SaRang Community Church in Seoul is one of the world’s largest congregations with over 40,000 people attending in six worship hours each Sunday on their single campus. When continued growth was not feasible any longer, they purchased a new 1.7 acre site. Beck’s design will enable over 20,000 persons to worship together at one time, over half that number underground while providing a dynamic architectural statement for the Korean church. Beck’s unique design solution had to accommodate approximately 740,000 square feet of space including a 6,500-seat Worship Center, 600-seat Chapel, multiple large multipurpose overflow worship venues, children, youth & small group ministry spaces, bookstore/café, restaurant, and roof gardens. The facilities are designed around a global ministry plaza that gives the community a unique gathering place in the highly dense Seoul environment.

The Iri Shinkwang Church sought out Beck to create a new facility designed around innovative American church ministry concepts, yet set in the cultural and environmental context of South Korea. Beck’s unique design solution had to accommodate approximately 300,000 square feet of space on just a seven acre site—including a 2500 seat sanctuary, 300 seat chapel, cafeteria, fitness facility, children and youth education facilities and a 500 car underground parking structure. Due to Korea’s high energy costs, the building was also designed to be extremely energy-efficient. To reduce energy use, Beck’s design used advantageous orientation of the buildings to catch prevailing winds for hotter months and shelter the buildings in colder months, sun shading devices, and extensive use of exterior ventilation to reduce heating loads. The facilities are designed around a public open space that gives the community a unique gathering place in a very dense city environment. The project was completed in 2008.

Harim Group is one of the largest food companies in South Korea; it and its 52 affiliated companies include products like chicken, branded pork meat, feed, beef, duck, and TV home shopping. Harim Group asked Beck to design a state-of-art headquarters in the heart of Seoul to accommodate 10,000 square meters of office space in a mid-rise tower on a tiny, but highly-valued site. The program included office space and a board room for Harim Group as well as high-end restaurants and a café. To adapt to high energy costs in Korea and to enhance the indoor air quality, Beck designed an operable window system for natural ventilation, high-performance Low-E coated windows, LED and fluorescent light fixtures, a building automation system, green roof, rainwater harvesting system, and underfloor air distribution system. An ‘S’ shaped recess in the façade is not only a design signature, but also a functional element, creating a low-pressure zone which facilitates natural ventilation by drawing air across each of the floors.

NS HomeShopping Mixed Use, perhaps the most anticipated development in Pangyo, South Korea in recent years, is located in the heart of a high-tech development area. This mixed use facility will provide much-needed parking and is expected to heighten retail activity and boost the local economy. The complex covers one block with over 5,000 square meters of leasable area and features retail, bank, a broadcasting studio, and a 15,500 square meter parking garage. It sits on one acre and includes covered sidewalks, mature trees and sophisticated architecture to create a pedestrian-friendly, urban environment and offer a unique experience to patrons and nearby office workers. Almost 400 parking spaces were provided to public which were much-needed in this area To attract nearby office workers, Beck created a metal mesh skin to cover the unattractive parking garage and an LED faรงade lighting system for the facade was provided to create a colorful exterior image at night.
