Selecting a teenage Driver’S FirSt car Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among U.S. teenagers, accounting for more than one in three deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The good news is that, with a sturdy car and some well-ingrained safety lessons, many of these crashes are largely preventable. As the parent of a teenager, many mothers and fathers are reticent to have their children join the millions of drivers on the nation’s roadways. A teen driver can test one’s nerves. Once a teenager receives his or her license, the family will have to reassess their automotive needs or risk fighting over the family automobile somewhat regularly.

Industry experts agree that there are some tips parents can follow when selecting a teen’s first car. Shop for pre-owned vehicles. Most families are already feeling the heat of overtaxed budgets. Another car payment could be unaffordable. Plus, insurance premiums

DiD You know? Three Types of Distractions The United States Department of Transportation defines three main types of distracted driving: Visual, manual and cognitive. Texting is considered one of the more dangerous forms of distracted driving because it involves all three main types. To text, drivers must take their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel and their mind off of driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that distracted driving is a significant concern, as 20 percent of injury crashes in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving. Eighteen percent of fatalities in distraction-related crashes involved reports of a cell phone as the distraction. Thieves Prefer Older Vehicles New car owners often place a premium on protecting their cars from thieves, but thieves tend to prefer older vehicles. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the most stolen car in 2010 was the 1994 Honda Accord. And that top spot was not an aberration. The 1995 Honda Civic was the second most stolen car in 2010, finishing one spot ahead of the 1991 Toyota Camry. The NICB notes improved anti-theft technology as one of the main reasons for declining theft rates, which dropped 7.2 percent between 2009 and 2010. That improved technology is likely a big reason why thieves are targeting older vehicles that don’t benefit from those improvements. One of the more influential technological advancements that’s helped reduce auto theft is an electronic chip in newer cars. These chips prevent usable keys from being easily made at a hardware store, meaning a car thief won’t be able to start the car even with a copied key. Airbags Save Thousands of Lives Yearly Airbags were invented in the early 1950s by John W. Hetrick, an industrial engineer and member of the U.S. Navy. It wasn’t until roughly 20 years later that airbags began being used in mass-produced autos. Nowadays, airbags have become an instrumental part of a vehicle’s safety system, offering extra protection in crashes. Each year, thousands of lives are saved thanks in part to airbags. However, airbags are not without some measure of danger. It is estimated that airbags deploy at between 100 to 300 mph and in mere milliseconds. The force of the airbag can cause injuries to the face and head. But such injuries pale in comparison to those the airbags protect drivers and passengers against.
