Dear Professor, We are pleased to present the Fall 2019 Academic Catalog featuring Zondervan Academic and Zondervan Reflective releases from September 2019 through April 2020 as well as key titles from the recent past that still need to be kept in mind. As always, our goal is to • publish across the broad spectrum of biblical, theological, and ministry-related disciplines; • publish works that stay abreast of current scholarship, written by the emerging generation of scholars as well as seasoned, proven scholars; and • publish works that model irenic discussion and represent a variety of viewpoints, and yet stay within the boundaries of our commitments to the historic doctrines of orthodox Christianity and biblical authority. We have three new members on the Zondervan Academic team—Amy Bigler, Senior Manager of Public Relations; Matthew Miller, Marketing Manager; and Emily Voss, Senior Marketing Associate. All three bring a wealth of experience and expertise and to their new roles, and we are so glad to have them working alongside the rest of the team. Four Portraits, One Jesus, 2nd Edition
New Edition
A Survey of Jesus and the Gospels Mark L. Strauss $59.99 | $35.99 Hardcover - 608 pages ISBN 9780310528678
The second edition of Four Portraits, One Jesus has been updated throughout to meet the needs of today’s students. It is a thorough yet accessible introduction to the four biblical Gospels and their subject: the life and person of Jesus. Like different artists rendering the same subject using different styles and points of view, the Gospels paint four highly distinctive portraits of the same remarkable Jesus.
MARK L. STRAUSS (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is University Professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary. He is the author of several books including Mark in the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament, Luke in the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Background Commentary series, and Introducing Jesus.

These factors are not mutually exclusive, of course, and various needs and concerns may have motivated each gospel writer. I will discuss various proposals made by scholars as we examine the purpose and theme of each gospel in part 3.
T HE G OSPEL AUDIENCES: TO W HOM W ERE THE G OSPELS W RITTEN? There is almost universal agreement that the Gospels were written primarily to believers rather than to unbelievers. But who were the specific audiences? None of the Gospels identify their recipients except Luke, who addresses his work to a certain Theophilus (1:3). Yet even Theophilus is probably the patron who sponsored Luke’s gospel, rather than the primary or exclusive recipient. Luke surely expected his work to be read by others.

This completely revised and updated second edition of The New Testament in Antiquity skillfully develops how Jewish, Hellenistic, and Roman cultures formed the essential environment in which the New Testament authors wrote their books and letters. Understanding the land, history, and culture of the ancient world brings remarkable new insights into how we read the New Testament itself.
GARY M. BURGE (PhD, King’s College, Aberdeen University) is visiting professor of New Testament at Calvin Theological Seminary. He has authored a number of books, including Who Are God’s People in the Middle East?, John, and Letters of John in the NIV Application Commentary series.

in the local synagogue each morning from age five or six and each afternoon worked at his father’s trade. Joseph was a tektōn (Mark 6:3), which really refers to a “builder” who works in wood, metal, or stone. Such multiskilled workers were needed for construction, particularly for cutting stone, which made up almost all construction in Galilee. Hence, Jesus knew hard labor and probably followed his father to nearby Sepphoris, working there to rebuild the new Greek city. GALILEE

Jesus’s birth and early life
The “shepherd’s” fields outside Bethlehem. Today they are in the village of Beit Sahour and still host scenes such as this.
Jesus’s crown of thorns may have come from a palm. The fronds were trimmed away on one side and the longer fronds stood upright creating a halo of palms radiating like the sun. This imitated the god Helios (the sun god) and was used widely by Roman rulers. Jesus was thus mocked with an imitation royal crown whose palms were not trimmed, leaving sharp thorns. Jesus then left the city and entered an olive orchard not far from the road that would take him back to Bethany. Here he prayed fervently and was burdened by the dread of his coming suffering (Mark 14:32 – 42). The evening was interrupted when Judas, who had received thirty silver pieces (Matt. 26:14 – 16), led a determined band of men to arrest Jesus. Priests, temple police (Luke 22:52), and even a detachment of Roman soldiers (John 18:3, 12) arrived with weapons and torches. With the signal of a kiss, Judas identified Jesus, and he was arrested. Jesus’s trial was quickly carried out since the authorities feared a furious reaction from the masses, many of whom came from Galilee (Luke 22:2). The high priest Caiaphas gathered a cadre of leaders at his residence, and his father-in-law, the now-retired high priest Annas, began the interrogation (John 18:13). This was followed by witnesses who made unsuccessful charges against Jesus (Matt. 26:60). Because the witnesses contradicted themselves about details (Mark 14:56), Caiaphas himself entered the fray. He first prodded Jesus to speak in his own self-defense, hoping to find some incriminating evidence on his own lips. Finally, he asked him forthrightly: “Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God” (Matt. 26:63). It was considered blasphemy to claim divine honors for oneself. Jesus answered by describing himself as an apocalyptic judge who would possess a heavenly role with God (Mark 14:62). This was enough. After calling for a test vote, Caiaphas handed Jesus over to the temple police to be guarded until morning. For each gospel writer, the scene is tragic. Jesus was alone, and even his leading disciple, Peter, who had followed and stood outside the priest’s house and

Ritual Washing and the Baptism of John Ritual washing was common among both the Jews and the gentiles. Initiates into the mysteries of the Egyptian deity Isis underwent a form of baptism. purificatory sprinkling.” Within Judaism, ritual washing was well known (Lev. 13 – 17; Num. 19; see sidebar on “Ritual Baths” in ch. 8). This immersion pool, or mikveh, from Masada was used for ritual washing. Religious baths were common within both the Jewish and gentile worlds. John’s “pool” was the Jordan River. Later Jewish theology prescribed ritual washing for gentiles who wished to become Jewish proselytes (b. Yebah 46a; 71a), though

scholars debate whether this practice was observed during the first century. Josephus provides further testimony that John linked baptism with the call to righteous behavior: “That the washing [with water] would be acceptable to him, sins [only], but for the purification of the body; supposing still that the soul was thoroughly purified beforehand by righteousness” (Ant. 18.5.2 [117]).

Like Matthew, Luke recounts both the genealogy and temptation of Jesus (3:23 – 4:13; see ch. 8), after which Jesus begins his public ministry in Galilee in the power of the Spirit (4:14 – 15). In his genealogy, Luke, a gentile, underscores the universality of Christ as Savior and Lord of all human beings.

Luke introduces Jesus’s Galilean ministry with a summary statement (4:14 – 15), which highlights characteristic themes in Luke: Jesus carries out his ministry in the power of the Spirit (4:14), he engages in a vigorous teaching ministry (4:15a; cf. 6:17 – 49), and “everyone praised” his ministry (4:15b). The first full picture of Jesus’s teaching takes place in the synagogue in Jesus’s hometown, Nazareth (4:16 – 29). The reading of Scripture and an exposition were common components of a synagogue service. Jesus presents himself as the Spirit-anointed prophet who fulfills Isaiah 61:1 – 2 and 58:6. After the reading he proclaims that the time of fulfillment has come (4:21). The blessings described are the signs of the messianic age — the Spirit has returned and is upon him, the good news has come, and the liberation of Israel is

Reading Revelation in Context John’s Apocalypse and Second Temple Judaism Ben C. Blackwell, John K. Goodrich, and Jason Maston, Editors “The present volume offers a welcome series of accessible studies that illustrate both the importance and the possibility of throwing light on what has been and continues to be one of the most influential writings in the New Testament on Christian and even contemporary culture: the book of Revelation.” —from the Foreword by LOREN T. STUCKENBRUCK
Reading Revelation in Context brings together short, accessible essays that compare and contrast the visions and apocalyptic imagery of the book of Revelation with various texts from Second Temple Jewish literature.
NEW RELEASE SEPTEMBER 2019 $21.99 | $13.19 Softcover - 208 pages ISBN 9780310566236
Going beyond an introduction that merely surveys historical events and theological themes, Reading Revelation in Context examines individual passages in Second Temple Jewish literature in order to illuminate the context of Revelation’s theology and the meaning and potency of John’s visions. Following the narrative progression of Revelation, each chapter (1) pairs a major unit of the Apocalypse with one or more sections of a thematically related Jewish text, (2) introduces and explores the historical and theological nuances of the comparator text, and (3) shows how the ideas in the comparator text illuminate those expressed in Revelation.

It should provide a solid step forward in the ongoing conversations.” —from the Foreword by N. T. WRIGHT
In recent years, a number of New Testament scholars engaged in academic historical Jesus studies have concluded that such scholarship cannot yield secure and illuminating conclusions about its subject, arguing that the search for a historically “authentic” Jesus has run aground. Jesus, Skepticism, and the Problem of History brings together a stellar lineup of New Testament scholars who contend that historical Jesus scholarship is far from dead. The skeptical use of the tools of contemporary historical methods to fashion a Jesus contrary to the one portrayed in the Gospels is methodologically unsound and theologically unacceptable. But, these criteria, though flawed, are still useful when properly formulated and applied with other helpful elements, yielding positive results about the gospel accounts and the historical narrative in Acts. Jesus, Skepticism, and the Problem of History presents a nuanced and vitally needed alternative to the skeptical extremes of revisionist Jesus scholarship. It challenges historical methods that call into question the Jesus of the Gospels or that deny the possibility of using historical methods to learn about Him. The quest, usefully pursued, gives us another means by which we can appreciate Jesus in the face of contention about him.

Basics of Hebrew Discourse: A Guide to Working with Hebrew Prose and Poetry by Matthew H. Patton, Frederic Clarke Putnam, and Miles V. Van Pelt is a syntax resource for intermediate Hebrew students. This basics book introduces students to the principles and exegetical benefits of discourse analysis (text linguistics) when applied to biblical Hebrew prose and poetry. Where standard Hebrew reference grammars have traditionally worked to describe the relationship between words and phrases within discrete clauses (micro syntax), discourse analysis works to describe those relationships that exist between clauses and texts (macro syntax). This resource fills a needed gap for intermediate Hebrew students and gives them the tools to work with Hebrew syntax on the macro level. Professors and pastors working with Hebrew will also find this one-of-a-kind resource highly valuable.
MATTHEW H. PATTON (PhD, Wheaton College) is the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Vandalia, Ohio. FREDERIC CLARKE PUTNAM (PhD, Annenberg Research Institute) is associate professor of biblical studies at The Templeton Honors College at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania. MILES V. VAN PELT (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Hayes Belcher, Jr. Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi.
The updated second edition of the Graded Reader of Biblical Hebrew: A Guide to Reading the Hebrew Bible by Miles V. Van Pelt and Gary D. Pratico is a structured introduction to the reading of Biblical Hebrew texts. This book is the ideal next-step resource for the student who has completed a year of elementary Hebrew or the pastor or scholar whose language skills need some refreshing. Through these readings, students will be able to review basic Hebrew grammar, become familiar with issues of intermediate grammar, and gain confidence in handling the Hebrew text. The readings chosen for inclusion, which are arranged generally in order of increasing difficulty, span the whole of the Old Testament and represent some of the most important Old Testament texts from the standpoint of biblical history, theology, and exegesis. Parsing exercises are included with each reading, and there is room for readers to write their own English translation.
MILES V. VAN PELT (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Hayes Belcher, Jr. Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as academic dean and director of the Summer Institute for Biblical Languages. GARY D. PRATICO (ThD, Harvard Divinity School) is Professor of Old Testament Emeritus at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where he taught Hebrew for thirty-four years.

The NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible is printed in exclusive Zondervan NIV Comfort Print® typeface. Expertly designed specifically to be used for the New International Version (NIV) text, Comfort Print offers an easier reading experience that complements the most widely read modern-English Bible translation. The New International Version (NIV) is the world’s bestselling modern-English Bible translation—accurate, readable, and clear, yet rich with the detail found in the original languages. The NIV is the result of over 50 years of work by the Committee on Bible Translation, who oversee the efforts of many contributing scholars. Representing the spectrum of evangelicalism, the translators come from a wide range of denominations and various countries and continually review new research in order to ensure the NIV remains at the forefront of accessibility, relevance, and authority.
Available February 2020 New American Standard Bible Zondervan is honored to continue its long-standing relationship with the Lockman Foundation in publishing the New American Standard Bible. Even while the publishing world eagerly awaits an update to the NASB text, we are delighted to be able to continue to publish new, beautiful Bibles in the NASB 95 text even after the NASB 2020 is in print. Zondervan has once again partnered with 2K/Denmark to create an exclusive Zondervan Comfort PrintŽ typeface—this time for the NASB. Both the new 95 editions as well as the forthcoming 2020 editions will be set in this new typeface. The first wave of new NASB 95 Bibles will appear in February 2020, while the first wave of NASB 2020 Bibles can be expected in spring 2021.

The
Story of God
Bible Commentary Emphasizing the historical distance between the contexts of the biblical world and contemporary culture, Zondervan’s highly anticipated The Story of God Bible Commentary series provides pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and small group leaders a clear and compelling exposition of the biblical text in the context of the Bible’s overarching story. Offering a new type of application commentary for today’s context, The Story of God Bible Commentary series explains and illuminates Scripture as God’s Story, with each biblical text examined as embedded in its canonical and historical setting,in order to foster discernment in living the story faithfully and creatively with and for the church in the 21st century.

THEOLOGY 49
A Practical Primer on Theological Method Table Manners for Discussing God, His Works, and His Ways Glenn R. Kreider and Michael J. Svigel “An accessible and well-informed introduction to the study of theology.” WILLIAM A. DYRNESS, Fuller Theological Seminary — “I’m eager to put this into the hands of the burgeoning theologians in my classroom.” AMY PEELER, Wheaton College — “Blending lively prose with robust doctrine, this volume is one I will recommend widely and enthusiastically for years to come.” —KAREN SWALLOW PRIOR, Liberty University “This well-crafted handbook is full of solid, wise, and practical Christian guidance for Christian students in theology.” —DOUGLAS A. SWEENEY, Beeson Divinity School “I cannot recommend this volume highly enough—Take up and read!” MALCOLM B. YARNELL III, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary — Around a table sit men and women with distinct roles: The Interpreter, the Theologian, the Virtuous, the Philosopher, the Scientist, the Artist, the Minister, and the Historian. Each is ready to engage in a passionate discussion centered on God, his works, and his ways. Regardless of which role you play at the same table, you’re invited. You simply need to pull up a chair and join the conversation. But how? What do you say when you take your seat? Where do you start? What are the rules of the dialogue? A Practical Primer on Theological Method will help you answer these questions. This primer is not only a “how-to” manual for doing theology, but also a handbook of etiquette for doctrinal discussions with other believers. This popular-level introductory text presents the proper manner, mode, and means of engaging fruitfully in theology.
MICHAEL J. SVIGEL (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) is chair and professor of theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary. He is author of several books, including RetroChristianity, the Exploring Christian Theology trilogy, and The Center and the Source. GLENN R. KREIDER (PhD, Dallas Theological Seminary) is professor of theological studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and editor in chief of Bibliotheca Sacra. He is editor, collaborator, or author of several books, including God with Us, the Exploring Christian Theology trilogy, and Eschatology: Biblical, Historical, and Practical Approaches.

THEOLOGY 51
Guide Your Students to Understand Theology’s Relevance We know it’s not easy. Theology today is faced with increasing amounts of religious and theological pluralism. What is distinctive about Christian theology? Why do these ideas matter? And the biggest question of all: Who cares? Key aspects of orthodox theology are seen as speculative and irrelevant to “authentic” Christianity and to personal spirituality.
Get more than just a new textbook. While not succumbing to the pragmatism of the age, Engaging Theology shows that key elements of Christian theology are grounded in an integrated worldview and are essential for spiritual formation. Engaging Theology is ideal for students and everyday people living in a post-Christian era to help them seriously engage with the Christian faith. We have developed teaching resources for you that help provide a robust classroom experience, leaving you time to do what matters most—interacting with your students.
“Introductory theology textbooks are a dime-a-dozen. What separates Engaging Theology from the rest of the pack is it is genuinely engaging and in multiple ways: it engages the reader with its lively prose and common sense speak; it engages the Christian tradition in faithful and informed ways; it engages the contemporary world beyond theology; and it engages practice as it speaks into ministry, vocation, and praxis. Theology is on the move, and Blackwell and Hatchet are aware of this and help readers navigate the terrain in responsible and informative ways. This is the sort of introductory texts students are now looking for and need.” —MYK HABETS, School of Theology, Laidlaw College, Auckland, New Zealand

The Third Person of the Trinity Plenary speakers will be: The claim that God acts in the world is surely a basic theological claim, but it is one that has been construed in a wide variety of ways in the Christian theological tradition. In some accounts, God appears as the largest, first, and most powerful agent. In others, God is portrayed as the transcendent ground of all finite agency, while never acting on the same plane as other agents.

The Mosaic of Atonement An Integrated Approach to Christ’s Work Joshua M. McNall
Five Views on the Extent of the Atonement Adam J. Johnson, General Editor
$22.99 | $13.79 Softcover - 304 pages ISBN 9780310527718
$34.99 | $20.99 Softcover - 336 pages ISBN 9780310097648
“An ideal primer for anyone wanting to get a grip on the dense debates about the nature of the atonement.” —MICHAEL F. BIRD, Ridley Collegeheological Understanding Modern treatments of atonement doctrine often tend toward one of two extremes: either a defensive hierarchy, in which one model is singled out as most important; or a disconnected plurality, in which multiple images are affirmed but with no order or arrangement. In contrast to these imbalances, Joshua McNall argues for an ordered reintegration of four classic “pieces” of atonement doctrine through the image of a Christ-shaped “mosaic”: • Recapitulation—the foundational “feet” • Penal substitution (and vicarious representation)—the beating “heart” • Christus Victor—the crowning “head” • Moral influence—the beckoning and restraining “hands” While no one model of atonement is set above or against the others, McNall notes particular ways in which the “pieces” of Christ’s work support one another.
JOSHUA M. MCNALL (PhD, University of Manchester) is assistant professor of theology at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
For whom did Christ die? Who may be saved? are questions of perennial interest and importance for the Christian faith. Going beyond simple Reformed vs. non-Reformed understandings, this volume elevates the conversation to a broader plane, including contributors who represent the breadth of Christian tradition: • Eastern Orthodox: Andrew Louth (Durham University) • Roman Catholic: Matthew Levering (Mundelein Seminary) • Traditional Reformed: Michael Horton (Westminster Seminary) • Wesleyan: Fred Sanders (Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University) • Barthian Universalism: Tom Greggs (University of Aberdeen) This book serves not only as a single-volume resource for engaging the views on the extent of the atonement but also as a catalyst for understanding and advancing a balanced approach to this core Christian doctrine.
ADAM J. JOHNSON (PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is an assistant professor of theology in the Torrey Honors Institute at Biola University.

Crucifixion of Jesus, called by his Jewish disciples the Christ (meaning “Messiah” or “anointed one”). Shortly thereafter, the disciples begin to claim publicly that Jesus had risen to life and that this resurrection was a sign of the present reality and future hope of the kingdom of God. Their message is met with resistance in Jerusalem but also attracts many followers to the Way of Christ.
• The apostle Paul active in Arabia, Tarsus, Cyprus, central Asia Minor, Macedonia, Corinth, Ephesus, and elsewhere, preaching primarily to non-Jewish gentiles. • Jerusalem and Antioch are major bases for the movement. The word church (from the Greek meaning “assembled for a common purpose” is in common usage.
Romans occupy Jerusalem and destroy the Jewish temple, creating a diaspora of Jews and Christians.
Bishop Clement of Rome’s First Epistle accepts Paul’s letters as Scripture along with the Hebrew Old Testament.

The term Christian is in common circulation by the time Emperor Nero (37–68) institutes the first official state persecution. According to tradition, Peter and Paul were among those martyred at this time. The fierceness of Nero’s persecution and the behaviour of the Christians in the face of injustice are said to have provoked feelings of sympathy and admiration amongst the wider Roman population.
The Book of Revelation (the final book in the New Testament) most likely addresses churches under persecution by Emperor Domitian (c. 51–96).

The route to the Holy Land required the assistance of Venetian ships. When the crusaders could not afford to pay the charges demanded of them, their leader Boniface of Montferrat (c. 1150–1207), and the Venetian ruler Enrico Dandolo (c. 1107–1205) agreed instead to join forces and invade Constantinople. In 1204, against the express commands of the pope and of some of the commanders present, the armies of the Christian West sacked and conquered the principal city of the Christian East. The Greek patriarch was removed from power, and the Venetian Thomas Morosini (dates unknown) was installed in his place. With the creation of the Latin Empire of Constantinople, the advance of the Fourth Crusade on the Holy Land was abandoned and a union of sorts between the Eastern and Western Churches was established under Innocent. However, the situation was unpopular, unstable,

Epic: An Around-the-World Journey through Christian History Tim Challies History doesn’t have to be boring and stuffy. And the history of Christianity is not. It is filled with interesting people and events. Though many of these events happened long ago and the people we remember are long dead, there are objects that remain--objects that whisper a story to us, if we are willing to listen. Join author and pastor Tim Challies as he embarks on a three-year journey spanning multiple continents and some of the most unusual places in the world. Challies introduces you to thirty-three carefully selected objects that helps readers understand the long and complicated history of Christianity in a unique and creative way. Beginning with Jesus and the early church, Challies looks at the importance of graffiti on an ancient jail cell, the creedal significance of a carving on a museum statue, and the enduring importance of ancient manuscripts and books. From pulpits and paintings, posters and pieces of machinery, this book is a helpful introduction to the story of Christianity. It is also a wonderful complement to the Epic DVD, a ten session video series that takes viewers on location to the objects highlighted in the book. Used together, they serve as a helpful resource for students and anyone interested in working through an overview of the history of Christianity.

66 RACE & RELIGION
The Color of Compromise The Truth about the American Church’s Complicity in Racism Jemar Tisby The Color of Compromise takes readers on a historical journey: from America’s early colonial days through slavery and the Civil War, covering the tragedy of Jim Crow laws and the victories of the Civil Rights era, to today’s Black Lives Matter movement. Author Jemar Tisby reveals the obvious— and the far more subtle—ways the American church has compromised what the Bible teaches about human dignity and equality.
$21.99 | $13.19 Hardcover - 256 pages ISBN 9780310597261
Tisby uncovers the roots of sustained injustice in the American church, highlighting the cultural and institutional tables that need to be turned in order to bring about real and lasting progress between black and white people. Through a story-driven survey of American Christianity’s racial past, he exposes the concrete and chilling ways people of faith have actively worked against racial justice, as well as the deafening silence of the white evangelical majority. Tisby shows that while there has been progress in fighting racism, historically the majority of the American church has failed to speak out against this evil. This ongoing complicity is a stain upon the church, and sadly, it continues today. Tisby does more than diagnose the problem, however. He charts a path forward with intriguing ideas that further the conversation as he challenges us to reverse these patterns and systems of complicity with bold, courageous, and immediate action. The Color of Compromise provides an accurate diagnosis for a racially divided American church and suggests creative ways to foster a more equitable and inclusive environment among God’s people.
JEMAR TISBY (BA, University of Notre Dame; MDiv, Reformed Theological Seminary) is the president of The Witness: A Black Christian Collective, where he writes about race, religion, politics, and culture. He is also the cohost of the Pass the Mic podcast. He has spoken nationwide at conferences, and his writing has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, and CNN. He is studying for a PhD in history at the University of Mississippi with a focus on race, religion, and social movements in the twentieth century.

70 WORLD RELIGIONS
Do Christians, Muslims, and Jews Worship the Same God?: Four Views Ronnie P. Campbell, Jr., Christopher Gnanakan, General Editors During a time of global conflict, the theological question of whether Muslims, Jews, and Christians worship the same God carries political baggage. Is the God of ISIS the same as the God of Israel? Do Sunni Muslims and Protestant Christians pray to the same Creator and Sustainer of the universe? In this Counterpoints volume, edited by Ronnie P. Campbell, Jr., and Christopher Gnanakan, five leading scholars present the main perspectives on this question, demonstrating how to think carefully about an issue where opinions differ and confusion abounds. They examine related subtopics such as the difference between God being referentially the same and essentially the same, what “the same” means when referring to God, the significance of the Trinity in this discussion, whether religious inclusivism is inferred by certain understandings of God’s sameness, and the appropriateness of interfaith worship. The four main views, along with the scholars presenting them, are: NEW RELEASE OCTOBER 2019 $22.99 | $11.99 Softcover - 272 pages ISBN 9780310538035

Cumming stresses that finding common ground is key, while Shenk advocates for a respectful focus on differences. Insightful, gracious, and relevant, Do Christians, Muslims, and Jews Worship the Same God? sheds light on one of the most important theological issues of our day.

Our decisions determine our lives. Invest in a company that goes bankrupt and you lose your life savings. Say the wrong thing in an interview and you miss the job of the lifetime. Make no decisions and you miss every opportunity. In today’s rapidly changing world, the cost of poor decisions (and no decisions) is higher than ever.
Feedback and evaluation, both of oneself and by others, are the lifeblood of a successful ministry experience. In A Guide to Theological Reflection, experienced practical ministry professors Jim Wilson and Earl Waggoner introduce the processes and tools of theological reflection for ministry.
In How to Make Big Decisions Wisely, author and scholar Alan Ehler lays out a clear approach to making big decisions based on the Bible and recent discoveries in neuroscience and decision science. He presents a simple, four-step process that can be followed to make any kind of decision, whether personal, professional, or relational.
Effective evaluation includes critique and potential course correction for the honest and willing minister, as well as positive affirmation of how one’s desires influence good ministry decisions. A Guide to Theological Reflection introduces tools by which a minister can interact with his or her own thoughts, beliefs, and feelings; external feedback, such as that of a ministry supervisor; and Scripture to inform deep and transformative theological reflection.
Making big decisions can rewrite lives, careers, families, churches, and businesses. A lot is at stake. Learn how to choose well.
ALAN EHLER (DMin, George Fox Evangelical Seminary) is professor and dean of Barnett College of Ministry and Theology at Southeastern University.
Designed as a textbook for practical ministry courses and theological field education, A Guide to Theological Reflection can also be used in ministry contexts. It provides guidance for students, ministers-intraining, mentors, and advisors, laying a theoretical foundation for theological reflection and demonstrating step-by-step how to practice it well.
JIM L. WILSON (DMin, Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary) is professor of leadership formation and director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Gateway Seminary. EARL WAGGONER (PhD, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as dean of Biblical Studies and Theology at Colorado Christian University.

White noise is a sound-masking tool designed to cover up the things that “distract” us. And while white-noise can occasionally be helpful, there are times when the white noise in our lives drowns out the voices we need to hear. That’s what happens to many leaders. We learn to tune-out distractions, but end up growing deaf to the inner desires and issues that we need to listen to. There are common white noises in leadership and ministry that we use to mask our unpleasant emotions and ignore the desires deep inside of us. Our increasingly busy lives, the numbing nature of entertainment and social media, and the urgency of ministry itself all work together to create a toxic cocktail of emotional distraction. Multiplying the problem is our emotional incompetence. Leaders are more anxious, stressed, and depressed than ever before. Emotional healing begins with emotional awareness. Being able to identify and understand our emotions requires some countercultural practices. Spiritual disciplines of fasting, meditation, Sabbath keeping, prayer, and hospitality are practices intended to create space for emotional evaluation and exploration. How to Lead in a World of Distraction is a guide to help readers listen to themselves, to recognize what their emotions, their body, and their spirit are saying to them by turning down the kudzu of white noise threatening to control their life.
