JUBILATE DEO (Psalm 100) O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth from generation to generation. From the Order for Morning Prayer, The Book (Church of Ireland)

Alphabetical Index of Entries in the Registers

i

51-79

INTRODUCTION I first consulted the Strokestown parish registers while researching some 19th century local families, and having benefitted from the accessibility of such genealogical information in another published register in the Anglican Record Project, I decided to contribute a transcription for Strokestown to the series, to make the data more accessible for others. As a novice transcriber, I found it invaluable to work within the structure and methodology established by the Anglican Record Project, and to have the unstinting support and guidance of the Project originator, as editor and co-compiler. While the transcription has been done as carefully as possible, using the stated conventions of the Project, as with all documents of this nature, the original should be consulted if it is essential to confirm that particular entries have been transcribed and indexed accurately. The following points should be borne in mind when using the transcript: Dates All dates have been standardised as follows; day in numbers, month in three letters (abbreviated as necessary), year. Legibility and Spelling Variations in the spelling of the same surname have been retained. Indecipherable or uncertain details, whether due to illegible handwriting or faded ink, are marked by a ? Missing Information A dash ‘–’ is used to indicate that expected information (name, date etc) is absent from the entry.

the

Illiteracy Those who made a mark instead of signing the marriage registers are indicated by an ‘x’ after their name. Additional Information Marginal notes and Registers appear in the text or as footnotes.

Chronological Discrepancies Entries out of chronological order by more than a week or so are in italics. The Index The index lists in alphabetical order all persons who were recorded as baptised, married, mentioned in banns and buried at Strokestown and the linked parishes over the period 1811-1985. Where circumstantial evidence points to entries for more than one event for the same person, they have been included on the same line in the index. In the absence of any such evidence they have been listed separately. Abbreviated Christian names have been transcribed exactly as they appear in the Register. Transcriber’s Observations Baptisms There are gaps in the recording of baptisms (1815-20, 1835-1842 and 1845-47) which, in the absence of civil registration of births until 1864, could have proved awkward for persons who were required to produce baptismal certificates as evidence of age ii

for official purposes. It may be for this reason that two families got a former curate to make retrospective entries in 1857 for nine baptisms of their children, which he had performed in prior years but had not registered at the time. Foundlings Two children baptised in 1832 were described as foundlings, though it is clear from early Vestry minutes that other foundlings were fostered locally or sent to the Foundling Hospital in Dublin. Whether they were not baptised, or baptised but not recorded, is not known. Burials There are also gaps in the burial registers (1823-29, 1834-41 and 1844-47). Standard of Record Keeping Record keeping improved from 1847 with the appointment of the Revd Joseph Morton as Vicar. Some baptisms and burials in the second register are repeated in the third. Statistics The following table of baptisms, marriages and burials by decade reflects the changes in the Protestant population of the Strokestown area over the period covered by the registers (qualified by the under-recording of baptisms and burials prior to 1850). BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND CHURCH Bumlin (or Strokestown) is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon and includes the town of that name, seat of the Mahon family for over three centuries. In 1837 it comprised some 6507 acres (4399 titheable) and was crossed by the new coach road from Dublin to the West. The living was a vicarage in the Diocese of Elphin, in the patronage of the Bishop. The rectory was partly impropriate to the prebendary of Kilgoghlin in Elphin Cathedral. In 1811 the adjoining parishes of Kiltrustan (to the north west) and Lissonuffy (to the south), which had previously been held in plurality, were united to Bumlin to form the Bumlin Union. The ancient church of Bumlin "being ruinous and inconveniently situated", on 8 March 1754 Thomas Mahon MP of Strokestown House conveyed to the Bishop of Elphin an acre of land in Lisroyne, near the centre of the parish and adjoining Strokestown, for the purpose of erecting a new church. In 1813 the Vestry sought a loan of £1,000 from the Board of First Fruits to add a tower and steeple, which had not been built before the church was destroyed, apparently by a storm, in the winter of 1818/19. The present church was built in 1820 with a loan of £2700 from the Board of First Fruits. The architect of the unusual octagonal design was John Lynn, who also worked on Rockingham House and Strokestown House. The floorplan is shown below. The church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was consecrated on 27 August 1820. About the same time the glebe-house was built with a gift of £337 and a loan of £150 from the same Board.

The last service in Strokestown Parish Church was held on 26 June 1977. It was closed and deconsecrated on 6 March 1981 and reopened as a heritage centre in 1982. It is now home to the Co Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Centre, and is well maintained. LINKED PARISHES Kiltrustan is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon and comprised some 6412 acres (4870 titheable) in 1837. It was united to Bumlin in 1811. It contained the ruins of a monastery, with attached burial ground, and a castle. Lissonuffy is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon. It is bounded on the east by the River Shannon and contains the village of Erra. It comprised some 11,670 acres (5022 titheable) in 1837 and was also united to Bumlin in 1811. It contained the ruins of an abbey and an old church, the latter with attached burial ground. Clonfinlough (to the west and south) is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon and comprised some 7894 acres (6283 titheable) in 1837. It was united with Clontuskert in 1731 and would appear to have been held with Bumlin from the early 1850s when the last (nonresident) incumbent left office. Clontuskert (to the south) is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon, on the river Shannon, and at the head of Lough Ree, by which it is bounded on the east and south. It was united with Clonfinlough in 1731. Kilgeffin (to the south) is an ancient parish in Co Roscommon. It is bounded on the east by Slieve Bawn and comprised some 6087 acres (4018 titheable) in 1837. The church was built in 1824, funded partly by a gift of ÂŁ200 from the late Board of First Fruits. It was united to Bumlin in 1874 and the church was closed some time before 1900. Bumlin was effectively united to Elphin on the appointment of the Revd William Blaine as Curate-in-Charge (CinC) in 1934. It was subsequently united to Boyle, the cathedral having been closed in November 1958, as a result of the damage caused during a severe storm in February 1957.
