Prologue The Project’s site is located in a region densely populated by a 100-year-old pine forest. The main concept of design is focused particularly on taking advantage of the elevation of the slope to suit the natural environment. To maximize the benefits of the sloping landscape the mass of terraced housing was created at a setback of 2.4m, syncing with the shape of the land and ensuring that each unit was formed in harmony with the scale of the complex as a whole. Personally, as a project manager, it was fortunate for me to experience the whole process from concept design to completion of construction in sequence. To maximize the quality, details were crucial factors to realize the concept design to actual buildings. Also, the involvement from the early phase helped me a lot to accomplish a sophisticated outcome.

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO _ CHUL-MIN LEE 2018 To offer the greater opportunity to experience nature sufficiently and utilize the sloped landscape, the mass of terrace was created at a setback of 2.4m. Moreover, to avoid the vertical sight interference between units, the prominent part of the balcony is planned to be arranged in zigzag formation, and louvers and glass ceilings have been installed as a canopy to maximize the privacy.

Except for the case that all the details were fixed, I had to determine the spatial design and details of certain parts. For a quicker and more efficient decision, I used to draw a proposal sketches to show the design alternatives with materials and details in order to communicate with a master architect or construction personnel to save time. It helped me a lot to develop the ability to make a decision and practical knowledge.

The drop-off zone is the first scenery of the resort for users, each space in the project is connected and extended with an increasing depth and height in order to evolve new spaces within the structure for relaxation and experience.
Comparably huge and flat area where walls are surrounded would function as a space for transitioning from a mundane world to nature’s context through planned sequences. The symetric arrangement, a reflection from water surface, and comprehensive lighting design are harmonized to exaggerate the design pursuit.

Prologue The project is located in the middle of pine tree forest in Kyunggi do. The primary purpose was to maintain the original natural environment and offer the users to experience the nature sufficiently. Despite the comparably large area of each housing units, the gently sloped roof and adequate scale of the second floor mass help the buildings not to spoil the scenary of gorgeous landscape.

2018
The self-portrait is drawn to express and recognize myself. First, I, myself, should be observed meticulously in a physical aspect. Meanwhile, there might be a distortion or exaggeration for a portrait to articulate more than a photograph can do. However, I tried to be more objective rather than drawing myself in caricature way. Although the neutral facial expression means no emotional signal on the face, every impassive face has its own atmosphere and vibe. Above all, it is attributable to various shapes of individual skulls, colors of hair, skin and etc.

Then, what about the identical twins? Besides the congenital factors, the history of life is different for every single person. We can actually see a plethora of chronological layers of life through one’s face. The city we live in can be explained in the same aspect. The city has been formed from a long time ago and we live on millions of the historical layers. Also, architectural activities are being accomplished in a part of the urban formation, just like the process you are acquiring wrinkles on our face.

Description
2018 The city is quite complex. Thus, to explicate an urban phenomenon, we should look into the past history and hidden parts of the sities. For this research project, I concentrated on expressing the innate energy of urban factors in Yongsan-gu into a physical shape by making the Urban Parti Model. Among a variety of hierarchical urban factors, comparably large and influential factors keep affecting to another even if it has vanished completely. Also, the others would be survived or removed in different reacting velocity. Yongsan gu acquires flexibility in terms of openness toward alien cultures through a hundred years of modern history. As continuous settlement of army forces influenced the adjacent urban context a lot, Itaewon(representative downtown near the US Army base) has now been a small global town in Seoul.

Prologue The Project has been initiated by focusing on the unique traits of ‘Itaewon’, representing diverse and exotic town in South Korea, historically homogeneous nation in terms of race and culture. An alien culture has been settled in this area after Japanese troops and US Armed Forces were sequentially located through the modern history of Korea. As a result, Itaeweon Avenue known for exotic commercial sphere coexist with many minorities including Islam cultures in contrasting physical form in the city. Those two factors are divided by a strong street-wall and steep altitudinal difference. A curiosity about the attitude of these minorities toward the majority culture leads me to suggest a different relationship in architectural language. Throughout the whole design process, I tried not to impose any of the local population to be combined with each other. I rather proposed them an opportunity to be extended or have more possibility of common activities in neutral space.

The extended facade toward the Itaewon avenue, motivated from the cloister, would probably grasp the pedestrianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention. Hence, it may lead people to notice the pre-existing steep stairs and the hidden town behind the street-wall. When some of the pedestrians approach the glass box, they will accidentally be faced with the silhouette of the Mosque which was not able to be seen before.

Prologue : The given site is located in the in-between space of different city contexts according to the Zagrebâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s developed period. This abandoned industrial site disconnects the city circulation and urban context. Since the site is located on the extended axis of Zagreb, the urban development should be respected for its own context. In order to extend the pre-existing urban axis and to overcome the disconnection, landscaping can be a solution for further urban design. The Sprawling Valley will introduce a new possibility to become an important node as a mediator of disconnected urban relationship both in Urban and Architectural scale.

Prologue : The 850 ft. long hallway in this ruined Chain Factory is passing through several continuous buildings constructed in different periods. The specific part we investigated on was the dividing boundary of two buildings, built in 1900â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. At this boundary the main structure suddenly changed from wood-steel structure to concrete structure. However, both of the structures have the identical element with different physical form for supporting horizontal h-beams, function as a path of gantry. By overlapping the elements for same functionality to assemble two core samples, the inbetween space had been condensed to show the relationships and the layer of stacked history and atmosphere.

The experiment of new mechanism suggests redefinition of two structures, and the mechanism extended to larger scale to cover the whole hallway to make a kinematic movement of the whole roof. By re-materializing structure and re-anmating the ganrtry, The ruined infrastructure has been re-vitalized eventually.

Iteration of Mies Van Der Rohe’s Project (Reinterpret the materiality)

Prologue : The project, Craft Hall, proposes a variation on Mies Van der Rohe’s Crown Hall in Chicago. It attempts to translate Mies’ meticulous and rigorous respect for steel and its properties and proper uses, by applying the same sensibility to bamboo. It also attempts to maintain the spatial and architectural continuity that Mies carried through from Shinkel’s Altes Museum. The most notable construction details were identified and studied, such as the hanger detail, the corner detail and the wall section. Those details were then translated into bamboo “language” with thorough modifications, trying to maintain the larger cohesive architectural ideas without forcing foreign, inappropriate behavior onto the bamboo itself.

The new structure not only references Mies’ Crown Hall and his own interpretations of the Altes Museum, it also pays homage to other qualities from Schinkel’s building that suits bamboo, notably when interpreting dome elements. In doing so, the bamboo structure maintains the symmetry, rhythm, proportions and hierarchies of the steel roof and façade structure. The Altes arcade was reintroduced as a means to allow the bamboo to perform structurally and span more efficiently. The dome itself explored the bending potential of bamboo, while referencing the strictly cubic geometries of the Crown Hall “dome” merged with the spherical dome of the Altes.

The mullions become structural, and the floor they are linked to becomes the bracing; window mullions become structural, braced by the bamboo structure in the floor plate. Embedding bamboo into mud and concrete for connections and rebar is very different, yet just as complex, as connecting steel onto concrete. Craft Hall is a reinterpretation of both the Altes Museum and Crown Hall, using the bamboo construction techniques developed in the Handmade School project by Anna Heringer + Eike Roswag, while respecting Miesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; approach to structural integrity, clarity and truthfulness to material potential.
