One Hour with Grandma I visited my grandma in the 2018 winter. We shared lunch and conversation over an hour. She has been living in the family ancestral house, which was built in the 1800s in southern China, since she was married in 1946. She is now 96 years old and has been living alone for 5 years. Thus I want to spend as much time as I can with her. As her granddaughter, I wanted to capture the fleeting moments I shared with her. As a photographer, I decided to keep all of her essences alive with imageries: the pots that she used when she was married into the family, the narrow alleys that are filled with her everyday footprints, the old-fashioned coal stove that she used for making soup for her children, and her smile when I ran toward her from afar.

This series of photos includes the portrait of my grandma and her living space. I used black and white squares for still lives as well as utilizing color to highlight my grandma and objects that are connected to her through time. There was another reason for using colors on my grandma. Traditional Chinese culture believes that only dead people’s pictures are in black and white. I wanted to introduce the vibrant yet tranquil life on the other side of the globe. There the traditional rural architecture of southern China and the decorations that reflect the Communist influence in the 1900s stand still. I also wanted to emphasize my grandma’s anticipation of interacting with her children and grandchildren. One Hour with Grandma 4

Anxiety in Paths of Hope: Perception to Vision This group of photos is part of the project with four other photographers who were born in China and came to US seeking better education and opportunities. We want to share our expression of complex emotional experiences through our lens. It is often overwhelmingly scary, lonely, and it takes up a lot of encourage to find our path towards our roles and goals. We hope we could evoke people’s awareness on how non-natives live through their everyday life in this new piece of land.

When walking in city streets, sometimes I feel like I am having an adventure in a dream: running in the cold concrete jungle and complex geometry space. The sounds of car horns, the flashes of neon lights, the whispers of the passersby; everywhere is a delusive scene. I ask myself, “Should I keep going until I find the real light or wait for this chimeric scene to fall off and switch to another parallel world?” Anxiety in Path of Hope 9

Day Dream This is a collaburation project with an illustration artist, I provide the photo part. We explore the positive and negative space within photographs and fill them with dream-like subjects. The combination of black and white photographs depicting the mundane world, which grows more tiring and exhausting with each passing second, behind the colorful graphics on top, an entirely new experience is created. As the reality burdens our shoulders, our dreams allow us to express what we love and what hope for.
Whether we’re dozing off on the train, falling asleep while waiting for the bus or wanting to pass out getting off out of a car, we always have something else we have to do or somewhere else we have to be. However, despite many dissatisfaction we face in reality, we all have dreams that push us forward.
