Best K-12 Teacher: Jerrilyn Gilmore, Olympic Elementary School
Still Making a Difference After 39 Years By Victoria Stewart
Jerrilyn Gilmore
For The Chronicle
For beloved teacher Jerrilyn Gilmore, a fourth-grade teacher at Chehalis for the past 39 years, her most cherished time is working with the students in her classroom. “It’s the most amazing part of working with fourth graders,” she said. “The excitement of 10-year-olds and how eager they are to learn, and how they are maturing and becoming hard workers and learning to be organized and proud of themselves.” Gilmore is delighted with how many of the current students in her class are the children of the parents she also taught. “I haven’t had anyone come in yet and tell me ‘you had my granny or my grandpa’ yet!” she laughed. The hardest part of the job for Gilmore is “every year, after you’ve been together all year and bonded and cared for each other and worked hard for each other and then you get to hug all those boys and girls and say, ‘Be strong and do good next year’ and you think, ‘I will never love another class as much as I loved this one.’ And then I do! And the truth is, never once in 39 years did I not love and care for and want to work them hard each year. But you do get a little melancholy toward the end of the year, yet you are excited for them to go on. And, they do come back year after year to check on you!”
Family: Married to husband Timothy Gilmore, also a teacher, for 37 years. Two grown children Education: Washington State University Residence: Centralia Years working in this field: 39
Runners-up:
Jerrilyn Gilmore’s visits to ballet dances, piano recitals and baseball games show her students how much she cares.
Gilmore said there are many things that make a teacher a good teacher, and most of it is not particularly knowing so much more than the students do. “The most important thing is showing them you value the relationship, that you care about them. Because they don’t really care how much you know
or want to teach them,” she said. “But going to their sporting events, their piano recitals, their ballet dances and quite a few baseball games — they are just thrilled to death when you show up there and they say, ‘Man, it’s Mrs. Gilmore! And she’s in the field!” While Gilmore knew she wanted

to be a teacher, she had no real idea of what a wonderful choice she had made — until she pauses to look back. “I knew I would love working with children, but I never dreamed I would find my niche and I believe, after 39 years, I feel like I can make a difference,” she said.

Best Sports Coach: Bob Wollan, W.F. West football
Winning Life’s Battles, On and Off the Field By Victoria Stewart
Bob Wollan
For The Chronicle
Sports in one form or another has been a lifelong passion for Bob Wollan, W.F. West High School football coach and Lewis County’s best sports coach winner. Wollan attributes many life lessons to participation in sports and the coaches who worked with him through the years. “I think some of the real mentors I had, besides my dad, were coaches,” Wollan said. “The coaches were my big influences in my life and had a huge impact on my life.” Some of Wollan’s own coaches still teach and coach to this day. “They inspired me to want to go down that path,” he said. Some of the best parts of his job include “just dealing with kids every day. It’s fun and never a dull moment. It keeps you on our toes.” He laughed and said the hardest part of his job is also dealing with kids. And then he said, with all seriousness, “I think the hardest part is seeing kids who don’t have a real big support network and are fighting a battle on their own.” These are the student athletes who show up for practice and games and no one comes to watch or to encourage them. Wollan tries to make sure he steps in and serves as the support system for these kids by “just trying to be there for them.” A support system is also what makes a good coach.
Runners-up: Josh Fay (Napavine High School Football), Jeremy Hoyt (Twin Cities Youth Football),Ken Olsen (Centralia
“It starts with the people you surround yourself with: your assistant coaches and support network, all the way from the school administration to the teachers and coaches you work with,” he said. Another aspect is really being able to tailor-make coaching oppor-

Wollan always tries to impart some of life’s lessons to his athletes. “Do the very best you can do (in school and life) and things will take care of themselves. Not ever day is going to be a great day, but the kids who persevere will be successful not just in athletics, but in life.”

Best Preacher: Mark Fast, Centralia Community Church of God
Great Pastoral Care Is a Family Tradition By Victoria Stewart
Mark Fast
For The Chronicle
It goes almost without saying that Mark Fast is a busy man. Not only do the Centralia native and his wife have three young and active children, he has taken on an additional family — the congregation of the Centralia Community Church of God. Fast, the church’s senior pastor, said the best of his job is “working with people and doing team ministry with my leaders and the people within our church.” Unlike some young people, Fast knew early in life he wanted to get into ministry. After graduating from Centralia High School in 1988, he attended Warner Pacific College in Portland where he received degrees in religion and Christian ministry, as well as business administration. “I felt God calling me to full-time ministry midway through my college experience,” Fast said. He first turned his attention to serving as an associate pastor in worship for the next 10 years in Spokane. Then he was overjoyed to help “plant a brand new church in Renton where I pastored for five and a half years” before making his way back full circle to serve in Centralia. This calling was not out of the blue for Fast, whose uncle, Darcy Fast, led Centralia Community Church of God for many years. “I also grew up in a pastor’s family and that gave me some insight into the calling and responsibilities,” Mark Fast said.
708 Harrison Ave., Centralia
Some of those responsibilities can be difficult at times, he said. “The hardest part of pastoring (is) coming alongside people in difficult circumstances,” Fast said. He often works with members of his congregation who are struggling with personal issues, family issues, death and many of the other trials and tribulations

of daily life. Another difficult aspect can be trying to figure out how to deal with a “variety of personalities,” Fast said. And sometimes, Fast has to confront issues head on-in an effort to help people face difficult truths and grow. Of course, all of these aspects of his job are what a pastor lives for and loves
to do. A good preacher, Fast said, “takes the truth of the Bible and applies it to people’s everyday lives in a way that challenges them to live it out (in a practical way).” And the most important part of being a good pastor? “Leading with vision and caring for people,” he said.

Best bartender: Julie Young, Dicks Brewery
Best Bartender Carries on Family Tradition
By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
For Julie Young, Chronicle readers’ choice for best bartender, the best part of her job is “the customers,” she said. “Making new friends. And the beer,” she added with a laugh. Young is the owner of Dicks Brewery, a brewing business founded by her father, Dick Young, who died suddenly two years ago. Julie Young keeps her father’s dream alive every day and it is a labor of love and passion for her. “We are mainly a Runners-up: brewing warehouse and facility and we Chris Bruce, open it up one day Alicia King a week to serve beer for four hours,” she said. Brewery tours and beer sampling takes place Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. and that is when and where Young dons her bartender hat. Young also owns and manages her father’s original business, Northwest Sausage and Deli, a retail location north of Centralia on Prather Road where they smoke meal and serve food in a popular restaurant. The hardest part of the job for Young, she said, is juggling her roles as a server, bartender, bookkeeper and manager. “It’s a lot of wearing of a lot of different hats. I take it one day a time,” she said. It goes without saying Young enjoys beer. Her favorite is IPA. Camping and spending time with her children, family

Brandy Mauel-Fay
For The Chronicle
Brandy Mauel-Fay has a hard time picking out a favorite facet of her career as a veterinarian “There are so many parts to my job that make me want to get up and do it again,” she said. “The number one answer is Runners-up: puppies and kittens. Dr. Chris Affeldt, And the one thing I love Dr. Bob Remund about being a vet is I am the other family doctor. I love the fact I get to interact with people as much as animals.” With the fun come moments of sadness when she has to say goodbye to her patients. “The whole issue of euthanasia has always been tough for me, but it is an important part of the job and over the years I’ve learned to deal with it a little bit better. I grieve as much as my clients

Mauel-Fay grew up on a farm working with large animals. “Originally I thought I was going to be a cow vet, then I realized I wanted to come back to Lewis County and there aren’t the big ranches here. And I also quickly realized I was very sensitive.” That sensitivity pays off when working with smaller animals as opposed to serving as a working ranch vet. Being a veterinarian is something she has known she wanted to do since she was 5 years old. “It is the culmination of a 20-year dream and I never wavered,” she said.

Best Dentist: Dr. Steven Ash
Best Dentist Sees Blessings in His Job Runners-up:

For 33 years, Dr. Steven Ash has served the Lewis County community as a dentist, making him the readers’ favorite for Best Dentist. “Dentistry is so much fun,” said Ash. “Imagine working with a great dentist and partner (referring to his partner, Dr Brian Roberts), an awesome staff, and for some of the nicest people in the county. Then imagine having the opportunity to practice in a field where you can change someone’s life by helping them with their self-image, ability to enjoy their favorite foods, comfort and peace of mind.” Along with all of those wonderful facets of his career, Ash said, is the knowledge that dental care protects so many of the body’s big organs from deterioration, preventing many other

The job remains challenging with the opportunity to continually grow in knowledge with changing technology and “tapping into cutting edge developments like implants, CAD/ CAM dentistry, digital imaging and decay prevention.” A large part of his job as a dentist is to “treat everyone fairly and with respect, just like you would want your family members treated. In fact, whenever I am helping someone decide on the
best treatment choice, I simply imagine what I would do for my wife, kids, mom or brothers. That makes doing the right thing easy. I also believe in fun and laughter. That’s what you do when you are passionate about life, work and in the presence of people you love.” His faith in God plays a large role in Ash’s life as a dentist. “Knowing that God loves me, and is “working all things for good” keeps me anchored, he said.

Best Politician: Richard DeBolt
DeBolt Finds Inspiration in Needs of Community
Runners-up:
By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
Lewis County Commissioner Bill Schulte, Centralia Mayor Harlan Thompson
For popular lawmaker Richard DeBolt, wanting to solve problems in his community was what drove him into the political arena. “I saw there were a bunch of issues going on in our community and I wanted to work on them,” he said. Disappointed and not getting the answers he wanted, DeBolt realized he would have to take that extra step and work on the issues directly to really make a difference. DeBolt currently serves as the House Republican Leader, having been first elected to the Legislature in 1996. He represents the 20th Legislative District. Some of his ability to help comes from his broad range of understanding. “I understand the business community and the nonprofit community, and how people need to work and keeping those connections,” he said.
Richard DeBolt leads the Republicans in the state House of Representatives. He was first elected to the Legislature in 1996.

Best photographer: Alison Clinton, Horizon Photo
Photographer Got Hooked on Job as a Teen By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
Alison“Ali”Clinton is the fourth owner of Horizon Photo and the first woman. “I have a joke that I have the only job where it is good when I make people cry,” she said of her photos taken at weddings and other important gatherings.
A career in photography allows for sharing other people’s lives. The best part of Lewis County’s favorite photographer’s job is “being able to be a part of so many people’s special moments: their weddings, babies, family gatherings,” she said. “I have a joke that I have the only job where it is good when I make people cry. I know I am doing something really special for them and their family that they will cherish for years to come.” The hardest part of her job, Clinton said, is being “on the computer so much. With digital, I wish I could be out shooting more. But really, there isn’t a whole lot I don’t like about my job. It is a lot of non-personal work when on the computer.” What makes a good photographer, she said, is “being personal and
patient, and having fun with people and making people relax. People don’t usually enjoy having their photos taken. Clicking with people is key to getting good expressions. And you need to be passionate about your work and working very hard. Anybody can have a camera, but you also have to have an eye, too.” Clinton got into photography suddenly and unexpectedly.

Best chiropractor: Dr. John Stiltner
We are happy to serve you.
Chiropractor Offers Option Beyond Surgery By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
For Dr. John Stiltner, Lewis County readers’ choice for best chiropractor, reducing pain in his patients is handsdown the best part of his job. And yet conversely, being unable to help people is the hardest part. “Sometimes the really hardest part would be the patient who has a complex problem that requires medical and chiropractic to work together to help them through their pain,” he said. For a chiropractor to do his or her job well, Stiltner said, “You have to have a heartfelt desire to help people with their physical incapacities.” As an athlete in school, it was natural for Stiltner to turn to chiropractic medicine to maintain physical well being. He appreciated “the connection between athleticism and the natural approach to dealing with sprains and strains.” Stiltner was also greatly influenced first by a mentor, then a college. Dr. Ron Knutsen, a long-time chiropractor in the area, persuaded Stiltner to go to the Palmer School of Chiropractic in Iowa — which is where this branch of the medical field was born.
Dr. John Stiltner, D.C. Age: 59 Family: Married to wife Gail for 35 years. Two daughters and two grandchildren. Education: Attended Centralia College then Palmer Chiropractic College. Residence: Centralia Years working in this field: 35 years Address: 1218 Harrison Ave, Centralia
Runners-up: Dr. Real McGraw, Dr. Scott Moeckle
One of the main reasons to seek chiropractic care, he said, is to have another option be-
yond surgery. “It is important for people to have another conservative approach to dealing with back pain,” he said. He commonly treats soft tissue damage and misalignment of the spine, and notes approximately 90 percent of all Americans will seek some kind of back care in their lifetime. “My main philosophy is to be sensitive to the needs of people when they are sick and to help them through it in any capacity,” he said.

Best massage: Cindy Moyer, Chehalis Massage Clinic
‘Massage Does Not Have to Hurt’ By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
“What I love about my job,” said Cindy Moyer, Lewis County’s choice for best massage therapist, “is relieving people’s pain. It is tremendously rewarding to have someone tell me, “You are the first person who could get rid of that knot in my shoulder.” or “I was having injections to treat these headaches and now they’re gone”. The couple raised four children before he died. She found “wonderful” again. “I married wonderful Gordon Bill whom I also met in high school,” she said. “We work the business together, selling wholesale around the country and retail when we can. Dixie Rogerson-Bill, a renowned artist and Centralia native, says this on her website: “After painting representationally for many years, the strength of value, color and design began to take over, eliminating detail to bring about a stronger statement. My work is always changing, always a surprise. My drawings, paintings, sculpture and enamelings come (on the most part) from inner-creativity ... my mind’s visual aides.” Rogerson-Bill always drew as a child before taking on oils at a young age. She describes herself as a “disciplined, dedicated artist.” The best sort of artist, she said, “is creative and dedicated. I was born with the desire to be an artist. As a child I was creating things out of cardboard and newspaper, (and) I have been painting for over 60 years.” To have been chosen best artist, she said, “That’s a great honor — wow.” Her favorite part of working with art and people is “to be able to create and touch people with my art.” Her art is often described as playful and whimsical. Best Doctor: Dr. Jennifer Polley, Northwest Pediatric Center
Best Doctor Has Knowledge, Compassion, Humility By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
For Dr. Jennifer Polley, the best part of her job is “being with kids of any age — teenagers or babies, and their families.” The hardest part of working with children comes with the territory of being a doctor: dealing with sick children who are suffering, and seeing the chil- Runners-up: dren who not only have to suffer medi- Dr. Charles McGill, cally, but in their own Dr. Chris Yarter families as well. “Sometimes seeing kids that maybe don’t have someone who really believes in them and values them,” Polley said, can be among the most difficult tasks she faces. “And the other hard part is dealing with children who have really difficult medical issues, who are medically fragile. There is a whole lot for families to go through and the parents do a wonderful job. But knowing there is so much heartache in the world, it is hard to see kids caught up in that.”
There is a lot more than meets the eye to serving as a doctor, Polley said. “What makes a good doctor is a combination: you have to have knowledge and be up to date, and you also have to know when you don’t know something. You have to have humility. And above all, you have to be compassionate and willing to listen to what people’s needs really are, beyond what’s on the surface. They might come in for a headache and that may be a simple issue, but there may be many other layers going on.” In medicine, Polley said, “You have the opportunity to really listen and simply by listening, you can lighten someone’s load. We might not have all the answers in the rush of modern medicine; many have lost the ability to listen.” Polley didn’t set out to be a physician but found, partway through a French degree, that medicine gave her what she wanted. “It’s a wonderful combination of academics and also being able to be in a special relationship with people and feel good about what you do.”

Best Centralia College instructor: Chris Bailey
Departing Best Instructor Will Stay Connected By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
For Chris Bailey, Lewis County’s best college instructor, student success is the best part of his job. With 22 years under his belt teaching business and real estate law at Centralia College, Bailey recently took a new position as president of Lower Colum- Runners-up: bia College start- Mike Driscoll, ing this September, Greg Garman, but through Aug. Karen Grefe 31 will continue at Centralia College as the vice president of human resources and legal affairs. He will also continue to teach a regional leadership development program for faculty and staff at Centralia College, Grays Harbor College, South Puget Sound Community College, and LCC.
“Hearing back from an individual who has been inspired to go to law school or get into business partly because of the classes I taught — that is the highlight of any teacher.” Chris Bailey
College instructor
The favorite part of his time in the classroom is connecting with former students who are making plans to pursue future careers in law or business. “Hearing back from an individual who has been inspired to go to law school or get into business partly because of the classes I taught — that is the highlight of any teacher,” Bailey said.

And Bailey absolutely loves being contacted to be used as a reference. “I have had students contact me after 15 years to use me as a reference as they are moving up the chain of success and that’s always an big uplifting experience. It means I mattered in their life and helped them in some small way with their success. And that’s as good as it gets.” But then ... ”Grading!” he said with a laugh, is the hardest part of his job.
“Grading takes time and sometimes it can be very mundane and takes a lot of hours. People don’t realize how much time grading takes. I don’t mind the prep work and I love being in class, but the grading is always the difficult part.” A good college instructor, Bailey said, “is concerned about the students.” Bailey became known to the community in 1988 when he ran for the Legislature and narrowly lost. “I met a lot of people and that opened doors for me,” he said. One of those doors was going to work at Centralia College. And he loved it. That is also Bailey’s best advice to his students: “Do what you love, because you are going to be good at it. Follow your bliss and your work is a lot more fun and it’s not really work.”

Best wait person: Jim Wheeler, Boccata
‘Life Is Too Short to Eat Bad Food’
By Victoria Stewart For The Chronicle
For Jim Wheeler, Lewis County’s best wait person, the customers are the most enjoyable part of his job. “The customers — everyone who comes in is gracious and wonderful, and are like an extension of our family here (at Boccata),” he said. The hardest part of the job for Wheeler is also the part at which he is also most skilled. “When we get really busy, balancing Runners-up: 10 different things Alicia Hoyt, at once, there is so Joy Smith much multi-tasking required. That’s the hardest part but also the most satisfying,” he said. “When everybody leaves and they have had a good time and they didn’t really know what pressure you were working under. Whatever you were under (stress) didn’t affect their dining experience.” What makes a good wait person is anticipation. “Knowing what a customer needs before they ask for it. Being prepared and knowing every ingredient that is in the food you serve and how long it takes to cook — are they in a hurry?” he said. “And, if you hear a fork drop on the other side of the room, it’s a good idea to take a fork and go see who dropped one.” Wheeler always enjoyed the restaurant business. “I always loved cooking,” he said. “Knowing how to do every job in a restaurant and be prepared to do it all every day” is key. He enjoys being able to cook at Boccata as well as serve and wash dishes, sweep floors and the sidewalk, and making sure “the restaurant runs smoothly. The whole point of food service is to see the customer has a good experience.” He laughed and added, “Life is too short to eat bad food.”
Jim Wheeler Age: 44 Family: Two wonderful dogs Education: Highline Community College Residence: Centralia Years working in this field: A lifetime. “Ever since I got out of the military I’ve always worked in restaurants or bars.” Address: 405 N. Tower Avenue, Centralia, Boccata Deli & Market
