Through research of the history and culture of St Petersburg, Russia a concept for a luxury boutique hotel has been created. Reading Letters From St Petersburg, by Victoria Hammond, one becomes immersed in St Petersburg and its inhabitants. The pride, love and illusionary qualities of the culture of St Petersburg are the inspiration for the design of this luxury hotel.

I LLYUZIYA O TEL’ | I LLUSION H OTEL ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

“With its shimmering palaces and decaying mansions, enchanted forests and basements crammed with Soviet art, St Petersburg is a city of ghosts and illusions where past and present, reality and fiction are inextricably fused.” - Victoria Hammond in Letters From St Petersburg

St Petersburg, Russia is a city built on a history of turmoil. The city embodies the shell of an extinguished way of life: of imperial Russia under the rule of the Tzars. Russians have an instinct for storytelling, and a unique ability to beguile their history into a blend of fairy tale, fact, and absurdity. This fascination with blurring the lines of reality are inherent to St Petersburg and have its roots in Peter the Great’s wunderkammer, a cabinet of curiosities and natural wonders; a place full of marvels to be discovered, romantic and mystical. Illyuziya Otel’ will be a space where the combination of classical architecture and vernacular timbers will create an enchanting expression of Russia and St Petersburg specifically. A place where absurd fairy tale and wonderful reality are whimsically blended to evoke a sense of past. Illyuziya Otel’ seeks to promote an essence of the forgotten history blurring the lines of fantasy and reality.

B EREZA R ESTORANE | B IRCH R ESTAURANT ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

Through research of the history and culture of St Petersburg, Russia a concept for a fine dining restaurant in the luxury boutique hotel, Illyuziya Otel’, has been created. The inspiration for the design of this restaurant was derived from the Russian apt for storytelling and the illusionary qualities of their fairytales combined with the immense forestry of the Russian landscape.

Russians have an instinct for storytelling, and a unique ability to beguile their history into a blend of fairy tale, fact, and absurdity. There is a Russian saying, “We make fairy tales a reality. There is one said fairy tale that has its basis in reality. The Enchanted Forest is said to be a kingdom of warm lakes and bright mushrooms, carpets of soft grass and the chiaroscuro of the black pines and white birch trees. In this forest the Rozhestveno, the magical house, stands having survived the revolution and Soviet dictatorship, just as the forest has. This wonderful scenery is wrapped in a dark velvet gloom, mysterious, pervasive, impenetrable. Bereza Restorane has enlivened this enchanted forest and has created an environment where the combination of vernacular timbers and classical forms will create an enchanting expression of Russia’s immense forestry. Bereza Restorane will embody the whimsical baroque forms of foliage in a rich setting that will be illusionary and inviting, a place to step out of the city center into another vernacular of Russia.

L IGHTING D ESIGN WINTER 2012

I LLINOIS I NSTITUTE OF A RT L IBRARY The Illinois Institute of Art at Chicago Library has been redesigned to incorporate a more sustainable and efficient space plan and lighting design. The design will start with a clean canvas, incorporating texture on the ceiling and floor with pops of color in the paint and furniture. This new design creates spaces throughout where students can study and utilize the library traditionally and for groups, study boxes have been created so that students can focus in a team environment.

The lighting design of the School Library starts with linear lighting systems that emit both direct and indirect light. These systems are the general ambient lighting. There is also accent lighting over the seating areas and the entrance with wall washers throughout the space. In order to take advantage of some of the natural daylighting, the east wall is made of mostly floor to ceiling windows. The chosen fixtures installed in the library will have clean lines with contemporary, artistic shapes.

T IMOTHY B. B LACKSTONE L IBRARY CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Built in 1904, the Blackstone Library is a stately Classical Revival-style building designed by Chicago architect Solon S. Beman. It was presented as a gift to the city by Isabel Norton Blackstone in honor of her late husband, Timothy Beach Blackstone, a Chicago railroad executive and philanthropist. It was our team’s task to research the importance of this library in its historic neighborhood and bring sustainable efforts to the rehabilitation of its interior.

The Blackstone Library includes exceptional interior spaces exemplifying the importance of the building in terms of its architecture, style, and design. The entrance vestibule and domed rotunda provide a formal and grand entrance to the interior of the library. The space retains its classical-style floor mosaics, marble walls and columns, and domed ceiling with murals. The building also includes a shelving stack room with a glass-floored mezzanine and large and small reading rooms which retain their historic ornamentation.

The skylights in the reading rooms and rotunda have been restored and bring back the natural daylighting that the library was designed with. The floor of the mezzanine is 1-1/2 thick structural glass slabs designed to allow light to pass through to the lower banks of the structural stacks. Along with restoring the luster of the bronze structural stacks, decorative and ambient light fixtures have been designed to compliment the classical style of the building and bring back some of the features the building once had. Linear LED fixtures have been installed in the heavy molding throughout the space to highlight the ornate ceiling.

The sky-lighted dome of the rotunda is decorated with allegorical murals painted by noted Chicago painter, Oliver Dennett Grover. The murals symbolize the themes of Literature, Science, Labor, and Art.

ENERGY Light fixtures have been retrofitted with LED bulbs that will increase light levels and reduce wattage by as much as 70%. A light control system to manage the correct amount of light has also been installed.

DAY LIGHTING Daylighting encompasses sensitive land-use, energy conservation, the use of healthy materials, and wastereduction; design, technological and mechanical factors; aesthetics and quality of life issues.

CONCRETE Polished concrete benefits align with the economic benefits of green building through reduced operating costs, maintenance, optimized life cycle, and reduced first costs.

PAINT Benjamin Moore’s Natura Interior Paint is VOC free. Natura meets and exceeds both LEED and the Green seal GS-11 standards for chemical content and paint performance.

LANDSCAPING Native and other deep rooted plants help direct rainwater into the soil. Native plants do not require chemical fertilizer or pesticides and can save money in the long-term, while helping the environment.

FURNITURE Through the re-use of materials and furniture in the space, our environmental impact remains small. The new furniture brought in is all local and the manufacturers are committed to sustainable manufacturing.
