What is sitar? Sitar is a multi-stringed Indian musical instrument, also known as an Indian guitar. It has an amazing design: the first thing that catches your eye is a long neck with many tuning pegs. It is hollow, itbreathes,It derives its distinctive timbre and resonance from a gourd-shaped resonance chamber and sounds up to a long hollow neck. The approach to tuning is somewhat similar to other Indian stringed instruments. These strings are plucked with a wire finger plectrum called Mizrab. There are also a series of sympathetic strings lying under the frets. These strings are almost never played but they vibrate whenever the corresponding note is sounded.
Where is sitar used? First of all, sitar is traditionally used in classical Indian music. But also this instrument is used in modern music. Instrument became widely known in the world because of Ravi Shankar. He was the first to introduce Indian music to Western listeners. For the first time in rock music, sitar was used by George Harrison in The Beatles’ song “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)”, recorded in the Rubber Soul album in 1965. Also you can hear sitar in the works of The Doors, The Rolling Stones and other rock musicians.
Types of indian guitar There are two main types of sitar: the Ravi Shankar (R.V.) and the Vilayat Khan (V.K.). You may have heard of another type, Surbahar or bass sitar. These types of indian guitar give listeners and musicians a high-quality musical experience, unlike any other. Also the sound quality and playing techniques of an electric sitar are very different from traditional stringed instruments. For this reason, electric sitars are not used in classical music. However, an electric sitar is a perfect instrument for other styles of music like rock, jazz and even pop music.
