Portfolio CHIN,CHUN-WEN 2002 - 2009
Prelude
CHIN,CHUN-WEN
This portfolio includes six projects and it was divided into two parts. The first part included four projects is academic works which are concerned about urban issues such as localism, the centralization problem of Taipei city and the connection of architecture and urban context. The second part included two projects is professional works which enable me actually realize the “reality of architecture and improve me to put the imagination into practice. These projects recorded my progress from architecture to urban design and to interior design.

Incomplete and Complete Isolation
This project was working in the same year as thesis design was .Before I started my final project, I was trying to create two compared worlds. This project is a preface to “Neighborhood Architecture“
The length of the site is 90m. The width is 30m. This project makes a place secluded from the world. At first, there were several types which follow the rule of isolation. Finally, there was a mountain between two buildings which are relatively independent but innercommunicable.

Neighborhood Architecture
This is a process to find a life style in Taipei. It is also a journey to review and record where I am and how I got used to live. According to the urban observation,I realize what surprised you is the reality we got used to live. At the same time, the novel,Invisible Cities written by Calvino, inspired me to imagine the whole new prototype of architecture which reflects our life. Cities & Signs I If a building has no signboard of figure, its very form and the position it occupies in the city’s order suffice to indicate its function ...,which the vendors displayon their stalls are valuable not in themselves but as signs of other things..., your gaze scans the streets as if the were written pages : the city says everything you must think makes you repeat her discourse, and while you believe you are visiting Tamara you are only recording the names with which she defines herself and her parts.

Urban-like I painted with Urban-Like when I imagined our life in Taipei. The drawing is full of overlapped pastel as time goes by.. I believed the lifestyle can be found. As I scraped the black pastel, I could see the significantly colorful pastel which means our lifestyle. The lifestyle is the most important part to be a life architecture.

Curiously, what is the thing which makes the original planning look so different? What is the thing which changes each block so unique? Take Barcelona and Taipei for example, the block is different from the other. What if there is a kind of architecture can present our life?

Cities & Signs III This is not true of Zoe. In every point of this city you can,in turn, sleep, make tools, cook, accumulate gold, disrobe, reign, sell, question oracles. Any one of its pyramid roofs could cover the leprosarium or the odalisques’ baths. The traveler roams all around and has nothing but doubt : he is unable to distinguish the features of the city, the features he keeps distinct in his mind also mingle. He infers this : if existence in all moments it all of its,Zoe is the place of indivisible existence. But why, then, does the city exist? What line separates the inside from the outside, the rumble wheels from the howl of wolves? Excerpt from “Invisible Cities“ written by Italo Cavino

Thin City II No one remembers what need or command or desire drove Zenobia’s founder to give their city this form, and so there is no telling whether it was satisfied by the city as we see it today, which has perhaps grown through successive superimpositions from the first, now under undecipherable plan. But what is certain is that if you ask an inhabitant of Zenobia to describe his vision of a happy life,it is always a city like Zenobia that he imagines, with its pilings and its suspended stairways,a Zenobia perhaps quite different,a-flutter with banners and ribbons, but always derived by combining elements of that first models. Defining Boundary and Living Area : Neighborhood Neighborhoods, the minimum unit of administration, are demarcated by roads, the density of population and the convenience of traffic. They are satisfied with the living requirement. There are 449 neighborhoods in Taipei,Taiwan. Actually, the boundary of neighborhood is hard to define. Through researches and observations,I finally find the Xing-Chang Neighborhood which is defied the boundary by the nature.

I attempt to create a neighborhood architecture which is a epitome of Xing-Chang Neighborhood (1/1 & 1/10,000).The methods are the existing programs. By using the existing public spaces such as street , school and row houses, this neighborhood architecture will be not only a administrate center but also a leisure place which makes people spend more time outdoors. This neighborhood architecture sums up all existing activities in XingChang Neighborhood and the need of neighborhood administration.

An elementary school is full of people to do exercise. A place that we can bask quilts, and cats also sun on cars. A space that people can get together easily.

Due to the unprecedented development, the Xing-Yi District is an unique type of Taipei urban space. In addition, the centralization problem of Taipei city is an important issue in this district.

Shop House in Tamshi,Taiwan
This project is a shop house along Tamsui River that is one of the most famous resorts in Taiwan. Because of the special character and building form of the shop house’s,most of them are lack of light. I attempt to create void space which is taken advantage of the 40% building coverage ratio and designed to use the light to the maximum. Also, the void space link to the urban fabric. As the result, people will walk along the void space which is the shortcut to the Tam-sui River to take a boat or to see the sunset. I separate the high and long volume into diverse purposes such like business, dwelling and several pubic space to require the members’ need. Shop Houses and Danshui River

No. 107 Apartment
Apartment to Catch Green
04
Professional work Taiwan 2009 spring HCW architects and Planners I was in charge of SD CD DD.
46
No. 107 apartment faces the mountain. Because of such a beautiful position, this project was concerned to response the natural environment. In addition,it also create an unique prototype of apartment in Taiwan. The strategy is to separate the core from the unit of the residence and insert a semi-outdoor space. This action makes a void space to approach the surroundings.
Site
Typical apartments in Taiwan use all the plot ratio to shape inner space. No. 107 apartment creates different type to insert a semioutdoor platform which makes better connection with the natural surroundings.
The inserted platforms show that even if people live in the apartment, they can have their own yards The yard become an important element to this project’s facade. Core

Concept : Diverse Elevation for each Unit Extending platforms not only form the different elevation for each unit but also create a space to approach the nature.
Gardens are put different positions, some are in front of the living room, some are in front of the bedroom.
Windows are important elements to the facade of the building. In this case, each unit has its own facade.

Renovation of Chin House
The important void space is obviously the main living space and the space connect with each private room and it is also the link of natural light. The source of the indirect light makes the interior space bright in the daytime.
