Although we are still not perfect in many ways and we must admit that there is still a long way to go to achieve the ultimate goal of being a developed country, we must not take for granted what we have achieved but to further strengthen the ties and understanding among our diversity. Today we must not only preach respect, understanding and tolerance but each and every one should foster acceptance, understand and respect for the benefit of the country and our future generations. As we work towards a greater height, it is important for us to recognize the many people and organisations that have invested much time and effort into making the Malaysian dream a reality. From education, medical, and business sectors to the arts, philanthropy and tourism, Malaysia would not have come this far within the past century without Malaysians working towards developing this great nation of ours.

PRE It was a proud moment when Tunku Abdul Rahman raised his right hand and declared our independence with enthusiastic shouts of Merdeka! It was the end of colonialism; our forefathers finally had a place to call their own, and this marked the beginning of a beautiful country called Malaysia. Malaysia – a country that was made possible through the struggles and unity of the Malays, Chinese and Indians for having their own identity that they are proud of. All cheered on that day as they could tell the world that they were Malaysians and were no longer treated as second or third class citizens from another country. Malaysians then were united and they understood the meaning of living in peace through respect and acceptance. Today, while most of us are still proud to call ourselves Malaysians, it seems that some have forgotten how Malaysia was built. Some extreme fractions are taking the opportunity to create ambiguity, if not chaos, to achieve personal agendas through the pretence of protecting their rights. Although old, this tactic usually works as seen in some countries around the world that have experienced chaos through the call of change. Modern history has yet to show convincing evidence that forced change can guarantee a better future. Change for the better is no doubt the wish for all, but can there be a perfect change when the people cannot even look beyond skin colours and beliefs?

EFACE This is why at CHTNetwork, we strive in our own small way to bring together individuals and organisations not only within Malaysia but from around the world that have in one way or another contributed to the success stories of Malaysia, reminding us that it is not hatred and selfishness that brought us to where we are today. We believe that each and every one of us has a duty to protect and preserve what our forefathers sacrificed and not to sacrifice others for the interest of certain groups. Malaysia was built with a vision. The day was 31st August 1957 when those of different races and various religions came together as one nation. Our blood may flow from various roots and our forefathers may be from different countries but today we are all Born Malaysia, Proud to be Malaysian.

The British were forced to surrender on 15 February 1942, leaving Japan to occupy the whole of Malaya. He was widely known as Tunku and was also called Bapa Kemerdekaan or Bapa Malaysia for his role in freeing Malaysia from British colonisation and for uniting the peninsula Malaya with Sabah and Sarawak to form Malaysia. TUN ABDUL RAZAK HUSSEIN AL-HAJ (11 March 1922 – 14 January 1976) He was elected into office on 22 September 1970 and led the country until 14 January 1976 when he passed away due to leukemia. He was the one to set up the Barisan Nasional to replace the Alliance Party and was renowned for launching the Malaysian New Economic Policy (MNEP). He held the helm until 16 July 1981 when he retired from active politics due to health concerns. He was best known as the Prime Minister who stressed on the issue of unity through policies that are aimed at correcting economic imbalances between communities. TUN DR MAHATHIR MOHAMAD (Born 10 July 1925) He succeeded Tun Hussein Onn on 16 July 1981 and to date, he is the longest serving Prime Minister in Malaysia for holding that post for 22 years before he handed over office to his successor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on 31 October 2003. In the decades under his leadership, the country saw rapid modernization and economic growth where a series of bold infrastructure projects were initiated. Wawasan 2020 was his brainchild that was announced in 1991 with the aim of Malaysia becoming a fully developed country by the year 2020. Other projects brought in by him included the Multimedia Super Corridor, the Formula One Grand Prix and the controversial Bakun Dam in Sarawak. TUN ABDULLAH AHMAD BADAWI (Born 26 November 1939) Informally known as Pak Lah, Tun Abdullah succeeded Tun Dr Mahathir as the Prime Minister on 31 October and led the country’s government until he stepped down as UMNO president and Prime Minister in 2009. When he took over office, he promised a clamp down on corruption, thus empowering anti-corruption agencies and providing more avenues for the public to expose corruption. He also advocated Islam Hadhari and revived the agricultural sector. He is also instrumental in the successful free trade agreement with Japan that opens up both countries to trade all industrial goods and most agricultural, forestry and fishery products without tariffs. He took the brunt of the massive losses suffered by Barisan Nasional in the 2008 General Elections and following calls from within his party asking him to step down, he graciously stepped down and handed over the reins to his deputy, Dato’ Seri Mohammad Najib Abdul Razak. DATO’ SERI MOHAMMAD NAJIB ABDUL RAZAK (Born 23 July 1953) The current Prime Minister took over office on 3 April 2009 with a focus on domestic economic issues and political reform. He introduced the 1Malaysia campaign that emphasizes on ethnic harmony, national unity and efficient governance with eight values; perseverance, a culture of excellence, acceptance, loyalty, education, humility, integrity and meritocracy. He also started the implementation of a Government Transformation Programme to improve the quality of public services, efficiency and transparency. The government also starts using the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to hold ministers accountable for their work. A New Economic Model was unveiled to double the per capita income in Malaysia while an Economic Transformation Programme was implemented to speed Malaysia towards a Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad

high income country by 2020.

PILLARS

SOVEREIGNTY When Malaya obtained independence from the British, the nation’s leaders were a shining beacon of the new era; the takeover of power from the British was carried out peacefully. The formation of the Federation of Malaysia was also marked by its peaceful transition. However, a mere 12 years after independence and a short six years after the formation of Malaysia, the nation was rocked by the racial riots of 13 May 1969. The delicate racial unity that was the key to the nation’s success was shaken following the riots and the government took immediate measures to restore the peace and unity and inculcate love and loyalty to the country. A special committee was formed to formulate a national ideology that would serve as a guideline to Malaysia’s nation-building efforts. After analysing the events that led up to the unfortunate event and

Red, blue, white and yellow. Thus waves proudly Malaysia’s emblematic national flag. The Jalur Gemilang, which translates as ‘Stripes of Glory’ is a symbol of the nation’s sovereignty. As the nation celebrated her 40th anniversary of independence, the then Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad named the flag Jalur Gemilang on 31 August 1997.

BLOSSOM of

PRIDE

A variety of the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, the red five-petal flower was declared a national symbol and the National Flower of Malaysia by Tunku Abdul Rahman on 28 July 1960. In Malay, hibiscus is called bunga raya, bunga meaning flower and raya meaning celebration. A popular flower in local ceremonies and found in many gardens and homes, Malaysians across the board call the flower by its Malay name. As a symbol of the nation, the blossom appears on the Malaysian coins and ringgit bills, as well as the national coat of arms. Its five petals symbolise the five principles of the Rukunegara, and the bright red tinge of the flower represents ‘the political and economic strength and stability as well as courage and bravery in times of adversity’.

MONUMENTING

MALAYSIA

Over the course of years, many brave people have shed blood and sacrificed themselves for the national cause. The National Monument, or Tugu Negara, is a sculpture commemorating the brave souls who perished in Malaya’s fight for freedom, who defended the nation against the invading Japanese during World War II and who stood to oppose the rise of communism within our nation. Tugu Negara depicts a troupe of seven soldiers in battle atop an oblong base. The seven soldiers symbolise seven qualities: courage, leadership, unity, vigilance, strength, suffering, and vigilance. At the centre of the sculpture, the top most figure holds the Jalur Gemilang; he is flanked by two soldiers on his left and right. Both these figures are armed, with the soldier on the left armed with a machine gun and the one on the right carries a rifle and a bayonet. On the oblong granite base of the monument, the Malaysian coat of arms is depicted in between inscriptions in English and Jawi that read:

Dedicated To The Heroic Fighters In The Cause Of Peace And Freedom May The Blessing Of Allah Be Upon Them The monument sits on a concrete island surrounded by water and fountains. Commissioned by Tunku Abdul Rahman and designed by the Austrian sculptor Felix de Weldon, the Tugu Negara is the world’s tallest freestanding bronze sculpture grouping, standing at 15 metres tall. It was officiated by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong IV on 6 February 1966.

MALAYSIA The rich tapestry of Malaysia’s diverse cultural make up has very much influenced the nation’s various art forms, be it traditional or contemporary. So ingrained is this multiculturalism in the lives of Malaysians that the Malaysian art has the distinction of being a unique one that reflects influences from different parts of the world. While the Malaysian art form is numerous and varied, only a few share a limelight on the national and international arena. Here are some of the better known local traditional art.

CHINGAY The first ever Chingay performance in Malaysia took place during 1919 in Penang as part of a religious procession. Over time, however, Chingay has adapted into the rich diversity of Malaysia and became a shared cultural performance that is uniquely Malaysian; so much that it is common to see Chinese, Malay and Indian Chingay practitioners performing side-by-side. Incorporating some acrobatic stunts, performers balance a tall bamboo pole measuring up to 30 feet that has a giant triangular flag of approximately 25 feet in length.

LION DANCE When the Chinese came to Malaysia, they brought along their colourful traditions and customs, including the festive celebration of Chinese New Year. One of the highlights of this festival is the energetic and highly entertaining Lion Dance. Legend has it that in ancient China, a wild beast called ‘Nian’ would terrorise villagers on the eve of the New Year. Only loud noises and the mighty lion could frighten the beast away. To commemorate the incident, dancers in red and gold costumes would perform acrobatic stunts with a big, terrifying lion face, accompanied by the beating of the drums and loud firecrackers. Today, the Lion Dance is a main fixture in Malaysia and even performed at major national events.

NGAJAT A dance of the Ibans of Sarawak, this indigenous dance is also known as ‘The Warrior Dance’ because the dance used to be performed by the fearsome head-hunters upon their return from battles. The head-hunters were the Iban’s most victorious warriors. Wearing elaborate headdresses and wielding long shields with ornate carvings, the male dancers of Ngajat perform a series of steps in straight lines and circles, punctuated with dramatic leaps and jumps to create a spellbinding dance. In recent years, the Ngajat is performed by the Ibans during the harvest festival of Gawai as well as part of the welcoming ceremony of important guests to their longhouses.

NEW ECONOMIC POLICY The Malaysian government launched the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971. Its goal was to reduce absolute poverty among all Malaysians irrespective of race through raising income levels and increasing employment opportunities, as well as restructuring the society to correct economic imbalances in order to reduce and eliminate the identification of race with economic function. The socio-economic imbalance that plagued the young federation was the division of the people according to their ethnicity, a legacy of the British colonial system. The Malays were concentrated in their traditional villages, focusing mainly on agricultural activities, while the Chinese dominated Malaysian commerce. Educated Indians took up professional roles such as doctors or lawyers, while the less well-off worked the plantations. The rapidly growing economy of Malaysia served as an important fodder for the NEP and increasing the economic opportunities for the poor to enable them to move out of poverty and to participate in the mainstream economic activities. In addition, it also ensured that distribution did not take place from the reallocation of existing wealth but from expanding new sources of wealth. The implementation of the strategies to eradicate poverty and restructure the society resulted in a significant improvement in income distribution by 1990. The proportion of households living below the poverty line income declined from 49.3 per cent in 1970 to 16.5 per cent in 1990 and reduced further to 5.1 per cent in 2002.

The elimination of tariffs and import duties saw producers and manufacturers buying raw materials at a cheaper price and better quality from ASEAN countries. As a result, Malaysia saw an increase in FDI, which contributed to the growth of manufacturing in the country. Between 2003 and 2008, Malaysia raked in the third highest FDI amongst the ASEAN members, bringing in 11.9% of the total FDI. The same feat was repeated again in 2010, as well as 2011 with an impressive US$12 billion. Malaysia was also the fifth-largest source of FDI in Asia, with its outflows reaching US$15 billion according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

‘Vision 2020 A far view Not a dream but reality Together we achieve it’

Wawasan 2020 is a slogan-cum-ideal that was introduced by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1991 during the tabling of the Sixth Malaysia Plan. The slogan, which translates to ‘Vision 2020’ in English, was introduced by the government to empower the citizens of Malaysia to work towards transforming the nation into a developed, self-sufficient industrialised nation by the year 2020. In order to achieve the status of an industrialised and a

fully developed nation, Malaysia has to sustain growth at 7 per cent per annum over a period of 30 years (from 1991 to 2020), as well as initiate structural changes in the economy and within the manufacturing sectors. To achieve this, it was tabulated that the nation as a whole has to overcome these nine strategic challenges:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Establishing a united Malaysia made up of a single and unified Bangsa Malaysia Creating a psychologically liberated, secure and developed Malaysian society Fostering and developing a mature democratic society Establishing a fully moral and ethical society Establishing a matured liberal and tolerant society Establishing a scientific and progressive society Establishing a fully caring society Ensuring an economically just society, in which the is a fair and equitable distribution of the wealth of the nation

9. Establishing a prosperous society with an economy that is fully competitive, dynamic, robust and resilient.

The inaugural CHT Awards & Ball by CHTNetwork was held on 31 October 2008. In a lavish gala ceremony with the theme of ‘Heaven in Penang’, the Grand Ballroom of the legendary Eastern & Oriental Hotel was transformed into a celestial paradise. As invited guests streamed into the ballroom in grand style, they were greeted by lovely ladies in white, complete with luscious ‘angel wings’. With the crème de la crème of Malaysia’s high society and a healthy sprinkling of specially invited guests from Singapore, this event saw sponsor JaegerLeCoultre showcasing its divine timepieces and jewellery. Giving the guests an exceptional treat was an exclusive fashion show by the local designer extraordinaire Calvin Thoo. In its first edition, the CHT Awards was known as the ‘CHT essenze Award’. A total of seven awards were given out. Besides the name, the format of this first edition of the CHT Awards & Ball gala ceremony was also slightly different. Sharing the limelight with the ‘CHT essenze Award’ was the ‘CHT INPenang Award’ with CHTNetwork presenting the seven awards to outstanding organisations in Penang.

In 2008, George Town – along with the city of Malacca – were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. An instrumental force behind George Town’s inscription was the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT), a registered tax-exempt, NGO that actively promotes the conservation of Penang’s built and living heritage as well as encouraging cultural education about the history and heritage of Penang. It was the PHT that initiated George Town’s listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Monitoring the development sites in Penang, PHT has been constantly on the lookout for shady operations that are not only potentially harmful to the people, but also to the environment and cityscape of Penang.

2009 Mystical Adventure Penang's biggest and most anticipated social event of 2009 – CHTNetwork Awards and Ball 2009 – was held on 1 August. With the theme, ‘Mystical Adventure’, the event transported guests into the realm of imagination, taking them on a breath-taking, mystifying and magical journey. The air of mysticism was cunningly created by transforming the elegant Grand Ballroom of Malaysia’s grand dame, Eastern & Oriental Hotel, into a dark and mysterious cave with giant spiders, slithering snakes and mysterious white mist. Graced by Tengku Sulaiman Shah, the Tengku Panglima Di Raja Selangor, the guest list of CHTNetwork Awards and Ball 2009 read like a ‘who's who’ of Malaysia’s elite, including socialites, celebrities and philanthropists. Adding to the ensemble were guests who flew in especially for the occasion lending an international flavour to the event. One of the highlights of CHTNetwork Awards and Ball 2009 was a fashion show by Richard Rivalee, a highly sought after designer for the rich and famous. Complementing the gorgeous dresses were the latest Jaeger LeCoultre watches which adorned the wrists of the models. The event also saw a highly successful charity auction which hammered a pair of Business Class tickets to Shanghai sponsored by Cathay Pacific, two designer gowns from D&L courtesy of Blissful Bridal House and premium kitchen appliances from Kollektion.

CHT PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE (TOURISM) AWARD 2013 Peter Soon Founder of Pinang Peranakan Mansion, Straits Chinese Jewellery Museum Melaka and Fig Tree Hill The name Peter Soon is synonymous with the preservation of Peranakan history and heritage in Malaysia. Beginning with the impressive restoration and refurbishment of a heritage mansion, the Pinang Peranakan Mansion is today a world-class museum and one of the top tourism destinations in Penang. His visionary methods to propagating Malaysian tourism have also given us Fig Tree Hill, an exclusive eco-chic resort in the virgin foothills of Sg Ara in Penang. Every aspect of the resort was carefully planned out by him. The resort was built around an existing stream and the trees around it, with no trees having to be uprooted. Keeping in line with the ‘reserve and conserve’ concept he worked out, Soon ensured much of the building material used were reclaimed items.

CHT PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE (ART) AWARD 2013 Dato’ Dr Tan Chee Khuan Founder of The Art Gallery Penang Dato’ Dr Tan Chee Khuan is a respected psychiatrist with decades of experience under his wings. He is an avid art collector and a successful art entrepreneur; he is a philanthropist, a publisher, and a prolific writer. And, he is an artist. Two of his own paintings from his book ‘Living with Colour-blindness & Other Matters of Interest’ is now in the collection of The National Art Gallery. His love for art spurred him to write about the much neglected art industry of Malaysia back in the 1980s and 1990s. He has almost singlehandedly persevered to document the history of Malaysian art. Over the years, his contributions towards art and his efforts in the documentation of pioneer Malaysian artists and important works of art have enriched the history of Malaysian art and Malaysia as a whole. To date, he has written over 40 books on the subject of Malaysian art.

According to Beh, the company’s values, particularly trust, are based on building strong relations with its customers. ‘This is critical in a residential market like Kuala Lumpur, which is increasingly fragmented as buyers demand more individualised, lifestyle-oriented properties with an emphasis on quality, sustainability and investment value. At Eupe, we remain both vigilant and flexible, not only in meeting current demands for premium housing, but also anticipating future trends in home design to meet changing aspirations and lifestyles,’ he said. Although Eupe’s sights are set on long-term success in the Kuala Lumpur market with its unique mix of bold architectural style and investment value, township development will remain the company’s core business for some time to come. The ongoing strength of its core business and balance strength gives the company the flexibility to pursue cutting-edge developments while providing the basis for sustainable returns for both its customers and shareholders.
