+ Detailed design

What is Darbuka? Darbuka is one of the most famous Middle Eastern instruments associated with Arab Culture. The hand drum has a goblet shape with a membrane on the head. Goblet drum has been known since ancient times, it was used in Babylon and Ancient Egypt. A percussion instrument bears a huge number of names depending on the region. Sometimes Darbuka is called a doumbek, but they have a significant difference.

What’s the Difference Between Doumbek and Darbuka Drums The difference between the instruments is based on the geography and their form: the Turkish-style metal hand drum with sharp edges is called a Darbuka, and the Egyptian-style one with rounded (often ceramic) edges is called a Doumbek. These are the only differences between these Arabic instruments.

Darbuka, where is it used? Darbuka Drum is a classical instrument for Arabic music and is traditionally used even in modern Arabic pop: Myriam Fares, Amr Diab, Haifa Wehbe and others. For the first time in Western culture, this Middle Eastern musical instrument was used in Hector Berlioz’s opera “Les Troyens”. Now you can find this instrument in many folk groups of Brass, Gypsy and Balkan orientations.

Darbuka types Darbuka is made of various materials, but most often – ceramics, metal and plastic. For concert activities, it is preferable to use a ceramic doumbed with a leather membrane, it has a more melodic and sonorous sound and rich bass. But this type of instrument is very sensitive to changes in weather and humidity. Therefore, metal drums with a plastic membrane became a more common option.

Purchasing Darbuka If you are thinking about purchasing a Middle Eastern percussion instrument for training, concert performances, belly dancing accompaniment, but don’t know which instrument to choose, I selected the top 10 best Darbuka for you.
