01 POST-PANDEMIC PUBLIC SPACE Final Year Project

Study of the Design of Public Space in the Post-Pandemic Era In the halfway of the epidemic crisis, the globe is witnessing unprecedented circumstances. We are currently experiencing certain transformations of the familiar urban settings, let alone the public spaces. It is not uncommon to observe that public spaces are losing their vibrancy and liveliness that used to be revolved around. Children have no playground to play around with their peers, and elderly can no longer linger in the parks like the old days. What lies ahead remains a great uncertainty and some inquiries are put forward: How is the COVID-19 changing our relationship with public space? Will the ephemeral adjustments grow into profound transformations? In fact, the pandemic is perhaps leading us the rethink the pros and cons derived from the urban nature changes. The living patterns of the past times may not be suitable for today’s lifestyle anymore. For example, the 1.5 meters social distancing measures may somehow set us apart from socializing. How we could renovate and modernize the public spaces to adapt to the new normal for the post-pandemic era, or even for the recurrence of any other kinds of epidemic as it may be.

Location plan aids to illustrate potential users’ profiles of four different public spaces including (1) Lai Chi Kok Park, (2) Sham Shui Po Park, (3) Tung Chau Street Park, (4) Nam Cheong Park. The location of four parks is greatly related to its neighborhood community where many public estates are beside. From the building context, red colour represent residential area, each public space has its own public estate next to it. Moreover, to identify the different needs between users of the public spaces from the community. The potential users’ distribution and the building context reveal that residents’ living standard greatly depend on the public space in order to extend their living environment. 02 LA RIVIÈRE Tectonic Inquiries - Megastructure Co-living Hosing Complex

The design concept of this megastructure based on its geographcial location, Sheung Yu River where there are opportunies of the 15,000 sq. meter area of vacant land along the river to explore the buildability for 500 family units in the proposed site, Da Shek Wu, Sheung Shui. As in the architecture sits on the south-end of the entire master plan. The location of the river are identified as "River Source", where the river source has a relatively high privacy advantage. With Fan Kam Road on the West side, it provides a convenience traffic network for the residents. On top of this, the block of habitable wings that open toward the remain parts of the master plan in which included a commuity centre, learning centre, market, and the public housing that makes a comfy community.

04 EPHEMERAL GLIMPSED Museum of Glasses

"Order the accidental and make us reflect on the experience of seeing" Hong Kong is a fast-paced metropolis, densely populated and highly addictive. However, there is one place in the heart of Causeway Bay, where the Museum of Glasses for Chris Wood provides an inquisitive experience and distinctive atmosphere inside the architecture.

Light is the medium to create the huge variety of intriguing rainbow coloured shadows and projections. By using the pearlescent ceramic panel as the façade to harness patterns of light that suggest the ephemeral glimpsed moments in the natural world. The Museum of Glasses orders the accidental and make us reflect on the experience of seeing.

04 SUBCULTURE HUB Headquarter Office Tower for VANS The presevation of subcultures x The Space Invader

"House of Vans" Tower is a high-rise headquarter office for Vans. The initail idea is 'preservation of subcultures'. Subcultures, like graffiti and tattoos develop their own norms and values. They are immersed in the society while keeping their specific characteristics intact. However, it can be perceived as negative due to their nature of criticism to the dominant society standard. Subcultures are being neglected by the universal values. The architecture creates opportunities to recall what is truly precious in this city. Vans is a company which plays the leading role in the industry that promoting and saving the subcultures, “Off the wall” is a rallying cry for self-expression. In the form of skateboarding, art, music and street culture, showcasing and inspire people with passion and creativity. House of Vans is a place where the imagination is let loose over multiple facets, it gathers and inspires everyone who participate. This is the experiential hub for people to come together and embrace the “Off the wall” sprite. Vans always has the courage to be innovative, they are always seeking for a breakthrough. That why the one of the best feature of Vans is the crossover series. Over the decades, the Vans shoes do not have much modifications. It can be regarded as a pure canvas for the designers to add on whatever they wanted. So there is one place in the heart of Causeway Bay, a building is nicely settle at the end of the Yee Wo Street, where as soon as you step through its door, I hope the vistors can feel the distinctive style and the unique atmosphere inside the building.
