THE RE-CONSTRUC

TEMPORARY LAND AND PROJECT INTRODUCTION The design is based on the vacant lot in the center of Beijing Forestry University, where used to be an old nursery base. A building will be built there several years later, but currently it is messy and useless. Since its important lacation, this site has potential to be a recreation space for all students and visitors. Our idea was to re-construct the land in a simple and easy way, it would be flexiable and could be moved away easily, in the meanwhile, it should be energetic, provide multiple space for all the people in campus.

STEP 4 DYMANIC

Based on the idea, we got the inspiration of "Mobile Garden: a movable garden where space is uncertain and can be altered as you wish.

CONCEPT We designed a series of mobile infrastructures with different materials and fuctions: some are planting beds, planting the original plants in nursery and new varieties of flowers; some are mirror stainless steel plates, reflecting the image of environment and people around them as a small pool; some are used as chairs, with grass and wild flowers behind.

ANALYSIS

“Mobile Garden”is full of possibilities. When you need to hold outdoor shows or parties, the infrastructures can be pushed to the corner, forming a centre space; other times you can push the appliances to separate parts, making little, free and secrete space. It is a way to enjoy the fun of creating a garden of your own.

GROWING GREEN

Baltimore is often seen as a city defined by its neighborhoods. A recent quote from Baltimore Magazine states “Each section of our city has its own history, culture, and personality—an identity that can only be truly understood after years or generations of experience” . The greening of vacant lots through urban agriculture and farming is a viable way to continue to add to the identity of each of Baltimore’s community, adding beauty to many neighborhoods where vacant housing units and lots take away from these vibrant cultures.

URBAN SPACE

With this in mind, Real Food Farms has decided to submit a design to the Growing Green Competition. They decided to delegate MRA to do the design work. Based on several community meetings we had, we decided to choose No. 1405-1435 Gay Street Baltimore, Maryland 21213, lots 1497 001-1497 015. This site is located in the Broadway East community, and the streets bordering the site are North Gay Street, North Washington Street, and East Hoffman Street. We are proposing the construction of a flower farm and communal green space on the previously mentioned site. GROWING GREEN

PRESENTATION AND FINAL REWARD In September 2014, Our desing "Growing Green" went to the finalist amont all submitted projects and finally got the best design award and top one grant from Baltimore Government. The grant would be put into construction right away and part of the park would be built in 2015. It was really an excited expereince to get this, and I am honored to contribute my effort to the development of Baltimore City.

GROWING GREEN

VALUE OF THE PROJECT This site has the potential to be a huge part of the upcoming changes to the landscape in Broadway East over the coming years. With the upcoming growth of the food hub across the street, the continued maintenance of surrounding lots by the community, future development of the lots across Gay Street, and potential building nearby, this could be the beginning of a green corridor serving as the entrance to Broadway East. Using this site as an opportunity to engage in urban farming, especially the farming of vibrant and colorful flowers, would help to make the community come alive!

GROWING GREEN

The design is made of two main parts: the Flower Factory (Flower Farm) and a community park. We organized these spaces in order to provide a public recreation space for the neighborhood, while at the same time, providing economic benifit to Real Food Farm for construction and maintaince.

A “U” path goes though the site, linking the programs together. Flower Factory lies in the center of the site closely connected with community lawn. Flower beds range from 2’-5’ wide, depending on the species. Considering the bus stop and elementary school on northeast, the North Plaza acts as an entrance and provides rest space for people. We kept the way for two existing paths from southeast to northwest. Rain Garden is on the lowest spot of the site to manage stormwater sustainably.

The development of this property on Gay Street is a project that all involved parties are extremely excited about being a part of because we believe that it would be not only an excellent addition to the city’s greening initiatives, but a spectacular way to redefine and cultivate the culture of the Broadway East neighborhood.

GARDEN OF HEARTS

PROJECT INTRODUCTION Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) is one of the best international garden and flower show in Asia. It is a biennial event organized by Singapore National Parks Board. In the festival, the Landscape & Fantasy Gardens are the most enchanting garden displays, which are created by local and top awardwinning designers from renowned garden shows around the world. Alter DYJG was invited to design a “Fantasy Garden in the 2012 SGF. I participate in this project from the beginning, we changed several design proposals, and finally built this one.

AURA AND MEDITATION White veil twines ring upon ring and winds through green bamboos, where a garden of hearts lies. Its mystery seduces people rambling into it to explore something. Setting against the gray gravel pavement and green bamboo, this cloudlike veil is of transcendent purity, and its mazy space guides its appreciator gradually away from the secular society and into this Zen garden. Through various twists and turns, and even confusion looms, people finally come to the center of the garden. In the middle of the dancing white veil is a peaceful water pool, with beautiful lotus in full bloom, pure, lovely and nice-smelling. The mirror-like pool reflects the lotus, green bamboo and white veil, as if there is another world in the water. Not only in the pool, the lotus blossoms also in the heart of each person, bringing people a quiet, touched and insightful mind. Still tortuous the path to leave is, people already find their inner peace and calm away from the secular worries. Looking back, this utopia world disappears in a mist. While the people, in the quiet time, will miss the lotus in their hearts.

URBAN DESIGN

In ancient China,Bell and Drum Towers were buildings mainly used for timekeeping and striking the hours. “Morning bell and evening drum”, they were used as reference to the operation of people’s lives. Bell and Drum Tower of Beijing is located on the northern end of the city axis, serves as a landmark building of Beijing. With the development of the modern society, Bell and Drum Tower has lost its unique roles and values, leading to the gradual disappearance of traditional culture; under the erosion of urban construction and tourism, Beijing’s traditional residences around the Bell and Drum Tower have lost their vitality. Therefore, we chose the region where contradictions and collisions exist between modern and traditional culture and life: Houhai Bar Street and the residential area south of Bell Tower and Drum Tower.

VERTICAL URBAN PLANNING IN S

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

City Land Properties in 1990&2010

Chongming Island, located in the north boundary of Shanghai, used to be covered by shoals, wetlands and forest. Due to expansion, towns and urban infrastructures are increasingďźŒand natural habitats are decreasing on Chongming Island. Recent years, the Food Crisist is becoming a world problem.China is undergoing the process of urbanization. Ensuring the demand for agricultural products of 1.3 billion people has become the common social issue for landscape architects.

PROBLEMS More and more people a r e m o v i n g i n t o Chongming Island. The urban infrastructures have increased substantially. Normal horizontal urbanization encroach the farmland, beaches and forests of island. The insufficient food supply is also another problem in Shanghai.

CONCLUSION The rapid expansion of urban core caused negative interference to urban boundary, occupied farmland and natural ecological environment in urban boundary. Meanwhile, urban boundary depends on urban core in economic, industrial, and social aspects excessively.

0 6

SET LAND FREE

Vegetab of Local

Urban area is made up of Urban Core and Urban Boundary. The latter has multiple functions in society, agriculture and ecology. The development of Urban Boundary is influenced both by the urban core and self-condition. This project, based on the Chongming Island planning and design in Shanghai, attempts to explore the Low-interference & Low-dependency Pattern in Urban Boundary development.

CONCEPT This project uses “VERTICAL” as a concept—trying to solve problems to vertical space, aiming at returning farmland back to farmers, outdoor space back to residents, and the natural and ecological environment back to urban space.

VERTICAL FARM Vertical farming can dramatically reduce the violation of the existing open space, wetland, forest and farmland causing by those urban infrastructures in urban boundary as there is far less land needed than traditional farming methods. Moreover, vertical farm is conductive to the development of intensive agricultural economy. VERTICAL LIFE The diversity of urban life today makes ”vertical life” a new lifestyle. Vertical life, different from the traditional lifestyle in high-rise building, intensively conforms every aspect of urban life, from public service to individual needs, from official business to commercial entertainment, and from indoor living to outdoor acitivities.

ACTIVITIES

AGRICULTURE

Vertical Farming technology, especially vegetable production and processing, uses rainwater collection systems and solar panels as its main source of water and energy, to achieve a highly intensive agricultural economy. Agricultural products can not only meet the demand of urban core, but also can be self-sufficient.
