PRIZEGIVING 2019
Incorporating Public Examination Results
Headmaster’s Introduction Governors, Parents, Pupils and Guests Welcome to this year’s Prizegiving and a particularly warm welcome to our Guest of Honour, Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards. I am grateful to Michael Gallagher for hosting this year’s ceremony and to Sarah Dixon, Chris Jones and Ian Knowles for their expertise overseeing arrangements. My thanks also to the Captains of College, Holly Milner and Ben Williams, for their contributions. Many congratulations to our prizewinners. This afternoon is an opportunity to reflect on the extraordinary achievements of the last academic year and to celebrate all that makes Churcher’s College such a special place to learn and grow. The College and guests are asked to stand as the dais party enters and leaves the hall. After the proceedings guest are invited to the Dining Hall or Assembly Hall for tea.

Guest Speaker
Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards This afternoon’s Guest of Honour is Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards, famously Great Britain’s first Olympic ski jumper. Eddie was ranked 55th in the world which qualified him as the only British applicant for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. With the UK firmly backing the plasterer from Gloucestershire, Eddie took to the slopes followed by a whirlwind of international press and media. Eddie competed in the 70m and 90m jump events, but unfortunately came last in both. Although he did not win an Olympic medal, he did win a place in the hearts of spectators around the globe. This was ultimately due to his lack of success, but more importantly his pure determination and 'have a go' attitude. During the Winter Games closing ceremony, the president of the Organising Committee, Frank King, singled out Edwards for his contribution: “At these Games, some competitors have won gold, some have broken records, and some of you have even soared like an eagle”. Since the '88 Winter Olympic Games, Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards has continued to share his story delivering motivational and after-dinner speeches. He has appeared regularly on television and radio, including as a competitor on BBC1’s Let’s Dance for Sport Relief (making it to the final on public votes) and as winner of BBC’s Winter Wipeout and ITV’s Splash. In 2016 a feature film based on Eddie’s inspirational life - 'Eddie The Eagle' - was released worldwide, featuring Hugh Jackman and Taron Egerton.

Prizewinners 2019 Lower Sixth Bond Memorial Prize for French
The Headmaster, Rev. Bond who was at the school from 1893-1919 made many changes to the school, especially taking it from 40 pupils to 115 and making it much more of a credible private school. He introduced the teaching of French to the college in 1893, so even though he was a mathematician, he obviously had an appreciation of the wider aspects of education.
