DID YOU KNOW?

AN AVERAGE OF 7,000 ANIMALS PER YEAR CARED FOR AND REHOMED THROUGH OUR ADOPTION CENTER

MORE THAN 13,000 SPAY OR NEUTER SURGERIES AT OUR CLINIC SINCE OPENING IN LATE 2016.

ADOPTION, SPAY, NEUTER, AND ANIMAL CONTROL NUMBERS THAT RIVAL SEATTLE, PORTLAND, AND VANCOUVER THOUGH WE HAVE HALF OR A THIRD OF THEIR BUDGETS

$360,000 annual deficit

THE LANDSCAPE UPON ARRIVAL

Ongoing concerns about sanitation and health

Significant overpopulation issues in the community and in both our facilities Breed restrictions in numerous cities making equitable care extremely challenging An organization of well-meaning advocates with skill gaps in business, fundraising, marketing, and logistics management A board that was having to do too much heavy-lifting in day-to-day operations

Eliminated the annual deficit through new efficiencies, increased partnerships, and a focus on increased earned and contributed revenue

Combatted sanitation and health concerns by increasing sanitation staff, adding one closed day weekly for deep cleaning, and creating medical rounds to expedite attention for any concerns

SIX MONTHS LATER

We are working to balance the overpopulation issues in the community and in both our facilities with a more aggressive foster program and transfer program

We successfully advocated for the removal of breed restrictions in order to allow us provide equitable care regardless of breed

We have been and are augmenting our staff to close skill gaps and make sure our compassionate business is run‌ like a business

With the above staff restructure, we were able to clarify the role of the board and get the highly capable group back to the governing body the mission needs and deserves

With the addition of a second vet, we now have medical rounds twice a week facilitated by our medical director with a team of animal care staff shadowing. This ensures a more immediate response to animal health concerns.

New tracking sheets have been implemented to more closely monitor overall animal health and experience.

the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.

In addition to Fitz splitting her time between facilities, Jason and I are at the Adoption Center on Mondays and Thursday. It has been a wonderful way to create cohesion and provide a deeper understanding of overall operational needs. Our new front desk person will eventually be named Shelter Manager to mirror the staff structure at the Clinic. She is also a combination of three roles: front desk, pet marketing, and animal transfers. Our ASPCA grant contact will be with us TOMORROW to shadow and strengthen our sanitation processes and to discuss our pending grant opportunities.

NEW INITIATIVES!

TELLING TAILS A literacy program bringing third graders into our facility for teacher-led sessions of kids reading to pets. The literature will align with state education guidelines so as to improve reading and comprehension and to offer socialization for pets along as well as brief animal care sessions for all students to learn animal welfare basics. The program allows us to include younger communities in our advocacy efforts while also making sure we are a good community partner solving expressed community challenges while tending to our own needs.

TITLE SPONSORSHIP AVAILABLE $7,500 DAY / CLASSROOM SPONSORS $500

HUMANE ADVOCATES This program is made up of brief afternoon sessions presented in a summer camp style format which provide the basics of animal welfare to youth up to age 12. We piloted the program in September 2018 and will be continuing the program in warm weather months in 2019. If you’d be interested in sponsoring or providing tuition scholarships for students in under-resourced communities, we would love to hear from you!

THE PETSAFE PROJECT A new initiative in partnership with local domestic violence programs, the PetSafe Project offers kennel space or temporary foster homes for the pets of survivors of domestic violence. Studies indicate that many survivors of domestic abuse stayed in their abusive situation because they didn’t know how to manage pet transition or transfer. We meet that challenge by offering a free, safe, and anonymous service to bring all members of the family to safety.
