Urban comfort

22

2008

What differentiates a city from suburbs is not its sheer volume of population; instead, it’s the cultural, social and economical elements which form the way one lives and interacts within itself. This project proposes an urban infrastructural form through the interpretation of the city as a space of flows. Major opportunities in the corridor are identified and emphasized through the implementations of connective public spaces, shades, pedestrian pathways. The infrastructure weaves its way through the corridor interfacing with the existing development and becomes the catalyst and guide for future development.

Shade

“Free” A-1 The space is dedicated for the public art display, the path system is gradually created by the users who visit the artworks on a open grass field.

“Centralized” A-2 A centralized water fountain is created to bring people from various locations to gather, communicate and socialize. The water is collected through the shading structures during the monsoon seasons.

“Point” A large amount of plantations are distributed throughou the site in order to incorporate the soft feeling of the natural textures. They also add a sense of pleasing fragrant to the environment.

“Line” These shading structures are used to transport rainwater into the central water fountain space, and to create a sense of horizontal direction across

“Distributed” A-3 The water paths are distributed throughout the site which creates a playful interaction with water and the visitors.

“Along” A-4 The path system is created along the riverside and is introduced into the site to enhance the user experience and quality of space.

“Area” Light fabric shading elements are created for large outdoor public events which can be added or taken down depending on the needs.

Art in public space is an integral part of the entire design of public spaces. The location, type, material of art also defines the use of public space. More often than not, art installations are an afterthought or add-ons with a mere visual purpose. In this case, the unrestricted movement of users through the open space creates trails that echo the intricate geometry of the shading, sculptures, fountains and water-collecting structures.

Elevated living

28

2008

With two thirds of the earth’s surface covered by water and the human body consisting of 75 percent of it, it is evidently clear that water is one of the prime elements responsible for life on earth. However, with climate change and population increase, water is rapidly becoming one of the defining crises of the 21st century. While we desperately need water as our daily necessity, we have also feared and suffered greatly due to its detrimental effect. In 2005, more than 1.2 million homes were left damaged or destroyed after the three storms that occurred in New Orleans. This single family housing project aims to resolve the “need” and the “fear” of water by implementing both the “green roof buffer” and “elevated living” in order to enhance the living environemnt and reclaim the culture and the spirit of New Orleans.

2007

Library can no longer afford itself to be seen as a destination point for the books; instead, it should become the starting point for a wonderful journey. The experience of this project is to explore on the idea of geological layering. This slow process of stratification is reflected through series implementations of physical, visual and tectonic means.

36

Libraries today have the need to be actively engaged with human interaction by showcasing their collections. Books and other information media act as a great venue for social interactions and exchange of ideas. By placing the books along the glass exterior walls, the books become the texture of the building surface.

A series of color studies and models are used to understand the nature of color, and how color can be implemented into the design of various spaces.

Power of cubes

2006

The project was a landscape exercise, it focused mainly on the concept of connection. By developing a basic module for the man-made structures, we were able to first, establish a direct path carrying a connection between the east and the west. Secondly, the plants were purposely placed with both strong vertical and horizontal directions, by doing so, we were then to invite the surrounding streets and the lake into our site. Lastly, the interior spaces for each individual cube was different, some were designed to allow more lights to come in, others were designed to create some unique lighting effects.

The invisible wall

42

2005

The project asked to design a wall, in which explores the sectional possibilities within the architecture of the wall. I decided to create a wall which can challenge the traditional definition of a wall. Instead of separation, the wall encourages interation and socialization. Materialist speaking, the wall is created out of nothing, the wall only appears when the sunlight passes through the small opennings from the roof.

Commentary

I enjoyed having you in my class. You remind me of a good friend and colleague of mine, also an architect, who tended to work at his own pace and scale, often with pretty good results. In your case, your contribution to the project was inspiring. I also remember the first time I suggested to you to try to get some professional experience in another country outside the United States. It seemed like a light bulb went on in your head. Even though, over the years, I gave this advice to several students that I thought would benefit from a broader exposure to architectural thought and practice, few ever got the guts or the means to do it. You did and I believe your understanding of not just architecture but also of the peoples and cultures also matured you greatly. I hope, on a journey of knowledge-seeking and knowledge-building that will last you a life time.

Tom comes across as someone who has a huge appetite for knowledge, experience, and.....most importantly.....food. I have had the previlege to have lunch with him and have witnessed an unbelievable amount of smørrebrød being consumed in a rather confused manner. Discussing architectural ideas with Tom is almost as amusing as watching him eat Danish food. There is definitely no shortage in sincerity and will power to decode and navigate through the sea of abstract ideas and spontaneous inspirations that are constantly overflowing from his wicked brain. Whatever he does, he does it with passion. Whatever he says, he says it with honesty. These are probably the qualities that make him popular amongst our female praktikanter who secretly find him sexy.....despite his absolutely appalling table manners. It’s been a lot of fun working with Tom.

Da Chuan my friend! You have such a colorful character! Im not sure if any other adjective about you is more proper than this one. You have so many different sides to draw from, it feels like knowing you is like knowing many people ! ;)... starting from a wild party animal, crazy mind-twisting artist, joking Mr. I-know-it-all to a sensible musician, reliable friend, co-worker and last but not the least...a gourmand! But Yeah, that could be the word “positive” ! It seems that your personality draws its energy from anything around and always turns it into positive stuff ! Tom, you`re the best party-fellow! I have no doubts you will smoothly pass from one life episode to another spreading good mood on everybody. I wish I could have you around for endless inspiration.

We have known each other for about five years now. It was architecture that brought us together. Even though we were never in the same design studio, I got to know you because you were always there, Working under the bright incandescent light. Later you made into upper division and graduated from two different programs. Until we became roommates, I realized how much time you spent on sleeping. I have to say you are one of the most dedicated people I know. Nevertheless, we did find time to party once in a while. I will always remember our long discussions about architecture and life. And how you said you liked Kahn’s work but want to live like Johnson. Thanks to those cheap oriental beers that brought us even closer. 102
