Welcome to Issue Seven! Dear Member, Welcome to the seventh issue of CR Advantage - your update on everything CR is doing to benefit our Members. In this issue, I share some of my experience of group procurement, and how it can benefit the not-for-profit sector in Australia. Also in this issue, we bring you details of our new relationship with The Good Guys, our special Corporate Travel and IP Telephone offers, and a brand new look for CathNews. We also tell the story of our visit to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney. Church Resources is supporting the Cerebral Palsy Alliance appeal ‘STEPtember ’. It’s an exciting new health and wellness initiative designed to improve your fitness and have a positive impact on the lives of people with cerebral palsy. Steptember is about challenging yourself to take 10,000 steps a day for the whole month of September and in doing so you can help raise funds for The Cerebral Palsy Alliance. Lots of our staff will be participating and I would like to extend an invitation to you to also participate. Visit www.steptember.org.au to find out how. If you’d like to know more about anything you read in this edition, please get in touch - we’d love to help you. With best wishes

Group Procurement:

The challenge of finite resources Church Resources’ CEO Luke Kenny has worked in the not-for-profit sector for the last four years, and worked in government procurement for the ten years prior to that. He explains how group procurement can provide benefit to the not-for-profit sector. Almost all the biggest challenges Not-for-profits face each day lead back to getting the greatest value from finite resources. Regardless of the core mission for the organisation, the money that is available to complete the work is by and large the limiting factor Despite this, there always seems to be an infinite number of additional students to educate, patients to treat and people who require support in the community. The tug-of-war between the infinite work and finite resources makes a daily chore of answering tough questions like: Who will benefit most? What activity will have the greatest impact? What can we afford to do? What can we not afford to do? Some questions are easier to answer than others. This brings me to my point – group procurement. One of the most amazing things I’ve observed since joining the not-for-profit industry in 2009 is that when not-forprofit organisations, small or large, work together and consider new ways of doing things, we can accomplish some amazing things. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 900,000 people are employed by or volunteer for a not-for-profit organisation – one in nine of all em-

4

ployed people; the not-for-profit industry represents more than 4% of Australia’ s gross domestic product ($43 billion) spread across 60,000 organisations. Not –for-profit organisations contribute a greater percentage to the economy than tourism or agriculture – however, the fragmentation across lots of smaller organisations means we don’t have the buying power of a government department, or large commercial organisation. The concepts underpinning group procurement can be difficult to wrap your mind around – at least at first glance. In their simplest form, a group procurement arrangement is when two or more organisations come together and agree to purchase from a single supplier ad negotiate with that supplier a discount based on the volume of the two or more organisations. The benefits can be enormous. In some cases over the last four years, my team and I have been able to realise savings of over 50% compared to retain on some categories. Unfortunately, group procurement isn’t all clear sailing. There can be challenges relating to existing arrangements with different suppliers, staff wanting to stay with

incumbent suppliers and managing compliance within your organisation. Each time you bring another organisation into a group procurement arrangement, these problems just keep multiplying. Procurement professionals are very experienced in managing supplier agreements but even those organisations fortunate enough to have their own in-hose procurement professionals can struggle with the added complexity of managing not only their own stakeholdwers but the stakeholders of their counterparts at the

other participating organisations. Group procurement is at the core of what we do at CR: We simplify many of the complexities in forming supplier agreements, performing due diligence and negotiating discounts – we try to make group procurement accessible to all organisations, regardless of their location, size or their amount of spend in each category. Bringing together the collective spend of the whole not-for-profit industry allows us to support new ideas and directions through the group procurement model.

If you or your Procurement Manager would like to discuss how best to tackle group- procurement in your organisation, please email marketing@cr.org.au

CR visits The Children’s Hospital at Westmead Last month, CR visited The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to proudly present our $2,540 cheque raised through the efforts of CR staff and their friends and families. Melissa Morris describes the visit. It’s a humbling experience seeing the faces of children who need care and is wonderful to know our efforts are so greatly appreciated! From the minute you walk in the door of the hospital, you know you are in a place designed with children in mind. We were warmly welcomed and given a full tour of the oncology department hearing stories of children along the way. The hospital treats the entire family and an example was given of a patient’s brother recalling sports day and the Christmas party, clearly highlighting the journey he shared with his sister. Some of the children there do not have long to live and the hospital go above and beyond to make their time as enjoyable as possible. Examples were given of the children’s joy and excitement at being able to see the fish in the tank, watch TV in numerous rooms and being amazed at the wonderful artwork in every direction you look; all this was made possible with donations such as ours. At CR, we have six core values of respect, innovation, ethics, purpose, care and enjoyment and we really do live by these in our work and approach to everything we do. We are a not-forprofit organisation with our Members in the centre of everything we do. It’s living by these values to guide our decisions and behaviours that allow us to really benefit our Members. Each month we focus on one of our core values to highlight it across the business and in June 2013, for our month of purpose, decided to create a raffle in order to raise money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The Hospital is a leading stand-alone service dedicated to paediatrics and is located at Westmead, about 28 km from Sydney city.

8

The entire team of 40 staff at CR got onboard and set about approaching family and friends in order to sell as many raffle tickets as possible. It was testament to the true nature of the staff at CR and the strong sense of purpose, that we were able to sell 1,250 tickets and achieve a total of over $2,500 to benefit the children. CR used our resources and managed to secure three outstanding prizes for the raffle. First prize donated by our new Preferred Partner, the Good Guys, was a flat screen TV. Second prize was donated by CR and the latest iPad and third was movie tickets. We had three very lucky winners, two of which were CR Staff. Congratulations again to Antony Neylan, a CathNews Editor and Melissa Morris, a Marketing Executive along with the friend of staff Member, as our third winner.

Thank you to all our friends and family that supported us at CR to make this donation possible.

An exciting new look for CathNews For three months, the CathNews team had been up to its nose in terms such as ’navigation’, ‘functionality’, ‘system acceptance’, and much, much, more . CR worked with the website developer, Fatfish, to create a new website home for CathNews, CathNews Perspectives, and Bulletin Notes. The world of e-publications has exploded since CathNews was founded by Fr Michael Kelly, SJ , around 1999 (CathNews never had a physical form, and has only ever existed in virtual form). These days e-publications are everywhere, with links to social media from Facebook to Twitter, RSS feeds to Reddit. Our redesign has spread across its social media channels as well. With the relaunch comes a great new feature – Mass on Demand. From St Mary’s in North Sydney, one of the three Parishes of Our Lady of the Way, this link will enable anyone to have an experience of daily Mass on their own computer or handheld device. This MoD service was part of the Church Resources’ ConnectCare project, run in conjunction with the Federal government. It was originally

12

created to ensure that people who were isolated either by age, infirmity, or distance, could see Mass daily. As part of that project, Church Resources has provided video-conferencing kits to the Mercy Aged Care facility at Nudgee in Brisbane, two aged care facilities in Sawtell, three Calvary sites, and two for St Vincents and Mater Health Sydney – including one for the Chapel of the St Vincent’s public hospital in Darlinghurst. Imagine the relief of a Catholic who is waiting in the middle of the night for news of a loved one in Emergency or Surgery, and being able to go into the Chapel, and switch on the Mass. Imagine if a lapsed Catholic, or someone or another faith, were comforted by this Mass on Demand service. It is a marvellous, visionary concept by our founder, who in the early days saw it coming from anywhere in the world. So in Australia, there is no way you need miss Mass. The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, though CathNews and Church Resources, provides Mass electronically three different ways. There is Mass for You at Home, on one of the secondary 10 channels, at 5.30am on Sunday. One of Australia’s longest running TV programs, it is funded by the Archdiocese of Melbourne and Church Resources. There is also live-streamed Mass from the Cathedral Church of the Broken Bay Diocese in Waitara, which you can click on to every morning via CathNews.

And now there is Mass on Demand. Mass when you need it, any time during the day. The first Mass from St Mary’s every day will be recorded, uploaded, and made available on YouTube. The Mass will remain available for 24 hours, or until another Mass is recorded and uploaded. (If you subscribe to the CathNews service, you will be advised when a new Mass is available online.) When you have a chance to look over the new CathNews livery, and test out the new features, please write and tell us what you think. We can draw on your experience and feedback to help us improve our service to you, and the Church, even more.

The new CathNews website, and Mass On Demand, can be found at www.cathnews.com
