Chapter 1, Weathering Material CRACK, CORROSION, CONNECTION

5th year studio / 2012 / 10 months instructor / Jr-Gang Chi

Site Ching Tain Mound was a hundred year old ruins. The northern part of Ching Tain Mound has many steep stone steps. Going down the stone steps is a big forest and the volcanic smoke comes out from the crater. The entrance, shaped like a hole is surrounded by old trees. Here, five units of houses were once occupied. In the forest, using four different elements of environment, Sunlight, Defoliation, Stream, and Smoke will enact the memory journey. Chapter 1 / CRACK

CRACK A self-exploration in rusty metal spaces, 4 units

Chapter 1 / CRACK

Unit 1. Sunlight After decades, there was a big crack extended from ground to roof. Following the corrosive crack, I entered a secret place where sunlight shone through.

06 / 07

Unit 2. Defoliation There were lots of trees hidden underground. After decades, there was a tree, surprisingly grew from a rusty iron box. Climbing the tree, I could get on the stainless platform.

Chapter 1 / CRACK

Phase 1

Unit 3.Stream Phase 1 There was a metal water walkway in the stream. It had a good shine when I first came. I could only walk up to the cascade and thought that was the end of the passage. Phase 2 After decades, the stream flowed on ground rather than on water walkway. I could walk to ruins through this secret passage. Phase 3 To my astonishment, when I visited here again, I discovered there was another secret passage behind the water curtain where I missed the second time.

CORROSION, Memories in the Rusted Metals Issue & Study Taiwan is an subtropical island known for its balmy, humid climate with saline wind from the sea. In this environment, architectural anticorrosion measures can be costly. By controlling the degree of rust can we build buildings which will rust slowly, a new passage, a new cave, a secret space gradually appeared. In the end, these buildings will disappear. Concept

Metals rust and crack with time, corrosive atmosphere and metal-metal interaction. In a few years, metal color will change, crevices will appear on its surface and the light will shine through cracks in different ways. The hidden spaces will appear.

The stored object is made of metal and is about the size of a human heart.

Program Connecting long-time rusting with profound memory Every person has something that can touch him in the depth of his memory. It could be movie tickets from when you and your exgirlfriend first dated, or the music box that your late grandmother gave you when you were a child. You don't like to see them but you don't want to throw them away either. Do you want to store it in a safe place and forget about it? Leave your deepest thoughts and stories in there and keep it concealed for now. When you visit it decades later, you can see the difference that the past time has made such as stored object, yourself, the architectures, and the surroundings..

method - Utilize a. the characteristics of metal changing under time, environment and metal-metal interaction b. the ways how people handle special memorabilia such as inlaying, soaking, burying, hanging, tossing, and concealing.

Chapter 1 / CORROSION

The metals are rusty. Is this the right color?

It was dark before!

What happen to the promise I made?

Where is my little treasure chest? Is it broken and gone?

CONNECTION, Past and Now

Self-exploration to the forgotten places

The smoke of DaYouKeng crater can be seen and the roads are full of Japanese silvergrasses which are taller than a person.

The entrance is surrounded by trees and can be seen from the last crossroad.

The entire site is full of mist in the fall and winter.

I found a tree grows from a big rusty iron box. Because of the strong boughs I could climb to the silver platform.

When you were watching from the hiking trail the site was concealed. However, because of the defoliation, the historical ruins were found.

Chapter 1 / CONNECTION

The metal architecture used to had a good shine. I could only walk to the cascade where I thought was the end of this passage.

30 / 31

Phase 1. Before cracking

In the dark area under the water walkway, you can hear the sound of water splashing on the metal.

There were different ways of touching water on the walkway.

Chapter 1 / CONNECTION

Here is the crack.

Phase 2. After the first break

The hidden objects were broken and grass grew on them.

The cascade disappeared, and I could walk to the ruin trough this new passage.

After the first metal break, it changed the flow of the cascade to another place.

The the long-time raining water exceeded metal load capacity. It broken and revealed the secret place under the ground.

32 / 33

Phase 3. After the second break

The new cascade obstructed original way and revealed the secret passage behind water curtain.

The Japanese silvergrass led the passage.

Chapter 1 / CONNECTION

The entrance was beneath the ruin.

After the second break, another secret passage behind the water curtain where I missed the second time was found. Following the trail, I entered a space beneath the ruin and found something...

Unit 4 - Smoke

Many small pipes of collecting sulfur minerals were gathered to form big pipes. The small craters could not been seen because of the biggest active crater. By the way of connecting pipes, the small craters could be found.

THANG LONG WATER PUPPET PERFORMANCE

4th year studio / 2011 / 4 months instructor / Hirahara Hideki

Concept A. small water puppets be projected on the wall

The background of Water Puppet Performances in Hanoi (Vietnam)

Thousand years ago in Red River (north Vietnam),when the rice fields flood, the villagers would entertain each other using this form of puppet play.

The shows are performed in a waist-deep pool. A large rod supports the puppet under the water and is used by the puppeteers, who are normally hidden behind a screen, to control them. Thus the puppets appear to be moving over the water.

At night, the focus is back to the theater. People inside the theater can enjoy the performance; people outside the theater can watch some of the show reflected from the wall and water. It's a new kind of enjoyment. 42 / 43
