PRODUCTION GARDEN BSc THESIS PROJECT Year: 2021 Individual project Location: Leckwith, Wales, United Kingdom Within this unit, I earned the opportunities to explore social regeneration under the context of waste. This makes my thesis focused on the regeneration and repurpose of wasted space. The project is about the opportunity to revitalize Leckwith by restoring the agricultural values, diminished by the consequences of globalisation that lead to food miles and positively reconnecting communities to nature. Located on the edge of Leckwith surrounded by Leckwith Woodlands and the river Ely, where the site is set on a hard environment and heavily industrialized area. This gives opportunities for the scheme to, not only regenerate the environment but also provide a journey through spaces that frame the

significant landscape. This in hope will connect the bonds between nature and people together. The scheme first addresses the necessity to introduce a sustainable processed building like a vertical hydroponic farm by providing facilities for local people to process microgreen, sell harvested crops on-site, provide locally exportation to retails and marketplace to reduce food-miles. Allowing the public to celebrate the process of harvesting and cultivating as part of Leckwith’s historical identity through incorporating the idea of agricultural production and agricultural land fragment while the process remains sustainable through the use of a circular economy.

The use of 3 ‘RE’s has been implemented for part of the strategies: 1) Reconnecting with local nature 2) Re-vitalize land and roadway using eco-pavement for friendly roadway and prevent surface runoff

By creating a friendly roadway in combination with reference from Leckwith agricultural urban farming ‘yard’ circulation, the design ended up with a ‘yard’ space which does not only act as a commuting roadway but also a gathering space for local communities to actively engage in sustainable farming activities and enjoy a relaxing green lifestyle.

3) Re-use - the scheme embraces the act of reuse through reusing floor slabs from abandoned warehouses and maximise the use of sustainable material such as glulam timber.

2

FOOD NETWORKING

The huge amount of food retail and supermarkets can be found nearby the site which suggests the issue of food miles that impact on carbon footprint during transportation whether it be regionally or globally.

AN EMERGENT OF BITCOIN TERRITORY WARMING 2021 Year: 2021 Collaborator: Ping-Hshin Wang, Soisalak Rojanavilaivudh Location: Unalakleet, Alaska, USA Bitcoin is what many believe to be THE new form of digital currency or the new gold. Bitcoin’s value and future are often discussed but not enough around the heated GPU, running 24/7 behind the scenes. By 2033, We are at risk of rising global temperature by 2 percent from Bitcoin mining. The mining and processing transactions require heavy hardwares and continuous electrical supply that consumes fossil fuels. Thus, how can this new cryptocurrency emerge alongside citizens, creating the least pollution as possible? ‘Unalakleet’ is a town known for its long historical self-sustain tradition and fishing. The city reported a rise in the aging population; thus, to integrate the bitcoin industry into the town, the scheme provides active retirement housing by the riverside with a fishing lodge, allowing

elders to have a relaxed gateway and activities that prompts social interaction. Above is a space for cultivating traditions while the underground is a hidden bitcoin mining factory, opposing conventional mining. It is a place where the old and the new can co-depend and co-exist. While geothermal and renewable sources have been a greener solution for the digital mining crisis, this project aims to make cryptocurrency a more sustainable practice through a circular energy system. By capturing the heat generated from the GPU and converting it into electricity that powers the living space above, fewer heat escapes and becomes wasted.

THE TEOTIHUACAN PASSAGE PAVILLION OF HUMANITY Year: 2020 Collaborator: Arno Decorte, Nok Lorine Leung Location: Mexico We humans have been around for 11 billion years. To us, this timeframe seems like an eternity. However, in the context of the cosmic calendar, we have existed for 0.0000008% of the universe’s lifetime. Yet, despite being around for less than a blink of an eye, we have been able to land on moons, create artificial intelligence and probe the galaxy and beyond. Of all the dimensions that dictate the laws of the universe, time has been the chronologer as well as the motivator of our achievements. The choice of Teotihuacan, Mexico as a site provides us with various artefacts to reference in our design. The sublime scale of the Piramide del Sol, the picturesque Avenue of the Dead and the

W monolithic pedestals have our history ingrained within them. The Teotihuacan Pavilion of Humanity takes our cyclical concepts of time to produce a pavilion that recounts the story of humanity in a never-ending loop. Birth, death, decay and regeneration all come together. The circulation flowing throughout the gallery takes the users on a journey from our very genesis to the contemporary humans that roam the earth today. A discussion room, a workshop and a theatre serve as interactive spaces to engage with the storyline as the user traverses the gallery.

By constructing our stories of the present on the remnants of the past, we can set up a dialogue with the future. At the core of the pavilion is an open courtyard encompassing an ancient pedestal. Above, a circular aperture towards the sky encourages speculation on extraterrestrial life, to contemplate our lonely existence in such a grand universe. With the addition of this pavilion, Teotihuacan evolves from a place to remember the past, to a place that optimistically speculates on our future.

D COSMOS OBSERVATION

The Pavilion uses local materials that are organised based on an intricate tectonic strategy. As we ascend the building, the materials used change based on human interference. Starting from the rugged rammed earth, then transitioning to pine, followed by the engineered bamboo which is then overlaid by a smooth silk cloth. This aims to exemplify the human craft of using natural resources, as well as allowing the pavilion to age with humanity.

SCG - SIAM COMMON GROUND CIVIC CENTRE UNIQUELY THAI 2021 Year: 2021 Collaborator: Tisha Ararmkul, Punnapa Pairojtanachai Location: Bangkok The project proposes a civic center that personifies our ‘Thainess’ to become the most centralized, communal, cultural building that evolves with the society and city, becoming a landmark tourist destination in Southeast Asia. This project intends to explore ‘togetherness’ and demonstrate that ‘A city can grow because of its people.’ The UN reported that Thailand’s Human Development Index dropped by 16.9%, down to 0.635, suggesting an increased gap in inequality. Bangkok also lacks places that provide opportunities for the population’s growth and expressing lifestyles within the metropolitan area. So, how can we create a place to show the city’s growth and collective cultural

experiences whilst also reducing the inequality gap in Thailand? By expanding on the concept of “Togetherness”, a state or feeling of closeness and happiness among people, into the heart of the building we aim to create an inviting space for everyone to be able to come explore and express their passions. To educate and engage the public, Cultural and artistic exhibits are scattered throughout the building, allowing visitors to be in touch and collect cultural and artistic fragments as they move through the building. The functions are blended into each other to weave the different social groups and generations together creating free spaces that do not belong to any specific crowd.

The building is enclosed by a recreational park that allows for exercise, playground area, busking, painting, and public performance shows in the amphitheater. The park also helps blend our space into the green space north of the site, reducing the disconnection between them. A “space” transforms into a “place” after successfully creating a community with activities and functions for humans. Over time, the functions and spaces are free to evolve with the ever-growing society. Memories of engaging activities and eventful moments experienced in the building are ingrained within the visitors to transform this building into a special “place” for them.

Bangkok is built on marshland next to the Chao Praya River, lying on highly-compressible soft clay. Coupled with the increasing weight from urbanization and annual rainfall, the sinking city is predicted to be underwater in less than 15 years (as stated by the Thai National Reform Council). To tackle this problem, wetlands and a retention pond are integrated within the landscape to store rainwater and delay flooding during an emergency. The building itself is also designed to still be functional in the case of an underwater

FRAGMENT OF THE PAST YEAR 2 TERM 2 PROJECT Year: 2020 Individual work Location: Pontypridd, United Kingdom Pontypridd was an industrialised town full of history. A variety of performances including orchestra staged play, choral and traditional sport, boxing, had been used to portray the story of Pontypridd. However, today, most of the cultural centre and performance stages including Old Town Hall and Muni Art Centre were shut down. The only place left that holds Pontypridd together is the Old Museum, next to the Old Bridge in Bridge Street. The museum collects such as archives, documentaries, and ornaments left by people of Pontypridd in the past. By choosing the site opposite the museum, in which the area has been going under development for more than 10 years and located around the edge of the town, is an opportunity to create a performance space for Pontypridd people to display what the museum has collected to the community through sound and visual.

When it comes to the technical aspect of design, especially Performance space is rather very challenging, ranging from exterior to interior. Timber unexpectedly became the main choice of material to create a feeling of harmony of nature and inviting. However, with the urban fabric of Pontypridd, brick is more common. The second technical challenges are circulation and landscape design. Since the area is a large land area, careful consideration is needed. With that in mind, the design intention is to be given a circular circulation in order for people to engage with the building with full experience under the context. Using timber would be the definite answer and with the most effective form, that would reflect the symbol within the Old Museum. The new performance space is hoping to be another fragment to the Old Museum allowing people to reflect Pontypridd’s past and form a community space for Pontypridd people.

Old bridge The area considered to be the edge of community area. People either crossing the old bridge to the residential areas or visit the Pontypridd museum which is the heritage site of Pontypridd. which makes it a very touristy area. With big traffic junctions, people required to cross several junction from 1-3 in order to access to the main site. This area A might not be suitable to create an entrance space for the proposal.

AREA A

3

AREA C

Old bridge has been used to cross to residential areas in a close distant. During my visit to Pontypridd, there were approximately 5 people walk passsed within 10 minutes. However it might depend on the time during the day. It is a nostalgic route as crossing the bridge the view from the mountain reflected on the river taff can be very noticeable.

AREA B

The most concentrated area comparing to Area D. There is a crossing in the middle in order for people to access to the site which makes it safer and easier for people to equally walk to left or right (equal distribution).

Area D is directly connected to Taff Vale street or a market street and the centre of Pontypridd. Most of the buildings around here are groceries store but only one building at the edge is abandoned building which used to be community space for Youth in Pontypridd.

Area C is a good option to create entrance space to welcome people.

The number of people around this area is considered higher than the people in area A because it is a long walking street.

CONCEPT EXPLANATION The roof concept is inspired by the symbol of connection and transition in an abstract way. Since it is located in between the 2 areas that face two different views, cityscape and nature, this suggested to me that there should be a symbol of bridge or connection in a way that

ABANDONMENT OF THE SPACE PRIMER PROJECT YEAR 3

Year: 2020 Individual Primer Work Location: Bangkok, Makkasan This primer project will focus on the aspect of space under large structure in Bangkok such as airport link station. This mega structure acts as a connecting point from one part of the city to another. It becomes a convenient way of travelling within the city. However such a space under the structure is abandoned and not efficiently used as much as it should be which, in the end, turned into wasted space.

The whole area here is also about to become another central business district. The area is pretty much very functioning, surrounded by public transport hubs and public sectors such as underground station and Airport Link station as well as office space, high rise residential areas and canal where people can travel by boat. The area locates in between the 2 CBDs where this area will become one in the future.

The focused area is Makkasan district. A large site that was owned by the Ministry of Railway. It consists of Makkasan Forest, large restricted green space which full of 100 years old trees and makkasan train workshop built in 1922.

This project is about proposing a meaningful way to generate lively and playful atmosphere under the skytrain.

From the top view you can see how successful and active the area can be, now looking at the area under airport link station where my focus will be. It is isolated. It is a brutalist area full of concrete. Apart from the main station entrance, this massive inactive area only consists of a parking area, pedestrian footpath and cycling lane. Daily users include local people who came to have a walk, run, a worker who comes to the station, and a daily commuter. My goal is to propose an adaptable and playful resting stations that applies to different type of users to create a cluster of community underneath the airport link station. The best and most effective way

to deconstruct the brutalist aspect is to integrate the form of nature, the lightness, ABANDONMENT OF organic and disorder into my proposal.

THE ORGANIC PAVILLION - HIDE AND SEEK WSA: DESIGN PRINCIPLE METHOD / PARAMETRIC STUDIES Year: 2020 Individual Assignment

Design Principle Method, a technical module that introduces the use of Grasshopper and Parametric Scripts. By beginning to understand the script and commands, we were assigned to choose an architectural element or anything from real world and adapted using parametric script to produce architectural variations.

In this section: Mesh The instruction suggests the use of plugin Weaverbird. With my main focus on spatial experience, I choose to explore the organic structure to understand how its shape affects the experience inside and the interaction with light. At the same time, understand how the parameter affects the structure.

[RE] CHAIR

KAGU DESIGN COMPETITION 2021 Year: 2021 Collaborator: Arno Decorte, Chutikhan Na Songkla, Medhpiya Dalal Location: Higashikawa, Japan The Coronavirus pandemic has brought unprecedented problems to the surface, particularly the sense of isolation and suffocation from being confined in their own living spaces. So we decided to base this project on photography as a holistic practice, creating a new lifestyle. The [Re]Chair aims to: Reconnect Restore Reframe

[Re]Chair assists junior high school students of Higashikawa during outdoor photography workshops, acting as a stabilizer for students to capture a moment. The form draws inspiration from different elements from photography as well as being tailored towards the anthropometrics of children in junior high schools. On its own, the chair exists as a half-frame, which then completes the entire image frame when it connects with another and extends into a continuous film roll when multiple chairs interact. Once students graduate from junior high school, thechairs will be kept and used by incoming students. The patina that develops on the chair shows signs of use, love, and care by the user, thus developing mindfulness and responsibility.

AND ALL THIS IS THE ARCADES IN OUR EYES WINTER VERTICAL STUDIO 2020 / PRINTING THE MUNDANE

Year: 2020 Individual Project: Photography / Architecture research / Graphic Booklet Location: Morgan Arcade, Cardiff, United Kingdom Cardiff, a city of arcades. These Edwardian/Victorian arcades are part of Cardiff and often found around the city centre. I started being attentive to the details after a visit to a cafe located in the middle of Morgan arcade. Back in 1858, Royal Arcades was the first arcade to be built after clearing of a slum house. Since then, another arcades followed and provided more than 100 businesses for people. Nowadays these parts turned into:

A path; An alleyway; A commercial passageway; A shopping street; A street; A tunnel; A shelter; An office; A void; A connecting path; Etc. However people would define it depending on the situation. It is interesting and very questionable for me to find out how people perceive the use of these arcades.

“These arcades, a recent invention of industrial luxury, are glass-roofed, marble paneled corridors extending through whole blocks of buildings, whose owners have joined together for such enterprises. Lining both sides of the arcade, which gets its light from above, are the most elegant shops so that the passage is a city, a world in miniature:”

The author fascinated me in the way he expresses his observation regarding space in a text. It allows me to use my imagination while the texts remain in an abstract and imaginative way.

09 And All This Is The Arcades In Our Eyes I 2020

I love how you I love I

Printing the Mundane at WSA Vertical Studio Exhibition 2020

To follow strangers and take photos after them is not my specialty even though I am always into photography. Yes, that is what I did as part of this project apart from observing the lighting effect inside the space. This is to understand how people interact with the space starting from the entrance of the arcade following the long narrowed perspective of glass windows/doors to the end. I observed and recorded in a long text like a journal of my journey. I then transformed these long texts into abstract texts. Writing textand abstractly express them is very challenging personally. I foundit difficult to express things in speech but not in writing so I would like to give myself a chance to do something new. While thinking of a caption for each photograph, I found out about how abstract textcan give people different interpretations and let readers imagine things on their own which is a fun part, not to constrain their imagination.
