours of work by our children and staff. Following the Sanctuary Model is a journey not an event.

Our 1st Annual Fashion Show Was a Huge Success!
Our first annual Fashion Show & Luncheon was an incredible success with 150 people in attendance. We look forward to expanding our venue to accommodate more attendees and have additional vendors for an even better shopping experience in 2019.
Antonio, his younger brother Fernando and sister, Catalina came to live at Christ’s Haven in 2015. Antonio had limited communication skills, was behind academically, and could read very little. These three young children have eight other siblings and there wasn’t enough money to feed everyone. Their family placed the three at Christ’s Haven, like so many others before them. Gifts from donors like you not only provided Antonio with houseparents, food and a stable living situation, but for the past two years Antonio has had weekly tutoring. Now Antonio has improved communication skills, is reading on grade level and makes the A-B honor role. In addition, he has run a number of 5k, 10k and 15k races with his mentor, Mr. Bob. Antonio is managing his emotions well and thriving overall.

The children lead chapel most of the time. One of our teen girls talked openly about forgiveness and another on the peace that comes from Jesus Christ. Both talked about their painful histories, what the Lord has done for them, and the
blessing of being at Christ’s Haven.
They prepared these messages on their own and it was powerful to witness. The other kids paid close attention, hanging on every word, and cheering these girls on.

O u r H i s t o ry Christ’s Haven is a dream realized. In the early 1950’s, Homer and Lilian Steadman became acutely aware of the incredible need many children in the Dallas/Fort Worth area had for a safe and loving home. Within one week of opening their home to foster children, the couple found themselves surrounded by ten children. In the months that followed, Homer and Lilian called upon their friends and fellow church members to share in their dream of establishing a Christ-centered campus of homes for abandoned children. In 1958, the first home was opened on an expansive property near Keller, Texas. Surrounded by dirt roads and fields as far as the eye could see, a community began to emerge. Thanks to the Steadman's dream becoming a reality, there is now a community based on love for children and the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.
